Decorating 101 Expert Tips Styling

Styling your home: getting the icing on the cake right!

Styling is what Emma Blomfield calls “the fun bit” of interiors! And it’s definitely the case that a few styling tricks can totally lift your space. We’re big on homes being unique reflections of the people who live in them, and styling has the power to give every home more personality.

Today, the Sydney-based stylist, designer and decorator, is sharing some of her top tips; things that everyone can have a go at, styling ideas you may not have thought of, and some simple rules to follow.

“It’s different to decorating as decorating consists of selecting the big ticket items like sofas, coffee tables, beds, sideboards and other larger furniture items,” says Emma, author of Home and Keeping House. “You can also have a lot of fun with decorating when choosing fabrics, timber tones and textures as well as actually placing the furniture out in the room. But styling is arranging the smaller, more moveable pieces. Think candles, books, trays, crystals, coasters, trinkets, boxes and other decorative items.”

Emma sees any flat surface as an excuse to “style up a storm”! It could be the top of a bar cart styled with attractive liquor bottles, a coffee table with a tray of nice decorative items or a hall table in the entry way with pretty trinkets and photo frames.

“A home with no deliberate styling is going to feel a little sterile, like no one lives there! The styling adds character and personality. It gives little nods to who lives there, where they’ve travelled and collected items from, or what they’ve been given for significant milestones in their lives.”

Get it right however, and Emma says your home will feel cosy, welcoming and intriguing. “You want your guests to come over and want to explore all the corners of your home because there are interesting things to look at everywhere. Those little elements tell stories and hold many amazing memories, ready to be recollected.”

Styling is also a great way to carry a theme from room to room, giving your home a more cohesive feel. “You don’t have to rely on a colour palette to do this,” Emma says. “For example, use trays to house some cute decorative items collected on your holiday to Paris in one room and then another tray in the next room with photos of your Paris trip so you carry your lovely memories into the other rooms of the house.”

While some people say it’s nothing more than fluffing cushions and not at all essential, Emma says styling is what sets your house apart from an Airbnb or rental property and shows that real people live there. “It’s an essential part of bringing a home together for its occupants. Those styling elements are often handed down to the next generation as heirlooms like teacups and saucers or little crystal figurines.”

So, do you need to call in a professional like Emma? “No! You just need to have an eye for collecting a few little meaningful things from your life. Most people can do that!”

So, where to start?

“Using trays to collate the trinket-y things really helps collate them all without the styling looking messy or unfinished. When styling a bedside table, a coaster for your water glass, a ring dish, an attractive box of tissues and a candle are all you need to create a pretty vignette,” Emma says.

“When creating a ‘shelfie’, use height and scale to create a cute display. Mix tall skinny objects with short squat objects so there’s some interest with the items on display and they aren’t all at the same height. Vary the textures too to create interest.”

You don’t need to go shopping for new decor either, although that’s always fun! “Look around your house for inspiration. You might find something in the back of your desk drawer that reminds you of the fun you had at university or a marble your son gave you when he was a child. They don’t have to be expensive items. In fact, often the cheapest items hold the most meaning and are therefore the most interesting to talk about when guests ask you the meaning behind them.

“Objects from your travels are often inexpensive but meaningful and fun objects to have on display. Or even found objects like a bowl of attractive feathers or sea urchins found on a Christmas holiday.”

If you do want to treat yourself to something new for your vignette, Emma suggests a fancy candle, candle sticks, small brass dishes, room sprays in nice bottles, snow globes, coffee table books or small photo frames as great options.

And there are some styling rules which never go out of fashion: “The odds rule is an age old styling trick. Grouping objects on your coffee table or dining table centrepiece in threes or fives is more cohesive-looking than groupings of four or six. There’s probably some science (or feng shui) behind why!”

How to style your coffee table: secrets from a new book

An extract from Bronnie Masefau’s newest book The Meaning of Home – A Place to Belong.

‘Tablescape’ is a rather modern word within the interior design vocab. A ‘scape’ refers to a wide view of a place or area, often represented in a picture – as in landscape, seascape or cityscape. Thanks to the late David Hicks, the famous English interior decorator who invented the word, the beauty of gathering and positioning clusters of objects on a horizontal surface is appreciated as an art form.

For interior designers, it refers to the wide view of a beautifully laid-out tabletop. While this form of styling has been employed by many of the greats for years, its ever-changing dynamic has evolved with the generations. In short, a tablescape is a refreshing way to view an otherwise dull, common area. Our tabletops – coffee tables, occasional tables, consoles, desk tops, bedside tables and hall tables – are more often than not just another one of those missed opportunities to drizzle a room in personality.

So what items go into creating a tablescape? That is a question I hear many of you asking. Anything, really. In fact, the more personality, the better. In David Hicks’ own words, “What is important is not how valuable or inexpensive your objects are, but the care and feeling with which you arrange them.”

The key is in the layering. If you have a sizable coffee table, you might begin with an oversized tray that you layer within. This is a great way to contain items of interest, all while leaving room for yourself and guests to place their cups. The more obvious items used to layer a tablescape are piles of books, vases or vessels of flowers, small trays, bowls, little sculptures or perhaps trinkets from a recent beach walk or trip afar. When setting this area, remember that it is meant to be fluid and ever-changing, to inspire and delight – just like a landscape within the countryside.

Ideas for tablescape items:

Books
Trays of all sizes
Bowls of all sizes
Caneware
Potted plants
Ornaments
Candles
Bottles
Shells
Flowers
Lamps
Items from nature
Plates on vertical stands
Glassware
Artwork of varying sizes
Hats
Headpieces
Models – trains, planes and automobiles
Miniature prototypes (furniture)
Statues and sculptures
Brassware
Silverware
Trinkets collected on travels
Columns or plinths to create varying heights

The list of possible ‘objects of desire’ is endless, limited only by your imagination. There is no right or wrong – just possibilities.

9 tips for creating the ultimate apartment interior

You can sometimes feel limited when you live in an apartment, but while you may compromise on space, you don’t have to compromise on style! 1788 Residences Double Bay is a new apartment complex that certainly doesn’t. Featuring 31 luxury apartments over five levels — above a ground-floor retail space — they were designed by Bates Smart. The team behind the luxury units share their top tips for creating the ultimate apartment.

Lighting: Atmospheric LED lighting, custom glass and metal feature pendants, as well as wall lights in unexpected places like vanities and corridors, brighten rooms and open the space.

Coffee table: Having a statement coffee table in the living room will bring the entire space together. Don’t leave the table empty; place coffee table books, trinkets or even a statement gold statue on it, as seen in 1788 Residences.

Scents: Candles create a welcoming environment. Place a few in the living room and on your bedside table. For the ultimate indulgence, cluster candles. It even works with soaps and fragrances. Place your favourites on a golden tray and put it in your bathroom.

Flowers:
Having fresh flowers in your apartment will not only add beauty but also boost your mood and improve productivity. Experiment with different kinds of flowers, but stick to the one colour palette.

Fixtures and finishes: True luxury is not merely about things that you see but the way things feel. It’s about the weight of the door, the perfect function of the hinges and the inside of the cupboard that is as beautiful as the outside. With fixtures and finishes, try to prioritise quality.

Styled corners and vignettes: Create beautiful vignettes without cluttering the room. Place a lamp, leather chair and marble table with a candle in the corner of your bedroom – perfect for reading before bed.

Walk-in wardrobe: Play with height in your walk-in wardrobe with designer boxers. Utilise the boxes to create levels and dimensions.

Colour palette: Keep the colours throughout the apartment consistent. The colour of your furniture should complement the fixtures and finishes.

Texture: Use different textures throughout the apartment to ensure the room is cosy and welcoming, rather than cold and sterile. For great visual contrast add a rug in your bedroom and a couple of cushions on the sofa.

The winner of May 7 Vignettes with United Interiors…

… is Katherine Dorrington! Chosen by this month’s sponsor, United Interiors. A no-brainer in my opinion!

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.32.30 pm

Julie Ta, marketing manager for United Interiors, says: “We had so much fun seeing all the interpretations of the 7 Vignettes themes this month, and really enjoyed having a daily dose of inspiration from so many talented creatives!

“It was a tricky choice with so many impressive entries, but we have decided on Katherine Dorrington as the winner for her artful eye for detail. Each of her images were so beautifully complex, yet pared-back and chic.

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.32.52 pm

“We were amazed by each individual vignette, and how artistic they all looked as a complete story. Much like choosing the right artwork or rug for a room, when each element works together, the result is stunning and it feels right.”

Top 10 vignette styling tips from Chelsea Hing & Emma Barnett

Interior designer Chelsea Hing and stylist Emma Barnett have collaborated on StillLife, a concept which lets you ‘shop the look’ for your home, with an exclusive range of limited edition pieces, ready to be displayed as the perfect vignette. If you struggle with styling or have no idea what a vignette is, StillLife does all the hard work for you, allowing you to buy an expertly curated collection of pieces to instantly transform your coffee table, entrance hall or mantel.

7_Still_Life15126

Here, Emma and Chelsea share their top 10 styling tips with us, while showcasing their StillLife collections.

Emma’s Top 5 Styling Tips

1. Coffee table vignettes

Use a classic tray to create a vignette on your coffee table.  Stack some books, add your favourite candle and place a simple bloom to add some life.  Not only is it easy to change and update your look by re-styling your tray,  but it’s simple to relocate when you need to move it aside for your dinner party platter.

9_Still_Life15139

2. Books are for more than reading

The uses for books as styling objects are endless. Stack a few and place a candle or special object on top, colour code them to bring your shelves to life, stack them both vertically and horizontally to give shape, or lean on the back of a shelf to layer against.

6_Still_Life14953

3. Investment pieces

Just like your wardrobe, your home should have its classic pieces. Invest in these timeless pieces as they will never go out of style.

2_Still_Life14728

4. Styling with foliage

Flowers are fabulous but can be expensive to maintain. Why not use some leafy branches that are longer lasting and give great height, shape and silhouette? And of course, make sure your vases are beautiful in their own right, so even when empty they will look amazing.

11_Still_Life14986

5. Rein in the colour palette

Mixing colours can look amazing, but if you feel more comfortable keeping to the one, add depth and interest by using contrasting textures and adding metallic accents. Sometimes the simplest combinations are the most stunning.

12_Still_Life14746

Chelsea’s Top 5 Styling Tips

1. Inject personality

Go for pieces that will inject real personality into your interior. This means taking risks and having fun with colour, texture, scale and combination. Don’t hold back and don’t be too safe!

3_Still_Life14912

2. Make it personal

Great styling tells a story about you and your home that feels right. Work in art, lamps, flowers and candles to give it a personal vibe and make it come alive.

1_Still_Life14775

3. The rule of threes

Style with three to four  elements per look as a rule, making sure that the major pieces you use have real presence. Vary the scale and heights of each piece so they don’t compete for attention or look messy.

4_Still_Life14966

4. Styling with art

Art doesn’t always need to be hung on a wall. Use your art as a styling object, propped on shelves, a bench or console to connect it with your other pieces.

8_Still_Life15219

5. It’s all in the detail

Styling a look is all about the elements you put together, which is easier said than done. First and foremost, it needs to make sense for where it is and needs to reflect how you use your space. A dish in the right spot or a single bloom in a vase to greet you, makes all the difference.

7_Still_Life15126

The first collection, launched last month, features 15 pieces that Chelsea and Emma have designed in collaboration with emerging Australian makers Thread Architecture, Andrei Davidoff and Brahman Perera. It’s been well received, with some collections having already sold out. Planning to launch two collections per year, the next range will see the pair partner with other designers, as they hope to provide a distinct and different look to each collection.

Products can be bought within a pre-styled collection or individually. A concierge service is also available for Melbourne metro customers (and free on orders over $300 this month) where Emma will personally deliver to and style the look in your home.

7 Vignettes is back! With Belle’s Steve Cordony

Rumour has it some of you are practising and prepping already! Such is the excitement for the second round of 7 Vignettes starting on Saturday on Instagram. I’m delighted to welcome Steve Cordony, Belle’s interior design editor and stylist extraordinaire as our new judge, and to thank Down That Little Lane for providing a $100 voucher for the winner. But you know it’s mostly just for fun. Any prize is just an added bonus!

Steve Cordony
Steve Cordony

Still not quite sure what a vignette is? Steve explains: “I like to think of a vignette as a small cluster of objects or things that have meaning or resonate an emotion or memory. Items collected from travels, objects found in the most obscure places or that one amazing piece you have been coveting for months.

“I style vignettes constantly to give inspiration for a trend or project I am working on, and I am constantly changing vignettes around in my home. Usually atop a stack of my favourite books on a shelf or my bedside or coffee table, then adding layers of objects and collectables to create a three dimensional mood board.”
