Three Birds Renovations: dated cottage to curvacious family home

Utilising space, championing storage, and building a home fit to last are vital elements to consider for families looking to renovate and modernise their homes. These factors were key when the Three Birds undertook a renovation for two of their followers, Cath and Sarah, and their sons, Chaise and Addison, in their latest project, “Contemporary Cottage”.

Situated in the historic town of Windsor NSW, this cottage hosted features that were slightly outdated and didn’t offer the much-needed space for a family whose two boys were growing. Finding ways to open up the internal rooms and make the most of the space within the existing footprint of the home by rethinking spaces and adding interesting niches and secret storage, Erin, Bonnie and Lana were able to transform this tight home into a spacious family retreat.

One of the standout ways they created more space was through the clever use of curves that can instantly enhance the flow of different rooms, while still defining the different spaces. As the home already had quite a lot of original curved features, such as corner walls in the corridor, it made sense to pay respect to the more fluid and softer style and embrace it in their new design.

To modernise the living area and reveal the space’s full potential, the decision was made to knock down the wall extending the living room space into a dining area “We’re massive fans of open-plan living for families and in a home of this size, removing a wall to increase living space makes a world of difference,” says Erin.

“Once this wall was down, the rest of the changes were cosmetic. This is the perfect example of a cosmetic reno and what can be done on a smaller, more achievable scale with less budget but big impact,” Erin adds.

To differentiate between the two rooms without losing that sense of flow, an arch wall was incorporated using Gyprock Flexible plasterboard. “We’re really happy with how these rooms turned out,” says Lana. “The lounge room is my favourite room in the whole house. The arched wall beautifully frames the dining area and automatically injects versatility into the property. The space is now multi-functional, offering rooms to entertain or relax.”

Space saving and storage was a special request from homeowners Cath and Sarah, so inclusions such as multi-purpose seating were a no brainer for the designer trio. Underneath the curved arch wall, they built a large double-sided bench seat which offered not only additional seating for both rooms but also provided plenty of storage room inside.

To marry the curved style throughout the house, the bathroom features include a rounded mirror, shower screen and stunning recessed arch. Perfect for extra storage and display space, recesses are great if there is the wall cavity space to fit them in.

“In the master ensuite, we created a curved recess shelving unit using Gyprock Flexible and finished with a Talostone engineered stone benchtop, delivering a high-end look that also provides a gorgeous nook for special pieces,” says Bonnie.

An important element they needed to tackle in the renovation was noise reduction. The cottage is located on a busy commuter road, up from a Royal Australian Air Force base. Couple this with two young children who love to play, and a solution for better acoustics and blocking out external noise was required.

Gyprock Superchek plasterboard was selected as the interior wall lining due to its sound resistant qualities, to reduce both the noise coming from outside and the noise transmission between the rooms inside the house.

This renovation shows how rethinking your floor plan and using creative design to open up rooms can really change the way you live in your house, and allows your home to grow as your family does.

Paint trends 2021: Haymes Paint announces tranquil new palettes

Haymes Paint has launched its Volume 14 colour library, with new shades designed to reflect the shifting home trends in the wake of this tumultuous year.

Calm Mind palette

Embrace is inspired by the concept of embracing the ever-changing and unexpected challenges of the current world, and finding solace within the home space through colour. The movement is characterised by tones that elicit comfort and reassurance, aimed to create nurturing environments as a respite from the – often overwhelming – uncertainty that has defined our lives recently.

Calm Mind: Shell Pink

Comprising of three unique colour palettes: Grounded, Calm Mind and Happy Home, the range features hues that have been crafted to reflect the natural world, and produce a calm and joyful interior; attitudes that are expected to be a staple of the paint trends predicted for 2021.

Colour and concept manager, Wendy Rennie, says: “This year’s colour release has been interesting to put together as the world and climate we live in has changed dramatically.

Grounded: Arboretum

“The current focus on wellbeing is more important than ever and using colour as a way of connecting us to emotions and improving the environments we are in will help people to make an impact where it counts most, showing us that home truly is where the heart is.”

Grounded

The grounded palette draws inspiration from the earthy tones of the natural world, offering an escape from the speed and stress of our everyday lives. Its rich colours range from deep tones of ink blue to warm sandy neutrals and olive greens, emulating the calming force of the ocean, the earth and forest.

Grounded: Rubicon

These colours promote the creation of spaces within our home that reinforce this important connection to nature, and the sense of serenity and “groundedness” that will act as central tenets of 2021 interior design trends.

Calm Mind

Despite what is going on in the world around us, by looking inwards we can attempt to recapture our innate sense of calm and peace. The focus of this palette is to restore balance and inspire harmony, through emulating a “spa retreat” feel within the home. Soothing tones of creamy green and blue blend with muddied peach, pink and rusts to create a tranquil fusion of colour that nutures the mind and soul.

Calm Mind palette

The new normal is to look for ways to promote self-care and relieve stress within environments you can control, and the Calm Mind palette was created to highlight just this; the power that the intentional choice of colour can have in creating a tranquil living space.

Happy Home

The Happy Home palette encapsulates a relaxed approach to interiors by introducing an uplifting array of tones and hues created to promote joy. Bold blues, rusty reds and pops of bright yellow bring a sense of fun and hope back into our homes.

Happy Home palette

The palette inspires interiors that are characertised by quirky styling, bold colour blocking and smack of zesty exuberance. This theme is all about youthful design elements and injecting energy into spaces to reinvigorate the senses.

Kitchen design: 5 important things to consider

As the heart of the home, to gather, entertain and unwind, kitchen design is something that can make or break a home. A well-designed kitchen should not only look great but also be functional.

With so many elements to consider, the kitchen can be one of the most challenging rooms when it comes to renovating or building. Porter Davis Homes interior designer, Koraly Fasone, shares her top five tips when it comes to kitchen design.

1. Invest in planning

Like all elements of design, planning is key. First, consider the key functions of your kitchen.

“The kitchen isn’t just a space for cooking,” says Koraly, “It’s a place to share meals, gather as a family, entertain, or even be used as a place for the kids to do their homework while dinner is on the way. It’s so important to consider all the different ways the space will be used.”

Koraly loves using island benches, which are extremely versatile across all times of the day, whether that be early breakfasts, after-school homework, or evening social gatherings.

She says, “If you’re thinking about installing an island, measure and mark up a space on the existing floor for the role you want it to play. Will it include a cooktop, sink, appliances, powerpoints, or just be a free workspace? Islands don’t even have to be permanent fixtures – if you’re working with a small space, consider a movable bench or trolley for instant storage and flexible space.”

2. Embrace lighting

Natural lighting is crucial in the kitchen as it not only creates warmth but a seamless connection to the outdoors. If your kitchen can’t cater to a window, Koraly suggests considering a skylight, or maximising the windows in the surrounding rooms to help that morning sun shine through.

She also notes the vital nature of task lighting. “Position lighting to specified areas, such as beside the cooktop, over the island bench, or above the sink,” Koraly says. “This will not only help these areas function better, but can also be used to highlight feature areas of your kitchen.”

3. Storage is a hero

“Well-considered storage is imperative to effective kitchen design,” says Koraly. “Make your space work for you by grouping items that are used for the same purpose or at the same time.”

Storage spaces need to be easy to access and practical to what is – or will be – stored there (think both height and depth), and nearby to where those items will be used.

Some of Koraly’s storage suggestions include:

  • Group all breakfast items together like tea, coffee, mugs, bread basket and toaster
  • Keep utensils, pots and pans within reach of the cooktop
  • Store dinner plates close to the dining area
  • The addition of storage systems inside cabinetry can quickly increase your storage capacity and practicality
  • Drawers will generally give a better vision of what is stored inside, and are great for storing smaller items
  • Consider built-in rubbish bins and pull-out racks, baskets, and dividers

4. The three F’s: Fixtures, Finishes and Fittings

“When we move into the fine details of fixtures, finishes and fittings, the choices and decisions can be overwhelming,” says Koraly. “If this is you, revisit your brief and remember how you want your kitchen to function, and the aesthetic character you wish to achieve.”

Appliances:

Appliances all have their functional and visual elements of appeal, so consider how each appliance’s technology, capacity and price tag fits in with your household. While they may not need to take centre stage visually, their size and function need accommodated your requirements.

Hardware:

The sleek look of handless cabinetry isn’t for all, and for those who love the application of a cabinet handle, the choices are endless. With the ability to tie in finishes to tapware, appliances, and décor accessories, handles easily become a main focal point and accessory to a well designed kitchen.

Benchtops and cabinetry:

You can achieve the look you’re going for with any price point. Natural stone is a beautiful material, but can be substituted for reconstituted stone. Similarly, timber or 2Pack finish cabinets can be subbed for laminate. Consider the functionality of your splashback; stone or glass is easier to clean than tiles, but tiles will enable you to introduce a feature pattern, colour or texture to the space.

5. Finishing touches

“As well as being functional, kitchens can also be the perfect place to introduce character into your home, particularly as it’s one of the most utilised rooms in the home,” Koraly says. “Inject colour and texture through fixtures, fittings and simple styling touches. Think about complementary artwork, ambient lighting, feature hardware, decorative items and unique pieces of furniture to bring the space full circle. Ultimately, make it your own and have fun with it!”

Reno shopping online has its advantages: here’s 3

The online world not only provides endless inspiration for our renos, it also allows us to purchase almost anything we could possibly want with the click of a button. Traditionally, planning and shopping for a renovation has been an offline process, but there are reasons why the online experience is here to stay.

“Traditionally more offline projects like renovations have required long days spent stuck in traffic driving from showroom to showroom in search of the perfect tap or rug,” says Elise Pride from The Blue Space, online bathroom renovation experts. “But as more suppliers, retailers and renovation specialists have moved online, this is no longer the case. The technological advancements of the last decade have meant that inspiration is truly at our fingertips!”

Elise explains that achieving a renovation you are proud of has never been easier, with savvy Australians turning to online specialists to save valuable time and money when designing and building their dream homes.

Here are just a few of the biggest benefits the online renovation experience provides, according to Elise.

1. A world of choice

“How much time do we all have these days?” asks Elise. “In days past you could spend weekend after weekend visiting multiple showrooms to pull a look together. Online shopping gives you the freedom and ability to pull a look from multiple suppliers, read customer FAQs, check the compatibility of your products and make returns easier!”

“For example,” she says, “choosing the right colour scheme has become a huge consideration in bathroom renos recently – just watch an episode of The Block to see what I mean!”

Elise suggests that to really make your colour scheme sing, you want to match all the tapware and accessories to a particular brand and finish, and do the same thing with items like vanities and shavers, to give the room a cohesive look.

Here, the benefits of an online reno become clear, explains Elise: “Buying online provides you with so much more choice and variation than a traditional showroom. You can often filter according to colour, room style, specification, and brand, allowing you to easily browse products that meet your brief, and pull together the perfect look, all from one trusted retailer!”

Rather than waiting at home for multiple deliveries, which can be painful, getting a single delivery with all your bathroom gear on board can be a huge time (and environment) saver.

2. Finding the cream of the crop is easy

Shopping with a trusted online retailer also ensures that you can purchase high value products with confidence, Elise explains, allowing you to make the right decisions and end up with quality products that last.

“Many sites include product reviews from other renovators and buyers, that can give you great insight into the quality of a product, and chances are, if others are happy with it you will be too!” says Elise. “Brand testimonials are another great online resource that allow you to gauge whether your chosen retailer or supplier will deliver you a trusted and quality product.”

Elise suggests choosing a trusted online retailer who has positive reviews and provides genuine, long-lasting warranties. This will provide you with extra peace of mind, knowing support is there if anything were to go wrong.

3. Great customer service

“Gone are the days when businesses set up online in order to avoid dealing with customers,” Elise says. “Today, online retailers offer live chat and round the clock customer service support that is designed to fit around your busy lifestyle.”

Australia is full of online specialists that can not only help with style advice, but also ensure all the technical aspects are accounted for when it comes to renovating your home or bathroom.

“At The Blue Space, we know that renovating your bathroom is a huge investment, and involves running water and electricity,” Elise adds, “so having the right team of advisors in place is a vital part of everything we do.

“From online showrooms that make your shopping experience a breeze, to online concierge services and expert product selectors, the online experience has now developed to put customer service front of mind with retailers committed to ensuring you are happy with the end result.”

Refresh your home and garden this spring: expert ideas

Analysis by all you can read magazine subscription app Readly has found that, based on what we are reading, Aussies love rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into renovations and the garden. We’re making, crafting, and learning to DIY! The stats show that there has been a 242% increase in the readership of the home and renovation magazine category. That’s huge!

With spring in the air, this is only set to increase as we will be pulling up our sleeves and getting stuck into our homes a little more.

So, what can we start thinking about this spring? We have rounded up some advice from the experts.

For our gardens:

Tammy Huynh, horticulturist and owner of Leaf an Impression says that if you have been thinking of starting a veggie patch, now is the time to do it. Here are her tips:

  1. You will need at least 6-to-8 hours of sun (depending on what you’re growing) and access to a garden bed or pots. If your soil is hard to dig, it’s likely to be made up of a lot of clay. You can help ‘soften’ the soil by adding soil conditioners like compost, aged manure, blood and bone, and gypsum. If it’s too difficult to dig, consider a raised garden bed and fill with a good quality mix from your nursery.
  2. For most parts of the country, now is the time to sow: tomatoes, beans, eggplants, zucchinis, chillies, sweetcorn, silverbeet, squash, leafy greens like lettuce, rocket, spinach, bok choy, endive and herbs. Always check plant labels, especially on seed packets, to understand when to plant in your area. Just because you can buy tomato seeds in winter, it does not mean you should sow them!
  3. To maximise your harvest, ensure you prepare the soil well beforehand. This includes adding organic matter like compost or aged manures. My go-to is always homemade compost and handfuls of dynamic lifter (which is made up of composted chook manure). Fork all the ingredients into soil and blend in well. Sow seeds or plant seedlings, ensuring there is sufficient spacing between plants, otherwise this will cause problems with air flow and sunlight later down the track. As plants are growing, feed with a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for veggies.
  4. For leafy greens, you can start harvesting quite early. Always remove the outer leaves first and take a handful at a time. Pick fruiting veggies (tomatoes, zucchinis, beans) when ripe, otherwise pests, birds, or other critters will quite happily help themselves. To help extend your harvest, sow successive seeds or seedlings, but only grow as much as you will eat, otherwise you end up wasting food and precious resources.
  5. Veggies are growing plants, so they also need to be watered quite regularly, especially during the hotter months. Watering early in the morning is ideal, as the plants take up the water before it evaporates. You can also mulch plants with lucerne or sugar cane mulch, which will help conserve soil moisture.

For our clutter:

Jo Carmichael, from All Sorted Out, gets you started on this with four easy steps:

  1. The wardrobe: It’s best to start with our own wardrobe and clothing edit first, before moving onto rifling through the kids or partner’s things. Move seasonal items, heavy jackets, sweaters, and wintery boots up to the top shelf. Bring down the summer items – placing them within easy reach.
  2. The entrance or Mudroom: Store and remove the items which have been left here the last few months. Maybe the numerous rain jackets could be rotated out, and the straw hats could hang ready for sunny days outside. A fresh pump pack of sunscreen to match the hand sanitiser should now be stationed here. Tidy the shoe basket – are there old sneakers here no longer worn, that could be tossed? A decluttered entrance ready for spring is just what you need.
  3. Pet paraphernalia: Dogs, cats and other beloved animals certainly come with their fair share of equipment. Now is a good time to check their blankets, bedding, where the food is stored ensuring it all smells fresh and looks welcoming. Glance at the leads, brushes, and toys – maybe the worn out ones could be replaced!
  4. The pantry: With Covid-19 we have all been working and cooking from home more than usual. The hot weather can affect the freshness of some pantry items. Get the condiments, sauces and spices out of the pantry, check they are still fresh, wipe bottles and lids clean if in good order, or toss – making a note on the shopping list of what needs replenishing. Wipe the pantry shelf clean before returning the items.

Freshening up the interior of our home:

Jane Thomson, interior designer, says, “With naughty Covid still impinging on our lives, we’re spending more time in our abodes. Now more than ever, we are bound to make our surroundings as yummy and as nurturing as possible.”

Here are Jane’s insights into kitchen makeovers that won’t cost the earth:

  1. Obviously the easiest way to refresh your kitchen is to paint your existing cupboards and drawers. Painting gives maximum impact and is inexpensive. These days there are so many products available from your local Bunnings or hardware store to transform surfaces, in order for you to prepare the surfaces and paint over most door and drawer materials.
  2. Changing your kitchen handles is super easy and takes no time. Look for brands that have gorgeous accent handles and some practical door and drawer pulls. A personal brand favourite of mine is LO & CO.
  3. Re-tiling your splashback is also one of the easiest and inexpensive ways of zjooshing your look. Mosaics, subway tiles, stone tiles all look amazing. Alternatively, use tile paint, which is one of the cheapest ways to reinvigorate your tired look.
  4. Adding a humble pendant or pendants to an island bench can also change the overall look of your kitchen. Some cheeky concealed lighting to the underside of your top kitchen cabinets also looks amazing. Lighting is everything.
  5. Another way to zjoosh your kitchen look is to remove a door from your top cupboards and replace with open shelving. Style with plants, cookbooks, and artwork that can sit easily on a shelf.
  6. New faucets or mixers also add a quick and easy way to freshen your look, especially brass and black fittings.
  7. If you have a little extra budget in the kitty, you could also look at installing a new benchtop.

Jane also points out that when you’re looking to freshen up the rest of your home with paint or accessories, the colours of the season are soft whites, greens, coral and peacock blue or green.

Smart home devices: 7 everyday life-changing gadgets

Our homes are our sanctuaries; spaces where we can rest and spend joyful moments with our families. Lately, homes have become even more important, with many of us now spending most of our time here. Though it’s convenient for many, working from home can come at a price; it’s easy to let things go and get buried in an endless pile of work and home duties.

Amazon Echo Dot

Thankfully, the field of home technology has evolved a lot in the last few decades, and we can access all kinds of gadgets and devices that help make our domestic life easier.

Home improvement expert and blogger Jane Wilson shares seven of the best clever home gadgets which will help you manage your household and stay on top of every task.

1. Alexa by Amazon

“Alexa is a top-of-the-field piece of technology that you can control by voice to help you with tasks around your home,” says Jane. “It’s the perfect home assistant and it can help you and your family in many different ways.”

Amazon Echo Dot

“You can use it to stay connected to your loved ones, no matter where they are located. You can find answers to all your questions via the voice-activated online search. You can also shop online, make appointments easily and control all kinds of devices around your home, including thermostats, light switches and some modern appliances,” Jane continues.

Amazon offers a range of Echo devices for you to choose from. Jane’s favourite is the Echo Dot, which has a handy clock display.

2. iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum

“Anyone with pets, children, or simply the time-poor, would appreciate the help a robot vacuum provides,” Jane says. “Vacuuming mess the standard way usually takes a lot of time and effort.”

The Roomba Robot Vacuum, created by iRobot, rolls around on hardwood and carpeted floors, gathering crumbs, lint, pet hair and anything else it finds on the way. It has built-in sensors that allow it to avoid bumping into walls and furniture.

“You can easily control the Roomba from your phone and program it when to start and stop. Once the robot vacuum is done with the chore, it automatically returns it to its charging dock. You can also connect it to your Alexa device for voice control,” says Jane.

(Our very own Jen has one of these and swears by it with two little boys at home, bringing in dirt and dropping crumbs on the daily.)

3. Eight Smart Mattress

We spend around a third of our lives in our beds, so the quality of the mattress is very important for our comfort and quality of sleep.

“Eight Smart Mattress is the smartest mattress you can find on the market currently,” explains Jane. “It’s a 10-inch (around 25cm) thick mattress which is constructed of four layers of foam to ensure the best support for your whole body during sleep.”

It also has a built-in technology cover, and a small device that can track the sleep patterns for both you and your partner. The cover sets personalised temperatures for each side of the bed, and its alarm uses gentle vibrations to wake you up without any sound.

4. iRobot Braava Jet robot mop

“Another genius creation by iRobot!” says Jane. She recognises that mopping can be just as daunting as vacuuming, and therefore the Braava Jet’s ability to wash your floors is a true game-changer for her.

Braava Jet

“It sounds unbelievable,” she says, “but this gorgeous machine is equipped with a jet spray that dispenses water and detergent, vibrating cleaning heads that get even stubborn dirt out of grout, and all kinds of sensors, which allow you to mop without damaging walls or furniture.”

(Jen has this one too, and you can find her review here.)

5. Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

“With amazing inventions from Ring, such as the Video Doorbell 3 Plus, you won’t have to run across the house to see who is at the door,” says Jane. “Just tap on the button on your smartphone app and you’ll be able to see who it is, and even talk to them. All thanks to the small video doorbell mounted to the outside part of your front door.”

Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

6. eero 3-Pack Mesh WiFi Router

Everyone in Australia knows how difficult it can sometimes be to find a decent Internet connection. Even if your WiFi is great in one room, it may completely disappear in the next. Jane explains that this is because the walls of your house can limit the signal from the router.

eero Mesh Wireless Router

“eero will make your entire family happy by providing the same quality of WiFi in every room,” she says. “It’s a genius device, which replaces your router and delivers a high quality WiFi connection to a very broad range – up to 460 sqm. It’s compatible with every Australian internet provider and setting up the three small boxes across the property takes only minutes.”

7. Airmega

“Not many people know, but indoor air is way more polluted than the air outdoors,” says Jane. “It’s the air stagnation and accumulation of dust that makes it so dangerous. Airmega can help solve that problem in a heartbeat. The device captures 99.97% of the particles that fly around in the air, like dander, dust, pollen and other allergens. It also has a sensor which measures the air quality in the house and takes immediate action if something is out of the norm.”

The Airmega can be controlled via an app on your phone or left on Smart Mode, which allows it to decide on its own how to adjust the speed of the fans.

What’s the smart device YOU swear by for YOUR home?

More than ever, people are concentrating on interior design, as the increased time indoors makes us reevaluate our living spaces, how they function and make us feel.

BROSA have seen sales grow by more than 180% since March, with contemporary designs like their Ada Swivel Chair being particularly popular. Even the brand’s Instagram followers have jumped 60% since the Australia-wide lockdown.

During this period, the way in which people shop has also fundamentally changed. BROSA firmly believe that the future is led by a “digital-first omni-channel strategy”. Originally existing solely as an online retailer, BROSA opened a Melbourne studio last year, and they opened their first walk-in showroom in Sydney last week.

“We’re focused on continuing our mission to change the furniture industry for the better, to grow our team with the very best talent, and to transform traditional furniture shopping,” says CEO and co-founder Ivan Lim.

The new Rosebery studio

This integration of the digital and the physical caters to the unique nature of each customer; some will turn online for inspiration, research, and to purchase, while others love to talk to a stylist in person – to see, touch and feel the products before transitioning to the digital sphere.

The new ‘Studio+’ in Sydney’s Rosebery, like its Melbourne counterpart, isn’t just another shop. While it showcases a wide range of practical design-led furniture, allowing customers to touch and sit on it, it’s complemented in-store by some of the innovations the digital brand is known for, including augmented reality. QR codes allow you to shop unassisted by scanning the code, and even being able to purchase on the spot.

Stylists are on hand to help you if you’d like. But if you’d rather just scan your own QR code, that’s cool too!

Visitors are invited to bring their moodboards and colour swatches, or simply come to be inspired. But if you can’t, or don’t want to, make it in, BROSA’s online services include virtual tours of the Sydney and Melbourne studios and, for a more personalised experience, virtual consults with a BROSA stylist. You can book online for a free 45-minute appointment that consists of working with you on your floorplans, ideal product selection, and inspiration.

Customers can also view products in 360 degrees and “view at home” through augmented reality – like a virtual test drive, that lets you see the pieces you’ve selected in a real-life context.

“Due to the shifting nature of the furniture industry, and the recently accentuated focus on crafting a beautiful and intentional living space, this digital-physical fusion is ideal for those who desire a fully immersive retail experience.”

Foodie Friday: Crispy sesame-crusted mushroom poke bowl

New research has revealed that everyday mushrooms really are a natural superfood and can be as effective as vitamin D supplements, as well as supporting immune function. Mushrooms are rich in bioactive compounds found not only in vegetables but also some meats, whole grains, and nuts, making them an extraordinary food source.

Prep/cook time: 35-40 minutes | Serves: 2

Ingredients:

Sesame-crusted mushrooms:

  • 200g button mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup white sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp black nigella seeds
  • 1/3 cup panko crumbs
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 egg
  • Dash of milk
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Poke bowl:

  • 2 cups pre-cooked brown rice
  • 1 bunch broccolini
  • 1/3 cup frozen edamame beans, defrosted
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 3/4 cup red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 small cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 4-5 radishes, thinly sliced
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced (white part only)

Dressing:

  • 1 tsp white miso paste
  • 3 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tsp peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil

Method:

  1. In a bowl, combine the sesame seeds, nigella seeds, panko crumbs and a pinch of sea salt, then stir to mix through.
  2. In another bowl whisk together the egg and a dash of milk with a fork.
  3. Heat up a deep sided saucepan filled with vegetable oil (3cm deep) to frying point (205⁰C). To test if it’s at the right temperature, add a pinch of panko crumbs; if the oil bubbles then it’s ready.
  4. Add the button mushrooms in batches to the whisked egg mixture, then roll them in the sesame/panko crumb mixture until they get an even crumb coating.
  5. In batches, add the mushrooms to the heated oil and fry, using tongs turn them over after the outer crumb turns a crispy golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Repeat the process until all of the mushrooms have been cooked. It is best to cook these in batches and not to overcrowd the saucepan.
  6. Blanch the broccolini and edamame in boiling water until the broccolini is cooked and crunchy and the edamame has changed to a bright green colour. Drain and set aside.
  7. To make the dressing combine the ingredients in a small jug, stir well to combine and to dissolve any miso paste lumps.
  8. To assemble the poke bowls start with a base of pre-cooked brown rice, follow by arranging the vegetables over the top and around the edges of the bowls. Finish by adding the crispy crumbed mushrooms in the centre and sprinkle over the thinly sliced shallots.
  9. Serve with the miso dressing poured over the top.

Note: this recipe includes peanuts. If you have nut allergies, please omit this ingredient.

Houseplants online: how to buy and sell them on Gumtree

There’s been an enormous revival in the popularity of houseplants. Previously relegated to the 1970s, indoor greenery has exploded back into fashion! Driven largely through the increased focus on wellness, and often seen styled beautifully on social media, cultivating your own indoor jungle oasis can seem daunting.

Image: Leaf Supply

But there are plenty of beautiful, healthy, and well-established plants that you can grab for a local bargain online. Or, alternatively, if you’ve become an expert propagator, you could look at selling your own plant babies!

Amanda Behere from Gumtree Australia shares the following advice:

Selling:

  1. Propagate plants: Think about any plants at home you could divide and propagate to sell separately – veggies, ferns and houseplants are great options! To propagate, just take a stem or healthy leaf clipping, place in clean water and give it extra sunlight – it usually grows strong healthy roots within a month. Succulents are a great option for this and very popular on site, with over 4,000 listings.
  2. Money does grow on trees: When your ferns or growers are due for a trim, don’t just throw their lengths in the bin – sell plants as cuttings or ‘off-cuts’ as some people enjoy buying them for the challenge, or want to buy clippings for a small price. This also helps someone else in their green thumbed adventure! Some examples here and here.
  3. Patience pays off: Mature plants can make some serious money. If you bought a cheap plant at the supermarket and it has matured into a beautiful home feature, it can be sold for more money. Many people want to buy ‘interiors-ready’ plants for styling, so you can sometimes double the price. See a larger plant here.
  4. Know your item value: Know the right price (or approximate price) for what you are selling. Simply search your plant type on Gumtree before posting to get your price right and this will increase your chances of selling!

Buying:

  1. Do your research: Dedicate time to research what’s out there to help you understand the average price of similar plants. Search by style and category and both new/used plants to see the best options for your budget.
  2. Ask questions: Get to know more about the plants by asking sellers questions about the species, their specific needs, and any questions you might have about its Gumtree description. It is also important to ask for images of the whole plant to ensure every part of it is healthy or as per its description.
  3. Keyword searching: The number of plants on Gumtree can be overwhelming, so to whittle down your options, make sure you search via keywords to find the exact plant you are looking for. If you search ‘plants’ in Gumtree over 16,000 listings pop up so be specific based on what you are looking for – for example searching ‘Philodendron’ brings up 300 listings, which is much easier to sift through!
  4. Package deal:  Some buyers will generally be selling more than one plant, so ask if they have anything else available and see if you can get a deal if you buy more than one.

Tips such as these are accessible to people of all skill levels; from those of you who are dedicated to cultivating a lush jungle paradise in your own home, to those of you who just want to add a few splashes of greenery to a room. Either way, finding the right plants for you and your home has never been easier.

From Coffs to Cali: Ex-Blockhead’s mid-century modern kitchen reno

Seasoned renovators Ash and Simon Vos are on a journey to transform their Coffs Harbour abode into a modern Californian dream home. As one half of The Block 2014 winning duo with his brother Shannon, Simon’s latest project with wife Ash has been one of the most challenging.

With Simon’s building skills and Ash’s keen eye for design, the pair have transformed a once small space into a large, liveable kitchen that takes inspiration from their stunning surroundings, with calming green tones and touches of mid-century modern that play into the home’s contemporary Californian elegance.

Ash says: “We are both really inspired by nature when it comes to design, and the view at our home has dictated so many of our colour choices. We wanted to feel connected to nature on the inside of the home just as much as the outside – we have a stunning north-facing deck that really captures the charm of the area. We definitely have a preference towards mid-century modern furnishings and finishes, and love the timeless appeal of the era.”

The couple share the top tips and tricks that enabled them to create the kitchen of their dreams.

Don’t be disheartened by a small space

“The most challenging aspect of our kitchen was making a small space feel large, and having the vision to plan for it when all the previous walls were still there!” says Ash. “We created space by moving the island bench towards the larger living area and creating a wider walkway between the back wall and the island. We also maximised storage by having an open pantry that is hidden from view, which allowed us to remove some cupboards in the original plans and have a timber shelf for styling and coffee mugs.”

Discuss your non-negotiables

Ash explains how she and Simon remained aligned with the feel they wanted to create for the kitchen, using wish lists to decide what the finished space would include.

“My wish list included a butler’s pantry, double door fridge, a dishwasher, and a wide oven. Simon wanted a water/ice dispenser in the fridge and a gas cooktop. We created our non-negotiables from our combined wish list!”

It’s all in the details

Ash and Simon’s kitchen looks out onto the Great Dividing Range, so their vision was for the kitchen to reflect this view.

“We opted for green tones for the cabinetry and other finishes which looks stunning against the landscape,” says Ash. “We chose muted tones for the hardware and appliance colours to give the space a luxurious feel while blending in a little with the concrete benchtops. We chose’kitkat’ sculptural tiles for the splashback, and a timber shelf which also adds some character to the space.”

Appliances matter more than you think

“We spent some time choosing appliances, I think it is one of the things most people get wrong in a kitchen,” Ash says. She and Simon actually built the cabinetry around the appliances they wanted, as opposed to finding appliances that worked with the cabinetry.

“For couples like us with little time,” Ash continues, “the appliances in a home can give you back time through integrated solutions like apps and customised settings. Appliances should add value to your life.”

Every kitchen needs a highlight

“The stand-out features in our kitchen include the Electrolux 681L dark stainless steel French door fridge. It’s the most high-tech fridge-freezer we’ve ever seen, you can monitor the temperature from your phone via an app,” Ash explains.

“We also love our custom benchtops that Simon poured. They add character to the space that a conventional manufactured benchtop couldn’t.”

Paint colour trends 2021: Wattyl forecast organic, reassuring tones

This year, the way in which the home functions has fundamentally altered, as it has played a more meaningful role than ever in our daily lives. Wattyl have reflected this in their newly-released 2021 colour forecast, which takes the form of four unique palettes, spanning a wide array of shades.

These predictions highlight the way in which curved or rounded shapes, soft textures and considered colour palettes have become the go-to options for creating a sense of calmness and serenity while also proving useful in establishing different areas within an open living space.

The richer, darker hues of the Shadowy Darks palette – Dark Dream, Black Hole, Deep Forest and Seductress – are luxurious and cocooning and create a mood of timeworn comfort, especially when teamed with textured wall panels such as Easycraft’s Ascot Vogue dado panel, velvets, corduroy and dark timbers. Shape and texture become the heroes!

Uplifting Lights, a collection of four beautifully dusted pastels – Snow Rose, Light Aqua, Cave and China Mauve – add a warmth and tactility to minimalist spaces and lend themselves to soft curves in furniture and detailing that are balanced with the geometric chevron profile on the main wall.

The tonal equality between hues such as Wattyl Snow Rose and Light Aqua inspire a balance between body and mind – the perfect combination for bedrooms.

Nourishing Earth Tones will be even more important in a post-Covid-19-world, their warm, nourishing plant-based colours helping us to reconnect with nature and the outdoors. Terracotta tones such as Wattyl Brandy Snap are given extra depth and visual interest when applied to a textured wall lining  and mirrored in furnishing textiles such as leather, linen and wool.

Other beautifully organic, earthy hues within the palette are Moccacino, Run Forest, Denim and Honey Honey.

Humble Whites – and minimalism in general – continue to reign supreme in many homes but the look is warming; becoming less pristine in both detail and styling.  Personality and emotion are introduced to this palette by virtue of authenticity, craft and history – attributes we crave in a post-Covid-19 world.  Materials such as timber, vegetable-dyed textiles and hand-made ceramics are key to the mix and create a mindful ambience, one of simplicity and purity.

Humble whites such as Wattyl Lushious White, Confetti Shower and Ice Volcano sit quietly – and comfortably – next to timber lined walls that imbue the space with a sense of authenticity and earthiness.

Paint can be such a wonderful way to transform a living space, and the use of curves, texture, and colour can be utilised in order to fundamentally shape an interior that is calming, nurturing and multi-functional.

Foodie Friday: Chocolate dipped shortbread

Today’s recipe, a lighter take on a classic cookie favourite, comes from Lakanto Australia. This shortbread is a buttery, light, and simply delicious snack for any coffee or high tea occasion. Lakanto Classic and Golden Monkfruit Sweeteners offer an all-natural substitute to sugar with 93% less calories.

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 12-16 minutes | Serves: 20 fingers

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter (diced into 2cm cubes)
  • 1 cup golden monkfruit sweetener
  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 1 tsp cornflour
  • ½ tsp vanilla essence
  • Sugar free chocolate

Method

  1. Mix the diced butter and monkfruit sweetener in a mixer using the paddle attachment and whip until soft and smooth (approx. 5 minutes).
  2. Add the cornflour and plain flour, and slowly mix on speed 1-3 until fully incorporated.
  3. Add in the vanilla essence and whip for 3 minutes on high (this will ensure a smooth and soft dough is created).
  4. Remove from the bowl and place mixture onto a surface dusted with flour. Leave to rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 150⁰C.
  6. Gently fold the mixture on the bench. It should have a silky feel. Roll out to the desired size and height.
  7. Cut the dough to the desired shape and gently place on the baking tray. Allow to rest for 10 minutes in the fridge (this will help it keep its shape while baking).
  8. Place the tray in the preheated oven for 12-16 minutes, depending on the thickness of the shortbread.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
  10. Melt the chocolate over a bowl of hot water until fully melted, then dip the shortbread into the chocolate and place on greaseproof paper until firm.

TIP: For a dryer shortbread, extend the cooking time by 3-4 minutes.

Designing children’s rooms: flexible spaces they won’t outgrow

Mum of two and founder of Incy Interiors Kristy Withers, knows first-hand how quickly children can grow and their tastes can change. While growth spurts can result in overhauling children’s wardrobes year on year, the interiors enthusiast shares five considerations parents should make to ensure their child’s bedroom stands the test of time.

1. Splurge on a larger bed

“If there is one furniture item that you are going to invest in, make sure it’s the bed!” says Kristy. “Investing in a high quality bed straight up can save you money in the long run. Of course, with a good quality bed you can hand it down to other children but if you really want to avoid having to upgrade your bed every few years and both your space and budget permit, consider purchasing a bigger bed from the beginning.”

Double beds are a great size for kids, not just because they give off the grown up vibes that kids crave, but you are almost guaranteed an upgrade won’t be required until they hit their mid-teens.

2. Choose convertible pieces wherever possible

When you are creating a space for a newborn, it is difficult to consider the functionality beyond those first few years, but there are some items that you can purchase that will still serve a purpose for your child as they grow. Kristy recommends looking for a change table that also doubles as storage.

“All of our Incy change tables either convert to a dresser or a bookcase so you can continue to use the product for many years to come,” she explains.

3. Keep sheets and linen plain

“I always recommend that people keep their sheets simple and stick with plain linen. It is not only difficult to ‘outgrow’ plain linen but a neutral, unpatterned colourway means décor can be interchanged without needing to overhaul every part of the room. It is much easier and more cost effective to update a bedroom with throws and cushions,” Kristy says.

Be sure to invest in quality bedding too – it’s essential for both comfort and assurance you’ll get to enjoy it (and not update it) for a while!

4. Think about smart storage solutions

Regardless of age, you’ll always need somewhere to clear the clutter! A neutral storage ottoman or trunk is perfect for this and can store anything from stuffed toys to books. Kristy loves ottomans in particular, as they double as a place to sit and always look great at the end of the bed.

5. Choose a plain, timeless colour for the walls

While it can be tempting to paint the walls in pastels for newborns, Kristy recommends keeping the walls in neutral tones that will stand the test of time. “Instead, add colour with removable wallpaper and decals,” she says. “There are so many great companies out there now that offer removable wallpaper and wall decals and they are a great way to set a theme or a room, but as they are removable, it’s only as permanent as you need it to be!”

A gender-neutral theme/colourway will ensure a bedroom’s longevity, but Kristy suggests complementing this with little personal touches, like artworks, drawings, mementos and precious keepsakes, turning your child’s bedroom their own personal haven. “Additionally,” she says, “updating the artwork allows personality to be injected, but it can be easily updated as your child grows and changes.”
