The Baobab Collective: authentic and soulful African textiles

The Baobab Collective brings soulful African style to Australia with a curated collection of throws and blankets. Made in South Africa, the new range is sustainably sourced and ethically crafted.

“Having grown up in South Africa, we always had beautiful throws at home – we wanted to introduce Australians to these incredible textiles that are filled with stories and cultural importance,” said Greg van Zyl, founder of The Baobab Collective.

“Now based in Australia’s Southern Highlands – we know what it’s like to need cosy layers. The Baobab Collective introduces the best pieces for adding texture and warmth to a home, and are made by the oldest and most revered blanket manufacturer in South Africa.”

One of their range, the Basotho blankets, are a distinctive woollen blanket worn by the Sotho people of Africa, and are steeped in history. Originally gifted in the late 19th century to the then ruler King Moshoeshoe by an English man known only as “Mr Howell”, these blankets quickly gained popularity, replacing the traditional animal skin cloaks.

Throws start from $169.

How to: style a timeless kids’ bedroom they’ll still love

Deciding how to decorate your little darling’s bedroom is almost as difficult as writing a birth plan and pretending you’ll stick to it. With so many novelty items and lines of licensed merchandise on the market, it’s easy to become a nervous wreck at the mere thought of decking out a nursery or rumpus room.

Well, take a deep breath and start taking notes while you’re at it because Julie Ramsay, founder of linen brand Bedtonic, has shared her top styling tips to create soothing spaces that are sure to whisk your wee ones off to lullaby land.

First of all, don’t follow fashion. Trends are not your friends in this department.

“Choose classic, gender-neutral colour schemes and a few high quality furnishings that will stand the test of time. It will save you money and headaches in the future, trust me,” Julie says.

“As I’m sure you know, today’s obsession with Dora the Explorer is likely to be replaced with Peppa Pig tomorrow – and your closets will soon overflow with all the matching merchandise you spent big on. By all means, buy your children the toys and accessories they love, but make sure they’re not permanent fixtures that are problematic or expensive to update.”

According to Julie, linen is proving popular with parents who want bedding that will feel good against their children’s skin, survive myriad washing machine cycles and co-ordinate perfectly with any colour scheme. “Linen is quite magical in that it keeps kids warm in winter and cool in summer,” she says. “It also envelopes your body, making your littles feel safe and secure. It’s a fabulous fabric to tuck tiny tikes into each night.”

Stacks of European pillows with ruffled pillowslips work well whether they’re propped up on a bed or used as scatter cushions during play dates. Linen’s durability means it will withstand all the wear and tear that any wee beastie can throw at it, making it a sound investment. It’s also stain resistant and quick to line dry, which is a godsend for those who are in the throes of toilet training.

Since linen lasts for years, consider pairing vintage sheets with new purchases to create eclectic looks. Your fitted and top sheets don’t have to match. In fact, beds can look even more inviting when covered in complementary colour combinations.

People who prefer to sleep straight under their doona covers without top sheets can still get plenty of use out of their spare flat sheets. Using them as table cloths, customising them into curtains (with a few strategically placed holes and some curtain rings) or cleverly draping them to create tents and tepees are all wonderful ways to put this versatile fabric to good use.

“Children love using sheets to create secret hideaways within the safety of their own rooms,” Julie says. “Linen also makes a great canvas. If you really want to be a cool parent, let your child personalise their space by giving them a sheet to paint or decorate with stickers, pictures, pompoms, buttons, bunting and bling of their choosing.”

Julie made a conscious effort to let her daughter, Mollie, explore her creative freedom in her own bedroom. “It’s important not to be too precious about your child’s room. Most of the furniture in Mollie’s bedroom has come from secondhand shops and verge pick-ups, but we’ve resurfaced it and let Mollie paint or repurpose it in ways that inspire her,” Julie says. “It was our priority to give our child an imaginative space that was uniquely hers and functional as well as good-looking.”

These days, layering multiple shades of her mum’s linen on the bed is one of Mollie’s favourite decorating techniques. Bedtonic’s children’s collection currently includes winter white and white and navy ticking stripe sheets. This summer, their kids’ collection will extend to reversible duvets with a move into pure linen for babies, including sheet sets, swaddle wraps and bespoke linen blankets with contrasting stitching for a touch of whimsy.

“The blanket looks gorgeous when combined with either of the children’s sheet sets,” Julie says. “It can also double as a picnic blanket, making it perfect for hosting teddy bear picnics and tea parties.”

Hunting For George on surviving the first 5 years in business

Last month, Hunting For George celebrated their fifth birthday, no mean feat for a small business that started in co-owner Jo Harris’ spare bedroom!

Jo and Lucy
Jo and Lucy

An online homewares business specialising in everything from pure cotton bed linen to handmade clocks, Hunting For George entered the eCommerce market in a time very different from today. “Five years ago, online retail was dominated primarily by larger companies,” explains Jo. “The challenge for us in the early days was working out how to be relevant next to the big players. This forced us to find our own point of difference, zero in on our key strengths and present our own voice in the industry.”

hunting for george 6

hunting for george 5

[contextly_sidebar id=”sRrcUGyFwQsWhHlA8QWsLXKh4LGw4w0o”]So present their own voice they did, harnessing Jo’s skills in management and her sister/co-owner Lucy Glade-Wright’s in graphic design. Initially selling brands they liked, they later started designing themselves, however all the products shared the same commonality: a realness, an energy and a quintessential Hunting For George feel. We wanted to transfer so much of our own personality and energy into the site that when people found us online they felt like they practically knew us,” says Lucy. “The shopping experience ultimately comes down to how we like to shop, the things we like to buy and the way we like to be treated. And it’s that realness that we have created that our customers have responded to the most.”

hunting for george 1

As a small business, in the early days, nobody knew who they were. As a result, they had to work a lot harder, so the support from one another was never more important. “Whilst we love what we do, running your own business is really hard,” explains Jo. “I think the reason why we are still here though and still relatively sane, is due to the support we give one another and the support we now receive from the team around us. There are always times that cause you to doubt yourself and doubt is a dangerous thing. When it creeps up on you, you’ve just got to tell it to get the fuck back and keep moving forward. Pardon my French!”

hunting for george 2

It’s that attitude that’s seen the sisters reach so many milestones, one of the biggest being the success of their debut bedding collection, that not only gave them an incredible amount of confidence as designers, but also as entrepreneurs. “That was overwhelming,” says Jo. “We had styles sell out within weeks and we found ourselves scrambling to arrange reprints. At the time, it was a huge gamble as we put everything on the line with that collection. Luckily though, it paid off!”

hunting for george 3

However, their latest highlight — which they’re still beaming over — was being nominated as a finalist for the ORIA Best Small Online Retailer 2015. “We are so proud of this achievement,” explains Lucy. “Our team is a small one and we all work so hard to make Hunting For George the best it can be. To receive that level of recognition from the industry at such an early stage is a huge hats off to our team and the terrific work they put in.”

hunting for george 7

While the sisters are proving small businesses can thrive in today’s homewares industry, there’s no doubt many others are struggling. So what’s their secret? Turns out they have three. “Firstly, we worked out at the beginning who we were and what made us different. Create, don’t imitate! Secondly, we have the right people on board and surround ourselves with people smarter than us. For example, we’ve hired a good bookkeeper! And thirdly, we always keep a healthy supply of wine at the ready!”

Hunting for George’s colourful but subtle cotton blankets

When anything is described as colourful I automatically get wary. The neutral and pastel loving cynic within imagines garish patterns and OTT designs, but fortunately that’s not always the case. Especially when it comes to Hunting for George’s just released “colourful” collection, which is as far from garish as you can get!

dKonZrvlt8O1CkwBoKCkxm7Eej4Mmm7gT4E0jEN6-B8,wUj-oFFHmATs-DbzrOS4HW9jFJgVDgWUNbhN9taE59A,V9Mx3YV5ZEkO1ZgsC0ys1yCLA8GspduTWV7K4p_DDk4

Their new Outsiders blanket collection proves colour can well and truly be the hero. With simple, block prints the range features bright emerald greens, rich cornflower blues and neon pinks. Designed to complement their pure cotton sateen bed linen, the range of 100% cotton blankets are designed for multi use — perfect as a single bed quilt, queen bed throw or couch snuggler.

“It became pretty obvious when designing this range that the hero was going to be colour,” says Lucy Glade-Wright, Hunting for George’s co-founder. “So we developed a subtle design layout to support this. Our structured grids add a beautiful dynamic to each blanket whilst also remaining uncomplicated and peaceful – everything that a home should be.”

With four prints: Louie, Benny, Faker and Chase, they are all full of character. Each have their own signature colour palette, Louie, a soft lemon citrus; Faker, a combination of apricot, purple and ivory; Benny, dreamy emerald-green and Chase, pop pink and blue.

“We tend to refine our colour choices when designing bed linen but for this blanket collection we really wanted to have fun and experiment with the colour palette,” explains Jo Harris, Hunting for George’s co-founder. “All these colours make us insanely happy and that’s the reaction we hope many people will have when they lay eyes on them.”

Kate & Kate’s most exciting and most adventurous range to date

Kate & Kate have come a long way since launching a small collection of cotton blankets in 2013. Now, sisters-in-law and best friends Kate Pascoe and Kate Pascoe Squires create two seasonal collections a year, and their Summer 15/16 range, The Great Escape, may just be our favourite yet.

LLGqRLGb5qeIdrHKbo6Nlx3PwBBOkXjo1ZzsUS2-ujY

Their self-proclaimed “most adventurous season to date,” features the cotton blankets, linen throws, bath sheets and hand towels we’ve all come to love. But there’s also some very exciting new additions, with a beautiful range of linen cushions, linen napkins and beach towels added to the repertoire. “Brand new this season is our collection of 100% linen, hand screen-printed cushions each of which come with custom feather inserts,” explains Kate Pascoe Squires. “We also have gorgeous linen napkins and beach towels in both adult and kid sizes — they’re my favourite, super lush and they look amazing. We have lots of colour and excitement this summer!”

With a definite nautical undertone, seen through references to maritime and signal flags, the ocean-loving duo were excited to take such direct inspiration this season. “Being inspired by the ocean means this season’s colour palette is incredibly soft and light, with a base of navy and soft greys. It was beautiful working on the softer side of the colour scale and really allowed us to get into that summer frame of mind.”

Forestry: creating throw rugs in The Netherlands, from New Zealand wool, for Aussies!

After selling her New Zealand-based infants label, Virginia Star Busmann was ready for her next adventure, and this time it was in the form of Forestry:  traditional-style wool throw rugs with a contemporary twist.

The Circle/Grid blanket in collaboration with Milo & Mitzy

“I started Forestry after I noticed a gap in the market for quality woolen plaids that were fresh and unique in design,” explains Virginia. “We use pure new wool and traditional methods to create blankets which easily bring a fresh look to any living or bedroom space.”

Forestry Collectie 2014 Katwijk aan Zee-050

A Kiwi, Virginia and her Dutch husband spent a ten-year stint in Auckland before deciding it was only fair to give his country, The Netherlands, a go. Yet while she may be many miles away from her hometown, Virginia is far from forgetting her roots, with all her wool being sourced directly from New Zealand.

Forestry Collectie 2014 Katwijk aan Zee-040

“We manufacture in a small mill in Lithuania,” says Virginia. “They source wool from New Zealand, which is made into yarn and traditionally woven on site. Much of the work is still done by hand, which means that the blankets may have slight variations in size. Of course, that’s part of their charm!”

A truly global operation, Virginia’s blankets are also available to us in Australia via her online store. “I sell a lot to Australia,” explains Virginia. “I guess there must be something Antipodean in the aesthetic that appeals!”

Forestry Collectie 2014 Katwijk aan Zee-008

With Forestry’s second range just launched this month, it has a clean fresh look thanks to the strong whiteness of the wool and the brilliantly contrasting colours. “This range is double-faced, designed to be viewed from both sides,” explains Virginia. “This means that the colours are less blended, they appear stronger, which creates a slightly different aesthetic.”

The blankets are all designed by Virginia, who adds: “Wool is an amazing natural resource. It’s non-polluting and biodegradable. It takes less energy to produce than manmade fibres. It’s flame-retardant, breathable, durable and elastic, and it stays warm even when wet. What’s not to love?”

The Circle/Grid was designed in collaboration with New Zealand blog Milo and Mitzy.

The throw blankets can be purchased from the Forestry website.

One lucky reader will win a blanket of their choice. To be in with a chance, tell us your top tip for getting cosy this winter, using the entry form below, and which throw design and colour you’d pick. Entries close at midnight next Thursday 17 July 2014. Good luck! Open to Australian residents only.

One-of-a-kind throws, made with love (and giant knitting needles), by Little Dandelion

Her throws are beautiful, SERIOUSLY chunky and texture-full works of art. “I love a bit of sensory feedback,” says extreme knitter Jacqui Fink of Little Dandelion. “Always have.” Made from the finest, locally sourced wool and linen, these mega throws and blankets weigh up to 15 kilos and are really something else. But it is the philosophy and story behind  Jacqui’s work that I’m even more taken with, and it’s something we could all learn from.
