Darren Palmer gives new apartment complex his designer touch

The Block Glasshouse isn’t the only apartment complex interior designer Darren Palmer has been spending time at recently! This Saturday, he will head up the launch of a signature development in the heart of Moonee Ponds.

20140909_MooneePonds_MaxDoyle_31

A first for Darren and his design studio, MoPo is a 126-apartment development with luxury indoor and outdoor retreats he has conceived and designed. As the project’s ambassador and designer, he will be speaking with prospective buyers and attendees, discussing his vision for the development and showcasing bespoke furnishings and designs that will feature throughout.

20140909_MooneePonds_MaxDoyle_505 (16.09.14)

I don’t know about you but I am loving that colour palette!

The public are invited to go along and meet Darren and receive a signed, free copy of his interior style guide Moments of Potential.

When: This Saturday 18 October 2014, 12 noon to 2pm

Where: On-site display apartment, 333 Ascot Vale Road, Moonee Ponds, VIC.

Accord Property Group have brought together internationally recognised architectural firm Peddle Thorp and Darren in a residential development they say sets a new benchmark for living in Melbourne’s inner north. Luxury inclusions and communal spaces have been set as the norm across every aspect of MoPo’s 11 levels of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. The development also features a striking, hotel-like lobby, rooftop terrace and enclosed sky lounge.

Development manager Anthony Ongarello says: “Darren’s involvement has generated significant momentum for this project. As a developer, we welcome the challenge to bring a diverse and considered offering to the market. We’ve stepped it up by engaging a world class architectural firm in Peddle Thorp. The floor plans have been created to appeal to an owner-occupier. It’s a building that people want to live in and Peddle Thorp have gone over and above to deliver exactly that.”

As part of Moonee Valley Council’s requirements, respected street artist STABS has been commissioned to create a mural to activate the front façade of the building.

One-bedrooms from $335,000, two-bedrooms from $570,000 and three bedrooms from $675,000. For more information.

Video: Darren Palmer talks kitchens with real homeowner Meagan

Sponsored by Freedom Kitchens

We all love a good Block room reveal but you can’t beat a snoop around a real life, everyday person’s kitchen! The first in a new series of videos from Freedom Kitchens, our friend Darren Palmer, interior designer and The Block judge, talks about the features people have chosen for their own dream kitchens. They’re kicking off with a gorgeous monochrome number, which combines style (hello, beautiful integrated marble dining table!) with function (very hidden butler’s pantry!).

Copyright Eliot Cohen - Zeitgeist Photographyemail: eliot@zeitgeist.com.au

Meagan’s kitchen definitely impresses Darren who loves the mirror splashback and glossy black cabinetry reflecting the garden and bringing the outside in. Meagan said she wanted a kitchen which worked for her family but she also wanted people to walk in and say “wow,”and I’m pretty confident she has achieved that.

TKG0102_video_banner_550x132[3]

Meagan came up with the concept herself and took her sketches and ideas to Freedom Kitchens, where they helped her make it a reality. You’d never know this large pantry was even there, as it is hidden behind what looks like two regular cupboard doors! And this is how her kitchen looks so spotless, being that everything you need to actually have out and use is in here! Smart!

Copyright Eliot Cohen - Zeitgeist Photographyemail: eliot@zeitgeist.com.au

The cabinetry is completely handle-less and Meagan has chosen almost all drawers instead of hard-to-reach-to-the-back-of cupboards.

Watch Darren’s chat with Meagan in the video.

The high drama Block Glasshouse terrace reveals

OMG, I  don’t know about you but I got seriously high blood pressure watching last night’s terrace reveals. Agh! So much work to do, Keith handing out extra work and stopping plans in their tracks at every turn and serious amounts of tantrums, tears and rain. Nightmare! Apart from Max and Karstan of course, who seemed pretty chilled about everything! So it’s really quite staggering that the end results were, in the main, so slick and impressive. I’m amazed that four out of five couples finished, let alone anything else!

Carlene & Michael: 2nd place

H1 Rm9 C&M Terrace EA 27

“How good is this?” and “Incredible,” were Shaynna’s words, followed by a “wow” from Darren. The judges all loved the timber cladding. Neale said the exposed brick in the indoor living area which he initially had misgivings about now made total sense in the context of the outdoor area. Darren said it felt like an urban oasis and Shaynna was amazed they’d achieved so much in just seven days, thinking of everything. Despite being close to the street, Neale said it had a feeling of seclusion which was perfect. It was going so very well until they “forgot” to put Max & Karstan’s ugly pipe lamp in their room for judging, as per the rules, losing them a point. When it came to the small upstairs terrace, Neale was in love again, calling it a real gem. The outdoor shower and vertical garden also went down well. “Michael and Carlene have a phenomenal apartment, ” said Shaynna, with Darren adding: “They’re sitting on a goldmine.” And just to finish it off, Neale declared they’d nailed it.

Chris & Jenna: last place

H2 Rm9 C&J Terrace EA 17

With their not one but two terraces, Chris & Jenna were falling seriously behind. Even Keith took pity on them and chose to muck in and help. Bless, what a secret softie! Not that it went down well with some of the other contestants… Nothing could stop the overwhelming reality of the sheer amount of work though, resulting in tears and domestics. With two unfinished rooms in a row you couldn’t help but feel sorry for them and nobody wants to see a man cry (poor Chris!).

While they were probably expecting the worst, Neale was very complimentary about the ivy wall and what they’d managed to achieve, creatively, on a budget. Shaynna commended them for picking themselves up each week and really trying but couldn’t ignore what hadn’t been finished but “damn well good on them!”). Neale said despite it not being finished you could see it was going to be really strong. The generous comments ended when the judges got upstairs to the rooftop however! The huge TV got plenty of criticism for being ugly and impractical. “Downstairs I could forgive them a lot but up here really doesn’t work,” summed up Neale.

Get Chris & Jenna’s look: Sky blue outdoor scatter cushion, tangerine outdoor pillow cushion, steel hexagon with hanging bromeliad plant, Fluid Hoshi Design in limestone, Oracular Design Planter in limestone, Geometric Divine Design Planter in limestone,  Geometric Divine Design Tealight in limestone.

Max & Karstan: 3rd place

The Block in Melbourne

All the judges agreed the couple’s room was warm, cohesive and tied in well with the apartment. Darren loved the remote control blinds and the hanging plants. Neale said the vertical garden was one of the best examples he’d seen yet and that the terrace had made a massive difference in finishing off the apartment, which in previous weeks had been criticised for being too cold and clinical. These two did lose a point though for not incorporating Dee and Darren’s hideous trumpet lights!

Get Max & Karstan’s look: Vertiscape green wall modules, Pop & Scott pots, Pop plant hanging string garden kit, Outdeco Gardenscreen Marakesh black.

Shannon & Simon: 4th place

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 19

The boys seemed to have one hurdle after another to overcome this week but, in their usual style, remained good humoured! But the judges couldn’t agree on the space. While Darren and Neale loved the hanging and other pots, Shaynna hated them and said they didn’t fit with the rest of the apartment. Neale said it just fell short of being absolutely brilliant while Shaynna said it was borderline boring. Owch! Neale’s hipster’s terrace was Shaynna’s abandoned warehouse! The boys also lost a point for not incorporating Michael and Carlene’s lamp.

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 33

Get Shannon & Simon’s look: Radial wall mural, wire powdercoated chairs, wire bar stools, steel macrame net.

Dee & Darren: WINNERS!

H5 Rm9 D&D Terrace EA 5

You’ve got to agree, the double Ds’ idea to create a mezzanine with city views was GENIUS. Neale and Shaynna agreed it was like a little Tuscan retreat. Neale said every now and again, more is more! As usual, the styling got big compliments. Neale said he couldn’t remember the last time he saw an apartment which was totally holistic in the way it came together. Darren got so excited when he spotted the mezzanine and ran up to check out the city views, saying you could happily sit their quietly, completely removed from the hustle and bustle of life. Shaynna said it was the sort of wow factor that would create a bidding war. Again, they lost a point though for not incorporating Chris and Jenna’s disco vertical garden. What a surprise!

The Block in Melbourne

Get Dee & Darren’s look: medium lantern, mini lantern, rustic pine reclaimed coffee table, Maine botanical cushion, 3-piece outdoor setting,  adjustable wall spotlight in copper,

After the terrace judging, in true Block style, came the big surprise that the next two weeks would be spent doing the sixth apartment between them all, with those creating winning rooms getting to take cash off their reserve prices. Will be interesting seeing all the couples working together to achieve one cohesive home. Eek!  Can’t wait for next week!

The Block Glasshouse living and dining rooms

After last week’s kitchen reveals, fantastic as they were, I was ready for some soft furnishings this week, so living/dining reveals were just the thing! In my mind, the winners were Max and Karstan and Darren and Dee, but the judges didn’t agree, with Michael and Carlene taking out the top spot. It was a disappointing week for the boys, whose dwindling budget saw them produce a room the judges found didn’t match up to the rest of their apartment. And for Chris and Jenna, who came fifth, they were more than a little “over it” thanks to the many criticisms of the judges, who they said were being rude, rather than judging. Eek!

MAX AND KARSTAN

H3 Rm7 M&K Living Dining EA 2

Max and Karstan’s reveal started well with a (very macho!) squeal of delight from Darren! They all loved the natural light afforded by the windows and the striking pendant above the dining table (how gorgeous?!). Neale said he absolutely loved the sophisticated palette and look of restrained glamour. Shaynna said the softness of the room capitalised on the natural light. Darren loved the recessed carpet (genius!) and said it was elegant and a break from the concrete floor. Neale went on to say the look was upmarket and he couldn’t find anything he didn’t like! The custom concrete table also went down very well with all the judges.

H3 Rm7 M&K Living Dining EA 1

Get Max and Karstan’s look: Alexia dining chair, Juno Scandi 3-seater and 2-seater sofas, Palma round coffee table, Palma side table, Gus GT rocking chair, Cintemani pendant, Edge 1 light single drop pendant, Just The Two of Us by Thierry B artwork.

SIMON AND SHANNON

H4 Rm7 S&S Living Dining EA 10

This one didn’t get off to a good start with “the weird corner under the stairs” not going down well with Darren. Neale was immediately underwhelmed, saying some parts were extremely high end, like the floor, but others were low budget and he didn’t like the art. Darren did however. “It jars with the rest of the apartment,” said Neale. And Darren and Shaynna criticised the too-small rug in the living area. And as for the pullout clothes line? I’m not sure anyone knows why they thought that was a good idea!

H4 Rm7 S&S Living Dining MP 7453M-processed

Get Simon and Shannon’s look: Masai artwork, Sean Dix Forte round glass coffee table, Sean Dix Forte glass dining table, Block 2-print set, Nice View print, replica Eames DSW chair, Florida lamp, Jacob oak floor lamp, Audrey table lamp, Shelley Panton salad bowl.

CHRIS AND JENNA

The Block in Melbourne

Well, it’s probably no surprise Chris and Jenna felt so hard done by this week with all the criticism over this room, but I do think they could have been a little less whingey about it. Easy for me to say though, eh?! All the judges said they didn’t like seeing the study nook as soon as they walked in. Darren was really upset about the badly finished paintwork and the mess, right down to the dusty desk which hadn’t been wiped before styling items on it. Shaynna took exception to the “random” low shelf and suggested they remove it. All that before they even got to the living/dining area proper! The timber dining table was a hit (phew!) with Darren calling it amazing and Shaynna calling it divine. Shaynna thought the pendant above it though, although nice, was too small and felt miserly. The judges liked the lamp, couch and chair but felt they didn’t work well together. Neale said the room lacked soul and Shaynna said it had no mood at all. Ouch! Neale said nothing about the room made him want to stay there. Oh, and the dining chairs wouldn’t fit under the table…

DEE AND DARREN

The Block in Melbourne

I was a big fan of this room. I mean, it has a massive Bromley and French oak herringbone floors?! Gorgeous! Shaynna remarked on the beautiful styling and Neale said the parquetry floor was an absolute winner. The compliments stopped there from Neale though, who said he had been expecting something more and that everything was fighting with the Bromley art. His least favourite thing though was the over-styled under stairs space. I have to agree it looked a bit wrong, but overall, I loved this look. Darren said the space was beautiful and exceptionally well considered.

MICHAEL AND  CARLENE: WINNERS!

The Block in Melbourne

It was a case of last but not least for winners Michael and Carlene and their impressive bookcase! It started well with the computer-controlled lights and just kept getting better. The judges all cooed over the chair with the small table (which they realised could be move and added onto the end of the dining table when required for extra seating — clever!) and Neale said they had a great eye. Onto the impressive cabinetry and Neale said it was the first time he had seen a bookcase styled properly on the show. Darren was impressed by the way they’d styled op shop finds by colour coding and paying attention to size and scale. Neale said they’d created a very homely environment but he feared the exposed brick wall would be polarising. Shaynna disagreed saying it would appeal to many buyers. She wasn’t a fan of the too-blingy pendant light though and said it should go. Agreed!

Kathryn’s look inside the finished Block Glasshouse

Last week, we sent our resident Blockhead Kathryn Bamford to look around the finished Block apartments. She was a little bit excited…

So I went into The Block on Thursday night and when I say went to The Block I mean got a full blown tour of all the finished apartments. Dreams can come true, right? I guess this is what little kids feel like at Disneyland and can I tell you it was everything I expected and more. The Block is situated on bustling High Street, Prahran. The neighbouring houses are cute double-storey terraces and mid rise new apartment complexes, which is rather different when compared to the monstrosity of The Block. Yet for an old eighties office conversion that is huge, it’s surprisingly not too overpowering from the street front and I have to say they have done a grand job of converting it.

We were greeted with delicious canapés and champagne of course, and ushered upstairs. It was a lot bigger than I expected on the inside and there’s even a common area complete with a lift that all the homes open onto (which we haven’t been privy to on TV yet). The contestants were all lovely and I think a little relieved it was nearly all over. They were all getting along so surely not too much drama will unfold for the rest of this season? The lovely Shelley Craft talked us through the proceedings of the night and we were sworn to secrecy with no photos banned inside the apartments (if only I could share the mental pictures I took). We were divided into five groups of around 10 people and ushered around the apartments.

First up for my group was Max and Karstan’s apartment. Holy moly this place is huge. It feels massive! The kitchen looks great and even has a TV in it which is a great idea and very family friendly. There are four ovens and a huge butler’s pantry which overlooks a massive courtyard. We were even lucky enough to see inside ‘the secret room’ which is at the top of a tight spiral staircase off the courtyard. Then it was off across the common area to Darren and Dee’s. Ok, so I’m actually in love with Darren and Dee’s apartment. It’s smaller than the others but boy, do I love it! Those herringbone floors are killer and are almost throughout the whole place. The kitchen is noticeably smaller than the other apartments and has a small butler’s pantry but it is still nice nonetheless. After seeing Dee’s styling in the flesh, it’s just as good as on the screen. I’ve decided that she should be crowned the texture queen of The Block! The  master bedroom feels huge and has a balcony overlooking the courtyard which both have great city views. Their apartment is definitely the most consistent of the bunch so despite being the smallest, I wouldn’t rule them out of potentially taking it out.

Next up it was onto the boys’ apartment. Shannon and Simon have done a fabulous job and I can assure you the kitchen is not a disaster, it’s actually really nice. I love the dark benchtops and textured wood grain cupboards they went with. I love the fact that you can stand at your stove top cooking whilst looking out of the massive window onto bustling High Street. All I can say for now is that the boys’ master room robe is as good if not better than it looks on the big screen. It feels more like a luxurious parents’ retreat than a bedroom. Wait until you see their master en suite. IT IS OUT OF CONTROL! I walked in and actually had to take a moment to take it all in. It’s so different to what you would have ever seen before and it really works.

Our fourth stop was at Michael and Carlene’s apartment. The kitchen didn’t wow me but it was still really nice. Their living/dining area is large yet still feels really family friendly and homely. It opens onto a huge courtyard which is perfect for hosting large family events and overlooks High Street. I have a feeling that a family is going to want to buy their apartment. Last stop was Chris and Jenna’s house. I mean apartment. I’m hesitant to call Chris and Jenna’s an apartment as when you’re in there it feels like a house. It’s noticeably bigger than the others and has a gorgeous three-storey staircase going all the way up to the rooftop terrace. I loved Chris and Jenna’s main bathroom which received a perfect score and standing in it, you actually can’t fault it. Their kitchen is huge like the rest of their house and I love the fact the butler’s pantry is hidden behind normal kitchen doors so you can’t even tell it’s there. The copper sinks and black tapware look fantastic and all overlooking a huge courtyard. To be honest, I don’t know how they finished such a big apartment with the same budget everyone else had.

So I’m not even sure if I can share this but what the heck. The couples get to do a re-do room and I’m sure you will agree with which rooms they choose to re-do. The night ended with some Q&A with the contestants and producers and after that and I got to take home a signed copy of Darren Palmer’s new book Easy Luxury. It was a great night and a big thank you to The Good Guys Kitchens for inviting me along!

The Block Glasshouse: Staircase, laundry & powder room reveals

Well, it’s week five and I finally got to watch The Block room reveals for myself, since returning from our six-month trip last Monday. Gosh, I’ve missed my Block fix and I wasn’t disappointed. Michael and Carlene’s efforts, which won, definitely impressed me most. Let’s take a look at all the couples’ rooms and where you can shop their looks, whoever your favourites are.

Carlene and Michael

The Block in Melbourne

The judges spent plenty of time in their space, which eventually won, because there were so many details to look at. Neale said that the metallic details were very on trend but he likes how they’d no gone overboard and just used touches. Shaynna said it was very unusual (in a good way) and Neale called it really beautiful. They all agreed Michael and Carlene had set a really high benchmark and created off the shelf luxury. A great start to the episode!

Chris and Jenna

Darren and Shaynna are still undecided on whether creating the void was a good idea and Neale found the stairs looked a little too heavy. It got so much worse when they went into the laundry and powder room though. “Oh my God, what happened?” was Neale’s reaction. Oh dear. Darren said it wasn’t working and Neale added there were angles and hard lines everywhere and it just wasn’t working. Shaynna went as far as to say she couldn’t believe the choices they’d made. The “disco benches” in the laundry failed to impress either and were branded dated.

Max and Karstan

They were not off to a great start with their staircase, enclosed by a glass wall. Neale said it felt small and constrained, Shaynna said she didn’t mind it and Darren thought it lacked warmth. More significantly though, Darren pointed out that it was high maintenance (dark steps and glass wall will show every mark) and the lack of hand rail was actually dangerous. Darren loved the lights in the bathroom and called them amazing. Neale however, said he felt ambivalent and that the design was too generic and not exciting. Darren agreed the palette was a little dated. Shaynna said it felt clinical but it did tick all the boxes. Neale said buyers would be looking for something more.

WHERE TO BUY: Tubo 800 surface mount pendant, Vogue LED stair light.

Darren and Deanne

The Block in Melbourne

Poor Darren and Deanne and their unfinished staircase, bathroom and laundry! It was never going to be a winner or get a great reaction. Darren was at least kind enough to say the staircase design was simple and elegant. Neale said the bathroom and laundry were more like the Darren and Deanne they knew but he couldn’t ignore how unfinished they were and they had to judge on what they saw. Darren said it wasn’t what he expected to see from a couple who had so far been so strong and consistent. He said he loved the tapware, handle and colour palette choices.

The boys certainly did well this week. Shaynna and Neale both loved the staircase on first glance, with Darren adding that it had the same elements as Max and Karstan’s but because of its shape, was more interesting and appealing. Shaynna said the bathroom felt balanced. The judges loved it and said it was much more successful than their upstairs bathroom. Neale said it would appeal to the design savvy, urban, sophisticated buyer.

WHERE TO BUY: Saba pendant, Alrik pendants, Tree Rings artwork.

What did you think of the scores? There seems to be a lot of backlash from the public who think Darren and Deanne were scored too highly considering how unfinished their rooms were. What did YOU think?

Designers Interviews The Block

Interview: Darren Palmer on his new book, Easy Luxury

Darren Palmer’s first book is out on Monday. I got my hands on a preview copy of Easy Luxury and let me tell you, I am seriously impressed. I asked Darren about the story and inspiration behind the book and how on earth he managed to juggle writing it with being a judge on The Block, a dad and an interior designer! Keeping it real as ever, he reveals how he lost it when he got his hands on the first copy, how some of his best ideas came to him in the shower and how his hectic diary looks a little like a game of Tetris…

Easy_Lux_Cover

The title seems a good place to start. Does luxury have to mean expensive? “No way! It has nothing to do with spending a lot of money. Luxury to me is about having something that fits me perfectly — something that suits me better than anything else would because it’s been created in response to my particular needs and desires,” he says. “The other luxuries for me are choice and time. Time with family, time to unwind and time to see new and inspiring things. Money does buy you more choices but you need to understand how to filter those choices so that the things you choose work for you.”

Jennifer Hawkins' home, from Easy Luxury
Jennifer Hawkins’ home, from Easy Luxury

Darren has spent the last couple of years contributing to magazines like GQ and Grand Designs Australia and words have always come quite easily to him. “I started to feel like I had a good tone and something of worth to say. As my experience has grown, so too has my desire to share some of my knowledge. I started checking with publishers early last year and was grateful to have Murdoch pick up the book.”

I believe he has achieved his desire to write a comprehensive book that demystifies the design process, explaining things in easy terms that everyone can understand, while also sharing some advanced ideas and concepts. “I don’t use jargon or over-complicate things and there is no single correct answer given to design and decoration challenges in the book. I wanted to deliver foundations and fundamentals to anyone who would like to understand why good design is good, so they can create beautiful and functional spaces for themselves, to suit their own lives and families.”

p197_131127 - DARREN PALMER - CASTLE COVE FEATURE-190

Understanding these principles can help everyone have the luxury of good design. “When you understand the principles behind great design, you can interpret how it can fit and assist you in the creation of your perfect home. Living in a beautiful space has an effect on your mental and physical wellbeing, and your sense of prosperity increases when you consider your own home as a prosperous space. It’s not based on how much you spend, it’s based on how considered and appropriate and consistent your result it. How well it suits you and what the finished result looks like is the focus and Easy Luxury gives as much straightforward information as I could contain in one book.”

131016 - DARREN PALMER - PADDINGTON AVENUE-024

Darren, who has big plans to renovate his own Sydney home if he ever gets the time, says the book came easily as he was simply talking from experience. “The words weren’t always there, and they don’t always come in the most convenient places. I had bursts of creativity in the shower, on the plane or sitting at home with my laptop on my lap with no other distractions. But I also found when I’d earmarked time to write I didn’t have much to say! It’s a funny thing but it was very enjoyable writing the book. I probably rewrote it four times in the process, changing the structure and organising things in response to conversations with Murdoch and the brilliant editorial team working with me. But proudly, every word in the book is my own and I loved almost every minute of producing it.”

When it came to getting his hands on the first hard copy from his manager, he was way too excited to play it cool: “I was beside myself. I was trying to keep a lid on it but pretty much had to leave and take it to my car and just let the excitement out. It’s an amazing feeling. I immediately called a few people who would get my excitement but not one of them answered! So I was sat in my car on my own looking like a kid in a candy store. Must’ve been quite some sight!”

p201_140313 - DARREN PALMER - COOGEE + COVER-090

Being as busy as he is calls for some serious organisation and Darren’s diary is colour-coded and separated into different calendars. “I tend to just organise and slot in time for everything like a Tetris game. The diary looks like a Rubik’s Cube from day to day with so many things layered on top of each other but it works and I’m really grateful to be working on what I love.”

So, after a couple of crazy years and impressive success, what’s next for Mr Palmer? “You called it years ago. I recall you mentioning in our first interview you thought I was the next big thing! (Well yes, and I was right! Jen). I don’t feel that’s the case but it is a really amazing place to be, to have a lot of the things that I’d always desired and been working really hard towards finally come to fruition. It’s funny though as the more I work and the more things I’m able to tick off the list, the more things get added to that list. It’s harder to stop and celebrate those victories as the next thing is underway and takes a lot of energy and focus but it’s a really brilliant place to be.

“There’s so many wonderful opportunities that are in front of me and I’m truly grateful for all of the things that have so far come to pass. It’s more important for me now to spend time with the people I love and prioritise the most important as well as beneficial things in my life. I’m learning I can’t do everything so I need to choose wisely and keep my feet on the ground. My family won’t ever let it be any other way though so I’m a very lucky man.”

I’ll be writing a proper review of Easy Luxury when I’ve had more of a chance to read it.

Bathrooms The Block

Get the look: The Block Glasshouse main bathroom reveals that wowed the judges

It was a pretty big call to have the main bathrooms done so early in the series and to be honest I was a little concerned after an unfinished room last week. But boy, the Blockheads didn’t disappoint! All their main bathrooms were stunning!

MC01

Let’s start with Michael and Carlene’s main bathroom. How amazing are those white glossy tiles in a herringbone pattern against the darker ones? Marble: need I say more? Neale was a fan of another beautiful tall door and said it had a real sense of theatre. Shaynna (and her all-important storage test) was impressed with the built-in drawers, however she thought the lights needed to come down. Shaynna was also concerned about the practicality of the shower with the steps being slippery (and I would have to agree). Neale said the bathroom says confidence and I have to agree; these two are ones to watch.

MC02

Get Michael and Carlene’s look: beaker pendant light, tube pendant light, rounded pendant light, stoneware cup, candle.

CJ01

As I write this, I am still trying to get my head around the fact it’s only week two of The Block and Chris and Jenna actually delivered this room. It’s out of control! I am in love! It is a fine example of bathroom perfection and they most definitely deserved the perfect score they received from the judges. I love the fact that it has direct access to the guest bedroom, the wet room style shower area and the light box. You can tell a lot of thought and planning went into this one.

Shaynna’s mouth dropped wide open, she said it felt enormous and I have to agree. She called it the perfect Melbourne outdoor shower as you’re inside but it feels like the outdoors. Darren said the cabinetry was perfect (you would want to it to be with Chris being a cabinet maker). Neale said it was truly world class and a million dollar bathroom.

CJ02

Get Chris & Jenna’s look: pendant light, hand wash.

MK01

Max and Karstan’s bathroom felt enormous, Neale liked that they kept the styling sophisticated. Shaynna was lost for words and when she found them she said it was mind blowing! I thought the double access to the linen cupboard was sheer genius and storage queen Shaynna loved it! The judges were concerned there was no under floor heating or matt tiles but all agreed it was a great bounce back from last week.

MK02

Get Max and Karstan’s look: pendant lights, storage basket, set of towels.

SS01

Last week’s winners Simon and Shannon’s vanity got a big wow from all three judges; they also loved the heated floor. However practical Shaynna found the power points awkward and the judges didn’t like that the cistern wasn’t concealed. Neale said it was a lovely contemporary bathroom but something didn’t feel quite right. I liked the boys bathroom and feel it has that contemporary hotel bathroom vibe but there just wasn’t anything I loved from it. What did you think, given they won last week?

SS02

Get Simon and Shannon’s look: copper baskets, side table, towels.

DD01

I loved Darren and Deanne’s vanity and mirror and that pendant hanging over the bath tub framed by that gorgeous window. Neale said it was a beautiful bathroom and it was a combo of the pendant, window and tiles on the floor. Darren said it was a combo of everything (you could tell he really loved this bathroom). Neale said it was an urban classic aesthetic that was new to The Block and I have to agree, I like that they are bringing a different look to the show.

DD02

Get Darren and Deanne’s look: pendant light, mirror, pixel towels, soap dish.

Main bathroom week is never easy, there is a lot of pressure as you need to set the scene for the remaining bathrooms you’ve got to do. There were some big scores this week! I’m so glad Chris & Jenna smashed it with a perfect score of 30 out of 30 as they deserved it! That bathroom looks like it’s from the pages of a magazine.

Did you agree with the judges? Whose bathroom was your favourite this week?

If there’s something you liked that’s not mentioned here, you can get more looks from all the couples’ rooms at The Block Shop.

Covet my coffee table: with The Block judge Darren Palmer

This week’s coffee table comes to you from the child and pet-friendly, yet ever so stylish home, of interior designer and Block judge Darren Palmer!

darren1

Every coffee table needs a tray, of course, and a bit of plant life (gum nuts from the Sydney Flower Market and roses from Thomas Dux). The books change often and the Belle magazine came courtesy of the recent Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards goodie bag.

The clam shell came from a store in Bali on holiday, the gorgeous gilt-edged agate coasters from Becker Minty and the brass turtle from Orson and Blake. The coral came from Contents International Design in Moore Park.

darren3

The coffee table itself came from Boyd Blue and was chosen because it’s low enough for his son to play lego on (much lego can also be found stored underneath!)

“You can also see two of our three dogs and our cat,” Darren says. Read more about his tips for a child and pet-friendly home and see photos of his home in our previous interview.

Designers Expert Tips Interviews The Block

Meet Block judges Neale and Darren this weekend

The Home, Food & Wine Festival starts today in Sydney and it’s your chance to meet two of The Block judges, Neale Whitaker and Darren Palmer. We asked Neale why you should go along and couldn’t help but ask him for some interiors tips too…

Belle's Neale Whitaker
Belle’s Neale Whitaker

Why should people attend the Home, Food & Wine Weekend?

Because it’s an unparalleled opportunity to get up close and personal with the editors and experts from Australia’s favourite magazines!

What events will you be involved in?

I’m hosting a session on behalf of Natuzzi Italia tomorrow (Saturday 24 May) at 3pm to talk room planning. Our special guest is my good mate and fellow The Block judge Darren Palmer. And on Sunday (25 May) at 11.30am I’ll be hosting a session on behalf of Smeg to discuss new trends and directions in kitchen design.

What are some of the latest kitchen trends?

Mixing natural materials like wood and steel or wood and marble with laminates, soft-close features and integrated technology, and tiled and decorative splashbacks. It’s an interesting mix of the raw and rustic with hi-tech!

What are some tricks for optimising the design of a kitchen?

No tricks. Just planning, planning and planning. Kitchens are a big investment and you need to be realistic about your own needs, with one eye on resale. Kitchens sell houses, as my friend (real estate guru) John McGrath always says. Priorities should be abundant storage, integrated appliances and if there is space, a work/study area is a real luxury in a kitchen.

What are some of your biggest tips when it comes to renovating or re-doing a room?

I’m going to quote Darren here as it’s his specialist area: “Get references, gather samples, shop with your phone and check all of your measurements twice!” There’s more, but you’ll have to come along on Saturday to find out! It makes a huge difference too whether you’re renovating for yourself or for resale.

The Home Food & Wine Show, today, tomorrow and Sunday, Westfield Bondi Junction. More details.

Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2014 dominated by the ladies

“Wow” was pretty much all I could say when I attended the fourth annual Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards last night. Held at Coco Republic’s Alexandria showroom and styled by the very talented Steve Cordony, the room was more beautiful than I could have imagined.

BelleIDA2014_011

Interiors Addict favourite Greg Natale, took out the top award of Interior Designer of the Year, beating out fellow finalists SJB Interiors, Sarah Davison Interior Design, Arent & Pyke and Pascale Gomes-McNabb. He also won the top award in 2010 .

Belle editor-in-chief and one of the awards judges, Neale Whitaker, said Greg’s work had continued to develop and flourish through the years: “This is an exciting second win for Greg Natale, and demonstrates the increasing breadth, quality and maturity of his work.”

We couldn’t agree more. Jen has been privy to much of Greg’s as yet unpublished work which will appear in his forthcoming first book. I’ve heard it’s pretty incredible stuff!

Greg receives two return flights to Maison et Objet in Paris, plus a package of prizes that includes Parisi bathroom products, a Smeg fridge, a Riedel decanter and generous vouchers from Cadrys and Coco Republic.

The night was also one for the ladies, with entries this year being dominated by some of Australia’s leading female interior designers. Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke of Arent & Pyke took out the residential category for The Avenue (Sydney); Miriam Fanning of Mim Design won the corporate category for the Little Group Office (Melbourne); and Pascale Gomes-McNabb won the hospitality category for the French bistro Yellow (Sydney).

The innovative work of Melbounre’s March Studio saw them take out the commercial category for the Sneakerboy store and in the awards’ first-ever tie, Sydney-based Alexander & Co also received the award for the hospitality category for the Watsons Bay Hotel. Each category winner receives Cadrys, Coco Republic and Parisi vouchers.

An interiors addict’s dream event, with Darren Palmer, Megan Morton and Baz Du Bois

I just had to tell you about this event, Design for Life, which any interiors addict will surely love, but which is also raising funds for a great charity, Mummy’s Wish, which offers practical support to Australian mums and their families when they’re diagnosed with cancer. As someone who lost my mum to cancer when I was three, this cause is obviously very close to my heart. And the event has some top names on board and is going to be amazing, so you’d better book your ticket for 31 May right now!

Meet Darren Palmer and Baz Du Bois at charity event in Sydney

Mummy’s Wish is based in Queensland and has helped thousands of families there. They have had many requests for help by Sydney hospitals for mums with all types of cancer, but have been unable to assist as they don’t have support people in NSW. Their work is really practical. They help with housework, financial assistance, memory making for terminal mums, nutritious family meal provision, childcare, tutoring for little ones struggling to maintain focus on their studies due to their mum’s illness and free hire of iPads during hospital stays for Skype sessions between mums and their families.

How amazing and important is all that?

Help raise money to provide these services in Sydney by attending the ultimate interiors-loving girls day out, Design for Life, at The School in Rosebery on 31 May. Hear The Block’s Darren Palmer talk about how he got into interior design and some of the trends that are coming, and Barry Du Bois from The Living Room will to help you understand the five steps to planning a great room and show some examples. Stylist Megan Morton will be doing a styling session and Good Day Girl will show you how to dress confidently. You’ll also enjoy champagne and nibbles, all for $125 per ticket.

2-5pm on Saturday 31 May 2014. Places are limited. Buy tickets.

Scott Cam picks up Gold Logie for The Block Sky High + dress photos!

It was a night of glamour for the Block Sky High contestants and judges last night, but the biggest winner of the night was the show’s host, Scott Cam, who went home with the best presenter gong and the coveted Gold Logie.

Those following the frocks (that’d be me) would have noticed Shaynna Blaze and twins Alisa and Lysandra’s dresses, not to mention judges Neale Whitaker and Darren Palmer looking very sharp. My favourite Blockhead outfit was definitely Shelley Craft’s. I thought she looked lovely.

Thoughts on turning three and a $2,000 birthday giveaway

This blog turned three last week. I can’t believe it! For fun, I thought I’d take you back to the Interiors Addict that was, back in 2011, on Tumblr. This was when I didn’t even call it a blog! My first ever post was about displaying single stems of flowers and this shot was taken three apartments ago. Ah, the memories…

I like to think I had good taste from the start however and could spot a rising star. Here’s one of my first interviews with Darren Palmer, way before he became the big TV star (and I’m glad to say friend of mine) he is today.

After more than a decade of working as a journalist, mostly in print (and initially resistant to going online, can you believe it?!), I remain fascinated, excited and obsessed with the immediacy and potential of online publishing.

Here are  few of my blogging highlights this year:

So, three years on, Interiors Addict is on its third new look, it has more readers than ever (around 80,000 each month), continues to grow month on month and I’m making more money than I ever have, doing something I ADORE. Although I’m delighted, I’m still very much on the journey and not ready to rest on my laurels any time soon! The next year, like the last one, will be all about growth and improvement.

Although I’ve of course just listed all the good bits, it’s definitely not all glamour and I mainly share the edited highlights on Facebook and Instagram! You won’t see many pics of me with no makeup and working in my PJs at home, but that happens a lot! I have the same stresses at tax and BAS time as the next person, I’m rubbish with numbers, I sometimes worry WAY TOO MUCH about work stuff, I also worry too much about what other people think (but I’m getting better at it), and I really should switch off from social media a little more often.

If I’ve learned anything about creating a successful blog and business, it is realising just that, that it is a business. It requires a level of professionalism and setting yourself high standards, being organised, doing things properly, thinking like a business owner, constantly diversifying, improving and looking to grow and be sustainable. While yes it’s all very well going to fancy parties, getting goody bags and PR and being featured in magazines and the like, this is not what pays the bills and gets you a following big enough to be able to charge money for ads and sponsored content that enables you to make a living.

I’d love to do this for free but frankly, I can’t! And the fact that it’s a business makes me strive to keep improving all the time. And I always make sure I think about you, the readers (customers, if you will), and what you want to read about. I still get that buzz when I discover something I know you’re going to LOVE or I finish a great interview which I know will inspire and motivate some of you to follow your dreams and get into the design industry.

My ultimate business advice is, and always has been, work hard and be nice! Simple!

I am full of gratitude and thanks and still full of passion for this blog, and its readers, and making it even better, even more than ever. I won’t single people out for thanks because I like to think I appreciate them all year round and I don’t want to miss anyone! You know you are!

So please follow your dreams. I certainly never EVER thought I’d end up doing this for a living!

To celebrate turning three, I’m giving one of you the chance to win a massive $2,000 online homewares shopping spree! Find out all the details on the blog tomorrow!
