We asked The Block judge and interior designer Darren Palmer what he thinks of our monthly Instagram styling challenge 7 Vignettes. Watch what he had to say in this short video…
If you’ve been thinking about getting on board and joining in the fun, find out more here.
We had another wonderful reader event with The Block’s Darren Palmer in Sydney on Friday, at BoConcept in Crows Nest.
A crowd of more than 100 people came along to listen to me interviewing Darren and sharing his insider take on The Block as well as insight on how he got to be where he is today, tips on decor and getting into the interiors industry. He was a popular guest of honour with plenty of people queuing up to have their photo taken with him and ask him questions.
Later in the evening, the crowd were let loose on the BoConcept showroom to move anything they liked and create their own vignettes, uploading them to Instagram for the chance to win a fabulous BoConcept stool worth almost $500. The lucky winner was Tessa White.
Guests mingled and met each other, having got to know each other first through the monthly 7 Vignettes challenge on Instagram. I loved meeting so many of you. It is always a pleasure and I swear I have the nicest (and most creative) blog readers in Australia!
A huge thank you to Darren and our event partner BoConcept. There’ll be more events in Sydney and interstate before the end of 2014, but first my 6-month overseas trip!
It’s 7 Vignettes time again this Sunday (1 December) and, it’s been a while, but I’ve decided to be the judge this month. I see it as a real treat!
Here’s the themes list (above) with all of them suggested by you, the reader, as requested last month. You may notice a subtle festive flavour!
And I have a great prize too, thanks to Lujo: two indoor beanbag chairs in your choice of colour, delivered to your door in time for Christmas (and who doesn’t need extra seats at Christmas?!) worth almost $600!
As I’m currently in Japan, the land of washi tape, it seems particularly appropriate to be offering a HUGE bundle of the lovely stuff as the prize for next month’s 7 Vignettes, starting on Friday (I know, I know, it comes around so fast!).
Here’s the themes list you’ve been waiting for:
Thanks to the lovely folk at Little Paper Lane in Sydney’s Mona Vale, we have this great prize for you. And I’m delighted to announce that store owner Jayde Leeder is our guest judge for November.
It was another amazing month and I was so glad to have Jacinta Preston on board as guest judge. She really got into the spirit of the thing and got involved. She also had the hard job of choosing the winner and runners-up which is something I try and avoid because I want everyone to win!
Anyway, without further ado, the overall winner is
Oh, what a wonderful eighth round of 7 Vignettes it was! and I’m delighted to announce the overall winner and 10 runners up, as judged by Alexandra Kentmann from Freedom.
The first prize, of a chevron Freedom chair, goes to professional organiser Sarah Shanahan, from Adelaide. Alexandra said: “I have a real weakness for colour, bright hits of colour woo me every time. Plus Sarah’s shots have a real authenticity which I find appealing. Plus the vignette including her children’s works; well that gave me a cute attack, and pretty well sealed the deal.”
It’s that time again! One week until the next round of 7 Vignettes starts on 1 August. The first prize is this taupe chevron chair worth $399 from Freedom. But there are 10 runner up prizes too!
I think you could easily incorporate this piece into most homes, in a living room or bedroom, don’t you? That’s the beauty of taupe!
It’s always tough, but this month’s judge, Kate Reeves Robertson from The Story of Us, chose @erikarax as our sixth 7 Vignettes champion.
“It was a gorgeous week of sublime hues, fab framing and organised chaos, but it was the elegantly restrained frames by Erika that caught my eye and inspired my imagination every day,” said Kate. “Clean, refined and simply beautiful.”
I loved the simplicity of Erika’s pictures too, and discovering her lovely blog was an added bonus.
Congratulations, Erika! You get to work with Kate to create your own custom stationery set. I have to admit, I’m jealous!
Here’s Shantel Ross’s gorgeous entry for the gold theme:
Guest judge Suzie Atkin, of Urban Road, had a hard job deciding. Good job it was long weekend! “I was blown away by all of the amazing entries and just thrilled to see so much talent, it was a visual feast! I found it very difficult to select just one winner but there was something about the vignettes of eatlivelaugh that I just adore. So creative and visually just stunning, I love each and every entry. They all work together beautifully and the rustic vintage feel they have is divine.”
Suzie and I both loved her gold entries (of which there were 3!) the best. In fact, that was my favourite day of this month’s challenge. So many sparkly, glamorous images! Which was your favourite theme of the week?
Exciting news, folks! We have a fabulous prize for one lucky winner in next week’s 7 Vignettes Instagram challenge (starting on 1 June): two extra large canvases of your choice from Urban Road’s new collection, released this week. Which would you choose? I’d choose these two!
Every month since we started in January, 7 Vignettes, the Interiors Addict Instagram photo challenge, gets bigger and better and with its amazing community.
“Her entries were consistently fantastic,” says Amber. “I’m really drawn to flat lay and her composition was really thoughtful. The chalkboard background gave them a really distinctive look, I knew who they belonged to even from the thumbnails. The objects used were really varied and I loved the different interpretations of each theme. If I had to pick a favourite from all her entries it was day 2.”
Can you believe it’s only a week until the fourth 7 Vignettes? Here’s the list for the next round…
We’re really lucky to have Dinosaur Designs’ Louise Olsen as our guest judge this time. We also have two great prizes in the form of $200 gift vouchers from gorgeous online stores: Cabin & Castle and Zohi Interiors.
As if 7 Vignettes wasn’t already enough of a feel-good, creative share-fest, it’s now started attracting the younger generation too! This month I noticed two young participants in particular: 9 year-old ‘India Kitty’ and ’13 Year Old Vignetter’ (real name Radha) who created her account especially for the photo challenge!
Simone Patterson, Radha’s mum, said: “There was instant curiosity when she saw me pulling the place apart and building vignettes. I showed her the hashtag on Instagram and that was it, she was off on a vignette frenzy! She enjoyed the creative process, but she especially enjoyed seeing all the likes and lovely comments from other vignetters, and says it made her feel ‘awesome’.
“She loved watching all the other vignettes getting uploaded throughout the day and seeing all the different styles. I was more than happy for her to take part because, as an interiors addict myself, it was a joy to watch Radha get so engrossed in the process of developing her own style and expressing her individuality and creativity in this way.”
Guest judge Darren Palmer and I were equally impressed with her consistent effort throughout the entire week (never mind the outtakes which have continued to be posted as extras ever since!). This is why she won…
It was such a tricky choice this month with so many stunning entries! I think even Darren might agree it was tougher than judging a room on The Block! But we both feel pretty confident we picked the right person. Darren, who said the quality of everyone’s work was inspiring, added: “Dee definitely had the most vignettes I liked over the week. Great work all round and there were many entries in my shortlist. I was so happy to see such great style and skill out there!”
There’s something seriously cool going on over at Instagram, have you heard? It’s called 7 Vignettes in 7 Days and it’s my latest Instagram photo challenge in collaboration with stylist and queen of the vignette, Kara Rosenlund.
I’m excited to announce Interiors Addict’s latest Instagram challenge: 7 Vignettes in 7 Days!
You can probably guess what this one’s all about, but I’ll spell it out anyway. Each day, from this Saturday, you must snap a vignette inspired by the corresponding word on the list. It’s a bit more interactive than usual because I’m guessing not many people have 7 vignettes in their home or, if they do, they probably don’t fit my list exactly! So it’s time to have some fun and be creative, play stylist, and maybe create some new and lovely focal points in your home!
Not everyone knows what this French word actually means, so I asked super stylist Kara Rosenlund, a veritable queen of the vignette (seriously, she makes it look so easy!), to explain. “A vignette to me is essentially a unique visual short story,” she said. “It’s told through using an arrangement of smaller objects gathered together to tell a tale that is only yours. It can be as simple or as grand as you like; a pile of seashells in different sizes gathered from a distant seaside trip laid out on a shelf, to a Metro ticket, a small plastic tacky Eiffel Tower and a Champagne cork from Paris treasured as souvenirs on a mantle.”
I couldn’t think of anyone better to judge the winner of this competition, which, as always, is just for fun, than Kara.
Not surprisingly, she has vignettes everywhere in her own home, but they’re not just for stylists. “They are super fun and super easy and are generally inexpensive and can be easily rearranged when you feel like a change. Adding a vignette gives you a reason and allows you to display your favourite bits and found collections in a way that tells a story and may remind you of certain things.”
Kara adds: “On the home front they work really well if you have a difficult area or awkward shelf that really isn’t performing too well (we all have them); arrange a vignette and your eye will be catching the beauty in no time, transforming the drab spot.” There really is no better way to give your space personality and depth, and to reveal something about you.
