Shabby chic kitchens gaining popularity

While sleek modern kitchens, with their clean finishes, custom designed cabinetry and integrated appliances are undoubtedly very popular, the retro, shabby chic style of kitchen is also gaining fans.

smeg interiors addict 4

With cupboards, tables and shelving that rarely match and accessories and tools in a mix of colours and finishes, there is usually one hero piece that anchors the space. And top of that hero wish list, in a growing number of cases, are Smeg’s freestanding retro-styled cookers and iconic refrigerators (I happen to know Jen is OBSESSED), which seamlessly meld beautiful vintage styling with the most efficient 21st century technology.

smeg interiors addict 7

The FAB28 and FAB10 refrigerators (there are other sizes available), feature automatic defrost, crystal quick-chill shelves, tropical rating and the choice of left or right-hand door hinges. The cute FAB10, which comes in a choice of black, red and panna is an under-bench model standing 960mm tall. Designed for drinks, it has bottle shelves, adjustable can holders and door shelving compartments.

n-09

The FAB28, standing 1510mm tall and with a total capacity of 271L, features customisable drawers and keepers for salads, vegetables, meats, dairy, bottles and eggs plus a dedicated chrome wine rack. Available in a multitude of colours and finishes, from strong primaries to beautifully soft gelato colours, it even comes in a denim and black velvet matte finish.

smeg interiors addict

The Victoria freestanding cooker, in black or cream, is worthy of its hero status in terms of both styling and performance. With an enamel finish, perfectly proportioned metal controls and a picture-perfect vintage design, it houses two six-function 70-litre capacity thermoseal ovens, a 2700W electric grill, a seven-burner gas hob and a generous storage drawer. For those wanting to complete the look, there’s even matching rangehoods, in two styles, in both black and cream.

Smeg appliances are available nationally from electrical retailers, appliance specialists and some department stores. For more details visit their website.

We’re a little bit excited about the Smeg small appliance range of kettle, toasters and mixers hitting our shores this year (Jen attended the global launch in Milan last year, as you do!). You’ll be first to know when we know more.

Common laundry mistakes with wool & how to easily avoid them

Gone are the days when washing and caring for your wool garments was a challenging and time-consuming process. AEG can help you avoid wool care disasters with some expert advice and a few simple instructions. You’ll never have to spend days hand washing your woollies again!

Screen Shot 2014-07-31 at 2.11.55 pm

Washing

  1. Look out for the Woolmark Apparel Care logo on washing machines and tumble dryers to know your wool will be properly cared for.
  2. Remove lipstick, make-up or shoe polish by gently rubbing with a lint-free cloth soaked in turpentine, spot cleaning spray or fluid, and rinse with mild soapy water.
  3. Always turn your garments inside out for laundering to prolong the ‘as new’ surface appearance of the garment.
  4. Use your washing machine on the wool setting if it has one, to help reduce shrinkage by gradually reducing the temperature before the rinse phase.
  5. Use a special programme, such as the AEG steam programme, to refresh your clothes, including those labelled dry clean only to remove odours and reduce creasing.

Screen Shot 2014-07-31 at 2.12.08 pm

Care

  1. Rest wool garments for 24 hours before wearing again. This gives the natural resilience and spring in the wool fibre time to recover and return to its original shape.
  2. Wool garments can be refreshed after unpacking or wearing by hanging them in a steamy bathroom. Moisture from the steam will remove wrinkles.
  3. To remove cigarette or food odours, lay wool garments flat on a bed or towel for an hour. Woven garments may be hung in fresh air or on a suitable hanger.

From wear to care and fleece to fashion, AEG, The Woolmark Company and Camilla and Marc have partnered to create a Wool Wear and Care Guide to share their insider tips and tricks of the trade. You can download it here.

The latest and safest in gas cooktop technology

The ideal choice for the skillful chef to the first time cook, the new Piano Flush Cooktop by ILVE is all about putting safety first.

ILFM905TC

Incorporating state-of-the-art innovative technologies that prevent hazards while cooking, the gas cooktop utilises forward-thinking mechanics such as automatic re-ignition. The gas burners will make up to three attempts to re-ignite automatically in the situation of the cooktop’s flame going out. Alternatively, if the cooktop does not ignite, the protection against gas leaks (GasProtekt) intervenes.

Providing confidence when cooking with gas, the cooktop also has a sensor to detect the temperature of each burner when turned off, lighting the letter H on the relative digital display until the temperature lowers to a tepid level which allows for the burner to be cleaned.

ILFM60TX

Design wise, the Piano Flush hob includes four or five gas burners, comprising of wok, large, medium and small sizes, front sensor touch controls and cast-iron trivets. As a perfect example of ILVE’s stylish and innovative kitchen appliances, the Piano Flush Cooktop will make an impression on any home cook, due to it’s sleek design, tech-savvy features and above all, providing the latest safety features for gas cooking.

10 things you should never put down your sink

By Marcus Lim

The last thing we all want to do after a meal is wash the dishes. Most of us are guilty of being too lazy to properly dispose of all small food scraps and find ourselves shoving them down the drain.

But how much damage can this really do? A lot more than you think. Here’s a list of what you should never put down your sink, and reasons why they can be damaging to you, your sink and the environment.

BT_0Z9s1FXrt0SBuxYep0XpButq-dhLRvK9x2lnhnes

1. Fat, Grease and Oil. It may be gooey and soft when hot, but as soon as grease cools down you’re left with a thick mess blocking your pipes. Let it cool down in the pan, wipe it up with a paper towel and throw it where it belongs – in the bin.

2. Orange Peels. Urban Myth: putting orange peels down your drain will make it smell fresh. This is untrue. Why not dispose of them in the compost bin? It’ll save you a headache and you’ll get brownie points from Mother Nature for being environmentally friendly.

3. Coffee Grinds. Urban Myth #2: coffee grinds can clear your pipes. Fact: coffee grinds mixed with the oil in the pipes is a sure-fire drain destroyer.

8LRLkq_0_FZOWiCTXECBWorwNRpbLwNaaYi8UwCwJaY

4. Eggshells. Even the smallest pieces of eggshell can create a mighty mess – they can get stuck on oil and create a build up in your drains.

5. Tea Leaves. Tea may be good for us, but not so much for the drain. If you use loose leaf tea, make sure that as few leaves as possible make it down the drain. They can build up and create a large problem.

6. Semolina. Most pastas are made with semolina, which can become very sticky when wet and can create a hefty blockage if found in your pipes. When draining pasta in your sink, make sure nothing but water makes it down the drain.

7. Metamucil and other medication. Expired liquid medicine is not always best down the drain. Metamucil for example, can turn into hard jelly and will be a nightmare to get rid of. Instead, read the manufacturers guide to disposal and save yourself an unwell drain.

llPkn4nKXsfnoLRTrStO6TQzdi1GGwxOxOmVSvgjIYc

8. Potato peels. Potato peels can become very sticky in water. Avoid this by placing them in the compost bin, along with the orange peels.

9. Jelly. Anything with gelatine in it is a no-go for your drain. There are two options – your stomach or the bin.

10. Rice. Although grains of rice can be hard to keep track of, they can become a sludgy mess if they are backed up in your drain. Try your hardest to avoid any of these trouble makers making their way down your sink.

There’s no need to compromise on style to keep your home cool

As creatures of comfort, our demand for air conditioning has grown and is now valued as a necessary inclusion, rather than a luxury. This demand has driven design changes, so that it’s now possible to be completely comfortable indoors all year round – and in many cases not even notice the air grilles or a neat, compact unit mounted on the wall. Combined with advanced features and sleek, slimline designs, air conditioning has become more stylish and cost-effective to run than ever before!

174136901_5

But with a variety of air conditioning systems on offer, on a hot day it can be all too tempting to rush out to the nearest shopping centre to buy any type! However, it is best to speak with a licenced air conditioning specialist first for their advice on what system will best suit the needs of your home.

In terms of air conditioning systems there is reverse cycle air conditioning, which provides relief from the heat during summer whilst keeping the home warm and cosy during the cooler months. There are also ducted air conditioning systems, which are an ideal whole-home solution for design-conscious homeowners, having ventilation grilles fixed inconspicuously within ceilings or floors. They also offer more comfort and flexibility, allowing users greater temperature control over different zones. Finally, for apartment dwellers, a wall mounted system is a viable solution. Fixed high on a wall, these are unobtrusive and great for smaller spaces, such as a bedroom or living room.

But if you’re still a little unsure on what system would best suit your home, Fujitsu General have developed a checklist to help homeowners determine the most suitable air conditioning system for their home, as well as general tips to maintain it.

Pre-purchase considerations

  • Only licenced contractors can install air conditioning. An experienced technician should be able to offer advice on which brands have a reliable track record, comprehensive warranties and strong customer support. This also adds peace of mind and flexibility when it comes to scheduling ongoing maintenance.
  • Know the space – a system that’s too big or too small will be costly and inefficient.
  • Online tools such as Fujitsu’s Economatch calculator can help homeowners easily find the right air conditioning system for their home. Simply enter basic details – such as room measurements, insulation and the direction windows face – to find the best match.
  • An air conditioning system can be a long-term solution, if adequately cared for. As such, it’s important not to rush into selecting an air conditioner on a whim. Do due diligence and make sure the solution chosen is right for the job.
  • It’s a huge advantage to select a system that operates with minimal noise, as this lessens the likelihood of upsetting neighbours with unwelcome disruptions. It’s a good idea to check with the local council to ensure the air conditioner complies with the council’s noise regulations.
  • Prevent cool air from escaping by installing or replacing insulation batts, as well as sealing draughts under doors with weather strips and filling in cracks along windows using sealants.

Smart tips for an efficient system

  • Use timers: program the system to turn on at a low-speed before waking and before returning home from work or school. This avoids operation at full power during peak times. Program the system to shut down just before leaving the house or going to sleep.
  • Manage temperature control: the ideal temperature range in summer is 21°C to 23°C. One degree of extra heat increases energy consumption by up to 10 per cent.
  • Only cool the rooms being used: keep doors and windows closed and for homes with ducted air conditioning, use zone control features to close vents.
  • Embrace sensor controls: this functionality can positively reduce energy consumption by switching to energy-saving mode when no activity is detected in the room.
  • Clean or change the air filter and grills: these cavities accumulate dust and debris throughout the year.
  • Like a car, air conditioning operates more efficiently when properly maintained. Book a check-up with a licensed technician every two years to ensure your air conditioner stays healthy over 10 to 15 years.

Fujitsu General is Australia’s leading supplier of air conditioning products, stocking a wide range of reverse cycle air conditioners to meet the specific needs of every Australian home.

LG’s new refrigerators keep your produce fresh for longer

A door within a door? Well, that may sound a little overwhelming but LG’s two new Door-in-Door refrigerators promise not just better functionality and organisation, but the ability to maximise the freshness of your fruit and veg.

GF-5D712SL Outside 3D

“LG’s new door-in-door refrigerators are designed for Aussies who prefer to buy fresh and direct,” explains Lambro Skropidis, general manager marketing at LG Australia. “They offer a range of features to not only help keep produce good for longer, but also cater to the organisational needs of food-lovers and home-cooking aficionados – after all, sometimes a tidy, well compartmentalised refrigerator can make all the difference in creating those great meals a lot easier.”

GF-5D712SL Internal with Food

LG’s Door-in-Door design helps to reduce temperature fluctuations that occur whenever the refrigerator door is opened. Moreover, using the Door-in-Door feature reduces cold air loss by up to 41 per cent compared to opening one normal door. There’s also an added element of convenience – the design makes it easier to reach frequently sought-after food and beverages. With a quick push of a button, a unique panel is revealed, so foodies can access the foods they use most.

Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 10.05.46 am

What’s better yet, is the convenience of easily locating your items isn’t limited to just the top
half. With the two-door freezer layout, no longer
 is the
freezer a black hole of ice, but instead an easy to access area. Here, you can organise your frozen goods and home cooked leftovers however you would like, such as by type or date.

GF-5D712

LG’s latest two models are the GF5D712SL, which retails for $4,849 and offers a 712L capacity with counter-depth design, an ice maker and water dispenser; and the GF-5D906SL Door-in-Door model, which retails for $5,499, boasts a capacity of 906L and also includes an ice maker and water dispenser.

Aussie Thermomix alternative weighs in on Choice scandal

It has not been a good month for Thermomix! Whoever knew such emotion could be attached to a kitchen appliance! Mind you, it’s a very expensive and reportedly life-changing one! The brand was subject to not only a product recall, but was also handed a Choice Shonky Award for ”shredding the public’s trust”. And in the process, it broke the record for public nominations.

mycook-premium-AMBIENTE-cocina

The people behind the recently launched competitor, MyCook Premium, want to remind people there is a viable alternative. Designed and manufactured in Europe by the Taurus Group, it works by induction, meaning it transmits heat through the air and by contact with resistors. As a result, they claim the cooking and cooling process is faster, with greater temperature control and a cooking temperature that reaches a high-heat of up to 120 degrees.

Hamish Ingham, head chef and owner of Bar H in Surry Hills and winner of the prestigious Josephine Pignolet Young Chef of the Year in 2004, has been trialling the MyCook Premium. He said: “The induction heating is far better than any competitor models I have tried. It’s much faster and more accurate. And the steam feature is also far superior to similar machines.”

Like the cult Thermomix, it’s not cheap, at $1,890. Also like Thermomix, it’s only available through ambassadors via in-home demonstrations. There’s a special introductory price of $1,650 until the end of October.

Do you have a Thermomix? Do you love it? Would you try this equally expensive but lesser known rival?
