Architecture Bathrooms Bedrooms Design Designers Interviews Kitchens Laundry Living Room

Australia’s 2021 ‘Room of the Year’ doubles as kitchen too

Always anticipated, Australian House & Garden’s 2021 Top 50 Room Awards have just been unveiled revealing some of Australia’s best residential architecture and interiors of the year. An annual event, the award celebrates the breadth and creativity found in the Australian residential interiors scene today.

The prestigious ‘Room of the Year’ award went to Sydney architect Jeremy Bull of Alexander & Co. for his glorious kitchen design that features a monolithic cast-concrete island in pale pink which can double as a colossal dining table.

Jeremy Bull won ‘Room of the Year’ and ‘Best Kitchen’ for this gorgeous, multi-purpose space

The room features compartmentalised work areas that could be mistaken for shelving units in a living room, but form functional cooking zones. The kitchen features a Calacatta Viola splashback as well as American Oak joinery that conceals an integrated fridge and pantry. Unsurprisingly, the project won the ‘Best Kitchen’ award too.

“I am deeply grateful to be able to receive this award on behalf of our team and of course I am also so proud of the work we have done. We intended for this house and all its spaces to inspire both our team and clientele to think beyond the traditional. More so, after another year of lockdowns perhaps even to challenge the conceptions we may have about how our homes can be used at large,” says Jeremy.

Best bedroom
The ‘Best Bedroom’ award went to Greg Natale for this stunner

This year saw more than 200 rooms submitted across eight categories and Interiors Addict favourite Greg Natale took out the ‘Best Bedroom’ award for his beautiful project that features the stunning Gucci Heron print wallpaper in green.

Other celebrated beauties including a clifftop bathroom, a cohesive indoor/outdoor living space, contemporary living room, luxurious outdoor retreat, lovely yet functional laundry and a glowing living room with surprising use of colour.

Australian House & Garden’s Top 50 Rooms Awards winners include:

Room of the Year: Jeremy Bull, Alexander & Co

Linen House launch gender-neutral kids collection parents will love

Aussie brand Linen House have launched their latest kid’s collection. The new range features contemporary children’s bed linen and coordinating accessories, helping tiny tots all the way up to tweens transform their bedrooms. After all, a child’s bedroom is the first place they call their own.

The new collection pays tribute to kids and their wandering imaginations, injecting fun, colour, and interactive themes into each design while still remaining fashion forward. The designs allow parents to engage their child’s innate curiosity with nature, encouraging young minds to consider how precious and unique our earth is.

The collection is not separated into genders. Instead, it encourages every child to choose for themselves based on which designs call to them. “It’s great that we’re finally moving to a time where gender-specific designs are becoming less relevant. A child should be able to sleep in anything that makes them feel great, regardless of colour or design,” says senior textile designer, Marieke Bruins.

The collection boasts a variety of prints that will transport your little ones to far off places where they might encounter lizards, leopards, tropical animals, sea creatures and more. Featuring a principal colour scheme of lilac, yellow, navy and light green, that was meticulously chosen to fit in perfectly with the adult range, so the whole family can enjoy Linen House together.

The pieces are made from a range of fabrications and techniques including cotton percale, washed cotton, embroidery and organic washed cotton. The collection includes all the necessary and expected quilt covers and sheet sets, even featuring a nursery range of cot and bassinet bedding. As well as incorporating a range of adorable novelty cushions and accessories.

While Linen House previously offered children’s products under the brand name Hiccups, the new Linen House Kids range is more fashion-forward in colour, styling and themes. Bringing together a melting pot of inspiration to create original twists on traditional themes, every design aims to tell a story with an element of
wonder and magic to appeal to young minds.

Available to purchase online and in Linen House outlet and Myer stores across Australia.

Bedrooms DIY Expert Tips Homewares Jen's reno Living Room

Can DIY measured and installed blinds actually look good? My verdict!

We recently got almost all new windows at home which left me needing to find new window coverings and fast! We had less than a week’s notice that the new windows were coming and we knew we wouldn’t be able to put our plantation shutters back on afterwards because they simply wouldn’t fit.

Our new roman blinds which we measured and installed ourselves
Roman blinds are a great way to let in maximum light in the daytime

Now I absolutely love the look of shutters and five years ago, when we first bought this house (which looked a lot different!), they were the perfect update and, frankly, a great way to disguise our crappy old windows). However, in time we came to realise that our house isn’t blessed with great natural light in the bedrooms and the living room (although we now have skylights, yay!) so we often had to have the lights on in the daytime. Shutters do block quite a lot of natural light so if it’s in short supply in your home, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them. Looks wise alone? Love ’em!

The same blinds, shown half closed, in the boys’ shared bedroom. The blockout lining is very effective!
We love seeing the greenery out of the window now which was hidden by the previous shutters
Close-up of the blinds in Cotswold Soft Grey with blockout lining

So while I was sad we couldn’t reuse the shutters, it was also a blessing in disguise as it meant we could choose something else to let in not only more light but also the lovely garden and green hedge views we have from many rooms. I gave them away on Facebook Marketplace to some very grateful renovators so they haven’t gone to waste or landfill.

Now I am a big sheer curtains lover too but they weren’t going to work in our living room for several practical and layout reasons (it’s not always easy is it?!) and in our bedrooms we have huge wide windows with beds too close to them for curtains to work in them either. Onto my next favourite: roman blinds! I do genuinely think these are an underrated options these days! While I went for a safe grey for mine (because I have a lot of colour in my home already and I like to have fun with that on a neutral base), there are so many options to add colour and pattern which can make a big statement for not a lot of money.

I ordered lots of free fabric samples, even considering patterns for the boys’ rooms and a pale pink for the master bedroom! This really helps you narrow it down.

Once I decided on romans, I got a quote from a custom blind company which ran into several thousand dollars for just four windows, and having just paid for some rather big reno jobs (like a new driveway!) I decided to go with Tuiss Blinds Online (formerly just Blinds Online) instead. I’d used them before for the navy romans in my kitchen. I remembered the price was ridiculously good and I’ve had so many compliments on them since, many from people who hadn’t considered romans before. Another important factor was that the measuring was easy (I managed not to stuff it up) as was the install (you all know my long suffering husband isn’t the handiest!).

This do it yourself blinds option, combined with the great value, really does seem a bit too good to be true and I get it if you’re skeptical. But do you know what, it ain’t rocket science, and having now used them twice, I’m very confident to honestly recommend the process.

Tuiss Blinds Online also have an insane amount of fabrics to choose from (they also do S-fold and classic curtains, roller blinds, outdoor blinds, honeycomb blinds, plantation shutters and much more, by the way). Their designer textiles include William Morris in collaboration with the V&A, Clarissa Hulse, Emma Bridgewater, Scion, Sanderson Home and Harlequin Additions. But yeah, sorry but I went for a pale grey textured choice! Mine was called Cotswold Soft Grey (fitting for someone who grew up near The Cotswolds in England, no?!).

TUISS Blinds Online roman blinds in a customer’s home

You can order multiple fabric samples online for free which really helps, and they arrive in a few days.

Another example of Tuiss’ patterned fabrics

When it comes to measuring yourself, they give great step by step instructions on the site but there really is no trick to this. You then choose between blockout and light-filtering lining (same price) and recess or face-fitting (again, this is all explained in plain English). I went for blockout in the bedrooms and let me tell you, they do their job! I’m a light sleeper and the shutters didn’t block out as much light as these do, so that’s a welcome benefit too. I didn’t choose a blockout lining for the other rooms as it really wasn’t necessary when nobody sleeps in them. This also keeps down the ‘bulk’ of the fabric when the romans are pulled up (concertina-like).

Then you can choose a manual chain system or electric smart raise (for an extra $139 per blind). The latter is powered by an integrated rechargeable battery pack. While I loved the idea of it, I know what our family is like at losing remote controls (as well as how much my kids would try and play with the blinds!) so decided to keep it simple! Incidentally, the install process of the blinds is just the same either way.

What I love about the website is that you get instant quotes by entering your width height and fabric choice etc, so you know exactly what you’re in for.

The four blinds for the living room and playroom came to just over $1,000 and blinds for our three huge (2.5m long) bedroom windows with blockout lining came to just over $1,200. This is so much cheaper than many other places and I’m thrilled with ours. That’s blinds for more than half the windows in our four-bedroom home for $2,200. Amazing, right?! And most people’s windows are smaller than our bedroom ones so that’s probably on the higher end of your average cost.

As for install, it honestly isn’t hard and Damian would back me up here! You literally need a drill and a screwdriver and you install brackets which the blinds then click into. The bedroom windows were a little trickier being so long, but the ‘normal’ sized windows were an absolute piece of cake!

We are thrilled with the look of our blinds and they fit just perfectly. They were, after all, made to measure!

Apart from shutters and Venetian blinds, the Christmas cutoff for all other products hasn’t happened yet so you still have time to order yours in time for the festive season. I’m still deciding what we will do in a few of our rooms as we are tossing up swapping playroom and office which will affect which room is the guest bedroom (it never ends here!) and the boys are currently enjoying sharing a bedroom having previously had one each (why did we move to a four-bedroom house in the burbs again?!). I like the fact I can just order the rest when I’m ready. They’re dispatched within 10-to-14 days for most of Australia.

The company has been around for 15 years (but much longer offline) and I’d encourage you to check out their online reviews which are excellent. This post isn’t sponsored although Tuiss did gift me the blinds. My views are 100% honest and like I say, I have used them before, independently, at my own cost. Delivery is free on orders over $499 with a few exceptions and there’s a free extended five-year warranty on everything.

If you have any questions or want to check on delivery times of certain products to your area of Australia, you can call customer service on 1300 761 179 or email [email protected]

Pretty in pink: ways to add this popular colour to your bedroom

Sponsored by Manchester Collection

Pink never goes out of fashion but it can put some people off with the idea that it’s too feminine. But there are plenty of ways to add pink to your bedroom in a stylish and elegant way. Here’s three!

A pop of pink

Consider just a shot of pink as an accent with cushions or a throw. We love this velvet oblong cushion and Dylan throw.

Pink Euros are another way to achieve this. We love this velvet version.

Subtle sheets

If a pink quilt cover is a bit much for you, how about combining a plain white one with a pink sheet set so you just see a little of it? We love contrasting quilts and sheets rather than being too matchy-matchy.

The 400 thread count sheet set in blush is a great affordable option.

Or check out a slightly different hue in the 1000 thread count cotton rich sheet set below. There’s no such thing as just one pink!

A blushing bathroom

Perhaps add your pink to your en suite. There’s nothing like fresh fluffy towels! We like these patterned Sorrento towels in blush as well as the more traditional cotton towels in pink.

-Manchester Collection is the destination for your bed linen and home decor needs. Offering contemporary as well as classic styles, they specialise in quality, unique products at affordable prices. They work direct with manufacturers abroad to bring on trend home fashion to you direct, thereby passing on savings.

Latest children’s bedding: Flower Fairies and Star Wars feature

I don’t know about you but I’m thoroughly enjoying giving my house a solid spring clean and refresh in time for summer. And nowhere do I feel this is more necessary than in my kids’ rooms where new bed linen is a must. From iconic flower fairies to Star Wars, there’s plenty to love about our latest children’s bedding picks.

Kip & Co x Flower Fairies
Since their first publication in 1923, Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies have enchanted both adults and children alike making them perfect fodder for Kip & Co’s latest children’s bedding collaboration.

“There’s nothing like the moment you see your first fairy, fluttering around at the bottom of the garden where it’s over-grown and wild. This collection takes you right back to that moment, to cherish with your little ones all over again”, says Kip & Co co-founder Kate Heppell.

The limited-edition collection includes organic cotton bedding for kids and babies, cushions, play mats, blankets, swaddles and bibs. From $15.

Adairs Star Wars collection
Very different in tone from the above, the Adairs Star Wars collection is super fun. It’s also a lovely, subtle take on your typical cartoon emblazoned, novelty bedding. Featuring all of the Start Wars iconic characters (including Dark Vader, R2-D2 and Yoda), the range includes bed linen, baskets and nursery pieces. From $34.99.

Incy celebrates 10th birthday with re-launch of the Spindle collection

To celebrate Incy Interiors’ 10th birthday, founder Kristy Withers has relaunched the brand’s iconic Spindle bedroom range. Previously sold between 2015 and 2019, the Spindle collection was a common fixture in celeb homes and even made it into our publisher Jen’s son Sebastian’s baby nursery!

The collection consists of the Penny Single Bed ($999), Penny King Single Bed ($1,199), Jude Bookcase ($599) and Jack Side Table ($499), all handcrafted from New Zealand pine.

Flashback: Jen used the Spindle change table in son Sebastian’s nursery back in 2015 in a custom aqua colour. It has followed him through various bedrooms since as a dresser, until deciding to share with his brother Charlie this year.

Followers of the leading Australian kids’ furniture brand have long been requesting the return of the popular design and it seemed fitting to re-launch the range during a milestone year. The Spindle bedroom range extends upon the classic Spindle Georgia Cot and Lucy Change Table.

Faced with challenges from health restrictions during the pandemic and lockdowns, Incy returned to its roots to pull off this product launch, working outside locked down LGAs. The campaign was shot in Orange NSW, where Kristy and her family live.

“It was serendipitous that due to Covid lockdowns we were forced to do the photoshoot in regional NSW where we did the original Spindle shoot,” said Kristy.

A super stylish heritage home makeover in rural NSW

After moving to Australia over 20 years ago from Mexico, Cecilia Mazadiego was very happy living in the Sydney seaside suburb of Clovelly with her property developer husband Sam Brewer and their young son Luca. But with the onset of COVID-19 and the initial lockdown, the family escaped to their beloved Kangaroo Valley and decided to make the move permanent as a result.

“We purchased a farm in Kangaroo Valley four years ago so know the area well. My husband fell in love with farm life – we have cattle. I didn’t want to leave Sydney but after spending four months here last year I fell in love with it too,” says Cecilia.

After deciding to move, it became apparent that it was going to be difficult to find a house to purchase (their farm has no dwelling on it), given most properties are heavily booked as holiday rentals. “This little cottage came on the market, and we checked it out. We thought we could do a quick reno and move in,” says Cecilia of the gorgeous 1918 home that she overhauled with the help of architect Gian Cerruti over a nine month period. “Sam and I were very involved with everything. I chose all the finishes and colours,” says Cecilia.

“We wanted to keep the heritage house and re-use whatever we could and bring it alive. It was very beautiful. For the back addition, we were careful to build something that didn’t dominate the heritage front. We wanted something that blended so that the transition was smooth,” says Cecilia.

From picture rails to decorative ceilings, timber windows and Huon pine floors, the original home has plenty of gorgeous details – they just needed some love. “Those details really are the essence of the home,” says Cecilia who improved the original home’s light and ventilation by adding extra matching period windows that were salvaged from the back of the original home.

The light-filled rear extension features concrete, recycled bricks and black steel windows in an area that includes an open plan kitchen, dining, formal living room, office and laundry. “We used recycled timber beams on the ceiling. It was really beautiful to see how it looked altogether without overpowering the original house,” says Cecilia.

One of the biggest splurges of the renovation, the extension features a gorgeous terrazzo tile from Onsite. “We fell in love with that tile at first sight. It is so beautiful, but it was very expensive,” says Cecilia.

The best way to make over your bedroom for Spring: a new quilt cover!

Sponsored by Manchester Collection

If a change of season isn’t a good excuse to change things around at home then I don’t know what is. I mean, I’m not saying you need an excuse, but if you were looking for one, Spring is it! And the easiest way to change up the look of your bedroom in particular, is with a fresh quilt cover set.

Manchester Collection have a huge range for every taste (and also a huge sale at the moment) so I picked my top 10 for you, whether you love patterned or plain, classic or relaxed.

Cascade Quilt Cover Set

There are two types of quilt cover people in the world: patterned and plain! If you fall into the former then this has to be the epitome of a spring quilt cover for a bit of a seasonal switch up!

Amari White Quilt Cover Set

If you don’t really want to commit to pattern but you don’t want plain either, then here is your happy medium! I’d also bet this doesn’t need ironing! You can make this yours by adding your choice of cushions and a throw or just enjoy that all-white look with plenty of texture. A great purchase if you ask us! It also comes in pale pink and grey.

Dawson Quilt Cover Set

Spring florals don’t have to be pink and this blue design will give your bedroom a super fresh look too.

Ritz 1000TC Embroidered White with Quilt Cover Set

If you love that luxury hotel bed look and feel, this is the one for you and it comes with a choice of contrasting navy, mocha, black, navy or silver embroidery on the white cotton base.

Soho 1000 Thread Count Quilt Cover Set Blush

If you love the crisp, cool feel of hotel bed linen but want something a little plainer, this is made of long staple cotton in a buttery smooth weave. 5-star luxury in your home! This comes in eight colours and co-ordinating sheets and accessories are also available.

Jax Chunky Waffle Shadow Quilt Cover Set

Waffle’s another classic choice but I love the extra texture of this particular design. And the green is a lovely colour for spring but it also comes in even more classic white, a pale bright blue, neutral linen, charcoal and even a floral design. Bonus points for NO IRONING REQUIRED!

Remy Quilt Cover Set

I love the subtle dusty pale pink of this one, which is quite a traditional jacquard brought right up to date with the colour. It definitely says Spring to me!

Vintage Washed Linen Quilt Cover Set

They do say once you’ve slept on linen you’ll never go back and I personally love how it gets softer with each wash, it goes with everything, it looks deliberately a bit creased (what’s an iron again?!) and of course it’s all natural and breathable and great for all seasons. This comes in silver (pictured), white, linen and charcoal and is stonewashed. A great neutral basic, you can let it shine on its own or layer it up with cushions, throws and contrasting sheets.

Jersey Quilt Cover Set

As soft as your favourite t-shirt, this set is a lovely, relaxed choice and feels lovely on your skin. We also like the hidden zip. So popular it comes in eight colour ways!

Medici White Bedspread

Happy with your existing quilt cover but want to add a layer or replace the doona entirely with something more lightweight for summer? You can’t go past this pretty white coverlet!

Gingham, reversible quilts and more Spring goodies from Sheet Society

Sponsored by Sheet Society

Sheet Society have a fresh new spring collection and we’re mad for it. It’s fresh, tactile and a great mood lifter as we leave behind the colder weather and (soon enough) lockdowns, welcoming some holiday vibes into our homes.

We’re loving the uplifting spring colours in The Sheet Society’s Spring range

“Inspired by picnic pandemonium and dreams of faraway places, we created a capsule that feels transportive and light. Retro resort-like colour palettes that instantly supercharge and uplift our moods as we wave goodbye to the cooler months. It’s escapism for your bedroom,” says CEO Hayley Worley.

The reversible, breathable Goldie Gauze in Butter and subtly contrasting Burnt Butter

An innovative new textural offering, Goldie Gauze is a reversible, tactile quilt cover that was made for lightweight feels and versatility. Goldie is produced using 100% cotton yarns to create a light, open weave that produces the cloth-like finish. It’s made from three separate layers of gauze tacked together to softly layer up the density of the finished fabric.

“The ultimate benefits of this fabric are its breathability and natural fibre origins, making it a perfect trans seasonal product,” says Hayley.

The spring capsule is made up of tried-and-tested ranges that regular Sheet Society customers know and love, infused with new sun-kissed colours. The two newest colourways include Sky and Musk, which look great alongside Soft Apricot, Chocolate, Camel and Butter from bedspreads past.

New solid colours in the Eden range include Sky (above) and Musk (below)

Alongside these solids comes a much-anticipated release of gingham print (we can’t get enough of gingham at Interiors Addict!). The resurgence of the long-adored gridded style was first seen on the runway, and is now increasingly making its way into our homes too.

We love this smaller, more modern take on the classic gingham, shown here in Sky

And while we’re talking classics, stripes of course never get old. Sheet Society have two new Leo washed cotton stripe colours too; we particularly love the Camel (below).

Each piece of bedding, whether it’s a sheet, quilt cover, or pillowcase is made with a quality yarn composition of breathable, 100% natural fibres. The flat sheet even comes with a sewn-in 20cm double layer, so there’s no need to fold them back either.

Two new Eve linen colours are the beautiful Cocoa (above) and Tan (below) chambrays.

“We know that traditionally, people have been frustrated with their bedding, and this increases tenfold in the Australian summer. Making your bed can be a notoriously arduous task, but we believe quality fabrication and tactful detailing can put an end to that. We want your bedding to be more dream-worthy, less of a nightmare, especially after a long winter of waiting for brighter days,” says Hayley.

Seasons are changing. To give your bedroom makeover in full bloom, shop Spring at The Sheet Society.

Melbourne artist’s new renovation full of statement black

Named after the structure that joins the home’s heritage front and modern extension, Colonnade House is the latest creation by the talented team at Melbourne architectural studio Splinter Society. Located in Malvern, the large family home features a gorgeous, black-painted heritage abode at the front with a striking, minimalist extension at the rear.

Black timber makes a statement from the street

“Where the heritage building was lightweight in nature, containing closed, disconnected rooms and was badly sited resulting in a cramped feel, the extension was to be modern, robust, made from concrete and well connected to its garden surrounds,” says Splinter Society’s Asha Nicholas.

In contrast to the original home and its rich, heritage details, the new structure is brimming with masses of contemporary finishes – refined steel, timber, render, and tiles combine to create a moody mix. And in contrast to the smaller, more defined rooms found at the front of the home, the rear extension is a much more open-plan affair.

Gorgeous green Kit Kat tiles provide texture in the ensuite

“Where the old house contains intersecting gabled rooflines, the new mimics these with minimal geometric roof forms and lofty ceilings. Where the old contained decorative timber windows, newly created steel windows abstract their detail linking from old to new,” says Asha.

Home to an artist and art-loving family, the beautifully textured spaces form a backdrop to a constantly changing selection of paintings and sculptures. The home’s sumptuous materials palette providing further relief – there’s beautiful hand brushed timbers, plasters, concrete and ceramic tiles to name but a few features.

The project’s namesake, a concrete colonnade runs centrally through the new extension and connects the old home to the garden. “This functional device filters and screens light between living spaces and the northern pool and garden. Between the columns sits a collection of intimate, sunny, garden-connected window daybeds and pedestals to house sculptures,” says Asha.

Kip & Co’s new Spring/Summer ’21 collection an explosion of blooms

We’re always excited for a new Kip & Co. drop and this week saw the launch of the brand’s Spring/Summer ’21 collection titled Golden Hour. Inspired by countryside weekend escapes, nature is certainly at the forefront – there’s bold florals, statement stripes and tactile tartans in a palette of golden hues, fresh blues, berry shades and ivy greens. Woven linens, giant tassels and plush quilting feature too.

Kip&Co

“The collection is inspired by sweet weekend escapes where time moves slowly, while a wild and abundant nature comes into focus,” says Kip and Co. co-founder Alex McCabe.

The range includes new cushion and rug designs

The brand’s commitment to nature can be seen in its new sustainability focus also, with all of the cotton bedding in this range made from certified organic cotton. This means harmful chemicals, irritants and pollutants have been removed from the brand’s supply chain and there is reduced water usage in the manufacturing process too. With these new practices, this season alone, Kip & Co. will save over 25 million litres of water!

This beautiful striped linen is available in a gorgeous blush shade too

“For the kids, we’re channelling those perfect days, where you can briefly unplug and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life,” says Alex. There are embroidered florals, jumping frogs, diving penguins and a starlit night design. The collection also sees the return of several kids’ favourites including velvet beanbags, petal cushions, duffle bags and floor rugs.

This season’s tabletop offering is rather gorgeous with two new brass napkin rings available in a tropical palm or fish design, perfect for summer entertaining. “We’re getting festive in the kitchen as we head into the season of entertaining. Our beautiful tableware and cutlery celebrate the joy of nourishing and flourishing our bodies and sharing that with those we love the most!” says Alex.

The Block 2021 room reveals: guest bedroom and re-do’s

A nice bit of variety on The Block last night with guest bedrooms, kids bedrooms and the re-do rooms. Here are the scores, the judges’ comments and where to buy what you saw.

Ronnie & Georgia: 1st place

Score: 29/30
Spent: $24,680

From the traditional yet contemporary wallpaper to contrasting yet matching bedhead and cushions, Ronnie and Georgia threw a curveball at the judges with their bedroom this week, but it was one they loved. Declaring this her favourite colour palette of The Block so far, Shaynna thought this was a room with its own style, but still a complement to the rest of the house. Even the challenge artwork seemed to fit, said Neale!

Neale and Darren thought the bedsides were perhaps too low or the bedside lamps too small, but Shaynna disagreed.

Moving to the re-do room – a larger walk-in wardrobe – they were blown away by the transformation. More spacious, better fittings, this was a room that completes the master wing.

Mark & Mitch: 3rd place

Score: 28/30
Spent: $22,461

Whimsical, playful, cute and fun, the judges said and that’s just what Mitch and Mark wanted to hear for their children’s bedroom. With bunkbeds, pistachio-green wardrobes and beautifully styled to lure in a young buyer. Neale noted this is a kids room right now, but one that could be easily converted to an older child’s room or even an office easily. And that’s smart planning.

Shaynna said the roofline was too much with all the skylights as well as the large window. Darren liked it though. They loved the wardrobe and thought the styling was magic.

So too was the re-do bedroom, now a smart addition to the home with its own feel and colour scheme. Neale said it has a bit more pizazz back.

Tanya & Vito: 4th place

Score: 27/30
Spent: $15,220

A built-in bunk, generous wardrobe and ample storage space, a desk and funky styling make this an ideal kids bedroom, perfect to show Tanya and Vito’s house could easily become their home. Neale’s big concern was how easily the room could be converted for an older child or another purpose – the built-in fixtures might make things tricky – but all agreed it’s a great value add for the home.

Shaynna said she found it a bit cold and the edges needed softening.

Re-do bathroom sans brown tiles

So too was the re-do room, now without its polarising brown tiles. Thank God! said all three judges. It’s still a room with personality, but one that won’t divide the market. Darren said it now definitely adds value to the house.

Shop the look: White pop-up desk

Josh & Luke: last place

Score: 20/30
Spent: $17,248

From the highs of the master wing to the lows of this bedroom, Josh and Luke’s rollercoaster Block ride continues with the judges declaring this space a mismatch of style with a colour palette that’s too cold. Some fresh styling was needed, the judges agreed, to bring it into line with the rest of the home.

Let’s face it, nothing went with anything!

Then to the re-do bathroom. Once again the styling and colour palette weren’t what the judges were hoping for, with the floor to ceiling toilet screen the only obvious change… and not one they loved. Shaynna said it looked worse and Neale couldn’t really see what was different.

Kirsty & Jesse: 2nd place

Score: 28.5/30
Spent: $19,855

A Hamptons style kids’ room, styled for a little girl right down to the Dolly Parton storybooks on the shelves, Kirsty and Jesse’s room had a definite style and a definite theme in mind. Not even an upside-down lampshade could dampen the judges’ enthusiasm with Shaynna loving the valance, Neale the Grafico wallpaper and all agreeing it’s a space that shows what a home this can be – while still able to be converted to other uses.

Also converted, was their opinion of the guest bedroom, with Kirsty and Jesse’s re-do bringing a new shade of blue, new bedding, new bedsides and more, winning them over.

Open-plan bedroom and ensuite star in new Greg Natale apartment

Located in Sydney’s Walsh Bay, this two-storey, three-bedroom apartment is the work of the celebrated interior designer, and Interiors Addict favourite, Greg Natale. From the sumptuous architectural curves to the voluptuous furniture and beautiful muted palette, this project is a softer take on Greg’s signature, patterned aesthetic.

Greg Natale
The double-height ceiling makes a dramatic statement in the living room

“The brief requested ‘plenty of curves’ as well as a delicate palette and the use of modern European furniture. The owner wanted a soft, contemporary space filled with fluid lines,” says Greg. Curves aside, the home’s colour palette is rather gorgeous – cinnamon, mustard, violet and grey give the spaces a sophisticated yet playful edge.

Living room
Living room

A deftly executed space, the living room is one of the most striking parts of the property – from a custom made and curved stairway to curved walls, a built-in bench and cabinetry, the space challenges the limits of Gyprock. Crafted from the brand’s Flexible plasterboard range, the product is designed to bend for small radius curves and it certainly helped Greg achieve that shapely design brief.

Greg Natale
Gorgeous artwork and accessories pepper the spaces

“When I’m designing a space, the walls and ceilings are among my first considerations. They’re an essential layer of the architecture, and a wonderful way of introducing pattern into the framework of a room, helping to define its look and add interest and drama,” says Greg.

Kitchen
Kitchen

The kitchen features soft grey marble, brass and statement pendant lights as well as a gorgeous colour palette that merges pink and yellow with white and grey.

The master bedroom is a unique space with its open-plan design. The bed sits adjacent to a walk-in robe while a freestanding bath sits alongside a fully furnished living area. “The master bedroom and ensuite, with its organic lines, continue the apartment’s blend of luxury and comfort in which curves and colours combine to create a sophisticated, serene space,” says Greg.

The Gyprock Flexible plasterboard range was used in this room too where the bulkheads, containing services, were crafted into a curved feature. “Utilising curves in the ceiling coffers resulted in a restrained and elegant layer of detail that suits the soft palette of the space and continues its story of curves.”
