The Block room reveals 2021: guest bedroom

Firstly, let’s talk about what’s new with The Block judging this year: defect lists! What a great idea and something that has probably been lacking thus far. Keith and Dan do an inspection before the judges and make a report on any defects, which is then presented to the judges, just in case they were to miss something! Fair’s fair, I reckon! A great addition to the process!

Ronnie & Georgia’s winning guest bedroom

And what an episode it was, with the returning faves taking out both first (Ronnie & Georgia) and last (Mitch & Mark) place! Not to mention the twins staying in a luxury hotel the night before (which is against the rules) and then getting breathalysed and not being allowed to start until they sobered up. And then Luke got sick (nothing to do with the night before, of course!) but the boys still managed to pull off second place.

Poor Tanya and Vito (the sweetest people ever) had to sack their builder after Keith and Dan pointed out how much he had done wrong, leaving Tanya in tears (bless!). She’s such a soft touch she went into full mothering mode with hungover Luke!

Anyway, onto the rooms and the judging!

Ronnie & Georgia

Score 24.5/30: FIRST

Spend: $11,305 (the least of anyone)

With soaring ceilings and a playful style that manages to be (as Neale Whitaker said) neutral but still interesting, Block faves Ronnie and Georgia showed they were back to win with this stylish room. And win they did!

From the Velux skylights to the perfect layered bedding, this is a room that Darren Palmer called “aspirational classic contemporary”. He said it showed how much the pair have grown from the dark and moody palette that was their Elsternwick trademark.

“So impressive!” says Shaynna. “It’s so considered, it’s frightening and talk about a massive amount of cabinetry.” Darren said: “There’s so much to love!”

Shop the look: Photographic prints | Arch side table

Mark & Mitch

Score 22.5/30: LAST

Spent: $13,823.20

Goodbye Palm Springs, hello contemporary modern said the judges to a guest bedroom that clearly says there is more to Mitch and Mark than their Oslo build showed. With its statement Grafico wall and soft colour choices, the pair created a guest sanctuary complete with study nook (or work space) perfect for a post-covid home, and a sun-drenched extra bedroom.

Shaynna said it was great to see them try a new style. Neale’s first impressions were that it was small, oppressive even. Shaynna said the desk was too shoved in. And she spotted that the door wasn’t fixed. Neale even said it was a little bland!

Shaynna loved the pelmet lighting, Darren loved the bed linen and the palette. Neale said he really liked the boys but he felt the room was too generic and he was surprised.

Shop the look: Mitch & Mark’s own brand candle | Tall glass rainbow vase

Tanya & Vito

Score 23/30 EQUAL THIRD

Spent: $14,199.98

Tanya’s unique and vibrant palette brought a sense of fun to the room, with wood panelling topped by a terrazzo shelf behind the beautifully styled bed, flowing sheers over the window, streaming sunlight from the Velux skylights and a hanging plant making this a soft space.

Darren liked the colour combos and the way the art worked with the bed linen without being too matchy-match. But the judges blasted their cheap-looking sheers, especially as Vito works in the window furnishings business!

And sadly so many of their (fired) builder’s defects were still not fixed. But Neale said there were lots of nice touches and Darren liked the way there was room to swing a cat!

Shop the look: Flower Fields canvas print | Crested cockatoo set

Josh & Luke

Score 24/30 SECOND

Spent: $20,722.80

With its dark colour palette accentuated by a beautifully styled bed against a soft-upholstered wall and bold glass-fronted cabinetry, Josh and Luke’s guest bedroom is, the judges decided, sexy, cool and very different. For Darren it was the big architectural decisions, such as the bi-fold doors that worked best, and he can’t wait to see what they’ll open out to when the rest of the house is built.

It was definitely one for the boys though. Darren said it was “waaaaaaay better” than last week and was impressed by the glam, glass-doored wardrobes. Neale said it was sexy. Shaynna however, said she hated the wardrobes and they were destined to end up looking a mess in reality! Got to love a bit of controversy!

Darren said there was so much he liked and Shaynna said the way they styled the bed (wonder if Mitch & Mark regret helping them!) was stunning. She said they stepped up five levels from last week (have to agree!).

Shop the look: Abstract watercolour canvas

Kirsty & Jesse

Score 23/30 EQUAL THIRD

Spent: $14,757.58

From the soft blue walls with wainscoting and accent architraves to the plantation shutters and highlight window, Kirsty and Jesse created a guest bedroom retreat with an obvious space for a generous en-suite to come. Throw in ample storage courtesy of the twin bedside tables and built-in cabinetry and the result is, to quote Darren: “coastal chic, a little bit plantation and a little bit country!”.

Shaynna said the Hamptons style would be very popular with buyers in the area. Neale said they’d chosen to be very discreet and similar to last week, and he didn’t want them to become a one-trick pony. He and Shaynna didn’t like that all you could see from bed was a window which was too high to see anything out of. That’ll be their expensive new highlight window. Eep.

The judges loved the spacious size of the room and the generous storage and said the execution was great but the styling needed to go up a notch.

Of course I’d love to know, WHAT DID YOU THINK?

The Block 2020 upstairs room reveals

Everyone approached their spaces slightly differently on The Block this week but all but one had a home office alongside their bedroom. And nobody can argue how important they’ve become! Finally, Sarah and George got their first win (hooray!) and it was last place for former favourites Jimmy and Tam.

Let’s recap!

Harry and Tash | 28/30 | Second place

The judges loved the home office and how it reflected nature outside and thought it showed great restraint. The paintwork was heavily criticised, but that was all.

Into the bedroom itself and Shaynna said it was stunning. Darren said the corner must have been really hard to work with but that they’d managed to make it a great feature. “It’s a really good, private, useful adult space.”

Neale said demonstrating multi-use was really important from a real estate perspective. Shaynna said: “This house can grow into whatever the family wants to throw at it.”

Darren and Neale loved the sheer curtains too. “We feel the joy and brightness and life that’s in this house. Harry and Tash have hit their stride.” Shaynna said paintwork aside, the room was flawless and they were peaking at the right time!

Picks to buy: Fern Siebler artworks | Dior Catwalk coffee table book

***

Sarah and George | 28.5/30 | Winners!

Sarah and George finally got a win for their upstairs rooms that included a work from home space, a powder room and a kids room.

Shaynna loved how spacious and bright the hallway was. She thought their last study was claustrophobic but liked this one much better. Neale loved how it had been styled. Darren said the attention to detail in the finishes was great.

Into the powder room. Darren said the matching floor and wall tiles were impactful in a small room. Neale loved the little black sink but thinks they could have had more fun with the room, and created more contrast.

Into the kid’s room and that’s where they got really excited! Darren wanted to be a little kid again! “When you’re going to do a kid’s room, go all the way,” Shaynna said.

Neale thought it was very clever because although it was beautifully styled as a kid’s room, it could easily become something else. “Everything they’ve chosen is so right. It creates a wonderful sense of whimsy and emotion. There’s something very childlike about the mural but it could also work for an older child or an adult.”

“This whole level works,” says Shaynna.

Picks to buy: Kids’ lace teepee | Upholstered console

***

Daniel and Jade | 27.5/30 | Third place

The South Australian farmers had a different space upstairs to everyone else; as well as a third bedroom, they had a secret attic that can be used for storage.

Shaynna loved how large the study/rumpus room was. Darren loved the multipurpose room. Neale said it was a very thoughtful design.

But Shaynna felt the styling wasn’t quite right and the couch was a little too stiff. Neale said it didn’t have the emotional pull of the previous two rooms but buyers would see it as a real value add.

The judges all loved that there were five bedrooms in the main part of this house. “There’s no doubt this adds massive value,” Neale said. Shaynna loved the wardrobes. Neale said it was a useful room for a guest or you could use it as an entire floor for the kids.

Then they found the secret attic! The judges said they’d got the most out of every spare inch of their home.

Pick to buy: Octavia Tomyn art

***

Luke and Jasmin | 26/30 | Fourth place

Darren said the big hallway was a real bonus. They loved the barn door and hardware but hated how it was mounted and thought it needed a brass handle too. Once inside though, there was a lot to like! Shaynna said the styling was superb. Neale said there was a feeling of luxury and elegance. Darren liked how the room was an office/TV room and much more conducive to watching TV than in the last house with its big comfy modular.

They said it felt modern and coastal and right on the money. Shaynna thought it was a shame they hadn’t used plantation shutters. And then Darren noted the bottom drawer didn’t open properly. But overall they were impressed.

The hallway paintwork needed a lot of attention. But once into the bedroom, they were happy again. Neale loved the green VJ wall and the rattan bedhead. Darren loved the lights on the VJ. Shaynna thought the bed could have been styled better and wondered why they didn’t choose brass handles for the wardrobes.

“The standard this year is so high that we are nothing the imperfections,” Neale said. Darren felt the rooms had great emotional appeal.

Picks to buy: Brass clam shell | LED wall lights | Barn door hardware

***

Jimmy and Tam  | 25.5/30 | Last place

The judges loved the “epic” pocket door. They loved the little TV space although the TV was way too high for the sofa. Neale thought not having an office even suggested was a mistake.

Darren did love the joinery, the sofa and the colour palette. Neale said it wasn’t really tugging at his heart strings. And Shaynna said smart spending was starting to look a bit stingy!

The bedroom though was a success. Shaynna said it had a sense of luxury. Darren said it was gorgeous and he loved the materials palette.

Neale hated the dried floral arrangement and said it was “funereal in its ugliness”. He admitted though that the colour palette was gorgeous. “They’ve made brown look beautiful, they’ve made brown sing.”

Lastly Neale said if they weren’t planning a study in their studio apartment they had made a big mistake and that they had to have one.

Picks to buy: Slim Aarons framed prints | Brushed gold side table | Satin brass door handles

The Block 2019: guest bedroom 2 All Stars reveals

We’re currently experiencing a cable outage at Interiors Addict HQ! In short, some live wires came crashing down across the road outside in Friday night’s storms and although we’re nearly back to normal, we couldn’t tune into The Block last night! So, today’s write-up comes courtesy of our friends at The Block Shop! And as I still haven’t watched, I’d love you to tell me what the rooms were really like and which you thought should have won!

Mitch and Mark / Alisa and Lysandra: LAST PLACE
Score: 27/30

Mitch and Mark – with the help of Block all stars Alisa and Lysandra, managed to create a simply stunning room this week, despite the fact they flipped the architect’s plans again, changing the space to become a huge master suite, complete with walk-in robe and ensuite, connected via a private corridor.

“This room is the grand statement of what we’ve done. The master bedroom is the owner’s sanctuary,” Mitch said ahead of reveal.

The judges loved what they did – especially their statement ceiling, complete with that amazing pendant light.

Tess and Luke / Josh and Elyse: JOINT THIRD PLACE
Score: 28.5

Queenslanders Tess and Luke paired with previous Block champs Josh and Elyse, whose understated and chic fingerprints were all over this stunning, pared back “Scan-deco” guest bedroom.

The hero of the room was undoubtedly that beautiful wooden feature wall, which worked beautifully with the dressed bed in blush pinks and greys, the dark grey walls, light grey fitted robes, study nook with wire-framed chair, and the beautiful suede ottoman at the foot of the bed.

Deb and Andy / Josh and Jenna: FIRST PLACE
Score: 29.5

Deb and Andy – with help from Block mega-champs Josh and Jenna – went all out this week to present a stunning guest bedroom. And they were rewarded with a win! Courtesy of that controversial bonus point.

As Deb explained, this week the couple from country New South Wales were attempting to “not just create a look, but also a feeling.” And they certainly did that – the judges fell in love with their simple yet sophisticated guest bedroom space.

El’ise and Matt / Ronnie and Georgia: SECOND PLACE
Score: 29

The addition of Perth super champs Ronnie and Georgia really spurred this year’s Western Australian contestants on this week, and they stepped up their game to reveal a simply stunning guest bedroom. This week the couple effectively created a second master, choosing to add AM and PM wardrobes and a connecting ensuite, giving their house the option of a second main bedroom space.

And it was a master stroke – almost winning them the week, if Andy and Deb hadn’t used their pesky bonus point!

The judges loved their room, which featured that bold, art-inspired Graffico feature wall, blush pink walls, a burgundy bed styled in greys and greens, marble side bench, soft, grey occasional chair and circular side tables. A black grid-formation mirror, black wardrobes and black details on the furniture tied everything together, making a dramatic, opulent and sumptuous guest bedroom that the judges liked a great deal.

Jesse and Mel / Deanne and Darren: JOINT THIRD PLACE
Score: 28.5

Jesse and Mel, along with their all star teamsters Dee and Daz, presented a beautiful guest bedroom, which, as Jesse explained, was all about “effortless luxury.” They included a recessed slate-grey velvet bedhead, which complimented the blush pink linen, the dark-coloured wardrobes, that large circular floor rug, the round side tables, and simple brass wall sconces.

The judges liked what they had done.

The Block 2019: week 1 guest bedroom reveals

I’m so excited for another season of The Block and to bring you our regular room reveal posts again! As usual, week one was a bit of a mess, with a lot of unfinished rooms, but those poor couples certainly got thrown in at the deep end! Read on to see what they managed in just a few days, what the judges thought, and our picks to buy from the products they used.

House 1: Mark and Mitch (24 out of 30 and second place)

The guys were proud of their first room with a Mid Century luxe edge, and said they could see Frank Sinatra in there! They were right to be happy as the judges were too and it was a great first room for them to start the competition with.

Shaynna was delighted to see some colour and loved the details. Neale said it was impressive and Darren couldn’t get over the scale of it.

Neale added to produce a room like this in week one, they must know what they’re doing! “The room really hits you between the eyes on so many levels.”

Darren said they obviously knew what was on trend. Shaynna said the pendant light was just beautiful, sexy and really hot! She added the colour of carpet was really bold.

Neale said it had an incredible sense of luxury and the only issue was that there were just too many heroes. Shaynna said while she loved that it was eclectic and fun, they would have to reel it in or risk running out of money very quickly.

The judges all loved the wardrobes with gold handles.

Our picks to buy: Glass chandelier by Beacon Lighting | Kristoffer Paulsen St Kilda prints

***

House 2: Tess and Luke (17.5 out of 30 and joint fourth place)

Not surprisingly, the couple were disappointed not to have finished (by any stretch) and Tess was the first to say she hated their room! It was also no surprise when they came joint last.

Some of the judges were pretty forgiving if you ask me, with Darren  saying he could see where they were going with it, the carpet was spot on, the walnut on trend and he liked the colour palette and the layout.

Shaynna on the other hand felt underwhelmed and like she’d seen this styling before, for the past three years! “We want to see personality. Take some risks!” She also said they’d used lots of incorrect styles for the heritage of the building.

Luke’s workmanship got top marks however!

Neale thinks if it was finished it would be elegant and successful. “I’m seeing a respect for the heritage of the building.”

Our picks to buy: Black circular round mirror | Bodie walnut side table by Modern Furniture

***

House 3: Andy and Deb (17.5 out of 30, joint fourth place)

Darren said ignoring the unpainted walls, it was very fresh, he loved the palette and was in love with the bed.

Neale agreed but wasn’t as taken the with styling, saying it felt a little predictable.

Shaynna, looking for more oomph as ever, said the look they’re going for will work if they amp it up a bit!

Our picks to buy: Sophia four poster bed by House of Orange | Terrazzo side table by HK Living

***

House 4: El’ise and Matt (21 out of 30 and third place)

The judges all agreed it was a stunning pendant light, and they were so right! Darren said there was a lot of luxury in there, despite it not being overly accessorised.

Shaynna was very impressed with all the details they added like the picture rails. Neale enjoyed the unusual little touches. “They’ve got personality, it works.”

Darren felt it gave a nod to heritage but in a very contemporary way which was successful. And they all loved the wardrobe.

Our picks to buy: Large beaded mirror by Schots | Chandelier by Beacon Lighting

***

House 5: Jesse and Mel (25.5 out of 30 and first place)

It really was a case of saving the best until last with this pair! “It’s finished!” exclaimed Shaynna!

Neale said it was beautiful and he had never seen a room delivered to this level in week one. “I just love it!”

Darren said it felt like a brand new build but with all the appropriate heritage details. “They’ve hit the nail on the head.”

Neale said there was little to fault but he hated the exposed lightbulbs of the bedside lamps which were searing his eyeballs!

You really couldn’t disagree with the judges’ choice of winner this week. Real estate agent Jesse and obviously stylish Mel are looking like the ones to watch!

Our picks to buy: Fabric wall panels by Nouveau Bisgrove | Navy linen duvet set by Eadie Lifestyle | All About You limited edition canvas by Liam Murphy

The Block 2018: guest bedroom room reveals

It was a mixed bag last night! I started off feeling a bit “meh” about all these guest bedrooms. Let’s face it; they’re not always the most exciting rooms or best showcases of what a couple can do. They felt a bit formulaic: fancy upholstered bedhead, feature armchair, lots of cushions. You know what I’m saying! But there were a couple I really loved which turned it around for me, and they were Bianca and Carla’s and Norm and Jess’s. Here’s what the judges had to say, what I thought, and what I’d buy…

I was so glad Bianca and Carla won, not just because I thought their room was the best, but because I (and at least half the country!) thought their bathroom should have won last week too! And I love how surprised and humble they were!

Bianca and Carla: 1st place, 26/30

Darren loved that they’d used timber panelling again. “That’s awesome.” Shaynna also said she loved the roof. Neale had one word: hallelujah! “Somebody has given us a room, finally, that feels modern, luxurious, glamorous and absolutely on brief,” he added.

Shyanna said the bedsides were her new favourites ever. Darren noticed they were both floating and underlit. How cool was that?!

Neale agreed it was “next level”.

Shaynna was first to notice the bad paint job though. Whoops!

They all said the walk-in was beautiful. Shaynna was in storage heaven and Neale said it felt luxurious and and bespoke. Darren said the materiality was “just so good“.

Our pick to buy: Bedside tables by our friends at Ingrain Designs (they can do no wrong!), Lincoln bedhead by another fave, Heatherly Design Bedheads (we have the same design in our new master which we’ll get round to finishing and revealing one of these days!), and Lamp de Marseille wall lights.

Courtney and Hans: 2nd place, 25/30

Neale loved the “absolutely beautiful and sophisticated palette.” Shaynna loved how they made the bed and thought they picked an amazing chair. The lack of styling on the side table didn’t go unnoticed though!

The judges loved the choice of laminate wardrobe colour and texture. Darren said the room diden’t feel at all claustrophobic. Neale’s only criticism was for the lights. He would have preferred lamps or sconces, not too-heavy pendants. Darren liked how they tied in with the other black in the room however.

On the downside, the paintwork on the ceiling was woeful. Neale said it was well on its way to being lovely but was undercooked. Darren suggested they should sheer curtain the whole window wall. Agreed!

Our pick to buy: Halo wingback chair by Space to Create, Vintage rose linen by west elm and brass crab by Mr Pinchy (I have this at home in all three sizes!).

Norm and Jess: 3rd place, 24.5/30

This would have been my second place.

Darren said: “Lush! Oh my God! This is hot! Somebody paid attention!”

Neale said “suddenly the luxe factor has shot up”.

Darren said there was lots of colour, lots of texture, but it wasn’t overwhelming. “Can you tell I love it?!”

Shaynna said she always loves bedheads that go past the edges of the bed and behind the bedsides (thanks Shyanna, we have one of those!). “It’s absolutely gorgeous and works really well.” She loved the sconces but  thought the room would probably be a bit dark. And the powerpoint was in the wrong place. Darren was NOT impressed they’d tried to cover that mistake up!

They all thought the wardrobe was amazing, Darren loved the the panelled profile and the handles. The drapery was very well executed and while the study area joinery was well designed, the styling was a letdown.

Big picture? “The room is very good and they deserve to be in the penthouse but they must pay more attention to functionality.”

Our pick to buy: Brass wall lights from Beacon Lighting, THAT bedhead (of course) from Heatherly Design and Landry bench seat from west elm.

Kerrie and Spence: 3rd place, 23/30

The judges loved the library (so did I!), with Darren saying he was a “giant big fan” but Neale said the actual bedroom part felt a little claustrophobic. And it did!

Darren was annoyed they didn’t listen to their advice not to use a bedhead in an already cramped space. To make it worse, the bedhead overlapped the switches either side.

Shaynna loved the colour palette though and Darren said the styling was far more sophisticated than they’d shown before. Neale said it was nice. He didn’t dislike it but nothing was wowing him. They needed a little little bit more warmth, spirit and soul.

The storage however, was excellent.

Our pick to buy: Audrey bedside from west elm (I have the navy version in my master and they’re divine. Also have the dresser and cot from this range in our new baby room).

Hayden and Sara: Last place (second week in a row), 22.5/30

Shaynna said the recessed ceiling was the hero and they’d done a beautiful job with that. Darren praised the skirting, architraves, ceiling and cornicing, saying they were all beautiful. Shaynna added the execution was incredible.

It was all going so well…

Seems the furniture and styling really let the room down. Neale said it felt flat. “It feels like a room in a boutique hotel ready to be renovated. It’s boring and predictable. In paring back, they’ve thrown the baby out with the bathwater. What’s left is pretty soulless.”

It got worse. He compared the feature wall to the eighties rag-rolling paint technique. Shaynna said the shimmery velvet bedhead was fighting with it and that it felt like a display home. And not a high end one! Ouch!

I have to agree, although I’d perhaps be a little kinder. It just didn’t work! I particularly hated that feature wall and ‘matching’ bedhead combo. What were they thinking? Where was the contrast?

Shaynna said the bedsides didn’t match the size of the lights. “It’s top heavy.” Darren said they should have put the feet on the bed. Neale said it felt as if the bed had collapsed.

I had to agree that nothing in the study area made an impact. It was all just floating there, with the chair far too heavy for the desk.

Sara was NOT happy with that feedback! I foresee a lot of complaining and upset ahead.

The judges all seemed to agree that the walk in robe was probably the best bit. But Shaynna and Neale said they needed to style it at least a a bit to tell a story to potential buyers.

Our pick to buy: Brass gallery frames from west elm.

All this year’s wardrobes are by Kinsman, who also supplied the kitchens for House Rules recently.

Expert Tips

5 tips for getting your home ready for guests this Christmas

Whether your place is in need of a last minute spruce up or you want to go in hard to impress, these top tips from Madras Link will have your place feeling and looking more charming and comfortable than any restaurant, hotel or bed and breakfast.

Tip 1.

Creating a warm welcome is as easy as throwing down a fresh new doormat for the perfect first impression.

Whether you want to say “Welcome” or “Home”, or show off your unique style with colour and prints, a fun doormat sets the scene for the love that awaits behind the door.

Tip 2.

Switching out those old couch cushions will bring a fresh new look to your living room. Mix prints and patterns with textured block colours in woven cottons, luxuriously soft velvets and look for embellished details like fringes, tufts and tassels. Then pile them on for impact.

Tip 3.

Guests staying over? Don’t forget the comforting details in the guest room. Create a quick transformation with a bold upholstered armchair, new bedside lamps and a pop of colour from a throw blanket (if it’s really last minute, moving a statement cushion from Tip 2 into the bedroom can still make all the difference).

Tip 4.

Have plenty of serving boards and cheese knives on hand. Who can wait to dive in after a big market shop for cheeses and antipasto? Not us, so we make sure we keep an assortment of serveware within arm’s reach.

Tip 5.

Don’t say goodbye to your guests without pulling out all the stops for an at-home soiree. Create a dining experience that cannot be matched by any restaurant with glamorous wine coolers, sophisticated brass or marble serveware and napery uniquely styled by you. This combined with your cooking will wow your guests and create an unforgettable night.

The Block season 13, room 2 (guest bedroom) reveals

Ah, what satisfying watching that was last night! Five fabulous bedrooms (some with en suites, some without, interestingly!). The judges said the quality of all the rooms was more like what they’d expect at end of the competition. And it was close with only 1.5 points between first and last place. And can we talk about the bedheads? So many utterly stunning choices (and not surprisingly, four out of five were from Heatherly Design Bedheads, who recently made me one). So, onto the photos, judges’ comments, scores and our favourite picks and where to buy…

Jason and Sarah (joint third with 27/30)

The couple cleverly created a Jack and Jill en suite to serve not one but two guest bedrooms. I like it! And they went brave with a dark colour scheme of black and charcoal which worked so well!

Shaynna said it immediately felt beautiful. Neale called it beautiful and dramatic. And Darren said it reminded him of a boutique hotel. Darren said the wallpaper hit the right note and loved the metallic, saying it was the perfect example of how important contrast is in a room.

After last week’s cluttered styling, this week, the judges noticed a subtlety in their choices, with Neale saying they hit a nice balance of vintage and contemporary.

Shaynna criticised the painting a bit, but overall said it was a winning room, that aside.

The en suite went down well too, unfinished painting aside, and Neale said it felt luxurious.

OUR PICKS: Bedhead from Heatherly Design Bedheads, brass wardrobe handles from Lo & Co Interiors, Larkin brass table lamp from Pottery Barn.

Hannah and Clint (joint third with 27/30)

It was a tough week for these two. Their bathroom didn’t meet code and had to come down, so they decided to stick to just the bedroom, no wet room. Then Clint’s grandfather died.

Luckily, there was plenty of praise for their room. Darren said, unlike their last bedroom, this wasn’t bland and it had the right level of contrast in it. Shaynna said the styling on the bedside tables was superb and loved the wall sconces. Neale and Darren loved the grey wardrobes with brass handles and Shaynna loved the desk nook.

Neale hated the art however, and found the room quite visually cluttered. While the room showed a real confidence, Neale said there was a danger of them going too far the other way.

All  the judges said it was above and beyond the best work they’d done to date. The wardrobes were definitely my favourite feature.

OUR PICKS: Bedhead from Heatherly Design Bedheads, Stiletto marble and black sides tables from Freedom, velvet cushion from Eadie Lifestyle.

Ronnie and Georgia (first place with 28/30)

Anyone else finding Georgia annoyingly arrogant? I know it’s probably TV and editing, but gah! Case in point knocking off the night before reveal and going to the movies. Can’t knock it though; they produced the winning room and it was gorgeous!

The judges were clearly wowed, starting with the dark timber floorboards. Shaynna said the room was so glamorous, Darren called it “just a really beautiful room,” and Neale said it was timeless in its sophistication. Shaynna loved the cornice and the ceiling rose.

About the only criticism was for the black, “off the shelf” curtain rail. Darren said there was lots of interest but nothing was jarring with anything else. And Shaynna said the couple had impeccable style. Forget the attitude, I’ve got to agree there!

And how cool were the switches and USB chargers incorporated into the side of the bed base. Man, would I love something like that?!

A well deserved win, even without an en suite!

OUR PICKS: Bedhead from Heatherly Design Bedheads, Wild Roses art print from Co.Co, blush fur cushion from Co.Co, Lexi armchair from Freedom, grey floor rug from Freedom, Orion brass pendant light from Beacon Lighting.

Sticks and Wombat (last place with 26.5)

The boys suffered a wonky wall, a wonky floor, and their plumber hitting a pipe but still managed to pull off a bedroom (with fireplae), walk-in robe and en suite. What?! amazing.

Neale said it was absolutely stunning, Darren cooed over the “absolutely beautiful” real Blackbutt floors and Neale said there were times when only a ‘wow’ will do. He added it was sensational and felt right.

Thank GOD Shaynna mentioned the eyesore that was the bed and its styling though. Someone teach them not to put cushions on a point ASAP, please! My eyes! As the others showed, the choice of bedhead and bed styling is so important. But good on them, everything else in that room was well done. Although the rustic bedsides worried Neale too!

While I agree with Shaynna that the ultra modern en suite wasn’t in keeping with the bedroom, it was, as she said “mind blowing” that they’d done one, and such a big one!

The judges said the architectural choices the boys are making are outstanding but warned them to think about continuity and how the whole house will come together at the end.

Elyse and Josh (second place with 27.5/30)

Their room being smaller was definitely not a disadvantage with Neale saying good things come in small packages! I seriously loved the paneling and the bedhead in this room. I now need to panel a room in my home immediately!

Darren said the velvet bedhead looked (and felt!) amazing. Neale said they were demonstrating a real sense of balance.

They were in love with the en suite too (and me!), Shaynna praised the handmade subway tiles. Neale said their level of taste was really something; exquisite!

Although Shaynna thought the shower shelf was too high, she said the execution throughout both rooms was utterly perfect.

A shame this pair didn’t win if you ask me.

The Block week 4 room reveals: guest bedroom & walk-in robe

By Jen Bishop with Phoebe Netto

I love how each week is throwing up a new contender for the top prize this season, with no clear favourite yet. This week was no exception with the boys not just taking out first place but receiving 30 out of 30!

This week’s scores:

  • First: Andy and Ben with 30
  • Second: Karlie and Will with 26.5
  • Third: Dan and Carleen with 26
  • Fourth: Kim and Chris with 24.5
  • Last: Julia and Sasha with 24

Karlie & Willh1_r4_guestbed_karlie_will-23

That bedhead! Divine! And clever. I love the way these two are giving Art Deco a modern spin but I’m still not 100% on the exposed brick. The bed styling was a bit all over the place and I would have liked to have seen something more simple and chic.

h1_r4_guestbed_karlie_will-31

What the judges said:

  • The all loved bedhead with the geometric print and brass
  • They all loved the restored original feature
  • Neale felt the styling (particularly cushions on the bed) went too far and weakened the impact of the bedhead
  • Neale was not a fan of the artwork and said it had been done too much before. Shaynna and Darren agreed.
  • They were all fans of walk-in robe but would have preferred the colour of the timber to be darker.

Dan and Carleenh2_r4_guestbed_dan_carleen-12

Although that Incy Interiors velvet bedhead is just delicious, I really didn’t like this room as much as the judges did. I do love those West Elm Terrace side tables though and would totally have them in my bedroom if I didn’t have a toddler!

h2_r4_guestbed_dan_carleen-32

What the judges said:

  • What an improvement on the last bedroom (the less said about that the better!)
  • Darren loved that the walls were white and they all loved the cornice
  • Neale liked the colour palette a lot and how it is in keeping with what was popular during the period
  • All the judges were perplexed by the size of bedhead in relation to bed, as it had gaps on both sides
  • Shaynna had an issue with the extra down lights over the centre of the bed
  • The choice of the down lights weren’t popular and they would have preferred sconces
  • Neale felt it didn’t hit the mark compared to their bathroom. He said the walk-in robe had nothing special or luxury about it
  • Overall, it was a great improvement.

Andy & Benh3_r4_guestbed_andy_ben-11

Who would have thought, based on their first bathroom with the dollar razors out on display, that these likeable youngsters would pull off such a great room, and a 30 out of 30?! Changing the walk-in into an en suite, giving the judges back the toilet they were so upset about losing last week, proved to be a master stroke. They really have improved each week. We love an underdog!I love what the boys did this week, with its subtle monochrome palette and Deco touches that were somehow perfectly modern as well. Amazing progress! Although the wallpaper mural was a big statement, in general, this week I felt like they showed that less is sometimes more.

h3_r4_guestbed_andy_ben-15

What the judges said:

  • They were impressed to see an ensuite and Darren said they have knocked it out of the ballpark
  • Neale said they were not just flying through the competition but soaring!
  • Shaynna and Darren loved the wallpaper and Neale said the colour palette was very sophisticated. He appreciated the use of subtle pattern and print in the bed linen
  • The execution got top marks
  • Shaynna was very impressed that they were able to pull off the ensuite and bedroom in one week.

h3_r4_guestbed_andy_ben-16

Julia & Sasha

h4_r4_guestbed_julia_sasha-18

After last week’s stunner of a bathroom, it was all a bit of an anticlimax for the girls this week. Poor Julia had a crisis of confidence this week after the judges’ comments about her previous bedroom. While I loved their bed choice, I did feel the room felt a bit too plain and wasn’t cohesive. Top marks for using the same Antoinette Ferwerda print I have in my own apartment though! I still have faith the girls can bring it back next week, judging by their previous rooms. That is if they get over this week’s comments…

h4_r4_guestbed_julia_sasha-13

What the judges said:

  • Neale said he liked this bedroom better than the previous one but he said it lacked something and he wasn’t connecting with it
  • Shaynna said it was too “magazine-y” and she wants to “magnify the elegance”
  • Darren said it was the right balance to be very saleable
  • Neale agreed with Darren that it is friendly and familiar, it was just “nice” and not memorable and the  pendants were “appalling”
  • Shaynna noted that everyone else in the building was pushing the boundaries and leaving their comfort zones but the girls need to let their guard down. The room is feeling uptight. Neale agreed.
  • “Julia is a stylist who is being out-styled” by some of the other contestants.

Ouch!

h4_r4_guestbed_julia_sasha-11

Kim & Chris
h5_r4_guestbed_kim_chris-107

I thought this couple (who I have a total soft spot for, they’re so nice!) did great this week, although I had to agree with the judges in that it didn’t have anything standout. I couldn’t really fault anything either, I just didn’t love it!

h5_r4_guestbed_kim_chris-106-2

What the judges said:

  • “It feels like they have found a style that they are comfortable with,” said Neale
  • Shaynna liked the dramatic artwork and lighting, and said it was memorable
  • Neale said it is a bit of a showroom; nice but lacking personality
  • Darren said it was big, friendly and broad enough to appeal to different buyers. He was impressed at the attention to detail like future use of power points
  • The judges want to see a little more emotion and their personalities in their rooms.

The Block room reveals week 2: guest bedroom and en suite

I loved the variety in last night’s room reveals. Whether good, bad or ugly, they were all pretty unique. There wasn’t much shock factor in the judging though, with the same couples coming first and last as last week! While Dean and Shay took home a sweet 10 grand again (got to pay for that 40 grand bathroom somehow!), poor Luke and Ebony were in fifth place yet again. I’m really feeling for the second chance siblings and really hope they can  get some confidence in their ability and personal style and take things up a notch next week. Fingers crossed.

Kingi and Caro: 26.5, 2nd place

I think these two are really likeable, don’t you? They’re doing so well and must be frustrating (if encouraging!) to be so close behind Dean and Shay and their $10,000 wins!

carokingi1

This pair stayed consistent with last week’s room, using a vinyl wrap on the en suite door like they did on last week’s showstopping bath tub. And there was more of Kingi’s lovely rendering on the bedroom feature wall and in the en suite vanity top, to great effect. Their raw industrial aesthetic is very obvious and they seem confident of their personal style.

carokingi2

The judges, as hoped, all touched the rendered wall as soon as they came in and all loved the dark, rich colour. Neale loved the bedside table and light combination and Darren said he could really see the vibe they were going for: edgy, urban and a little bit industrial. He said the bedhead was the right choice as it softened the texture of render and the tram graphic on the en suite door worked a treat. Shaynna said it was sensational and that the door handle spelled luxury and money.

Shaynna also complimented the labour and the way they had worked with angles of the room. Neale said they’d made the most of the space and it felt big. They all slammed the styling though and said the cushions were ordinary.

carokingi3

The en suite got positive feedback too with Shaynna noting it felt a lot bigger than it was and she loved the custom concrete top, the taps, basin and bench space. Darren said they’d squeezed more storage into the tiny bathroom than they’d seen in many main bathrooms and that it was a very successful room.

–Our pick to buy: Basic Habitat slate tray | Beacon Lighting adjustable floor lamp | Linen & Moore grey throw | Bedsides

Whitney & Andy: 18.5, 4th place

I loved the exposed whitewashed brick and the copper pendants in this room. The less said about the rest of it the better but I can’t not mention that rug?! Gah!

whitneyandy1

whitneyandy2

On entering, Neale said “wow” and Shaynna said “oooh” but not necessarily for the right reasons! Darren immediately said it was a guest bedroom because there was no way there was enough hanging space for a ‘real’ bedroom. Shaynna went so far as to say the choice to install a hanging stick rather than a wardrobe was ludicrous and while that would usually seem over the top, I have to agree! Neale said it was a big mistake and Darren said he wouldn’t try to sell the place without a wardrobe.

On the plus side, the room felt very spacious (that’ll be the lack of wardrobe!) and Shaynna liked the bulkhead all the way round, saying it showed the thought process was great. Darren liked the bedhead but said the rug was very wrong. Again, agreed! Neale said it was a very confused room. “I don’t know if I’m in an old motel or  a luxury apartment.” Shaynna went one further and called it a mishmash.

whitneyandy3

When it came to the en suite they were pleasantly surprised although the lack of doors would surely lead to flooding the first time the shower was used. Darren said it felt a little eighties.

Overall, the judges’ advice was to put this week’s rooms behind them and refocus. Owch.

–Our pick to buy: Curious Grace bedside tables | artwork | navy quilt cover set

Suzi & Vonni: 23, 3rd place

Despite all manner of tradie troubles, the Gold Coast girls finished their room as they’d hoped this week, with its polarising glass panels covered in a photographic park scene. It was a brave move which was never going to be popular with everyone! I wasn’t a fan myself but you know what, at least it was original!

suzivonni1

First up with his view was Neale, who said the other half of the room was 10 out of 10 but the glass panels freaked him out. Shaynna said the provincial look of the room didn’t go with the glass mural at all, likening it to a corporate mural in a reception centre. Eek! She also hated the plastic timber on the wall, the carpet and the mismatched handles.

suzivonni2

Darren however really loved all of it. “I think it’s cool, as a guest bedroom it’s interesting.” He said the girls’ apartment would definitely be the Palazzo Versace of the building!

Neale said the en suite was lacking in impact but he was relieved! Darren said it was very understated and they all loved the tapware and the layout. Darren was really surprised and disappointed about the unflattering lighting.

suzivonni3

Shaynna, to be fair, said she enjoyed how brave this pair are but they they needed to really rein it in a bit.

–Our pick to buy: The Monocle Guide to Better Living book | studded bedhead | round black concrete tray

Luke and Ebony: 18, last place

Last place last week and last place again this week. My interview with Ebony from before the series started is now starting to make a lot of sense. Despite reining in her plans for an entire feature wall of plum coloured pressed tin (what was she thinking?!) to two small panels, it still didn’t quite work out. Ok, that’s an understatement. I felt so sad for Ebony at the end after the scores were revealed. She’s so nice!

lukeebony1

Shaynna’s face! said it all. Darren simply said: “I don’t like it,” while Neale commented: “Pressed tin: haven’t seen that for a while!” Oh dear…

lukeebony2

Neale said he couldn’t imagine why anyone would choose to use that material and while he loved the reading corner in the room, it didn’t go with anything else. Shaynna loved the bedside tables but I fear she may have been grasping at straws.

It didn’t get all that much better in the en suite. It started well with Shaynna praising the layout and Darren, the lighting, underfloor heating and storage. Neale loved the black tapware and said the execution was excellent.

lukeebony3

But they all agreed the tile choices felt dated (I happened to love that floor if not the wall tiles!). Shaynna said the siblings were not bringing out their best at the moment and Neale didn’t hold back, saying he didn’t think the room would appeal to anyone.

–Our pick to buy: Oui and Non cushion covers | Hugo armchair | Single drawer black bedside table

Dean & Shay: 27.5, first place

These two lived up to their penthouse again this week, winning $10,000 for the second time in a row! It must be really hard for the other couples to keep liking them at this point, even though they do genuinely all seem quite friendly!

deanshay1

Despite their plan for a Megan Morton x Incy Interiors black four-poster bed bein replaced with a backup ensemble, they still killed it! Neale said it felt really fresh and Darren loved it, pointing out the bed dressing, saying it wasn’t easy and they’d got it perfect. Neale said the colour palette was beautiful; a young style delivered in grown up way.

deanshay other side

The only issue was the large (tick!) wardrobe which was hard to open.

deanshay3

The en suite got plenty of ticks too, for the storage, spacious feeling, attention to detail and consistency with last week’s bathroom. Shaynna said they were proving they were the right couple to get the penthouse.

deanshay4

–Our pick to buy: Rainy Sunday flower jars | Curious Grace bedsides | Scent of Home brass candle | Lumiere Art + Co Jessa print (last two bought from Cranmore Home)

Get the look: last night’s first Block Glasshouse guest bedroom reveals

With $10,000 up for grabs for the team who scored the highest with the judges, the pressure was on for the Blockheads to reveal their first rooms this week. To be honest I couldn’t wait to see each of the teams’ styles start to shine through and I have to say I was rather impressed for week one!

Carlene and Mike's room
Carlene and Michael’s room

Darren Palmer was impressed with the height of the doors and the sense of scale that experienced renovators Michael and Carlene created in their guest bedroom. Neale Whitaker absolutely loved the artwork above the bed and thought it was a good choice of pendant light. I would have to agree. I’m always a sucker for anything copper (especially with a grey wall)! I loved the refined luxe look and officially crowned it my favourite room of the week.

All three judges were impressed with the bones of Chris and Jenna’s room, however were quite critical of the couple’s execution of finishes and styling. I absolutely loved what they did with the ceiling and light fittings, however I do have to agree that the lights needed to hang a little lower. I thought it was really cool that the artwork paid homage to the building and the transformation it’s going through.

It was all about the window in Max and Karstan’s room as there really wasn’t that much else, literally! For a couple so organised, how did they end up with an unfinished room with no wardrobe or blind? Neale liked the simplicity of the room as well as the pendant lights and art but that didn’t take away from the fact that the room was unfinished. I loved the fact that the bed head was framed by a cutout in the wall and thought they made great styling and décor choices. I feel like next week could be their time to shine, what do you think?

Max and Karstan

It was a big week for the boys, Simon and Shannon, who were dubbed ‘the masters of detail’ and brought back the cactus! Neale described their room as having a Scandinavian feel that’s fresh, clean and contemporary. I thought their minimalist room was nice but it felt like it could slot right into Kyle and Kara’s apartment from last year (maybe it’s all that wood?). The boys are definitely perfectionists and have a good eye.

And then there was Darren and Deanne’s ‘urban cabin’ as Neale described it. The judges loved the artwork and that Darren and Deanne incorporated so many different textures into the room. I thought they made great styling choices and loved the pillows. I think for week one, considering Darren did all the labour, they had a great finish (despite not having a door).

Shannon and Simon only just took out week one by a single point. To be honest, I thought Michael and Karlene had it by one point but hey, who am I to judge?! Next week looks exciting. It’s main bathroom week which I’m surprised at, as it will be a big challenge considering it’s only week two and the couples are still finding their feet. You don’t want to mess up the main bathroom!

Am I the only one who can’t wait to see them judge each other? The wait is almost over my fellow Blockheads, tomorrow is the night we have been waiting for. The contestants will be judging each other’s rooms and there is $5,000 in prizes up for grabs! Do you think it will change the dynamic of the group? Which was YOUR favourite room this week?

If there’s something you liked that’s not mentioned here, you can find more from all the couples’ rooms at The Block Shop.

Get the look: Last night’s Block guest bedroom reveals

How impressive were last night’s guest bedroom reveals on The Block?! I actually really liked all the rooms and wouldn’t have liked to have had to pick the winner. But Kyal and Kara were the chosen couple and I did think their room was fantastic.

kyal and kara 3 guest bedroom the block

After slamming their water feature last week, the judges couldn’t believe they were seeing the same couple’s styling this week. Neale Whitaker said it felt clean and modern, in keeping with the loft environment and that the colour palette was perfectly restrained. Darren Palmer said the pair were at their best this week and that all the little things were done beautifully and that he was proud of their styling progress following his masterclass as they’d taken on board all his tips.

I think my own favourite this week was Chantelle and Steve’s room. It was certainly a strong week for those fans! I loved their brave parquetry wall feature, as did the judges. Neale said it was incredible and Darren said the room had real style to it. Shaynna loved the storage and the way the Art Deco features had been brought up to date. Their only real negative was about the antlers, which Neale called clichéd. I have to agree. I’m a bit over antlers!

chantelle and steve 1

I love rooms which are more than just a white box when you remove the furniture, yet still clean looking enough to work with different kinds of furniture. On that front, I thought these couples, and Alisa and Lysandra with their exposed brick, really delivered.

chantelle and steve 2

Now onto my favourite twins, Alisa and Lysandra. I loved their room too, and the fact they experimented with colour this week. The girls had the most mixed judges’ comments of everyone. Neale really loved their new design direction and their light sconces, while Shaynna Blaze — who the girls say judge them the harshest — said the look was too ‘in your face’ and would alienate some buyers.

alisa lysandra guest bedroom the block 1

Darren loved the lighting and the look but pointed out the position of the artwork wasn’t practical for sitting up in bed. And what did you think of that artwork (Portrait of Amy Winehouse After Klimt by Sue Quinn)? I loved it.

alisa and lysandra guest bedroom the block 2

Get Lisa & Lysandra’s look: pair of stick sconces by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $299, Bindi bright throw by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $49.95.

Last but not least, Brad and Dale impressed the judges by being in touch with their feminine side this week, although Neale didn’t like the colour palette and found it too primary and clichéd. Shaynna loved the storage but said the colour was too dark and the hanging rail was impractically high. Darren said the look was soft and beautiful.

brand and dale 2

Get Brad and Dale’s look: Gatsby cushion in teal, $49.95 | Colourful Life artwork by Maurice Golotta, $300 | Splash floor cushion, $179 | Faux stag head in platinum, $149 | Aura yellow Chevron Grande linen.

From hatred to love in one weekend: My spare room transformation

I know, I know, the title of this post sounds terribly melodramatic, but it’s a true reflection. I really HATED our spare room until the weekend. It upset me because it’s too small, too narrow, has built-ins I don’t really need but can’t remove (renting), a view of the house next-door and no redeeming features whatsoever. We have lived in our apartment almost a year and the spare room has been the bane of my life, particularly as I’m uber house proud, love socialising and having friends to stay. BUT… look what happened!

When Freedom offered me a $500 voucher to fix a problem in my home and blog about the experience, it was glaringly obvious that I had to give the spare room a go, especially as my dad is due to arrive from the UK in a fortnight. And look what I have managed to create. Can this really be that room that made me want to cry (I think it was hormones) because it was so ugly and useless?

Categories
Interiors Addict

Does ANYONE have a spare room they love?!

It seems to me that nobody really loves their spare bedroom. Am I right? I’m about to embark on my spare room project. I have been putting it off since we moved here in October but I have to sort it out now. The reason is that this  October my dad is coming to stay from the UK for two weeks, followed by another friend in November and another couple in December (yes, all the Poms come in summer!).

Love this built-in cleverly turned into an office!

I am always apologising for my spare room. When people come round for the first time they always, on account of me being into interiors and all house proud, request “the tour”. Hell, sometimes I even suggest it myself… But when it comes to the spare room I’m always saying things like “I haven’t started on that yet” or it’s a bit of a dumping ground or a laundry. It strikes me I have never ever loved the spare room in any home I lived in. And when you think about the fact that you pay a lot more for a two-bed apartment than a one-bed apartment, especially in Sydney, it seems a real waste not to use this room.
