Armadillo launch their new collection of sustainable area rugs

In a year that has so often felt incredibly overwhelming, the latest collection from Armadillo, ‘Nook’, shifts towards the mastery of the small space; finding beauty in the minute details. This artisanal range of area and accent rugs were designed to introduce everyday luxury into oft-forgotten areas of your home.

Handcrafted from natural fibres in earthy textures and grounded hues, this versatile suite of textiles are designed to last. Using materials such as jute and wool, this collection calls to mind the hardwearing beauty of nature – making them perfect for even the most high-traffic areas.

Area rugs can play a key role in styling a space, through their ability to imbue texture and warmth. They also have the added benefit of demarcating distinct aspects of a living area, while retaining the flow of an open plan design.

The entrance mats available as part of this collection were designed to create a calming and welcoming aura at the threshold of your home, while the richly layered runners – perfect for hallways – can act as subtle, yet beautiful, anchor points in a space.

A kitchen mat can be a comfortable and stylish addition to the heart of any home. Additionally, areas such as laundries and mudrooms – which tend to prioritise function over fashion – can be elevated significantly through the considered addition of textiles.

In the bedroom, a small-scale rug can offer a stylish point of interest, without overpowering a space intended for relaxation and rejuvenation. An ensuite, too, can always benefit from a soft, fluffy mat underfoot!

The Nook collection is focused on the mantra that every recess and corner should count – even those designated for reading and reflection are deserving of an artisanal backdrop, however subtle. By foregrounding the finer details of a space, Armadillo encourages the careful consideration of the home and the way in which we interact with it.

This range includes seven different rug sizes, in a number of styles, colours, and patterns; all influenced by aspects of the natural world. Consequently, whether your style is contemporary, country or coastal, these textiles can elevate your space through the thoughtful addition of a tactile touch underfoot.

The 10 cult homewares for the coolest kid’s room

We’re not ones for suggesting you buy things just because everyone else is or because they’re trendy, but there’s a reason these 10 great products are popping up in kid’s rooms all over the country. They’re not just fun but great design and they’ll help you create a space both you and your children fall in love with. Do your kids have any of these in their rooms?

This Little House cubby house/bed, $249.95/$499.95 from This Little Love

Available in a variety of colours to suit girls and boys and different ages, this is a super cool, simple design, which can be accessorised as much or as little as you like (think fairy lights, pompoms and more). It’s available in a cheaper cubby version and a more expensive cot-to-bed version too.

Armadillo & Co Dandelion rug in multicolour, $560 from My First Room

Introducing junior collections of their iconic fair trade, handwoven creations — shrinking them down to kid size and adding colour — was a super smart move by Armadillo & Co, because they’re constantly used by stylists in nurseries and little people’s bedrooms and playrooms. Any of these rugs is a safe, classic, hardwearing bet, which will last your child many years.

Le Sac En Papier, $15 from A Cup of Chic

Everything’s a little more chic in French, non? This monochrome paper bag (literally) is seen in the corners of the coolest nurseries. Great for tidying up toys or storing the less the decorative items like nappies! It’s in English on one side and French on the other. And it’s only $15! I don’t know why it works so well and has been so popular, it just does! Monochrome, typography, simplicity and affordability all add up to make this a must-buy! Paris and New York-based graphic design studio Be-Poles were onto a winner with this one.

Rokii animal and rocker, $499, top3 by design

As rockers go, this one is seriously design savvy and won’t look out of place in the stylish or minimalist interiors! Sebastian was very lucky to have been given one of these by some lovely friends who knew I might not love all the primary colours that come with parenthood! It starts off life as a rocker chair and later, when they’re older, you attach the animal (is it a sheep, is it a horse?!) and it becomes a fun toy.

Product picks for an eco-friendly kids room

By Emma McDonald

With the rise of the more conscious, sustainable consumer — think fair trade, organic and environmentally friendly — some talented interior designers have been busy turning their creative minds to designing products with this ethos in mind. There are some truly beautiful homeware products available today, created by designers who place sustainability and fabulous design on equal footing.

We decided to go shopping, and style an eco-friendly kids bedroom. By sourcing sustainable products, not only are you purchasing a beautiful and often unique piece, but you’re purchasing their story, and we love our products having good ones. So happy shopping, conscious shopper. Your kids’ bedroom will look amazing!

For the floor

Armadillo & Co are an Australian rug company who create wonderful floor coverings. Their artisan weavers are seen as integral part of their design process, using generations old, hand weaving techniques. As well as providing fair trade working conditions for their weavers, they also support education programs for the children in the villages. The Armadillo & Co Junior Collection comes in a range of bright, wonderful colours.

New Armadillo & Co junior collection of kids rugs

Armadillo & Co is launching its first ever rug range for kids rooms, the Junior Collection.

armadillo and co junior collection 1I thoroughly approve of the move by founders Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst to develop something more timeless and less ‘kiddy’ than most of what’s already on offer for children’s rooms. Most of these rugs would suit a child from baby right through to teenager.

“Junior was certainly planned!” laughs Jodie. “In fact, it’s been well over 9 months of hard work. We are both parents – between us we have four children – and decorating their spaces was a battle to find items without ballerinas or rocket ships on them, ugh. Little ones like classic designs too, and quality underfoot as they so often romp around shoeless. Our rugs are fun but timeless.”

Registrations are open for Life Instyle Melbourne

Is it that time of year again already?! Registrations are now open for Life Instyle at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building, with a new slogan ‘defy ordinary’. I like it.

The trade event, from 1 to 4 August, welcomes a line-up of close to 300 carefully selected exhibitors representing premium, bespoke and design led products across homewares, giftware, lifestyle and children’s products within a beautiful, intimate shopping environment.

“Following the success of Life Instyle Sydney, we continue to push the envelope, raise the bench and add colour and excitement to our program. The exhibition has received overwhelming support from trade and looks forward to welcoming a high calibre of exhibitors this year,” says Amelia Coote-Harris, exhibition manager. Visitors can expect to source from industry heavyweights such as Telegram Paper Goods and Seedling as well as new faces such as Armadillo&Co and Samantha Wills Stationery.

Real Living, March 2013

I think Real Living nail their covers, and March issue is no exception. I was so excited to tear the plastic off my subscription copy I gave myself a paper cut. Literally. And then fell head over heels in love with the reversible polka dot and floral quilt on the cover. So it should have come as no surprise that the brand of the quilt is… wait for it… Real Living, whose three new bed linen designs are now available at Target. Yes please!

Real Living March 2013 cover

Highlights

  1. The ‘Bring on Prints’ spread was five pages of sumptuous colour. I would love to be brave enough to make a splash like this in my home, but I think I’ll play it safe and just incorporate some of the elements. I particularly liked the mixing of Anna Spiro’s Higgledy Piggledy Stripe wallpaper in Ginger Jar Blue, with Armadillo & Co’s Designer Collection Casablanca custom wool rug in Caribbean/White (editor Jen recently fell in love with Armadillo’s new bright colour options at last week’s Decoration + Design).

New Aussie site launch: In A Designer Home

I’m often bemoaning the state of eCommerce in Australia, especially when it comes to homewares, but all sorts of great Aussie sites have been launching recently. One of the latest is In a Designer Home, which brings together some of my favourite brands to one online store. There’s a real emphasis on Australian designers too, which is great to see.

From Armadillo & Co rugs to Dinosaur Designs tableware and vases to Norman + Quaine furniture, Idh has collated a really great range which promises to be ever evolving. Idh would rather see people spend a little more on original Australian pieces which will be passed down through a family, rather than cheaper, replica imports.

Based in Sydney’s Surry Hills, director Jamee Huntington says: “We are supporting the Australian design community that has so much to offer. We noticed a gap in the market and saw the opportunity to support innovative designers through online retail. The Idh team has a strong interior design background so Idh was born from the constant need to supply clients with beautiful and unique products.

“Our aim is to sell quality products that will travel through time with you and be passed on to future generations. With new products and designers always jumping on board, we are constantly recreating and reinventing the way we showcase design. Not only do we offer unique products, we also strive to excel in great customer service, leaving our consumers with an enjoyable shopping experience.”
