How to pick the perfect coffee machine for your home

To combat the rising coffee prices, many Australians are now making their own cafe quality coffee in the comfort of their own home. If you are looking to upgrade your current coffee machine or considering taking the plunge and investing in your first coffee machine, The Good Guys appliance experts have some tips to keep in mind.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 11.23.18 am

Firstly, it is important to consider what will fulfil your needs. You should ask yourself how you will be using the machine, whether you want it to produce a quick espresso shot to kick-start your morning or if you want it to provide the ultimate barista experience.

Consider the size of your kitchen, if you have a small space and intend to only use the machine quickly in the morning before putting it away you should opt for a lighter model for optimum movability, therefore design will not be a top priority. If you plan on keeping the machine out and making it a feature piece of the kitchen, make sure you have enough countertop space for a larger model as you don’t want to sacrifice valuable space in lieu of your unit.

Once you have decided on size and expected usage, you can then choose the specific type of machine that will be best suited to your needs:

  1. For those who want to be hands on and experiment with a wide range of coffee beans, manual machines are perfect as they allow you to become an at-home barista and they require a certain type of artistry to produce the ultimate cup of coffee. Most manual models use a motor driven pump to force the exact amount of water needed through a thermoblock, creating coffee that can be filtered to suit your specific taste. They do require slightly more work than an automated machine, however you have much more control over the final product.
  2. If you are time poor but don’t want to sacrifice on quality you should opt for an automated machine as they generally do all the work for you. Simply add some coffee beans and the machine will grind them and dispense them at the touch of a button. They are the ultimate appliance for people who want quick coffee with little hassle.
  3. Capsule machines are stylish, easy to use and easy to clean. A capsule or pod removes coffee beans from the equation entirely, relying purely on cases of ground coffee wrapped in filter paper. The capsules are extremely fast and easy to use and are perfect for those on the go.
  4. If you are looking for the ultimate at home coffee-making experience, a coffee machine with both a manual and automatic function in the one unit is the perfect option. These coffee machines offer automatic grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing, as well as the manual unit, automating the two most difficult parts of manual espresso.

When buying a coffee machine, particularly a manual machine, easy to use settings and features will be important, some features to consider may include:

  1. Optimal bar pressure, the speed at which the hot water is forced through the coffee, is usually between 15 and 19 bars.
  2. Thermoblock is the heating element that boils the water to the perfect temperature.
  3. Machines with higher wattage boil water faster.

The biggest kitchen reno trends of 2015

Kitchens are consistently topping home renovation project lists, and with this living space now the hub of the modern-day home, it’s no surprise. Houzz, the world’s leading home renovation and design platform recently undertook the Houzz Australia Kitchen Trends Study, where they surveyed over 2,800 homeowners who had recently completely a kitchen reno. Here’s the trends they found:

Size matters: Australian homeowners have big plans when it comes to their kitchens, with the majority of those renovating their kitchen expanding its size (55%).

Open-plan: In addition to cooking, kitchens are a hub for quality time with family and friends, with 41% noting ease of entertainment as their top-rated kitchen function. Lending itself to socialising and entertaining, nearly half opt for an open-plan design (46%) and one-in-five are including a built-in bar or wine storage.

Over-budget:  More than half of homeowners surveyed budget $20,000 or less for their upcoming kitchen renovations (54%), yet only 46% spent less than $20,000 on completed projects. 13% of Aussies reported spending over $50,000 on their kitchen upgrades.

Contemporary wins: When it comes to style, contemporary is the clear preference across all ages (55%). Under 35s prefer the neutral tones, recycled objects and utilitarian surfaces of industrial style (10%) over the crisp whites, soft blues and rustic timber of a beach style look (2%).

Professional help: More than three-in-four homeowners are hiring a professional to assist with kitchen projects (77%). While the majority hire pros for construction (69%), many homeowners are also hiring pros for design and project management (45% and 23%, respectively).

Appliance wish list: The majority of those renovating their kitchen are upgrading appliances (84%). Among these, cooking is a clear priority, as eight-in-ten are replacing ovens (82%) and another 11% installing the healthier alternative of a steam oven. Small appliance wishlists include the Thermomix (33%), coffee machines (25%) and food processors (22%), among others.

Hardwood tops flooring lists: When replacing flooring, two-in-five homeowners use hardwood in their upgraded kitchens (41%), compared to 26% installing tiles.

Integrating technology: While kitchens remain functional with 62% of homeowners incorporating a pantry cupboard, many also include entertainment technology such as televisions (10%) and built-in music systems (8%).

Rock solid benches: Although engineered quartz (52%) is the favoured choice when replacing benchtops, wood (12%), stainless steel (6%) and concrete (4%) show Australians’ love for industrial style.

The decision to introduce the new system was made as a result of a shift in consumer wants and needs, which have greatly evolved in recent years. “Kitchens are the heart of a home,” says Tim. “Today more than ever, they are hub for all kinds of activities — from cooking and eating to socialising, relaxing or helping the children with their homework. This is why we decided to meet today’s needs in all ways possible.”

How to get the Reno Rumble kitchen look

Sponsored by Freedom Kitchens

A dramatic first week on Reno Rumble saw two talented teams delivering two amazing home makeovers.

Ayden and Jess
Ayden and Jess’ kitchen

When it came to the kitchens, the heart of these two homes, Redbacks’ Ayden and Jess were briefed to turn Alex and Angela’s cramped kitchen into a spacious and sophisticated space. Whilst the dynamic Blue Tongue duo Nick and Chris, were tasked with transforming Lisa’s dated kitchen into an open plan, coastal cooking haven.

How did they do it?

Ayden and Jess extended the kitchen area in Alex and Angela’s home, choosing Freedom Kitchen’s Alaskan white gloss cabinetry, soft grey Newbury Baye and on-trend copper accents to brighten and modernise the space. The Caesarstone benchtops in Calacatta Nuvo are nothing short of stunning and add an air of elegance. The black handles pull the look together, resulting in a modern classic that will stand the test of time.

Ayden and Jess’ kitchen

Homeowners Alex and Angela say it’s the abundant storage and new appliances that have them grinning: “We have our whole family over every second Sunday for lunch, so it’s now going to be a joy to cater for 10 people, rather than fighting for space in the kitchen!”

Ayden and Jess' kitchen

Nick and Chris chose a fitting neutral base, pairing Freedom Kitchen’s Iceland White matt finish and light grey Impressions Alaskan Nuance cabinetry. Caesarstone Sleek Concrete benchtops and complementary overhead pendants add to the earthy, coastal appeal. Mirrored splashbacks and LED strip lighting further accentuate the new, bright space, whist the big deep soft close drawers ticked Lisa’s box for “ample storage.”

Chris and Nick's kitchen

Lisa says the generous island and the extra-large sink for cleaning those big pots are the big winners for her: “The kitchen is now not only very functional for food preparation, it also serves as another living and entertaining space that family and friends enjoy spending time in.”

LG’s SmartWasher washing machine: a top loader that thinks it’s a front loader

The big debate: a top loader versus a front loader. Both have their pros and cons. A top loader is super convenient but not so sensitive to your clothes (thanks to its agitator), and a front loader? Well it’s the complete opposite. So which to choose?image13Well LG have come up with a pretty great solution. With their new SmartWasher washing machine range offering the convenience of a top loader, with the features usually associated with a front loader.

image10

The LG SmartWasher uses a combination of six motions, based on hand-washing movements to provide an outstanding wash, whilst caring for your clothes. The drum moves in a range of unique customised motions so the washing cycle is not just dictated by speed and temperature, but the actual movements of the drum. Better yet, the unique combinations of motions for each different type of cycle cover most laundry needs – from woollen winter items to sportswear and delicate fabrics.

image5

LG also have the only range of top loaders in Australia that feature on-board heaters, offering 60°C Allergen and 40°C Stain Care courses to help remove common household allergens and stubborn stains. But my favourite part of the washing machine is that there’s no agitator in sight, meaning you no longer have to spend ages unknotting wet laundry!

Other great features include: wide-view glass soft-closing lid, touch LED display and a 10-year direct drive motor warranty.

The seriously easy to use Lavazza Fantasia coffee machine

I must admit I’m on a bit of a high at the moment. I just made two coffees. Sure, to many that sounds like no big deal. But ever since my parents installed a state of the art coffee machine into my childhood home some 10 years ago, I had sworn off making coffee and, to be honest, coffee in general. You seriously needed a PhD to operate that machine, and whilst I had had many a tutorial on how to use it, if anyone asked for one, I’d quickly reply it was broken!

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 10.54.26 am

But back to present day, and with my new (gifted) Lavazza machine in tow, making coffee is now achievable, if not easy! The new Fantasia model is all about offering a real Italian cafe experience at home, and can produce a range of made-to-taste coffee beverages including espresso, long black, cappuccino, flat white and hot or cold latte. Catering for all tastes, there are three different settings for frothing milk and two for coffee. Milk can even be cold-frothed for a dense, velvety texture.

Capri_RE231_Latte_Delivery

Other features include a temperature control function that ensures coffee quality is always consistent; an LED on the display, which will light up when the coffee maker needs descaling; and a cup support rack that can be set at three different heights. Cleaning the machine is also easy thanks to removable parts that are dishwasher safe.

The machine also comes with a book of recipes (though I’m not sure if I’m at that level yet!), produced by the Lavazza Training Center, containing a series of espresso-based beverages you can enjoy at home.

Fantasia is compatible with Lavazza’s extensive range of A Modo Mio coffee capsules, is available in three colours and retails for $399. It is available nationally at all leading department stores and electrical retailers, as well as online.

— Disclosure: The Lavazza Fantasia coffee machine was gifted to me, however positive coverage was not guaranteed.

Homedrawn: the girl illustrating the homewares she covets!

With expensive taste (but maybe not the budget to match!), Christina Banos began drawing all the beautiful decorating pieces and furniture she envisioned for her home.

Black_white_resized

As a graphic designer for Real Living, there was far from a lack of stimulus, and she began using all her spare time to bring everything from textiles to appliances, to life. “I find pieces online as well as in my favourite interior stores. I also like to flick through magazines for latest trends, inspiration and products. These items then translate onto paper, which I sketch. Some proving more intricate than others.”

christina banos homedrawn

Compiling her illustrations on her increasingly popular instagram, @homedrawn, it is the culmination of many years of interiors obsessing! “From a young age, I was always filling my sketch pad with drawings and doodles of my dream space. I would dream up floorplans, house designs, objects and constantly change my ideas, it was what I enjoyed doing, and still do!” Sounds like a proper interiors addict to us!

While she studied design, most of her illustration skills are self-taught, which led to a lot of experimentation when beginning Homedrawn. “My practice has changed over time. I started off with Artline pens and then began to add watercolours to my drawings. Now, my main preference is watercolour, however every now and again I do like a traditional pencil sketch!”

Appliances Kitchens RENO ADDICT The Block

Olivia visits The Block’s kitchens and shares her opinion and all the product details

So I’ll let you in on a little secret. A couple of hours before The Block reveals air, we get the photos of all the rooms. The problem is, we don’t get the judges’ comments, so I spend a good 30 minutes trying to decipher who wins. I must say I’m normally pretty accurate — though I will admit I did not see Josh and Charlotte’s 30/30 score for their master bedroom coming!

But my guessing game went into overdrive last week, when I got to see The Block’s kitchens in the flesh (days prior to the reveal). Judge Shaynna Blaze led the tour, and though I attempted on countless occasions to get her opinion out of her, she kept mum (you should be proud, Channel 9)!

Screen Shot 2015-04-16 at 1.33.08 pm
Shaynna and I

So below are all my views and all the product details, should you wish to try and replicate the kitchens in your own home.

Ayden and Jess: Modern traditional

Looking at the kitchen alone and ignoring how it fitted into the surrounding space, it was my favourite. I liked pretty much all of it bar the glass-fronted cabinets. I just don’t see them as realistic. People have mismatched dinnerware; it just seems so messy!

H3_R8_JA_kitchen39

On-trend and functional, the profiled cabinetry in a Stone Grey brought an element of sophistication and the benchtop choice of Silestone Lyra added a natural feel to the classically styled kitchen. Designed and built to entertain, Jess and Ayden opted for Electrolux appliances throughout the kitchen, as well as Breville small appliances and Oliveri taps and sinks.

H3_R8_JA_kitchen02

Dea and Darren: Urban glam

While I later found out how different my opinion was to the judges, the Double Ds produced my second favourite kitchen. And if you looked at the space as a whole (so the kitchen, living and dining as one), well then it shot straight to my favourite. Yes, the ‘goalposts’ were weird, but it was the only townhouse that actually had open plan living.

These 'goal posts' got a LOT of mentions and not in a good way!

The kitchen is really the social hub of the home, executed through smart and functional design without compromising on style (though that mosaic tile splashback was a bit OTT). With Silestone benchtops in Cemento Spa and Pulsar, the appliances included an integrated Vintec Wine Fridge, a Bosch 762 litre French Door Fridge, a Bosch warming drawer, Oliveri sinks and taps and Breville small appliances.

H4_R8_DD_kitchen27

Tim and Anastasia: Modern monochrome

I found Tim and Anastasia’s kitchen layout quite bizarre, what with it being almost like two galley kitchens attached in an L-shape. Standing in it was very cramped, though that said we were 50 or so people there! However, what I did really like was how they connected their kitchen to the terrace with bi-fold windows; perfect for indoor-outdoor living.

The Block in Melbourne

Using contrasting colours and textures of black and white and gloss and matt, the kitchen focused on modern elements like handle-less cabinetry and used soft greys — of the Silestone benchtops in Lagoon — to help balance the monochromatic scheme. Appliances included the Delonghi oven and built-in combination microwave, with a Samsung 636 litre fridge, Breville small appliances and Oliveri taps and sinks.

H2_R8_TA_kitchen00

Josh and Charlotte: Minimalist

I totally agreed with the judges on this one. In person, I couldn’t get over the huge blank space behind the timber bench. It looked so unfinished and cold. Josh and Charlotte’s style is minimalism — which can be great — but I think this time it was taken too far.

The Block in Melbourne

Using crisp white cabinetry, offset by a raised cafe style timber bench and Titanium drawer fronts, the kitchen also included subtle marbling in the Silestone benchtop in Helix. To complement this, Josh and Charlotte used Fisher & Paykel appliances, with an integrated fridge and a gas and ceramic cook top, Breville small appliances and Oliveri sinks and taps.

The Block in Melbourne

Finally, a special thanks to The Good Guys for flying me to Melbourne and giving me a behind the scenes look at The Block. I loved it!

Kitchen design tips for small spaces

Sponsored by Freedom Kitchens

Small kitchens often conjure images of inadequate bench space, a cramped work triangle and precious little space for appliances. With space at a premium, designing with every square centimetre in mind is paramount.

A professional designer can help you make your small space not only look good but maximise the storage space and layout, so you never have to compromise on functionality. Freedom Kitchens share five strategic design tricks to create the impression of a larger kitchen in a small space.

1. Light and bright

A neutral palette will help achieve a seamless, uncluttered look. When choosing materials, gloss finishes will help bounce light around the room and glass and mirrored splashbacks will reflect surrounds, creating the illusion of space.

1. light bright - gloss cabinetry

2. Fuss free

Handles on every cupboard door can be too busy for a small kitchen. Consider fitting them only to the base cupboards, and opt for handle-less touch catches on the upper cabinetry.

3. Double up

Ensure every centimetre of space counts by making it work hard, for instance, incorporate a breakfast bar at one end of the preparation space, then utilise space underneath for additional storage. Also, choose a sink that comes with a range of accessories, such as an integrated chopping board, to make food preparation easier.

4. Storage solutions

Deep drawers make items more accessible and are a more space-efficient option than a standard cupboard. Then take your upper cabinetry all the way to the ceiling to maximise storage and minimise dust.

5. Downsized appliances

Appliance companies have responded to the growing demand for inner-city and apartment style living with compact appliance solutions. Downsized dishwashers, ovens and fridges will keep a small space from feeling cramped and allow for more cabinet space.

How to create a designer kitchen for less

As the renovation boom continues to thrive, Australians are reinventing their homes more frequently than ever. Kitchens have been said to sell houses, so spending big on a kitchen renovation can be a worthy investment in the long run.

Therefore the below advice couldn’t have come at a better time, with the professional kitchen designers at The Good Guys sharing their expert advice, on how to get a designer look in the kitchen, for less!

  • Share your budget with a professional designer as they will be able to provide you with helpful and expert advice on getting the most for your dollar.
  • To avoid any changes to your design, select quality finishes that look great but won’t date quickly, and spend as much as you can afford on durable work surfaces. The cost of quality: priceless.
  • Buy appliances through your kitchen company. This will allow you to take advantage of package deals and ensure the delivery of your kitchen happens at the same time.
  • The best bang for your buck in terms of cabinetry comes in the form of a melamine. Alternatively for a fraction more, ask about the satin smooth melamine finish that will give the impression of a high-end kitchen.
  • Kitchen doors are less expensive than drawers and by positioning them correctly, your designer will be able to maximise storage while continuing the vertical and horizontal lines throughout the kitchen for the most streamlined finish.
  • Use the concept of colour blocking to bring a designer edge to your kitchen – by bringing in a contrasting row of coloured or timber grain cabinetry, you instantly add a wow factor.
  • Contrasting benchtops in material, colour or thickness is another trick to achieving a luxe look.
  • New technologies have given life to laminates, and with The Good Guys Kitchen’s European imported range you can achieve a stone or timber look or select from a wide range of colours.
