Mark Tuckey + Cotton On Home take plush turn for autumn/winter

A combination of winter-weight fabrics and a sophisticated colour palette, Mark Tuckey’s latest Cotton On Home collection has a real luxe factor – it’s also less beachy than seasons past.

unspecified-23

“In designing the latest pieces we were inspired by the khaki and dark grey hues that were so prevalent at Maison Fair this past September, the army green especially has a warm earthiness that is so comforting for winter. I’m personally such a fan of these colours and always have been. I’m so glad that I was able to incorporate them into the latest range”, said Mark Tuckey creative director, Louella Tuckey.

unspecified-11

Tote bag in Army Eclipse, $29.95

Featuring seasonal updates of the core collection, we love the pops of on-trend army green and charcoal that feature on everything from large beanbag covers to tote bags – the giant spot motif is especially cool. As with the previous collection, tassels and fringing abound – the square Circus tassel cushion in charcoal, the rectangle tassel bathmat and the large knit cushion are all standouts in the range.

unspecified-18

Square Circus tassel cushion, $39.95

In keeping with the current trend for all things velvet, the range also features plenty of velvet cushions and a pricier limited edition velvet quilt that is available online only and in two colour ways – the collection’s signature blue and dark soot or charcoal. “Adding pops of colour through the velvet items in our living range makes it easy for our community to update their homes with these new season colours and fabrics, which really stand out when paired back with the more neutral products in the collection,” commented Louella.

Velvet quilt in Caton, $199

And as with every other Mark Tuckey + Cotton On collaboration, the price point is super affordable and a great example of luxe for less. We’re predicting a sell-out.

Bed Bath N’ Table’s latest range has a far-flung, exotic vibe

Titled ‘Warm Radiance,’ the latest collection from Bed Bath N’ Table channels an ethnic, gypsy vibe through a kaleidoscope of autumnal shades.

unspecified-11

Pattern and texture combine with a rich palette of earthy red, golden yellow and blue tones that are grounded with cool greys. The patterned tabletop range has a lush, out-of-Marrakech vibe that we see mixed back with basic whites for a global traveller vibe.

unspecified-7

The patterns reference ancient textile prints, and there’s plenty of Oriental-inspired design and traditional paisley too. Importantly, it’s reimagined in a fresh, modern way.

unspecified

We love the all-white textured tea pots, cups and vases – the subtle geometric designs channel chic mid-century ceramics.

unspecified-10

As for fabric specifics, velvet and metallic textiles add a luxurious feel to the range which is in stores and online now.

Meet the artisans behind ethical lifestyle label One Another

Employing over 30 artisans across three small collectives in India, South Africa and Bangladesh, ethical lifestyle label One Another is contributing in a very real way to the plight of women in developing countries. We caught up with owner Rick Carter recently, who explained a bit more about the important work of his company.

unspecified-3One Another designs

“We help provide the dignity of employment with fair pay and clean working conditions. We focus on women with the hope that this provides a long-lasting transformation, where mothers can put food on the table, send their children to school and dream new dreams for themselves and their families,” says Rick.

One such artisan is Akhtar who was married at 17 and abandoned by her new husband soon after. “She’s from a poor but loving family and she’s lucky that her widowed mother, who disapproved of her marriage, took her back into the family home. Others in her position usually find themselves alone. Akhtar’s experience has brought home to all the girls the value of economic independence.”

Akhtar

Akhtar

Another artisan, Nahid, was abandoned by her husband, even though their marriage was arranged in the traditional way – soon after, she returned to live with her parents with her little boy in tow. “Nahid’s embroidery work is exquisite and she exclusively embroiders our Bianca Cash Flags, but she has two mouths to feed and she has agreed to learn how to use the sewing machine. The independence that comes with the higher income will give her a much better chance of being in a position to determine her own future. For now, her little boy comes along to work with her and is the darling of the workshop. We admire her strength of character, which has shone through in this situation,” says Rick.

Nahid

Nahid

As for the design process, Rick and his wife Annette design all the pieces from their Sydney studio. “Sometimes there is a bit lost in translation during the sampling process but it’s always exciting to see something go from sketch to reality to sitting on the couch in someone’s home,” he says.

unspecified-15
“This collection, we have pared back our designs to really focus on the handmade qualities of our products. From fabric made on old wooden looms to hand stitching, loop weaving and knitting, it is all these hands that create beautiful texture and slight variations that make each piece unique,” says Rick.

unspecified-2

One of our favourite design features is the labelling process – each embroiderer or weaver hand-signs the pieces they make. “This means customers actually know the name of the artisan in India or Africa that they have helped support through their purchase.”

unspecified

Nahid’s gorgeous embroidery features on the label’s Bianca Cash flags

This season, the chunky knitted t-yarn cushions, handmade in South Africa, have been a bestseller. “They are not only ethically made but eco, as the t-yarn is cut from the fabric left over from making t-shirts,” says Rick.

Ethical and beautiful – what more could you want?

Tigmi Trading’s Berber rugs are super stunning

It was after an inspirational trip to Morocco over a decade ago that music publicist Danielle McEwan dreamt up Tigmi Trading, an online purveyor of vintage and new Berber rugs, among many other gorgeous, mostly Moroccan, items.

TigmiLifestyle10_002

“It started as a passion project but the business has quickly grown in a lot bigger proposition which I am thrilled about!” says Danielle.

TigmiLifestyle3_001

Tigmi (meaning ‘my home’ in the Berber dialect) Trading, also sell beanbags made from vintage materials, handmade towels, blankets, cushions, hammocks and original artwork – the latter by notable Sydney artist Sylvia McEwan.

TigmiLifestyle5_008

“We carefully source beautiful and rare Berber rugs and artefacts from Morocco and around the globe. Our aim is to present an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary pieces which provide cultural curiosity and support traditional methods of production,” says Danielle.

unnamed-6

Celebrating the imperfections of the handmade, the available Berber rugs are some of the most beautiful on the market.

unnamed-5

“We love timeless pieces that tell a story, add warmth and texture to our lives and will become treasured pieces of the home,” says Danielle who works with artisans in the Atlas Mountains to create bespoke pieces too.

IKEA & Katie Eary’s out of this world homewares collection

To be frank, IKEA’s latest collection, GILTIG, is absolutely cray-cray. A unique collaboration with London-based menswear designer Katie Eary, the range of tableware and home textiles is guaranteed to turn up the senses.

PH131926

Full of gobsmacking patterns (I’m talking googly-eyed fish, blood-red brains and startled-looking cats), Katie herself will tell you her work is in your face, over the top and too much. But that’s just how she likes it. “I always make the reference to contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas. Their work has too much colour, is overtly sexual and there are dead animals everywhere. They turn everything upside down and leave you with a feeling of love or hate. That’s the feeling I want to emulate in my work.”

PH131929

PH132072

Limited edition, the GILTIG collection is the first in a series of collaborations with fashion designers – and a way for IKEA to explore new ways of thinking. While Katie had never designed home furnishings, as a print-based designer, who favours unique patterns and colour mixes – all made possible through digital printing, it seemed like a natural progression. “GILTIG was always going to be a print-based collection. The idea of creating something amazing on screen and knowing it’s going to look the same when you put it on a product is very appealing to someone like me. Digital print is photo real whereas 2D print is just so basic and boring. I want the colour to make the eyes hurt, that’s what I always say.”

PH131700

PH131668

Made up of plates, cups, bowls, lamp shades, cushion covers, tea towels, aprons and tote bags (and a great deal more), Katie believes a good home is not about having lots of flashy things, but about having things that complement your personality. “A decade or so ago, you could get an idea about who a person was from their CDs or books. Now it seems that, as far as the home goes, furniture and personal bits and pieces are the last things left that show your true identity. When you walk into a home, it’s like you’re walking into that person’s brain.”

PH132073

With a collection that’s based on a mad dinner party with fish that jump off the plates, bowls that look you in the eye and cups brimming with cats, it’s sure to make your home stand out from the rest.

Available from April.

8 homewares trends for autumn/winter 2016

By Chris Tourgelis

As we move away from summer, it’s not just the weather that changes but our interiors too. Gone are the bright and warm homewares and in their place are bold metallics, dark shades and rich textures. Below OPUS’s Chris Tourgelis shares his eight top trends for the impending seasons.

1. MetallicsmetallicsStill very strong and now getting a little darker in tone (moving away from bright copper). Dark gunmetal metallics and black metallic seem to be happening right now and copper is getting dirtier and darker in tone.

2. Rich organics

The whole marble aesthetic is not going away for now. Customers love raw marble mixed with very raw and rough timber homeware accessories. Some of our best-selling new items combine these two elements perfectly (like paddle cutting boards made of marble and timber).

3. Glass is not just glass

glass

When you’re talking about homewares you simply can’t ignore glassware and vases. This season the look is more organic and less polished, almost a little industrial. This goes back in with the rich organics trend mentioned above. In some cases glassware is also being combined with those dirty metallics in applications like ornate jars.

4. Colours

colours

Dusty pink, navy, emerald green and metallics are very strong right now. These tones are evident right across the homewares industry, from accent pieces to furniture and right throughout soft furnishings.

5. Rich textiles

Lots of velvet, organic looking (imperfect) rich woollen rugs and cushions and lots of Moroccan-inspired pieces dominated this year’s trade shows.

6. Natural furniture

natural

Marble tables combined with rough timber is a very popular look. Rattan furniture is still very ‘in’ and the trend here is thick cut bamboo (lightly stained) with lots of lovely geometric forms.

7. Kids stuff

Educational toys that are also environmentally friendly steal the show. Parents are now looking for durable and less disposable toys that are also ‘green’ and are a bit more upmarket.

8. Green kitchen

Gadgets are still big but there is a big shift towards healthy eating and more natural ways of living. One of the big hits of last year was the vegetable ‘spiraliser’ which makes vegetable pasta. Customers are also really into healthy ways to store food and beautiful ways to hold household waste (Joseph and Joseph are leading the way in this category). We now sell waste bins that are just under $500. There was simply no call for this sort of thing three or five years ago!

All the products pictured are available at OPUS.

We love the ‘border art’, which is printed specifically on the edges of the bedhead. It’s a great way to subtly add some spark. We’re also fans of the resin buttons, inspired by organic river stone shapes. They’re available in marbled and plain matte finishes.

Haymes and Etsy team up for perfect colour collaboration

The recent collaboration between Haymes Paint and Etsy is definitely worth getting excited about. Fabulous colours combined with beautiful handmade products? What’s not to love!

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71505

At the root of this collaboration is Haymes’ desire to change the way they release colours. Shifting from set release dates for ranges, they are developing a ‘Colour Library’, where new hues will be released as they become relevant to the style scene.

Wendy Rennie, colour and concept manager at Haymes, says the rise of digital platforms is changing how people access trends. “We are seeing a more fluid environment when it comes to colours and trends. The Colour Library allows us to move away from putting a date on colour.”

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71568

To help celebrate the launch of this innovative way of releasing colours, Haymes teamed up with Etsy. What better partner than the online marketplace of creativity and individual design itself?

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71662

Haymes were inspired to work with Etsy after seeing the breadth of beautiful and unique talent available from the site’s artisans. They gave 11 local Etsy makers the colour palette of Curate (the first of seven volumes in the library) and encouraged them to run free with it.

The results are stunning. The artists have brought the library to life, making gorgeous ceramics, textiles and artworks with the blue, coral, tan and cement hues (as the swatches below show).

Curate_palette

What’s even nicer is that each product and colour combination has a unique backstory, reflecting the diverse background of Etsy’s makers.

Bea Bellingham, for example, is a ceramicist from Sydney. Her playful range of homewares is gorgeous, using the Curate colours to create a fun 100s and 1000s pattern. They really look like fairy bread! Pictured below, the bottom left ceramic cup.

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71710

Alistair Birrell, better known as Mr Draper, has used the natural hues to create beautiful homespun textiles (see the rust cloth pictured above). Tired of the disposable nature of cloth homewares, he was inspired to join Etsy to create something more long-lasting. Originally a military man, his pieces are both beautiful and, to use his words, “ruthlessly practical”.

Curate was launched in Sydney this week. With six more libraries to be released, the potential for even more exciting colours and collaborations only grows.

Check out Curate and the other libraries.

Interior trend: The best velvet buys

With the 1970’s back on the fashion radar, it’s permeating our interiors too. And while we’re loving all the tassels and fringing, velvet would have to be our favourite textile of the era. Classic, opulent and sumptuous, velvet is back in a big way.

Creative wonderland of Finders Keepers returns to Sydney

Finders Keepers returns to their spiritual home at Eveleigh’s Australian Technology Park from the 29th of April to the 1st of May. As Australia’s leading maker market, there will be a fantastic range of goods on sale.

Photo: Dave Kan

One of the most enchanting things about Finders Keepers is that you are literally surrounded by beautiful and unique products, with the creative minds behind them on hand to assist you or have a chat should you be interested.

Find homemade ceramics, hand poured and deliciously scented candles, original artworks and cushions and homewares suited for whatever room you’re decorating.

There is innovative and one-of-a-kind fashion, accompanied by a plethora of handmade jewellery stalls. Just as much as I enjoy browsing the clothes for sale, I love checking out the outfits stallholders and customers put together for inspiration. The whole market is imbued with creativity, not least the people in it!

Urban Cartel. Photo: Dave Kan

Artist Leah Bartholomew, the mind behind homewares label Beneath The Sun, is featuring fine art at Finders Keepers this year. She says it’s this variety and chance to meet customers and fellow designers that draws her to the market.

“Hands down my favourite thing about the marker is meeting everyone who supports my brand, and interacting with fellow designers. It is such a highly professional setup where we get to showcase our work in beautiful buildings and be surrounded my top quality work.”

Beau Wylie. Photo credit Bec Taylor

It’s this opportunity to interact and share creatively that is making Shane Thompson, creator of leather goods label Afternoons With Albert, so excited to be participating in his debut Finders Keepers. He is excited to show customers the passion and authenticity that he puts into his work.

Angus and Celeste. Photo: Bec Taylor

Shane is just one of many first-time stallholders at the market this year. Finders Keepers ensures that approximately 30% of the 200-plus stallholders are brand new, meaning that new and exciting items being created by community members have a chance to show off their work.

This is part of the magic of Finders Keepers – designers and artists at different stages of development meet and feed of each other. According to market organisers, the shoppers and community itself also helps nurture this growth.

So if you’re in the market for bespoke and handmade goods, or even if you’re not (I’m yet to come away from Finders Keepers empty-handed despite intentions otherwise!), check out Finders Keepers. I can guarantee you’ll come away happy and inspired!

Stunning soft furnishings inspired by character, Eadie

With over 500 stockists throughout Australia and New Zealand, Eadie Lifestyle’s gorgeous line of soft furnishings has a growing following and a new, improved website which will make it easier for you to purchase direct.

Eadie_11

Bursting onto the scene just two years ago, Eadie Lifestyle’s covetable range of cushions, throws and bedding is designed by a small in-house creative team and features bespoke fabrics woven and dyed by Indian artisans. It’s a stylish range that is not too focused on current trends – instead, inspiration is drawn from the fictional character of Eadie herself.

Eadie_10

“Eadie is a character that I step into when I design the collections,” reveals managing director Trudie Cox. “She has a distinct personality and identity. I know the wine she drinks, the art she appreciates and everything in the range is inspired by an Eadie experience – whether it be a love affair or a destination she has recently visited.”

Eadie_03

The brand eschews trends and instead creates timeless, enduring pieces that people can enjoy for many years. “Our mantra is to offer a really good investment piece and to be the landscape behind the more seasonal decorative cushions that you can buy. We’re about designing something that can last many years,” says Trudie.

Eadie_06

“I deliberately don’t follow trends or surround myself with them. I really channel into Eadie and her personality and what comes from the heart. That really guides us. We work off gut instinct and create what we love. We’ve got some really lovely timeless designs and it’s just a matter of giving them a seasonal tweak.”

Eadie_01

The 2016 winter collection is a Scandi-inspired range with a younger feel than what we’ve come to expect from the brand. “I wanted it to be fresh, light, happy and more fun,” says Trudie, who has incorporated plenty of nice new textures and screen-prints. We love!

Kip & Co’s new AW16 collection has a touch of magic

Brimming with bold prints, a gorgeous colour palette and signature quirk, it would seem it’s business as usual for Kip & Co with their Autumn Winter 2016 collection.

3 KipCoAW16-14840

“The Stardust collection has something a bit fantastical and magical about it. It’s also got a very feminine soft colour palette that works with the season’s stone fruit, soft rose, burnt brandy, grape and silver,” says Hayley Pannekoecke, of Kip & Co.

2 KipCoAW16-14821

Along with a great range of sleepwear, the brand has added travel bags to its line-up for the first time. “They are the ultimate weekender bag and they feature leather trims, brass hardware and Kip & Co detailing. They’re the perfect accessory for the memory-making wanderer,” says Hayley of the bags that come either entirely in leather or in printed or plain waxed canvas with leather trim.

9 KipCoAW16-15915

Travel bag

“Every season, we take inspiration from the things going on in our world. From the little moments to the big adventures, trinkets we pick up at markets, and things our kids doodle,” says Hayley. And with so many children around them, it makes sense that the range features plenty for the little ones too – this season, fans will be able to purchase bassinet sheets for the first time. “They are a great alternative to the safe, sweet, traditional baby stuff.”

KipCoAW16-0634

Bassinet sheets – a first for the brand

7 KipCoAW16-15441

We’re particularly fond of the multi-purpose quilted floor mats which are available in a number of new prints.

KipCoAW16-0198

“There really isn’t anything else like the floor mats around – they’re perfect for home and great to pop in your bag if you’re heading over to a mate’s place to show off your rug rat. They’re practical and stylish which is a pretty good combo!” says Hayley.

5 KipCoAW16-15044

Diehard fans of the brand will be excited to see there is plenty of the brand’s signature velvet in the new collection too.

KipCoAW16-1065

“Velvet pillows have basically changed my life! There is nothing like sleeping on velvet. There’s something about the depth of colour and texture of velvet that you just can’t compete with and as we move into winter, it’s the ultimate friend to keep you snug at night.”

Master bedroom

“I’ve always been very drawn to a more traditional design style which is a combination of coastal and European. In recent years, the American coastal style of the Hamptons has become very popular here in Australia and I think this is because it translates so well in our climate,” says Colleen, a keen renovator and self-described design obsessive.

Overlooking a lake in the lush hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Colleen’s home was completely overhauled from a dilapidated condition to the splendor we see today.

Kitchen

“The house was in a very sad state when I bought it. There were pavers on the kitchen floor and the internal walls didn’t even reach the ceiling! The original floor plan was pokey and there was very little natural light,” says Colleen who set about gutting the interior down to the slab while preserving the original casement windows and exposed ceiling beams.

“My first priority was to add a new deck to create an outdoor living space that captured the panoramic hinterland view. I also added a sandstone patio to the rear of the house, renovated the exterior with smooth render and installed new roof sheeting,” says Colleen.

As for the finishing touches, Colleen worked with her friend Leigh Boswell of Highgate House to design the interiors. “I had a very clear idea of the look I wanted – soft, serene and very feminine,” says Colleen who sourced some of the furniture and lighting from America and had custom made banquette seating installed in the dining room.

The lounge room

“The gorgeous roman blind fabric in the bedroom is from Schumacher. We wanted to make this the focal point of the room, so all other fabrics and finishes stayed neutral,” says Colleen who’s frustration with the local homewares scene inspired the creation of her online store Gloria Linen and Home, launched in 2015.

“I found it endlessly frustrating that so much of what we see in homewares in Australia seems to be largely the same. As soon as something becomes a trend, it instantly loses appeal for me as I have an aversion to mass production of any kind,” says Colleen who makes sure to stock timeless pieces that have a classic, stylish pedigree.

“Artisanal, unique and timeless pieces that are beautifully crafted never lose their lustre and transcend passing fads,” says Colleen who sources her wares from across the world – French table cloths and glassware, bed and bath linens from Portugal and hand-crafted pieces from India round out the gorgeous range.
