Pantone Colours of the Year 2021: ‘Ultimate Gray’ & ‘Illuminating’

In a year that has been punctuated by highs and lows, light and shade, it’s little surprise that the Pantone Colour(s) of the Year for 2021 are comprised of a bright lemon yellow and a rather safe shade of grey. A response to the pandemic, Pantone describes the duo as “a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”

Unashamedly optimistic, ‘Illuminating’ is a sunny shade of yellow sparkling with vivacity while ‘Ultimate Gray’ is a solid and dependable earthy shade designed to quietly assure while encouraging composure, steadiness and resilience.

See how Jen styled her home with Freedom’s spring/summer range

Sponsored by Freedom

Is anyone else getting excited about spring being around the corner? After months stuck inside with the heating on, keeping a newborn (and his parents!) warm, I can’t wait to be able to throw open the doors and windows and smell the fresh air! Like many Australians, I love switching up my decor for the warmer months to make everything a bit brighter and more relaxed. This winter, we’ve been rocking a grey and gold colour scheme but I’m ready for something a little more colourful and fun for the next few months so I was excited to have a play with some of Freedom’s latest homewares at my place (I think this might just be the first time I’ve given readers a look inside this home too!).

freedom shoot 3

There is no shortage of sunshine yellows in the latest range which instantly say summer! Such a happy hue! And even though it’s getting warmer, I still like to keep texture in my interiors. The absolute easiest and most cost-effective way to do this is through a mix ‘n match collection of cushions. You can see from my picks (all of those pictured are from Freedom, from $34.95 to $49.95) that there’s plenty of different materials and the knitted and quilted looks are my favourites.

The simple decorative turquoise and yellow metal ornaments on the table (just $9.95 and $4.95, BARGAIN!) are a great way to tie in the colours from the cushions and throw and very on trend. Likewise, this fab rug introduces little pops of colour without being over the top. There are a lot of same-same rugs on the market and this one’s a real standout and a generous size (160x230cm).

Your home shouldn’t be a show home, but it should rather make you smile and feel comfortable and relaxed. When my home’s feeling just right, I love opening the door at the end of a busy day!

I found it really liberating to introduce so much colour into my home. Maybe being a new mum has got me more used to brights and made me a little more fun?! What do you think of this look? Sebastian loves it 😉

Bandhini’s new collection: a riot of colourful cushions inspired by American glamour

It’s a big change from Bandhini Homewear Design’s usual mix of neutrals and textures but this latest collection is no less beautiful. I saw the cushions for myself last month and they really are stunning.

Designer Tai Schaffler admits she was nervous about the change. “But it was time for us to get out there and positively surprise our clients. We still have some beautiful classic black and beiges this year (we wouldn’t be Bandhini if we didn’t). The response so far has been incredible. There has been a lot of love for our yellow and velvet cushions.”

The collection, which was shot at the Mary McDonald-designed LUXE Hotel in LA, has been inspired by the cultural differences between America, where the products have been sold since 2010, Australia, where everything is designed, and India, where it is made.

How to pick the right paint colours for your home

By Wendy Rennie

The best way to begin to work with colour in your home is to enjoy the experience and be prepared to take a risk.

A folder of imagery you like is a really good way to start to find what you naturally gravitate to and then you can begin to make colour schemes around your style aesthetic and your colour preferences.

Tips for changing up your interiors for summer, by homewares buyer Korryn Bentley

Sponsored by Freedom

Are you a seasonal decorator? Do you like to change things up around your home for the cooler and warmer months? I spoke to Freedom homewares buyer and experienced trendspotter Korryn Bentley about giving your home a fresh look for summer.

So, I think we all want to know how to change things up without spending a fortune, right? Korryn’s trick? “Be brave in mixing things up. Without going out and buying a whole new room of accessories, firstly see what can be shuffled around the house. Empty the room of accessories, and then redecorate with your existing pieces. Can your cushions in your bedroom be moved to your living space with perhaps just a little investment to tie it all together, such as some fresh new colours or prints? Sometimes just one new cushion or throw can bring a different element in and change the look completely. It doesn’t have to be expensive!”

She also likes to bring out all her practical vases and vessels that often live in her cupboards and make a conscious effort to fill them with flowers she grabs from the garden on her way home from her morning walk, or some cheap and cheerful blooms from the fruit and veg shop if your garden is bare!

Brighten up your home with Country Road’s new Spring collection

Spring is in the air. Ok, it’s still decidedly chilly but work with me here. Wishful thinking! The latest Country Road homewares have just hit stores and they’re zesty and beautiful.

Isn’t this yellow chevron throw ($199) to die for? I’d love to see it used with the grey cushions (from $39.95 each) above. Grey is going nowhere. If there is such thing as a new black, it’s grey! If you love yellow too, check out the yellow and white broad striped Stevie bed linen while you’re in store.
