Industrial furniture makers fifteenthirtyeight on starting their business by accident

After a fruitless search for a coffee table that didn’t hurt their eyes or make them use allen keys(!), couple Kitty Danger and Al Barras decided to take matters into their own hands, literally.

“We spent a Sunday in the workshop and created something that we thought was pretty cool,” says Kitty. “Once we finished we uploaded it onto Instagram and we were inundated with requests for orders. Et voila fifteenthirtyeight was immaculately conceived.”

Creating industrial furniture and home decor, they predominantly use steel (their name actually reflects the melting point of iron — 1538 degrees) for its industrial aesthetic and strength. Also dabbling in brass, copper, glass, marble, timber and concrete, they try to keep all their materials within that minimal and industrial feel, not forgetting that little bit of luxe!

[contextly_sidebar id=”KxdwwXBvJjMmC4i7MeMfbMSWM90rxxT1″]With their range expanding almost weekly, they currently have coffee tables, side consoles, stools and plant hangers in production, all made by hand in their Brisbane studio. Only doing small runs of each design, they also spend a lot of time on bespoke pieces for commissions. “Having the ability to produce pieces from start to finish in-house means that we can work closely with our fab private and commercial clients to make some pretty awesome one-off pieces,” explains Kitty. “This also allows us the time to work on some exciting new designs and some bigger pieces… hello beds and couches!”

xKEh5wbU_m4JE7MWeNEZ6EFRznyegVBnWTdld6y3nz0

Prior to launching fifteenthirtyeight late last year, Kitty spent her time working in construction and PR (what can’t this woman do?!) and Al worked as a qualified mechanic in the film and TV industry. Now, having both jumped head first into furniture design, Kitty is happy to say her building experience still comes in useful. “Al is a welding wizard and can fabricate literally anything, but luckily I still know my way around power tools, which comes in handy in the studio!”

WeEQUGAKajwJqzc1vHclO4pV-Jl8Y3BVoOXu48AiBaI

Inspired by sculptural art and mid-century lines, the duo put great emphasis on creating beautiful angles, lines and shadows. “When we’re designing we start with a sketch and a rough idea of what we want to achieve. However, this usually changes when we make the prototype and see the angles come to life, so sometimes the finished product is amazingly different to the idea we started with. In terms of production, we cut each piece and weld or braze the base together. Then it’s polished or powder coated and fitted with glass, marble, timber or concrete, packaged up and shipped to its new home.”

Dulux’s new paintable wallpaper is removable too

Wallpaper is an easy way to inject interest into your space. Dulux’s new Design Wallpaper Paintables range gives you the power to add textured dimension to your walls in your preferred colour scheme. It’s wallpaper meets paint! AND it’s removable.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80595_shortened

Comeing in three textures – linen, concrete and pinstripe – this new product offers completely new possibilities for design from bold and striking walls, or used sparingly to create subtle visual interest.

Dulux Colour Trend Forecaster, Andrea Lucena-Orr, says combined with paint, this innovative design solution is simple and cost-effective. “The range not only beautifies walls but easily covers small imperfections, with no stripping, filling or sanding required for slightly damaged walls,” she says.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80550

Gone are the days where the application and removal of wallpaper is an arduous task. Using the latest technology, Dulux Design Wallpaper Paintables can be easily applied and maneuvered for precise application; as well as effortlessly removed by peeling off where the glue does not damage or remain on the existing wall substrate.

“The range is incredibly easy to work with in regards to fixing on the wall and painting because the paper is so much thicker than standard thin wallpaper,” Lucena-Orr says.

There are many ways that wallpaper can be used to complement existing room features by adding an accent above a fireplace, hallways and inner wardrobe walls. “Paintable wallpaper adds texture to your walls that paint alone can’t achieve. Textured wallpaper takes your paint to the next level, allowing you to create a luxurious bespoke look,” Andrea adds.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80497_3

“It offers homeowners, and even renters, the opportunity to have more control over the design of their living space where you just peel the wallpaper off the wall when it is time to redecorate or move.”

Dulux’s range of paintable wallpaper allows you to transform and hide slightly damaged walls, turning them into the ‘wow’ factor of your home without having to add more costly items such as tiles, stone or textile fabrics.

Available exclusively at Bunnings stores with an RRP of $34.95 per roll. Roll size 10.5m x 0.52m. For more information and project inspiration.

The year that was for Design Twins & their concrete homewares

We love supporting small businesses in the interiors and homewares industry and last year, one couple (in love and business) stood out. They were Crystal Bailey and Mitchel Lindsay from Design Twins and we are a bit smug with ourselves for having been the first blog to feature their gorgeous concrete wares!

Crystal and Mitch of Design Twins
Crystal and Mitch of Design Twins

The business was in fact, only launched six months ago in June. “The adventure has become a dream come true,” Crystal says. “We spent the start of the year working on original designs that no one had ever seen before and decided to make them all out of an industrial obsession with concrete! It turned out to be so much fun that we would start selling them at the markets. We started to gain a fair amount of interest on social media when we started participating in Interiors Addict’s 7 Vignettes challenge (thank you for being the reason I woke up so early, half asleep in my PJs to take a styled shot!), so setting up a website seemed like a natural thing to do. Once our website was live, our orders were so huge, that we had to move out of our tiny little apartment and into a home with a workshop. It was bittersweet, because we still miss that cute little place on the beach!”

A few weeks later, the couple started receiving a large amount of interest from stockists around the country and decided to move Design Twins into a warehouse, where they juggled business with other jobs and family and then Crystal found out she was six weeks pregnant on her 30th birthday!

(I told you they had a big year!)

“The following month, we moved home and our warehouse again, but it all finally works perfectly and we are working on a brand new collection,” says Crystal. “It’s definitely the hardest we have ever worked, but everything has been so worth it. We have had our products featured in our favourite magazines such as Real Living, Marie Claire and Inside Out and currently have our products stocked in the most beautiful homewares stores such as Fenton & Fenton, Ahoy Trader and The Minimalist. We were also invited to teach sold out concrete classes at The School by Megan Morton.”

In October, Design Twins exhibited at Grand Designs Live and they had a sale event on Temple & Webster.

“All of this, with huge amounts of online orders, and it’s been one crazy, fun, exhausting but rewarding year for us! Everything happened so naturally that we actually can’t explain how it all happened, but we have always remained inspired by others, constantly designing and true to ourselves.”

Crystal credits stylist Megan Morton for the initial inspiration to launch the business, after attending one of her workshops, which she described as life-changing.

Caesarstone launches Sleek Concrete design

It’s been a good month for exciting new products from Caesarstone. Last week, we shared the new Calacatta marble-inspired quartz surface, and today we bring you Sleek Concrete.

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 1.24.06 pm

With a warm grey base, it encapsulates the look and feel of fine concrete, but has the durability and ease of maintenance that Caesarstone surfaces are renowned for. There’s also a more on trend concrete matt textured finish, which creates an industrial, aged look and feel. It never requires sealing and will acquire a natural patina over time.

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 1.20.38 pm

Perfect for both residential and commercial use, Sleek Concrete can be used for kitchen benchtops, splashbacks, wall panels, vanities, café tables and benches and bars. Sleek Concrete is available now and comes with 10-year limited warranty. Find your nearest showroom here.

The Design Twins’ love affair with concrete

When Crystal Bailey and Mitchel Lindsay met last year, they had an immediate connection. They finished each other’s sentences and would spend hours on the phone talking late into the night. In all respects they felt like twins, even nicknaming one another ‘Twinnie’. So when the time came, after months of discussion, to launch their own business, the name came naturally: Design Twins.

HIGH RES - SLATE GRAFF

A unique handmade homewares brand, The Design Twins’ main obsession is concrete, making everything from pots, cups, pillows and hands out of the material.

“What I love about concrete is the fact that something so strong and simple can be moulded into structured, organic forms,” says Crystal. “It allows the mind to get creative and use it to create anything. I created a concrete birthday cake for Mitch’s birthday a few weeks ago!”

HIGH RES- gold nugget

Yet the idea to make homewares out of concrete didn’t come overnight, rather Crystal has stylist extraordinaire Megan Morton to thank for the inspiration. “In February this year, I attended her masterclass. It was life-changing! Literally. I left inspired and hungrier than ever to want to start something different. Something that came naturally to me, yet something different to what was out there in the world of homewares.”

HIGH RES- COFFEE CANDLE

So armed with a visual diary, Crystal spent several weeks sketching and before long, the beginnings of the Design Twins range had formed. The next step saw the duo rock up to their local Bunning’s in a Mini and pick up a bag of concrete (they admit there were some strange looks!) and then, with their kitchen as their studio, they began making.

“We originally made a concrete pot by mixing up a bag of concrete and pouring it into a container,” explains Crystal. “Then we used a smaller container filled with rocks to make the hole in the centre. This simple idea then led to so many crazy ideas, which is how we made our lava pots, cups, pillows, coffee cup candles and skulls.”

HIGH RES - RAW GRAFFITIS

A favourite of mine (and of theirs) is the concrete pillow, which while not ideal for resting your head on, is perfect for your phone or keys! “I love the look on people’s faces when they pick them up for the first time, expecting a light pillow and realise it’s actually concrete,” says Mitch. “The texture, weight and individuality that come from concrete itself, just makes every piece so unique.”

HIGH RES- pillow tealight

The pillow, alongside all their other homwares, is extremely unique, so it may come as a surprise that Design Twins is their first foray into traditional design; with Crystal previously a musician signed to Song Music and EMI Records and Mitch the owner of a gourmet grocer. But for Mitch, he doesn’t believe the lack of formal training has held them back: “I wouldn’t say we have the typical design background of some but we definitely have our own style of controlled madness to our creation processes and that’s what we love.”

Concrete clocks, concrete lights, concrete purses. Oh my!

So, while I was well aware that concrete was having a bit of a moment, what I was completely unaware of was that concrete could be so versatile that products such as concrete clocks and concrete purses could actually exist!

slab 2

But for Sean Young and Andrew Biffin of the ‘Everything Cool in Concrete’ online store, S L A B homewares, producing and selling such products is all in a day’s work.

“To take a raw material like concrete, that is integral to our day to day lives and to see it transformed into high fashion or sculptural art and homewares is a true passion of ours,” says Sean. “Most would think that concrete is cold and void of any warmth, but our collection presents concrete in a brand new light. Warm, organic designs injecting individuality into homes, offices and wardrobes.”

Starting the label in 2011 due to their love of industrial chic and urban design, the store sells furniture, lighting, homewares and fashion. Designed by talented artists from around the globe, all are original designs made from concrete, aiming to not just be beautiful but useful too.

slab

One such range that stands out for this reason is the Concrete Clutch range (photo bottom right), which while more fashion that interiors, is worth a mention for both its originality and beauty. “Our Concrete Clutch range is definitely the most unique in both design and innovation,” explains Sean. “The fusion of elegant Italian leather with raw formed concrete has created a style that is both refined and edgy.”

But if Sean had to name his favourite piece in the interiors line, it’s the Concrete Clocks that he has a soft spot for. “It is difficult to select one individual piece, but I simply cannot get past the SLAB#3 Grandfather Clock (photo bottom left). Standing tall like a dominant figure in a room, it is like a sculptural masterpiece, adding a new twist to a historical classic.”

Freedom Kitchens: bringing the latest trends from Milan to Australia within weeks

Last week saw THE event of the interiors calendar Salone Internazionale del Mobile (the international furniture fair) in Milan, and I was lucky enough to go for the first time. Within this mega fair sits Eurocucina, a kitchens-only showcase bigger than most Aussie trade fairs and full of beautiful things (read about the top trends I spotted here).

DSC_0093-processed
A display at Eurocucina in Milan

Freedom Kitchens sent a team of 10 of their designers to Milan to be inspired by Europe’s latest trends, innovations and materials in kitchens. Because they have their own Australian factory, this inspiration can become reality in customers’ kitchen within months — weeks even. This flexibility and freedom to move fast is what keeps their kitchens cutting edge and fashionable, as you may have seen on The Block Sky High.

Kim & Matt
Matt and Kim’s Freedom Kitchen from The Block Sky High

At the fair, Freedom Kitchens’ national sales director Susan Hasler said the kitchens at Milan were darker and moodier than last year with a lot of highlights in timber veneers and more matt than gloss finishes. “Some of the Dekton surfaces were very interesting and there was a lot of the concrete look and feel. It’s all a lot about texture. Touch and feel is really important.”

Cabinetry was perhaps more vertical than horizontal with taller pull-out drawers containing several internal drawers. Another trend she noticed was for integrated handles rather than a completely handle-less look.

Large drawer storage seen at Eurocucina
Large drawer storage seen at Eurocucina

Freedom Kitchens will be able to translate these innovations and trends to the local Australian market very quickly, while remembering that not everything will be popular or appropriate to our lifestyle. “We will be able to update some of our designs within a couple of months due to us manufacturing in Australia. We can do smaller runs, move quickly and see if things work and are popular,” Susan says. “It’s really important for us to come here to things like Eurocucina. Australia is sometimes thought of as being behind the times. You’re going to have a kitchen for a very long time so it’s important we’re ahead of the game. You don’t want to invest in something which is already a couple of years out of date. We have 10 kitchen designers here which is a big investment but it’s worth it for what we can bring back and the level of credibility it gives us. It’s about us bringing that fashion look at a value price.”

It’s not as simple as copying a load of ideas and expecting Australians to accept them as the latest and greatest, by any means. “It’s about adapting ideas to the Australian market and our way of life,” Susan says. “In terms of the differences between Europe and Australia, we entertain outside a lot, with kitchens often leading out onto decks or yards, or other entertaining areas. This lends itself well to the single wall and island design of kitchen.”

Kitchens were moodier, with more timber veneers and matt surfaces at Eurocucina
Kitchens were moodier, with more timber veneers and matt surfaces at Eurocucina

While people are often tempted to play it safe on a room which costs a lot of money and they hope to keep for years, Susan says a good kitchen designer can help them to be braver without wasting money or making an unwise investment. Her advice for a ‘safe’ yet fashionable kitchen is to stick to neutral cabinets and be bold with things you can change every couple of years (if desired) like wall colours (wallpaper even!), pendant lights and even splashbacks. You can make a real difference with how you accessorise (the great thing about Freedom Kitchens being that you can pick up Freedom homewares in store too). “We love being able to show customers how to accessorise and style their kitchens with our examples in our showrooms,” Susan says.

In terms of the strong presence of timber veneer at Milan, Susan doesn’t think many Australians will opt for that look in a big way. They may, for example though, choose to do their base cabinets in timber veneer and top cabinets in white, or just their end panels for example. These are all flexible options Freedom Kitchens can offer. “We also have to bear in mind that something that looks great here in Europe may not translate well in Australian light. It’s very different.”

Timber veneers seen at Eurocucina in Milan
Timber veneers seen at Eurocucina in Milan

The previous snobbery about veneer is disappearing these days, due to the huge advances in quality. “The new ones are so good you can’t even tell they’re not solid timber. They’re also more durable and hygienic which makes them a smart choice for kitchens.”

Look out for more expert tips on kitchen storage and how to get the most out of working with a kitchen designer on the blog next week.

My trip to Milan was hosted by Freedom Kitchens with support from Caesarstone Australia.

Caesarstone think outside (or inside) the bench top in Milan

Last night, I went to a beautiful Caesarstone event in Milan as part of the international furniture fair Salone del Mobile. The crowning glory of the installation was a 19-metre long, super sleek and modern ‘island’ for cooking and food prep, looking striking in the middle of one of the historic Palazzo Clerici’s ornate old rooms, with a lemon tree springing from its centre.

palazzo_clerici_2_8011

Two further islands, also made of various Caesarstone surfaces, comprised a table tennis table and a stunning bath with built-in record turntable!

palazzo_clerici_2_7987

Palazzo_Clerici_7867

Islands is a collaboration with London-based Raw Edges designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay. In their eight years, the young duo have designed for Cappellini, Established & Sons, Moroso, Kvadrat, Stella McCartney, Arco, Mutina, Lema and more, and their many works have been showcased in museums and exhibited in expos in Milan, London, Paris and New York.

The main idea was to look at the Caesarstone product differently; beyond simply a surface that you put things on top of. The main island had cut-outs for sinks, dishes, chopping boards and much more, showing just what’s possible. The only limit is your imagination!

Palazzo_Clerici_7959

Palazzo_Clerici_7879

Caesarstone Australia marketing manager Andrew Dixon explains the idea is to really inspire people to think outside the box, and while it’s unlikely many customers will go as far as putting a turntable in their bathroom, the many possibilities available to customise the flexible and super strong product are not fantasy.

“We’d like people to think ‘do I really need all these cupboards?’ for example. Caesarstone is so user-friendly and so much more than just a bench top. I personally love the idea of creating a raised appliances station on top of the bench top where you keep appliances out, but out of the way of the main preparation surface,” Andrew says.

“Innovation is really important to us and we like to provide the customer with direct inspiration.”

Two exciting new products should hit the market around June/July: Sleek Concrete and the marble-inspired Calacatta Nuvo (I’ve seen it and it’s great).
