The kitchen is the hero of these new Melbourne apartments

While it’s often said that a kitchen has the power to sell a home, the new Toorak development The Springfield has taken that idea and built an entire block of apartments around it, recognising its pull for potential buyers.

One of The Springfield’s fabulous kitchens

“The kitchen is one of the first places that people inspect and need to know functions well. It is very like the idea of the fireplace in a home as it’s the place where people come together. There is warmth and there is a magic about it that draws people back. Some of the fondest memories we have are of our mother’s favourite recipe and the chats that occur around the island bench. When all this comes together with a strong aesthetic and a high degree of functionality people find it easier to make the decision to buy,” says the project’s architect Tisha Lee of K2LD Architects.

Tisha cites our collective obsession with food as a key driving factor in the kitchen renaissance too. “In recent times, we have seen a large media focus on the art of cooking and bringing restaurant style menus into the home. Several of our own key restaurants in Melbourne (Movida, Grossi, Chin Chin) have published books and television programmes such as Masterchef make it seem trendy and accessible to the average person to be able to engage with and enjoy the art of entertaining around the kitchen,” says Tisha.

But it’s not just our love of cooking, it’s the way we now live that truly puts the kitchen at the centre of the home. “The open plan nature of living has also influenced this change as well. Now the kitchen is a key part of the entertaining area and as such, the kitchen needs to not only be beautiful and inviting, but also highly functional and practical,” says Tisha.

Joinery details

The Springfield kitchens certainly deliver on the aesthetic front which isn’t surprising given they were designed in collaboration with the high-end Italian furniture manufacturer Molteni & C Dada.  Featuring honey-coloured timber, concealed finger pulls, a lavish five-metre-long marble bench top and Gaggenau appliances, they also boast full-scale Butler’s pantries. But these details don’t come cheap as some of the kitchens in the development are valued at nearly half a million dollars!

The Springfield boasts expansive, luxurious bathrooms too

“I love the attention to detail and how the practical is also made attractive. For example, the sink is complete with options for cutting, draining and sorting. It is so large that roasting pans and pots fit in with ease and never need to be left just sitting on the bench. I also like the provision for simple items such as spice holders, cling wrap containers and cutlery trays which take our ordinary objects and make them look beautiful on display. The warmth of the timber veneer is also something to celebrate making the joinery itself sit like a like crafted piece of furniture within the space. And of course, I love the exceptionally long marble island bench (five metres) where you can cook and entertain people at the same time and feel like your own Masterchef!” says Tisha.

Soft pink & concrete collide in this chic Melbourne apartment

While only 10 years old, this two-bedroom Melbourne apartment received the renovation treatment recently resulting in a much more user-friendly design and the addition of a gorgeous soft pink. Dulux ‘Monroe’ is the star of the space and unsurprisingly, it has made the project a finalist in the 2017 Dulux Colour Awards.

“The palette came about as a response to the existing materials present in the apartment shell. We chose materials that complemented the soft mottled tones of the existing concrete wall and doors. We were keen to add some warmth and refinement to the appearance of the new finishes to counterbalance the rawness of the concrete, hence the introduction of the soft pink tone,” says Holly Board of BoardGrove Architects.

“The renovation was purely an interior reconfiguration. The apartment was a very average, cheaply fitted out space with plastic timber look alike floors, lower ceilings and laminate kitchen joinery. It lacked any personality and consisted of a very standard layout,” says Holly.

BoardGrove made the space much more user-friendly and increased the penetration of natural light too. “The clients also needed a new kitchen but didn’t want a stereotypical wall of kitchen joinery cupboards and appliances to dominate the living space,” says Holly, who set about meeting the request with originality.

The two arches conceal a fridge and stove

“We created a more ambiguous cooking area that appeared as a collection of sculptural art-like forms that added character to the living space, with the functional cooking equipment concealed within each element,” says Holly. The unusual design features two arches – an arched metal door that conceals the fridge and an arched stove reveal. These details work to offset the industrial feel of the concrete that also features heavily in the space.

For sale: New Melbourne apartments a contrast of light & dark

Located just four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD in the hipster hub of Brunswick, Neometro’s new development ‘Jewell Station’ (pitched as a new urban village) has just unveiled its interiors and they are rather divine. Designed by Melbourne-based practice Clare Cousins Architects, the interiors feature beautiful contrasts of light and dark – think natural oak timber floors and wardrobe doors, wool carpets in the bedrooms, soft grey feature walls and dark coloured kitchens.

“All Jewell Station apartments will have a sense of connection, this is something Neometro does extremely well by maximising the natural ventilation and light. They enhance spatial quality, while enriching the spaces’ liveability. We designed the interiors to reflect that, helping to maximise that feeling of connectivity,” says director Clare Cousins who also focussed heavily on balancing space with storage — a common dilemma with inner-city living.

“Predominantly we design residential homes, so for us this was about drawing on that experience and allowing it to influence our design on a smaller scale. Beautifully designed apartments should deliver the highest standard of living, without compromise. The interior features highly durable, hardwearing materials and a timeless design that will settle into its surrounding and age gracefully,” says Clare.

Jewell Station also features a private roof-top terrace, foyer, barbecue areas, alfresco dining alcoves, a shared kitchen garden and dedicated screened meditation and yoga deck – all open to the building’s occupants. “The well-appointed rooftop area helps build a sense of community within the building,” says Clare. The development also boasts public bike storage, bike paths, outdoor performance spaces, retail spaces and food and beverage offerings.

With 78 dwellings in total, the development includes 13 one-bedroom apartments (priced from $395,000) and 65 two-bedroom apartments (priced from $595,000) and they are sure to be snapped up.

Buyers purchase multiple apartments to create one large home

Initial purchase data from the Melbourne multi-residential project Alexa, has revealed an interesting new trend. With extra living space in mind, buyers are purchasing multiple apartments in the one development with the intention of creating one larger dwelling.

ACP008 V01A AThe Alexa exterior

“We don’t believe in providing ‘one-size-fits-all’ apartments. By providing a range of types in Alexa, we’ve allowed buyers to determine whether it’s a one, two or three bedroom that they’re after,” says Steven Langeveld, development director at Accord Property Group.

ACP008 V06A AExpansive outdoor spaces

With one, two and three bedroom-plus-study apartments up for grabs and amenities such as multiple storage spaces, car parking and outdoor spaces, this development is a great example of thoughtful urban design.

ACP008 V05A AWe are swooning over those rose gold bathroom fixtures!

We’re particularly impressed by the fact that all ground floor apartments come with their own private outdoor terrace area of up to 75.3 square metres – a pretty generous size for inner-city living and ideal for pet owners.

Expansive living spaces prove apartment living needn’t be claustrophobic

We also love the imaginative exterior of the building – its organic lines and dark bronze paneling in particular. “The design was actually the reason the council granted two additional storeys to be built on top of the five storeys traditionally approved for this area,” says Steven of the building that was designed by Melbourne architectural practice ClarkHopkinsClarke.

6 storage tips for apartment living, as learnt from The Block

Apartment living is only continuing to grow in popularity, with people appreciating the benefits of being close to the city at a more affordable price. But in some inner city locations, apartments can be as small as 44 square metres, so how can you maximise the little amount of room an apartment offers?

From smart storage to flexible furniture and hidden cupboards, there are several space maximising initiatives that the city’s top real estate agents have been noticing. A prime example is the octagonal-shaped apartments on The Block, where several tricks of the trade are being used to make the most of every corner.

Below hockingstuart’s Mark Konishi — sales agent for The Block‘s Kingi and Caro — shares the top six storage initiatives he is seeing in inner-city apartments.

Hidden TV’s: In the city’s most luxurious apartments, buyers no longer want a TV to be the livings room’s focal point. A sliding panel can hide any eye-sore and is the perfect blank canvas for art.

caro kingi 2

Mirrored-cupboards: Mirrored-cupboards are a well-loved feature combining storage and functionality and they don’t take up any additional space.

Corner desks: Tiny corners are hard to utilise. A plant might look great but it isn’t functional – adding a small desk with some shelves instantly creates a purposeful space.

Window sills: Once they were dust collectors, but now window sills are being recognised as an additional storage space.

Sliding doors: A traditional door frame requires plenty of floor space and can often cause congestion issues in small apartments. Sliding doors can maximise space and also act as an eye-catching feature.

Functional bed heads: There’s no doubt bedside tables are useful, however they do tend to collect redundant odds and ends. Bed heads that have inbuilt shelving ensure only the essential items are stored in the bedroom.

Real homes: art collectors’ contemporary Sydney apartment

Having not seen a lick of paint since the 1960s, the dated apartment in Sydney’s Neutral Bay was cold and uninviting. That was until Daniele Mantovani and Marj Silva of boutique interior design firm, Décor Project, stepped in.

Decorproject-240415-023

“Our brief was to create an easy and comfortable space with plenty of display areas to show off our clients’ beautiful collection of indigenous artefacts,” explains Marj. “So we decided to keep the entire scheme very neutral to be the backdrop for all the art.”

Decorproject-240415-019

While they let the beautiful objets d’art do the talking, they did add some drama in the living room, installing a custom wall unit and display cabinet. “The living room wall unit was our focal point for the space,” says Marj. “In this instance we had to push the clients outside their comfort zone but having their trust paid off with great results. This became everyone’s favourite feature in the home. Its simplicity, sleekness and scale is a great backdrop for all the colourful objects.”

Decorproject-240415-027

[contextly_sidebar id=”cbInIFJQyFsBrKPutC3qrTLMofke6mNK”]Undertaking a cosmetic but expansive renovation, they replaced all the finishes and fittings including the flooring, wall colour, appliances and furniture and started afresh in the kitchen and bathroom. “The original kitchen was very dated and its layout wasn’t ideal,” explains Marj. “Despite being a small space it had to be functional. We decided on matte cabinet finishes for ease of cleaning and design longevity. And the marble was the starting point for the design, setting an elegant tone to the entire kitchen. Now we can say we’re utilising the space to its full potential.”

Decorproject-240415-012

Another key request from the clients was to maximise storage solutions, and as fellow apartment livers will know, there is no such thing as too much storage! “We looked into every nook and cranny to ensure no space was going unaccounted for,” says Marj. “We then added a storage unit under the stairs to house extra books and their printer.”

Home to a couple and their teenage daughter, the apartment that was once far from their dream home, now features contemporary and subdued joinery and finishes that are the perfect background to an extensive collection of global treasures.

Apartment life gets easier with King Living’s Metro range

When furnishing an apartment or inner city dwelling, it is critical to use functional furniture that can maximise space. However that being said, you don’t want to sacrifice style or comfort.

The new Metro range from King Living, is a clever furniture solution that is equally practical and luxurious. Two designs ideal for small spaces, the Jasper Metro and Delta Metro each provide a multi-functional sofa that makes no compromises.

Delta
Delta

The new Delta Metro is a great option, especially if extra storage is what you need. A compact and practical design, it enhances contemporary living by increasing storage, helping to keep smaller rooms neat and tidy. Available in a selection of configurations, which can be easily rearranged, Delta Metro can also include Smart Pockets, charging swivel tables and LED lamps — an alternative to having coffee tables and freestanding lamps stealing floor space. And for apartments without a guest room, Delta Metro easily converts to an overnight bed.

Jasper

The Jasper Metro, a compact version of the award-winning King Living Jasper, can be reconfigured to suit any room size thanks to its clever modular design. Timber shelf arms in Congo, Walnut and Wenge are available in single or double height for stylish trimming and unique storage. And if guests decide to stay – optional brackets enable Jasper Metro to turn into a bed.

Both designs in the Metro range can be customised to suit the interior styling of any home, with a choice of premium fabrics and luxurious leathers. All sofas also have tailored removable covers for creating a whole new look.

The Block’s Carlene and Michael’s beautifully styled apartment

Since Carlene and Michael Duffy’s departure from The Block and Reno Rumble, the couple have been busy with their latest venture, Cedar & Suede. Providing both face-to-face and e-design services, they pride themselves on creating interiors that not only look good, but actually work!

Carlene and Michael Duffy
Carlene and Michael Duffy

Their most recent project was the furnishing of a display apartment for Boheme, a multi-story residential development by Robina Group. With a brief that was classy, contemporary and cool, with a monochrome colour palette; the couple were determined to step away from the generic display home look.

Boheme 5

“The design process was a bit tricky because I had to start ordering furniture before the apartment was even finished,” explains Carlene. “Because we were keeping to a muted colour palette I wanted to introduce plenty of texture to keep the space interesting. For example we used a beautiful soft, tan leather sofa; a pure wool rug; tufted, velvet bedheads; and pops of metallic to add some necessary sass and sophistication!” Other smart decisions included using slimline and low-lying furniture to open up the space and striking artworks and contemporary lamps to add character.

IMG_1183

When it comes to creating this look in your own home, Carlene’s tips are simple: “Look for tactile, high-quality items that show longevity as a trend. Although it is okay to mix metals, I committed to brass in Boheme for my pop of metallic.”

Boheme 6

With the couple focused on expanding their business in the coming months, they are also keen to put all their reality TV renovating experience to good use. “We are concentrating on growing Cedar & Suede and are in discussions for some brand collaborations. Also at some point in the very near future we plan to renovate our own home, which has been put on hold for too long. I’m looking forward to living in a finished home, whenever that may be!”

Rent My Style: Laura Koomen’s balcony makeover

Here at Interiors Addict, we just don’t buy into the idea that rental homes have to look bland or lacking in style and personality. Rent My Style is dedicated to showcasing the best of our readers’ rental home decorating efforts.

Today, we’re sharing Laura Koomen’s cute balcony makeover in Melbourne. Her one-bedroom apartment has been home for three years. “One of the best things I did was put a floating wooden base covered in AstroTurf down on my balcony,” she explained. “The floating base was important as it is one of those old concrete tub style balconies that fill with puddles when it rains! Also, I had a wooden bar built that sits atop the balcony edge.

IMG_2404

“It’s been transformed from concrete box to my little oasis! The rest of my apartment is lovely too and I think the key for me has been about getting the right size furniture for the right space, not overcrowding and keeping a consistency to every room.”

IMG_2403

We love how Laura’s inexpensive additions have made all the difference, and everything can be easily removed when she moves out (although we think her landlord should pay her to keep them!).

Dan and Dani sell first property since The Block

Two-time Blockheads Dan Reilly and Dani Wales know a lot when it comes to renovating and selling homes. But this time there are no TV cameras and they’re selling their very own apartment.

Dan and Dani in Apartment

Situated in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, it is the first property they have renovated since being on 2012’s The Block and 2013’s The Block All Stars.

The pair purchased the one-bed apartment just before they had their TV debut, which saw them juggle renovating The Block house and moving in. “It was such a hectic week as we were working on the master bedroom and en suite on The Block whilst trying to move into our apartment at the same time,” explained Dan.

Iconic St Kilda apartment by David Hicks proves size isn’t everything

This apartment, by David Hicks, is in the iconic Banff Building on St Kilda’s famous Fitzroy Street. It was once used as an army barracks by the Americans during World War 2.

“The owners came to us as they liked what we do and had been following our work. They are a professional couple who had downsized from a larger home nearby to allow freedom to travel while providing a bolt hole in their home town,” says David. “The apartment has been the home of many notable St Kilda icons due to its prime position overlooking Albert Park towards the city skyline.”

It’s not huge, as 85 sqm, with two bedrooms, one with ensuite, a powder room, study, separate dining, living and kitchen. “Although we are known for our many high end large scale luxury apartments and residential building designs, the clients could see that our aesthetic of modern luxury could be related to a smaller space. They had an understanding of how we combine architecture with decoration and our dedication to detail and material selection. We have a very strong focus on achieving quality design that is both intelligent in its layering and comfortable.”

Minor structural works were undertaken with one large bathroom divided in two to create an ensuite for the master bedroom and the powder room, complete with shower, that can be used with the second bedroom.

I’m a little bit in love with this Lisbon apartment

I had the pleasure of interviewing the Portugese interior designer behind this beautiful apartment for the latest issue of Adore Home magazine and I just want to move right in. At first glance it looks like there’s crazy colour and pattern everywhere but on closer inspection it is all very cleverly put together so nothing is overdone.

Room talk: masculine, monochrome Port Melbourne apartment

This project by designer Aaron Wong of Alexander Pollock, was for a young working professional who recently bought his first home in Port Melbourne. He was after a masculine and monochrome palette to suit his no fuss lifestyle.

“A very modern concept was chosen,” says Aaron. “My favourite part of the space was the installation of tinted mirrors to reflect the three tubular pendant lights for a visual effect.”
