4 ways using an interior designer can actually save you money

By Ali Ross

There is no doubt the DIY design market is rapidly expanding. This trend is driven largely by the hot housing market and the design industry is more accessible now than ever.

We have daily design content delivered to our inboxes each morning as we eat our breakfast, while online platforms such as Pinterest provide us with an opportunity to gather new ideas and source products. Naturally, there is also an understanding that DIY renovating will save money. This isn’t always the case though.

Ali Ross says using an interior designer can actually cost you less than doing it yourself
Ali Ross says using an interior designer can actually cost you less than doing it yourself

As a design professional with over a decade of experience here in Australia and the US, one of my biggest learnings relates to the value a designer can add. You may not need an architect to run your project but consider using an interior designer for these reasons:

1. We add value through considered space planning, maximising the potential of a space in terms of flow and function and the level of comfort through thoughtful detailing. In other words, we get it right and we get it right the first time.

On a recent project, I was called on to help improve the flow and function of an entry, hall and lounge room. By simply filling in an oversized opening off the entry and recommending a new glazed door in a new location, it opened up a whole new way for the client to arrange and use the space. It was an obvious solution to me, but one that had been overlooked by the client. Now they actually enjoy using the space!

2. As professionals, we have the skills, experience and foresight to identify and solve problems and make the right decisions as they arise (or before) quickly and confidently. We take control of what can otherwise be a stressful process. Whether it’s selecting the appropriate tap spout length to suit a basin, establishing the perfect position for a power point to work in with a furniture plan or simply selecting a suitable size sofa or rug for a space, all of these small decisions impact the end result.

3. We have relationships with reputable trades and suppliers who we trust to deliver good services and products.

On a few occasions, I have been brought in to correct or ‘make good’ mistakes that have been made, with joinery in particular. One client had allowed a joiner to make some design-related decisions but the result was far from well resolved. In fact, they could hardly access one part of the wardrobe, the hardware that had been selected was cheap and the sliding doors were so thin they shook and shuddered along the tracks. When they decided to have new joinery built for another location, they didn’t hesitate to contact me.

4. Designers have access to trade pricing on all local and international furniture and this ranges from 10%-to-25% off retail. I pass on this trade pricing to my clients.

To give you an example, I recently completed a job where I provided a combination of bespoke joinery and furniture selections. The furniture purchases made for part of the home came to approximately $18,000. A trade discount ranging from 10%-to-20% was passed on to them, offering a saving of over $2,500. My fees for this part of the job were around $2,000, an amountmore than covered by the savings on the furniture.

When you consider these figures and facts – can you really afford not to use an interior designer?

Give your sofa a brand new look for a few hundred bucks

If you haven’t already, you need to know about Comfort Works. They sell slip covers in a huge variety of textiles, colours and patterns, to get your tired sofa looking like new again for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. It’s not only cheap, but great for the environment. And it all happens online (you can order up to eight free swatches).

They supply handmade covers for almost all the IKEA sofas and armchairs as well as a few Pottery Barn ones. Before too long, they promise to offer a custom service too, to suit pretty much any sofa. This appeals to me for so many reasons. I’m fickle, so I love the idea of being able to change up my couch for a few hundreds dollars every couple of years (yes, I know you should buy big items like sofas in neutrals, but we don’t always make the wise decisions). I’m currently loving the  trend for velvet lounges and Comfort Works offer a variety of velvets as an option.

It’s also a great solution for those on a budget who might pick up a pre-loved couch on eBay and want to give it an easy makeover before they put it in their home. If you have kids and want to protect your sofa from spills and burp-ups for the next 12 months, here’s your answer! And then there’s the people with a ridiculously lived-in couch that has seen better days but they can’t bear to part with it because it is so comfy, even if it does look sorry for itself.

Last year, I partnered with Comfort Works, which is an Aussie business, to help my friend Amanda make over her sofa (I like to be able to vouch for quality before writing about things like this). She hated the colour of her IKEA lounge but, in the middle of saving for her wedding to Scott (incidentally, I was the MC and it was a stunning day!), couldn’t justify a new one. They were really happy with the result (shown below).

You can see many other people’s transformations on their flickr.

Amanda's new look lounge
Amanda’s new look lounge

“We had bought the IKEA couch during a short period overseas with the intention of selling before we left. We ended up leaving earlier than planned for Scott’s work purposes so the company helped ship everything back to Sydney,” Amanda said. “The blue wasn’t a colour that was going to work with what I planned for the room, and the couch itself was absolutely fine so it seemed a waste to buy a new one when all I had wanted was to change the colour to grey!

“The option to have a cover which was going to fit perfectly was a winner. I was so happy when we got it. The material was strong and durable and the pieces fit each part of the couch like a glove! I couldn’t believe how they had worked out exactly the best way to have the piece fit; elastic in the right spot, velcro here and there. It looked like a professional upholstery job when we were done with it.

“I got to keep the couch but upgrade it. When this one wears out down the track or we change colour schemes, we have the option to replace it again! Brilliant.”

If you’re feeling brave, you might want to try their new addition, a DIY tufting kit which also works on upholstered headboards. You could use this on an existing sofa or in conjunction with a new slip cover.

You probably want to know what the catch is? Hard to say, as international shipping is free (well, refunded in full when you post a photo of your sofa transformation on their Facebook Page, which is smart marketing!), they recently won a Houzz award for great customer service, and you can expect to wait just four to six weeks for your sofa covers (a lot quicker than waiting for a brand new sofa these days!).

Discover Comfort Works for yourself.

Disclosure: Comfort Works provided Amanda’s slip cover free of charge for review purposes. Positive coverage was not guaranteed.

Designers House Rules RENO ADDICT

New series of House Rules starts tonight on 7

For those suffering from The Block withdrawals, fear not. The second series of last year’s hit reality renovating show House Rules, starts tonight (Wednesday 30 April) on 7.

Architect and House Rules judge Joe Snell
Architect and House Rules judge Joe Snell

Get ready to see six new teams from around Australia go on a ride of a lifetime, putting their homes on the line and skills to the test, as they battle it out to become mortgage free. Together, they’ll travel the country, hand over the keys to their homes and leave their competition rivals to transform every room in their house.

With host Johanna Griggs at the helm again this year, six brave teams will gamble with the most important possession in their lives. Designer Carolyn Burns-McCrave and build supervisor Chester Drife will be overseeing the teams, who have just a week to completely transform each home. Guided by just five House Rules, the teams will each be given a designated zone in the house to work on and they must draw on all their creative talents, determination and strategy to achieve the most stunning transformations.

Two expert judges – architect Joe Snell and Home Beautiful magazine editor Wendy Moore – will score each team’s renovation. But the last word will go to the homeowners. Without knowing who was responsible for each zone, they will score them all. Will they love or loathe what they see?

Scores will be revealed at Homebase, where eliminations will also take place. And in the final, the last two teams will face off for the chance to walk away with their entire mortgage paid off in full.

I only got into the show at the end of the last series but wish I’d watched more of it as I found the concept really interesting. Will you be watching?

Bowen & Kenneth: mason jar lights and DIY terrariums

I’m a sucker for anything quirky or vintage inspired, so I am very much in love with new online homewares boutique Bowen & Kenneth.

Mail Attachment

Featuring lights, birdcages and terrariums, partners Sam Pridmore and John McMahon were inspired to start the business after Sam underwent brain surgery late last year. “We both had an epiphany after getting such a shocking reality check,” he explains. “We realised that life is far too short to be doing something you don’t love and I was most definitely sick of being just another number in a huge retail store. So we started creating.”

The collection began with a single birdcage with an LED tree inside it, an idea Sam had while in hospital. After getting great compliments on their one at home, they started creating them for everyone and the range has naturally sprung from there.

bowen keenth

A favourite of mine and a best seller of theirs, are the terrariums. A fun and unique take on the resurging terrarium, they come in DIY packs, but when finished look as professional as anything store bought. While the DIY edge wasn’t the initial idea, Sam and John both agree it turned out better than expected.

bowen kenneth

“A friend wanted me to send her one (terrarium), so I went off to the local post office eager and excited,” says Sam. “When I arrived and explained to the man that I wanted to send the fragile vase but it could not be tipped upside down or on its side, he just laughed at me! He said I was crazy.

“I was devastated. My amazing terrariums were wonderful, but if I couldn’t send them in the post I couldn’t sell them on our website! So after brainstorming ideas including fake plants, glue and resin, we finally came to the conclusion that we should make the terrariums into DIY packs and send everything in its own little package. We figured if we enjoyed making the terrariums ourselves, our customers would too!”

With simple how-to-guides on their website, even those without the DIY gene (myself included) can manage.

5 renovators’ top tips for surviving when your home looks like a construction site

By Karen Clough

It’s amazing what a lick of paint can achieve when you’re looking to transform the feel of a room in your home. Sadly, it’s not always going to cut the mustard – particularly when your home needs some drastic modernising or renovating. This is the story of my recent life.

karen clough

After moving into an abandoned home with no kitchen – you read that right, no kitchen – a little over 2 years ago, I’m finally extending the house and shall be installing a brand spanking new culinary masterpiece before Christmas. It’s a messy job, and although most people don’t wait quite so long to get the job going, here are some things I’ve learned along the way as to how you can get by without those essential rooms.

The Block’s Lysandra Fraser on creating the wow factor on a budget

In the second of our regular posts from The Block Sky High winners Alisa and Lysandra Fraser, it’s Lysandra’s turn! She reveals how they spent most of their budget on the show on tradies, picking up bargain furniture, linen and accessories from Ikea, Freedom, Kmart and even op shops, only splurging here and there. Just up our ‘style without the snobbery’ street!

Lysandra the block

Growing up, Alisa and I were always taught the value of a dollar. If you wanted something, you had to work hard to get it. Money was spent wisely and it had to stretch a long way. These same values followed Alisa and I as we entered The Block, and I believe they ultimately contributed considerably to us being crowned the winners.

The latest kitchen makeover trends

Australians are still all about the neutrals when it comes to their kitchens, but they’re mixing it up with more eclectic finishes, matt doors, deeper benchtops and deorative murals.

In 2012, kitchen makeover specialists Granite Transformations completed more than 8,000 kitchens in greys, beiges and whites and in response to demand, they’ve released 5 new colours exclusive to the Australian market and in time for the warmer months ahead. Ikea, on the other hand, whose catalogue launch I attended last month, has introduced a red kitchen, especially with its Australian Asian customers in mind.

A quick & cheap kitchen makeover with new tile & laminate paint & no need for primer

Impatient for a new kitchen but just can’t afford it right now? Check out these new tile and laminate paints for a fuss-free makeover with no need for a primer.

tile laminate paint 1

One of the easiest ways of saving on the cost of renovation is to retain existing cabinetry and splashback tiles while spending on new appliances. The latest Tile and Laminate Paint from Flood, restores the appearance of laminate or melamine cupboards to new while the same paint can bring a fresh, glossy finish to dated tiles. Unlike other paints of this kind, it requires no primer, making it faster and less expensive.
