The best Etsy finds from my wedding

I spent a LOT of time on Etsy prior to our wedding and I only really realised quite how much I bought for it via my favourite online shopping destination recently. This is because when people asked me where did I get this or that, the answer was, more often than not, Etsy! So, here’s what I bought and where you can get it. Enjoy…

Swarovski crystal earrings (worn by me). $58.96 from simplychic93. I really wanted them blue and a little different to the usual pearl bridal earrings but couldn’t afford real sapphires. It took two online purchases before I hit the nail on the head with these.

My veil (serious bargain and custom made to my requirements by a lovely girl in America). $60 including shipping from the States from PrettyThingsByJenni.

Our incredible wedding video by The Story of Us

We’re a little bit in love with our wedding video and very happy to share it as so many of you have sent well wishes and asked about our day.

Jen + Damian from The Story of Us on Vimeo.

We had a beautiful day, full of love and smiles. We honestly wouldn’t change a thing. So many times we looked around and said to each other: “Can this really be our wedding?!”

Tom and Kate (who also designed our invites) from The Story of Us captured and edited our day so well. We are thrilled! We almost didn’t get a videographer but we are so glad we squeezed it into our budget, especially as my sister wasn’t able to come from the UK. I remember asking lots of married friends in the run-up if they had any regrets about their own wedding (in case I’d missed something important!). Time and again they told me they wished they’d worn a veil and they wish they’d had a videographer. I’m so glad I had both! As much as we love our photos too, the film is such a lovely keepsake and one day we hope to show it to our kids!

Celebrating my first year of full-time blogging

This week marks a year since I was made redundant from my magazine job and decided to give blogging a go as a job. I’ll be honest with you; I wasn’t confident it would work out and be sustainable long-term but I knew I had to give it a go. It was a now or never moment. All the usual clichés, like at least I could say I tried, even if it didn’t work out. I think having a wedding to pay for (which was on Saturday and was the best day of my life so far WITHOUT A DOUBT) spurred me on, as did my usual steely determination and my supportive fiance (now husband), friends and family. It has been hard work but boy, has it been enjoyable and a brilliant, challenging, rewarding learning curve. Today I am so proud of how well Interiors Addict is doing as a one-year-old business and I want to thank you all, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, for reading it, because without you I’d be nowhere!

Here’s to many more years of full-time blogging!

The reality of a reno: The Interiors Addict & Nest Designs Palm Beach apartment project

By Emma Blomfield

As we prepare to reveal the finished Palm Beach Apartment project (a joint project between Interiors Addict and Nest Designs) this Thursday, stylist Emma Blomfield tells us about the less glamorous reality behind the scenes of a top-to-bottom reno.

The Palm Beach Project hasn’t been without drama. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you will have seen a few of the issues that have arisen!

Firstly, the tenants in the apartment when it sold weren’t the tidiest, so the kitchen, bathroom and carpets had seen a lot of wear and tear. We got to work repainting and giving the apartment a bit of a facelift; that was relatively drama-free apart from the fact that the light switch cover plates were apparently imported from Europe so there were none anywhere in the country that would fit for us to replace them! We also soon realised once the tenants’ furniture was removed, that the carpets would need more than a steam clean so they were ripped up and replaced with gorgeous sisal in a chocolatey colour.

Jen’s first Facebook for business workshops open for bookings

Due to massive demand, I’m going to start running regular social media for small business workshops in Sydney and the first two will take place on Thursday 28 November and Thursday 5 December 2013.

The 2.5-hour workshops, Taking Facebook for Business out of the Too-Hard Basket, cost $295 to include a light supper. They will take place in Surry Hills from 6.30-9pm. I usually charge $200 per hour for one-on-one work so take advantage of a much lower price in a group situation which is still small enough to be intimate.

Save the date for the first 7 Vignettes Meetup with Belle’s Steve Cordony and BoConcept

I’m so excited! Only seems a couple of weeks ago (probably because it was) that a few members of our 7 Vignettes Instagram community asked if we could perhaps have a meet up. Like, in real life. And now, I’m delighted to announce it’s happening on Friday 23 August.

Belle's Steve Cordony
Belle’s Steve Cordony

Judging by the buzz and the sense of the community we have online, I can only imagine how fun it might be to meet some of you in person! What’s more, Belle’s interior designer editor, the hugely talented stylist Steve Cordony, will be doing a demonstration on how to style vignettes. Learn from the master!

This is all made possible thanks to our friends at Danish furniture store BoConcept and the event is taking place at its stunning Crows Nest showroom in Sydney, with support from Belle. On the night there’ll be food and drink, fabulous goodie bags, and a live styling competition, which you can choose to take part in.

My winter warmer picks for The Home and a stunning country photoshoot

I was delighted when The Home asked me to pick some of my favourite products for a special winter warmer sale (starting today) and to join them on a photoshoot on location to bring them to life. Isn’t the end result stunning? I’m so in love with this clever photo!

the home winter warmer interiors addict 1

I headed straight to some of my favourite places, like Cadrys rugs and Have You Met Miss Jones to pick some cosy and colourful items. I’ve always loved the look of layered rugs but never tried this in my own home so it was fun to pick several to work together. I think this shoot goes to show that mix and match can totally work, and it’s all about contrast and texture. And how about that lamp? I’m buying one of those babies for myself!

the home winter warmer interiors addict

As for these beautiful images, a LOT of hard work and talent went into them behind the scenes, which I got to watch, but cannot take any credit for (apart from putting the flowers in the vase and making the tea for the cup on the tray…)! Joining me at the gorgeous property in the Hunter Valley were The Home’s stylist Marj Silva, photographer Lisa Zhou and buyer Emma Blomfield (also stylist at Nest Designs). They made that picture happen, and no, it really isn’t glamorous! Unless of course you count climbing on scaffolding and holding boards up on the other side of windows to stop pesky sun rays coming through and spoiling the shot glamorous!

Introducing my new blog, Appliance Addict

Appliance-Addict-Logo_LowRes

I’ve been (annoyingly) hinting at it for a little while and today I’m delighted to reveal that my new blog is all about home appliances. A sister site to this one, for those of you who are also interested in the latest gadgetry for your lifestyle (and to save annoying those who aren’t by keeping it separate), you now have Appliance Addict too. We have a great launch competition to win a Bodum BISTRO stand mixer in a colour of your choice.

I’ve been wanting to launch a new site for some time, it just took a little while to work out the perfect little sister for Interiors Addict (exteriors definitely aren’t my forté!). That’s the beauty of the online world and indeed self-employment; if you have an idea you can just go for it and move quickly. I’ve had some wonderful support from my friends and my web developer behind the scenes, for which I’d like to thank them. They know who they are. When you work on your own it’s great to have people to bounce ideas off and to get excited with you.

Welcome to Appliance Addict!

Hi there and welcome to Appliance Addict! If you love the latest gadgets and home appliances, you’ve come to the right place. If you want things explained in a straight talking way without too much technical jargon, this is the site for you. Appliance Addict is brought to you by Jen Bishop, the blogger behind the successful Interiors Addict and Damian Francis, who has years of experience writing about consumer technology. Between them they have two decades of journalism experience (and now they feel old)!

Jen bishop Damian Francis Appliance Addict

Jen knew many of her readers at Interiors Addict would also love to read about the latest coffee machines, stand mixers and vacuums but didn’t want to alienate those who just wanted the gorgeous rooms, furniture and homewares. So it made sense to set up this sister site. Here you’ll find appliances that help make life easier and more fun, that help keep your house clean, your caffeine levels up, your smoothies smooth, your food cooked and your bread toasted!

Zanui first birthday event with Shaynna Blaze

Yesterday I attended the first birthday celebration event for online furniture store Zanui in Sydney, where Shaynna Blaze was special guest.

zanui

It really doesn’t seem a whole 12 months since I was at Zanui’s launch event! The vast warehouse-style space of Simmer on the Bay in Sydney was decked out in products available to buy on the site, all beautifully styled. Guests included media and suppliers, as well as X-Factor winner Samantha-Jade Gibbs and Guy Sebastian’s wife Jules, both of whose homes have recently been furnished by Zanui with a little styling help from my good friend Emma Blomfield at Nest Designs (pictured with Shaynna and I in the photo above).

Living with an interiors addict (by my fiancé)

In a very brave move, today I gave my fiancé Damian the chance to blog about what it’s like living with me. I must be crazy…

damian

I used to have a collection of interiors books which I kept in my Ikea Expedit bookcase in my bedroom. I was quite proud of them, from Terence Conran’s Storage to collections on small spaces. Sydney property prices being what they are, I was realistic about the size of my first property. I felt like I was in touch with interiors. An interest beat out only by Formula 1… and cars… and travel… and planes… OK, it was a distant fifth, but just go with me here.

In the middle of 2010 (I think – the last few years have been a bit of a blur), I moved in with Jen. We lived in a small two-bedroom Mosman apartment next to the local school. Handy if you had kids. We don’t. I had it in my mind that I was going to turn that apartment around and add New York and Paris inspired minimalist touches that would revolutionise what was quite a bland little pad (Jen hadn’t been there long enough to put her mark on it).

How clueless I was (and arguably still am).

My own home in a magazine. Eeek!

Having my own apartment photographed for a magazine is probably one of the scariest things I have ever done! The fear of being judged! Agh!

The interview was done and the pictures taken months ago, so I’d almost forgotten about it, until I spotted Northside magazine today. I have to say I breathed a sigh of relief. Although my highly self critical eye hates how the carpet looks in the bedroom photo, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

If you live on Sydney’s north shore, pick up a copy!
