Australian made sofas: Bespoke, fast and better for the local economy

The COVID-19 ripple effect continues to be felt across many industries and while it has been devastating in many ways, it’s not been without silver linings – especially when it comes to the Aussie sofa industry.

Faced with even longer than normal lead times for imported sofas, plus an increasing desire to order a custom design, many consumers are choosing to buy local ensuring they get exactly what they want and within a speedy timeframe too.

Contents ID
Sydney based Contents ID has found its customer base is increasingly searching for locally made products (due to faster availability than imported goods) and a desire to support Australian businesses. The bespoke factor is a huge pull too.

“Buying a locally made product gives you the benefit of ordering something custom as no two spaces are the same. There’s greater flexibility in regards to size, design, and upholstery options as well as a smaller lead time when compared to overseas imports,” says owner Andrew Algar.

The pandemic has also resulted in a lack of available shipping containers resulting in an international freight system that is often moving at glacial speed. “Having the manufacturing a short drive away means you have more control of the lead times with the local pieces and a further hand in the Australian economy too.”

Crafted
Established in 2015, for Sydney furniture company Crafted, the decision to offer locally made products comes from a desire to place the customer at the centre of the creative process.

“Our ethos is all about offering the best possible experience when co-creating furniture with us and we have found the only way to truly do that is to make our products locally. This gives our customers a significant place in the process of crafting their perfect lounge or bed, as well as allowing us to deliver our products much faster than imports and at a higher quality,” says owner Justin Burden.

The business currently has a product lead time of roughly eight weeks for a fully customised product, which compares to a 26-week wait for an import. “Of course, some people need a lounge right now and aren’t able to wait. For those customers we offer a limited stock range that can be ready in two to three weeks but doesn’t allow you to fully personalise your product as much,” Justin adds.

For Justin, there are many reasons for the appeal of locally made product. Not only do you get something that’s been crafted to your exact specifications (rather than a homogenous product), but the benefit to the community is many-fold. “Even before COVID, we were seeing a generation of customers questioning where things come from. Locally made is also better for the environment and keeps local manufacturing alive with unimaginable ripples of good that spread throughout your local community!”

Plush
While the sofa company Plush do stock overseas products (mainly items that are difficult to source here), its Australian made ‘Sofa Boutique’ range allows customers to choose from a huge range of unique designs, configurations and textiles including fabric and leather. With stores across Australia, Plush has noticed there is a huge demand for bespoke sofas – especially from interior designers and customers looking for something unique.

The COVID19 effect has been felt in the business though, with demand outstripping supply. “It’s been a great boost for the industry, but this increased demand, coupled with the COVID restrictions has caused some challenges for all suppliers, both locally and overseas, to keep pace,” says Plush products manager Nicole Absalom, who explains that while buying locally won’t necessarily impact the speed of delivery, it’s certainly great for the economy.

“Buying Australian made, you are helping local businesses and supporting the Australian economy and jobs market which is a great thing. Plush directly employs over 200 staff across Australia and many more indirectly, like the Sofa Boutique team that manufacture in Sydney.”

Incy Interiors celebrates 10 years with brand new range of children’s furniture

When Incy Interiors launched a decade ago, the Australian children’s furniture scene was a rather bland and predictable one. Debuting with a range of retro style iron beds and cots, in a delectable range of on-trend colours, the Incy Interiors range soon became a favourite of design-conscious parents across the country – and it’s still going strong after ten years in business.

Incy Interiors’ iconic rose gold ‘Ellie’ cot

“I definitely underestimated the gap in the market and that first year was insane,” says the brand’s founder Kristy Withers who decided to launch the brand after shopping for a ‘big boy bed’ for her two-year-old son Oscar and being uninspired by the options.

Working in corporate marketing at eBay at the time, and travelling to the US and Europe constantly, Kristy was able to check out all of the amazing children’s furniture products that weren’t available in Australia. “After lots of talking about it, trying to get things made and researching, my husband finally said to me one day ‘for god sake just do it!'” says Kristy.

Kristy Withers
Incy Interiors’ founder Kristy Withers

That first year of business was so successful that even Kristy’s daughter was waiting in line for one of the brand’s covetable cots. “The year we launched I also had my daughter Polly, and she didn’t have a cot until she was at least six months old because it kept selling out, so I had to keep bumping her to the next shipment!” says Kristy.

The stylish range has since expanded to encompass around 70 products and is available across the globe with distributors in the US and UK and stockists in New Zealand, the UAE, Hong Kong and Singapore.

And Kristy manages all of this from her base in Orange, where she resides with her husband and two children on 100 acres of land. “We lead a really simple, easy life in such a beautiful part of the world.  Most of my team are based in Sydney so I have a great excuse to get back to the city and get my fix and catch up with my friends. I couldn’t imagine life any other way,” says Kristy.

As for the brand’s most popular product, it’s no surprise to hear that it’s the rose gold cot. “I don’t think there would have been Incy without our rose gold products. I have lost count of how many beds and cots we have sold. They are definitely our signature piece that are the perfect blend of classic but cool!” says Kristy.

And to celebrate Incy’s tenth birthday, the brand has a new range on the horizon too – slated to launch next month and pictured here. Central to the brand’s ethos, Incy believes that kids’ rooms are sacred spaces in which children can showcase their creativity and thus have launched a fully customisable range that speaks to this. With five velvet shades and two gorgeous, aged leathers, the range represents over 1000 exciting design possibilities.

“We are so excited about the massive new collection and we also have a new collaboration that I am really excited about, that has been in the works for two years. We have something really exciting happening every month of this year so strap yourselves in for some amazingness from Incy as we hit our second decade!”

Brosa see 180% increase in furniture sales since Covid

There’s no denying that COVID-19 has pulled our focus onto our homes and furniture retailer BROSA is living proof, with a massive spike in sales and social media followers since the pandemic. More than ever, people are concentrating on interior design, as the increased time indoors makes us reevaluate our living spaces, how they function and make us feel.

BROSA have seen sales grow by more than 180% since March, with contemporary designs like their Ada Swivel Chair being particularly popular. Even the brand’s Instagram followers have jumped 60% since the Australia-wide lockdown.

During this period, the way in which people shop has also fundamentally changed. BROSA firmly believe that the future is led by a “digital-first omni-channel strategy”. Originally existing solely as an online retailer, BROSA opened a Melbourne studio last year, and they opened their first walk-in showroom in Sydney last week.

“We’re focused on continuing our mission to change the furniture industry for the better, to grow our team with the very best talent, and to transform traditional furniture shopping,” says CEO and co-founder Ivan Lim.

The new Rosebery studio

This integration of the digital and the physical caters to the unique nature of each customer; some will turn online for inspiration, research, and to purchase, while others love to talk to a stylist in person – to see, touch and feel the products before transitioning to the digital sphere.

The new ‘Studio+’ in Sydney’s Rosebery, like its Melbourne counterpart, isn’t just another shop. While it showcases a wide range of practical design-led furniture, allowing customers to touch and sit on it, it’s complemented in-store by some of the innovations the digital brand is known for, including augmented reality. QR codes allow you to shop unassisted by scanning the code, and even being able to purchase on the spot.

Stylists are on hand to help you if you’d like. But if you’d rather just scan your own QR code, that’s cool too!

Visitors are invited to bring their moodboards and colour swatches, or simply come to be inspired. But if you can’t, or don’t want to, make it in, BROSA’s online services include virtual tours of the Sydney and Melbourne studios and, for a more personalised experience, virtual consults with a BROSA stylist. You can book online for a free 45-minute appointment that consists of working with you on your floorplans, ideal product selection, and inspiration.

Customers can also view products in 360 degrees and “view at home” through augmented reality – like a virtual test drive, that lets you see the pieces you’ve selected in a real-life context.

“Due to the shifting nature of the furniture industry, and the recently accentuated focus on crafting a beautiful and intentional living space, this digital-physical fusion is ideal for those who desire a fully immersive retail experience.”

Freedom rebrands to focus on Australian design

Of the many things that COVID-19 has taught us, the value of locally designed and made product would have to be right up there. With international supply issues a serious issue, and local jobs in the spotlight, it makes sense that businesses are responding. And in interesting news for Aussie homemakers, Freedom is the latest to do so. With a fresh new logo and head of design, things are certainly changing for the business that has been trading in Australia since 1981.

Freedom Jervis sofa

“Much of the furniture sold in Australia is not designed here, and consequently doesn’t reflect the way we live,” says Freedom CEO Blaine Callard of the inspiration behind the decision to put Australian design at the forefront of the brand’s new transformation. Key to the new range will be a focus on our unique way of life (we use spaces very differently to other parts of the world) and penchant for natural materials.

Freedom lighting

“Freedom’s success has always been built on design, quality and how Australians live. Now we’re updating the brand with a fresher, bolder and more youthful approach. We want to inspire Australians with a contemporary, stylish, affordable range that complements Australian homes, proving that beautiful surroundings don’t have to be expensive. That’s democratisation of design,” says Blaine.

Freedom planters

Heading up the transformation, which has been 12 months in the making, is designer Kate Hopwood who is best known for her role at Kmart where she oversaw the transformation of its homewares offering. And in great news for consumers, over 75 percent of Freedom’s product range will be brand new by Autumn Winter 2021.

Freedom

“I’m so thrilled to be designing for such an iconic Australian brand. For years, Freedom has been renowned for its unique Australian design aesthetic. Our transformation is going back to our roots; to designing and curating beautiful, great quality, affordable products for Australians’ relaxed and contemporary way life,” says Kate.

Freedom dinnerware

Known for being a reliable sofa source, the rebrand will result in a range of Australian designed and made sofas hitting shop floors as well as a locally made dining range using Australian timbers. The new homewares line-up will be locally designed but sourced both locally and overseas.

Freedom chair

The new collection will begin hitting stores this month, with fresh product dropping monthly.

Trend alert! Our favourite scalloped finds

Given our collective obsession with arches and circles, the scallop trend is one we should have seen coming. The gently rounded shape is a rather soft, whimsical silhouette that owes more than a passing nod to Art Deco, and we are loving it. From pots to wall decals, bookends and statement chairs, suddenly there’s not a straight line in sight.

Luxo Living Chantal Scallop Velvet Chair: Available in seven covetable colours (including blush, teal and black), this chair brings to mind a pretty shell and it’s finished with flared gold painted metal legs. $299.

Art Deco style: Our top furniture & homeware picks

With the latest season of The Block having just kicked off, and its focus being squarely on period design, suddenly everyone is talking heritage details again. One of our favourite periods, Art Deco reached the height of popularity in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, and is characterised by rich colour, bold geometry and decadent detail work. What’s not to love? Here’s our pick of some gorgeous pieces to help you get the look.

Fenton & Fenton Bone Inlay Deco sideboard and bedside, Orleans: Bone inlay furniture pieces were originally handcrafted for the royal palaces of Rajasthan, India. Fit for royalty, we love the Deco inspired clean lines and geometric pattern of these two pieces. Bedside, $1,300 and sideboard, $3,900.

Designer Rugs ‘Delaunay’ rug by Greg Natale: “French Art Deco is definitely more aligned with modernism. It’s cleaner than the American version which is heavier and a lot more decorative,” says Greg Natale of the inspiration behind this delightful round rug. $4050.

Designer Rugs Greg Natale Delaunay rug

Luxe Living Chantal Scallop velvet accent chair in rose pink: Available in forest green and navy too, this lovely chair features on-trend scallop detailing and luxe velvet upholstery. $285.

The Block Shop Fan mirror: I’m not sure there’s an object that says ‘Art Deco’ more than this one. It’s a bona fide classic. From $325 (70cm).

West Elm Embellished Deco Shapes pillow covers: Combining eye-catching geometric motifs with beaded accents and hand-embroidered metallic details, these cushions offer a contemporary take on Art Deco. $39.95.

Life Interiors Ipanema bedside table in black: Constructed from solid timber and powder coated metal, it’s the curved corners and linear details that give this gorgeous bedside that extra something. $595.

Catherine Martin ‘Metropolis’ wallpaper (in marcasite) by Mokum: One of Aussie design doyenne Catherine Martin’s earliest designs, this wallpaper is a glorious celebration of the era.

Montauk Lighting Co Adele wall sconce by Suzanne Kasler: Like a piece of glamorous art for the wall, this light comes in in polished nickel and antique brass iterations. $1309.

Expert Tips

Improve your home with these 5 budget-friendly tips

With people isolated in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has undoubtably been an increased awareness and desire to improve how our home space looks and feels. Bearing in mind budget constraints and accessibility, Katrina Garrett and Millie Alison, co-founders of The Design Paddock, have compiled five attainable and cost-effective ways to revamp, uplift and refresh your interiors!

The Design Paddock’s Katrina Garrett and Millie Alison, Sheri McMahon Photography
  1. The power of paint

One of the most effortless ways to reinvigorate and transform a space is a fresh coat
of paint. A spot that’s often overlooked is the hallway or the entry to the home. These areas are important as they connect to the spaces you live in and can set the initial impression of the home. Over the years, walls, doors and trims can look battered and more commonly adopt marks or cracks. A fresh coat of paint can make the biggest difference here. We recommend a gloss trim paint to contrast against a matt or low sheen wall paint. You’ll be surprised with the impact it can make.

This doesn’t only apply to the interior. Consider redesigning or repainting your front
door or even the garden pots in your entry for a powerful change. This can instantly
achieve a more inviting entry!

2. Rearrange the furniture

It’s quite common to find that people become too comfortable in their home to realise that a slight rearrangement could transform a place and in turn, may provide a better layout. Many people tend to use the TV as the centrepiece of the living room, however, this should not be the case. Living rooms should be centred around conversation and comfort.

Between the warmer and cooler months, the perfect opportunity emerges to rearrange your home spaces. Fireplaces are the perfect centrepiece to arrange your furniture around in winter where the television becomes less of a focal point! Also consider moving your armchair beside a window to create a reading corner or a spot to wind down and enjoy some sun.

3. Switch up your lighting

Lighting plays a big part in determining the atmosphere and ambience within a room.
Considering subtle changes in the home can have a dramatic impact on the way a
space feels. Warm light globes around the home are a must in our books! Furthermore, consider where your lighting is focused and adjust it. You may like to highlight an artwork or incorporate a new feature pendant above your dining table.

It is important to note that lighting should be both beautiful and functional; thus, a directional light in a hallway is a great way to not only light up an artwork but will reflect onto the wall and light up the space beautifully. When considering your feature pendant, one should not only love it but include a suitable globe for illuminating the table appropriately when gathering around it in the evenings.

Alternating lighting throughout the house is another way to make spaces feel cosy.
Incorporate varying scales and heights in your lighting such as table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, dimmable ceiling lights and pendants in soft textures to create
interest and an overall lovely ambiance.

4. Reprioritise and declutter

With the extra time people are spending at home recently, there is no better time to take charge and rid your home of clutter! Explore new ways to store and conceal possessions in cabinets or boxes and if there isn’t space and you no longer need items, let go. Interiors should feel full but not cluttered. Less is more!

Organising the bookshelves can bring life to a forgotten area. It’s always good to
start with larger items such as bowls, jugs or artwork — this will help achieve the right
scale and balance. Books are a beautiful inclusion to an interior. Try stacking books
in varying directions on the shelf to add interest. Most importantly, the bookshelves
are a reflection of your life and style. Add your treasured keepsakes on top of piled
books – different heights can help balance your shelf styling.

5. Reinvigorate with soft furnishings

Soft furnishings present an opportunity to incorporate colour, texture or
pattern to a space without the intensive labour! You can soften your bedroom with a rug beneath the end of your bed, introducing a bedhead, re-covering a chair or new throw cushions.

Deciding on your favourite fabric can often be difficult, particularly if you can’t afford your favourite. Be clever with the way you use your fabric. A cost-effective way of achieving a similar result may be to upholster the back of your cushions or bedhead with an affordable plain fabric. You can use some beautiful tea towels or fabric cuttings to frame for some affordable art!

Brosa: Stylish on-trend furniture at affordable prices

Sponsored by Brosa

Since launching six years ago, with a primarily Scandi-inspired aesthetic, Australian furniture company Brosa (it means ‘smile’ in Icelandic), has expanded its range to include mid-century, Hamptons, traditional, modern and coastal inspired pieces. While offering a great online furniture buying experience, it’s also a one-stop shop for stylish looks that won’t break the bank.

Brosa
Brosa’s ‘Slim chest of drawers’ (right) is one of its most popular designs

Occupying that mid-tier space, between IKEA and more high-end furniture brands, Brosa keeps costs down by owning its supply chain and doing most of its business online. While traditional furniture retailers have an array of middlemen standing between the production process and the customer, Brosa has streamlined the process, allowing it to deliver very accessible prices straight to you.

Brosa
The gorgeous ‘Greta’ sideboard (right) is a customer favourite

Promising a better way to buy furniture, Brosa has built a business around delivering a seamless browsing and buying experience, while providing practical advice throughout the purchasing journey. Customers can search by room or style (categories include mid-century, traditional, modern boho and Hamptons) and can order up to five free fabric samples. And to make purchasing even easier, the company has a dedicated interior design team that offers in-depth styling consultations, mood boards, floor plans and 3D visualisations.

The Brosa 'Christoph' sofa range
Brosa’s popular ‘Christoph’ sofa range

And while Brosa originally launched as an e-commerce brand, it has since opened two showrooms (in Sydney and Melbourne) in response to customer demand. But, rather than acting as traditional retail spaces, they’re staffed by qualified interior designers and stylists, offering all the advice above, in-person. The brand opened the showrooms, because many of its customers wanted to touch and feel its products. It has plans to open more showrooms soon.

Brosa also offers ‘white glove’ delivery with any purchase. With this service, the delivery team will move your item to the room of your choice, assemble the item, and take its packaging away for recycling. As furniture delivery goes, does it get much better than that?

To celebrate Brosa, we’re giving away two of its best-selling pieces; the Mia Coffee Table With Shelf, $379 and Mia Nest of Tables, $329.

Timber shelves: A stylish new Australian made brand

It’s no secret that we’re massive fans of a stylish shelfie around here which is why the launch of PLANK wall-hung shelving has caught our eye. The creation of Melbourne visual merchandiser Anita Thorley, the Scandi-inspired, solid Tasmanian oak wall hung shelves are beautiful for their chic simplicity.

“Having worked on shelves for a lot of my merchandising life, I knew that not much existed between Bunnings industrial shelves and Poliform divine bespoke shelves,” says Anita who has had a long visual merchandising career working for large companies such as Sportsgirl, The Body Shop, The Swatch Group and Tiffany.

PLANK
The PLANK shelving system

Anita always had a desire to launch her own product, and she first started toying with the shelving idea after assisting a retailer with the opening and merchandising of a furniture store in Melbourne. Faced with a dearth of shelving options, Anita and her builder husband made floating shelves for the opening and received a host of enquiries about them.

“They looked beautiful in the clean, stark space and particularly when merchandised with stunning products. Every week people asked if the shelving was for sale,” says Anita.

PLANK

Before long, Anita started playing around with shelving designs and sizes, eventually settling on a simple design with smooth curved corners, that also happens to perfectly complement the natural timber trend. “The timber has such gorgeous colours in its natural grain. It’s a beautiful colour that suits all spaces,” says Anita of the solid Tasmanian oak that is finished with a light Scandinavian inspired lacquer.

PLANK

Handmade in Melbourne and available in two sizes, 1.12metres long and 2.25 metres long, the former can hold up to 20kg while the latter can withstand 30kg. The shelves are ideal for the small spaces as they don’t take up any room on the floor; they can also be passed down within families and moved from house to house too. “Given they are solid timber, they are ‘forever furniture’ and won’t attribute to landfill either!”

Anita Thorley

The PLANK range is available online or at The Modern Furniture store which has locations in Brisbane, Melbourne and Bowral.

Plywood furniture: Plyroom is still going strong

It’s been a while since we caught up with the team at Plyroom and we thought it was about time given the business is now six years old, and still going strong. The opposite of disposable, the Melbourne brand’s sustainably sourced ply furniture and accessories range is designed to grow with its customers, rather than be constantly replaced.

The Shibui shelving system

“Our focus has been about building a business that stands for creating an intentional home, slowing down and creating a calmer existence, especially whilst things continue to speed up around us. We are very conscious of the proliferation of ‘stuff’, and have continued to slowly grow our product range, rather than constantly bringing out new ranges,” says Plyroom founder Elise Heslop who continues to offer the most popular pieces from the brand’s inception, including the Castello bunk bed and the Ava (which triples as a cot, junior bed and desk all in one).

The 'Peggy.' Image: Meghan Plowman
The ‘Peggy.’ Image: Meghan Plowman

While the brand’s original offering is still made in Italy, the newest pieces are made locally in Melbourne. “We continue to work with amazing craftspeople in Italy, but it’s also been very rewarding working with local partners to bring new pieces to our collection,” says Elise who has found many customers have been looking for pieces to complement items that they bought from the original line-up.

Scrivette desk
The ‘Scrivette’ desk and ‘Dedo’ wooden storage box

Some of the latest highlights include the beautifully minimalist Scrivette Desk which combines a Baltic birch top with Tasmanian oak legs and the gorgeous Flor planter is another relatively new piece too. Handmade in Italy, from curved beech wood, it’s got hidden castors and a raised base that enable you to reposition your indoor plants without lifting a heavy pot, or scratching the floor. It also doubles as portable open storage.

The Flores planter. Image: Meghan Plowman

The brand’s storage range has been expanded after Elise noticed an increase in demand; Shibui was created in reponse. “Storage and bookshelves have been in high demand; especially as bespoke cabinetry can be quite expensive and many people are moving into smaller homes and apartments and want to optimise their space,” says Elise.

Shibui L Shelf
The ‘Shibui L’ shelf

And as for any enduring ply prejudice, Elise feels that while Australians have become more enthusiastic about ply, there is a long way to go before the material reaches the level of popularity and appreciation that it enjoys in Europe. “There is still a misconception that ply is something you pick up at a hardware store for a quick weekend DIY project. The generic term plywood is simply the manufacturing technique of pressing thin layers of timber together to make it much stronger, so not all ply is created equal,” says Elise.

Ultimately, the quality of the material comes down to the timber it is made from, and Plyroom is very selective on this front, only using sustainably forested birch and beech.

Melbourne readers will be happy to note that the brand has recently opened a light-filled showroom in Melbourne’s Northcote. “We recently welcomed local design business Coco Flip into the showroom, and we are loving the creative energy that comes from sharing a space, as well as their beautiful lighting!”

Vintage coastal décor: shipped worldwide from Noosa

After a decade working on super yachts, sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean, Sally Oulton returned to Australia, became a mother and found herself living in the hills behind Noosa. “I was looking to create a business around the sea and through that process discovered a love of coastal homewares,” says Sally.

But with so many purveyors of ocean themed wares, Sally knew she needed a point of difference which is how the idea for her furniture and homewares business, Coastal Vintage, emerged. “I had a lightbulb moment when I thought about the possibility of selling old wares like my Nana and Uncle had in the UK. I then decided to combine coastal and vintage pieces,” says Sally who opened her business six years ago.

Initially opening two days a week (to fit around her daughters’ daycare schedule) and operating out of her garage, the business now has its own warehouse, trades six days a week, ships worldwide and is staffed by a crew of five. “We also open every day over the holiday breaks as many of our Instagram followers visit Noosa and want to come to the store,” says Sally who has over 40,000 Instagram followers.

Coastal Vintage
Coastal Vintage employee Amanda stands with a vintage oar

The store’s eclectic mix includes vintage nautical pieces, paddles and fishing gear, as well as sustainable coral, clamshells, glass floats, lobster pot buoys, custom made light fittings and brass hardware. “We love old rustic pieces juxtaposed against a freshly painted VJ panelled wall. We love the mix of old and new, and the layers of texture and personality that only comes from a curated collection,” says Sally who finds that many clients are seeking a special piece to add character and warmth to a new home or renovation.

As well as being an agent for the range, Sally uses Jolie Paints to breathe new life into vintage life rings and fishing buoys, as well as to create custom painted paddles and oars. She also hosts workshops showing people how to use the product.

Coastal Vintage has a fascinating array of wares

Unsurprisingly, many of Sally’s finds have found their way onto to cruise ships, into Hollywood blockbusters, houses in the Bahamas as well as beach shacks and Hampton’s style homes. “We’ve had some pieces in The Pirates of the Caribbean, the latest Elvis movie that is being made, an ABC show and many hotels and restaurants,” says Sally.

Brass hooks and handles

A pair of antique paddles, found in Indonesia, are going to be displayed in a Norwegian cruise ship that is currently being built, while another pair of paddles will be hung in a newly renovated Hilton hotel in the US.

Locally you’ll find Sally’s wares at Sydney’s Clovelly Hotel and The Boathouse in La Perouse, plus the Lord Byron Hotel in Byron Bay. “Paspaley Pearls sourced hundreds of small glass floats for an amazing display at Melbourne’s Crown casino recently too,” says Sally.

The range is sourced across the globe (everywhere from Australia to Indonesia, Japan, France, UK and the USA), through a process that has unearthed many family heirlooms; three of which have made their way back to their original owners, via Sally.

“One time, I found a lovely old photo at a market of a family on the beach in Pittwater. As soon as a customer saw it on Facebook, she recognised her ancestors and it is now in her home. Those stories give me goosebumps,” says Sally.

Coastal Vintage

As for her favourite products, she’s a big fan of the giant clam shells and the aged brass mermaid handles which can be found at the aforementioned Clovelly Hotel. “I had one clam shell that was over 200 years old and had been in the same family for over a century. It arrived at the original owner’s grandparents’ home via horse and cart.”
