Online shopping fix: Lauren Skye Studio

Designing bold, high impact textiles and cushion covers, designer Lauren Bower fell in love with the world of homewares after leaving a career in fashion design.

lauren skye

“I find working with cushion covers to be liberating as you can be much more adventurous with homewares than with fashion,” explains Lauren. “There is no need to cater to different body shapes and body insecurities and also, the simplicity of a cushion cover allows me to fully focus on the fabric print and colour, enabling the creative process to run unfettered.”

Her brand, Lauren Skye Studio, features a myriad of cushions in bright colours and bold prints. All designs are printed on a cotton/linen blend and come with the option of being custom ordered so that you can have the print of your choice in any colour under the rainbow.

All orders are shipped free within Australia, with cushions starting from $45. Shop online.

Metalicus founder Melma Hamersfeld swaps fashion for art

As the founder and designer behind fashion brand Metalicus, Melma Hamersfeld is no stranger to creativity. Known for her artistic flair, passion for colour and innovative touch, Melma has only recently decided to step away from the fashion world, this time embarking on a new adventure: art.

MH-portrait on rooftop-reflective
Melma Hamersfeld

Her first official artistic collection, Acrylic on Acrylic, is quintessentially Melma. Modern and minimal yet bright, it is a combination of acrylic paint and Perspex. Cleverly layered geometric shapes featuring carefully selected seasonal and on-trend colour palettes are the basis of her innovative sculptural wall pieces, with skillfully designed mounting techniques avoiding any distraction when it comes to appreciating these works of art.

While still relatively new to this realm of design, Melma’s pieces have already been gaining attention from local art enthusiasts, as well as being picked up and displayed in various private residences and commercial spaces, including Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

As a longstanding member of the arts and fashion world, Melma, with her renowned willingness to take risks, has once again showcased her impressive ability for creating innovative and creative designs, and this time from just two simple elements.

Addict Abroad: Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech

I wanted to share with you the most magical place we visited last week in Marrakech: the Jardin Majorelle. It would have to be one of the highlights of our trip so far. The colours, especially in the Moroccan sunshine, are simply stunning.

10372297_10152445002995797_3334007531205461718_n

The stunning house and garden is a shady and peaceful oasis in the middle of bustling, noisy, dusty (and yes, let’s be honest, pretty dirty!) Marrakech. Once you step through the gates, it’s like you’re in another world.

10369740_10152445006240797_7347726691902719265_n

10308234_10152445003150797_8414947726012504852_n

The gardens were a labour of love for French artist Jacques Majorelle (1886 — 1962), who created them, from 1924. I have never seen so many, or such magnificent and large cacti. Amazing. And that blue! It’s no surprise there is now a colour called Majorelle Blue.

10374508_10152445002875797_3421867663185389351_n

The story doesn’t end there though. Can you believe these gardens and this beautiful villa were almost destroyed and replaced with a hotel complex? Enter Yves Saint Laurent (who needs no introduction) and his partner Pierre Bergé, who, living in the city, were big fans of the garden and decided to buy the place and restore it, adding to its already impressive range of exotic plants.

10374907_10152445003645797_4935526966768116730_n-1

When Yves died in 2008, Pierre donated the place to their foundation, to ensure it could remain open to the public. A memorial to Yves can now be found in the garden.

The house contains a Berber museum (Berbers are the original indigenous people of Morocco) and also a gallery of Yves’ ‘love’ artworks, which he created each year for many years and sent as New Year cards to clients and friends.

If you ever find yourself in Marrakech, this is a must-visit place.

Merging fashion and interiors to create beautiful results

The merging of fashion and interiors is something that is becoming increasingly popular and as a lover of both, I’m seriously enjoying it.

Heroshotcushions

Langdon L.T.D. is the latest to do so, creating hand drawn and digital prints which are handcrafted in India and then transformed into statement pieces for both the home and wardrobe.

“Once we create a print, we are able to modify it and apply it to a variety of mediums – a cushion, a silk kimono, a dress, a jumpsuit,” explains co-owner Delia Langdon. “We are constantly exploring new and innovative print techniques with plans to continue expanding both fashion and home lines.”

 LL_RUGS_PRODUCT_001 6963

Run by Delia and her sister Phoebe Langdon, the label was launched  in 2012 with a collection of silk kimonos, scarves and cushions, they have now expanded into rugs, throws and women’s ready to wear.

Drawing on a lifetime appreciation in the beauty found in nature, culture, art, architecture and colour, the sisters were particularly inspired by their grandparents, one a botanist, the other a seamstress.

KALEIDO: a unique collaboration of interiors and fashion

It shouldn’t work so effortlessly well, but somehow KALEIDO has been able to merge interior and fashion design and make it seem natural.

swimsuit#6

The debut collection, which was created by interior designer Danielle Brustman and fashion designer Michelle Boyde, was two years in the making, with the friends collaborating across continents in a call and response style.

“KALEIDO sprang to life in 2011 when I was in New York for six months and Michelle was in Melbourne,” explains Danielle. “We began KALEIDO without predetermined ideas as to where this process or project might lead. One of us would offer an idea in sketch form and the other would respond, all via email or Tumblr. An idea for a chair could provoke a design for a hat, which in turn might inspire a sketch for a light that becomes a swimming costume and so on and so on.”

KALEIDOmedia10

This collaborative approach across design disciplines may at first glance seem incongruous, but in context, actually makes up a unique and slightly eccentric family of pieces.

While Danielle is the expert in interiors and Michelle in fashion, the beauty of working in their distinctive manner, means that they can dip their toes into other design specialties.

“It’s great having another eye, but also bringing different perspectives to the table with our individual skills base and experience,” says Michelle. “Danielle might come up with a colour palette that I’ll interpret into wearable panels, but then she’ll work with me on the finish and I’ll help her problem-solve an interior concept.”

KALEIDOmedia12

Both having a strong interest in seeing how far they can push the boundary between interiors and fashion, Danielle and Michelle plan to interweave the two to the point that they are inseparable.

“We’re more interested in the whole than the individual parts and the play between the two disciplines,” says Michelle. “Hence the reference to ‘gesamkunstwerk’ [a German word meaning a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms].”

With a joint love of colour and line, this first collection features fashion, jewellery, stools, murals and lighting and with an aim to bring out two collections a year, there will be a lot more of KALEIDO to come.

Win a framed Hermès scarf in March 7 Vignettes

This month we have a very unique and lovely prize for the winner: a framed Hermès scarf from Provincial Styles worth $560. Our guest judge, stylist Jacinta Preston, is back for a second turn as she can’t get enough of 7 Vignettes! And who can blame her?

This month's guest judge Jacinta Preston is back for more
This month’s guest judge Jacinta Preston is back for more

Fiona Longmire, from Provincial Styles, loves all things French, and started making beautiful homewares from vintage and new Hermès scarves as part of her French-inspired online homewares business. Her framed scarves are divine. This hot pink one up for grabs is called Printemps Ete 69, and was first issued in 2010 . It represents women’s fashion over the past few decades.

hermes framed scarf

One of the unique features of these scarves are the hand rolled edges. The framer hand stitches the scarf onto a board and then puts a second matt around the scarf, still leaving the edges of the scarf visible.

Here are the themes…

This month, I decided to crowdsource them and more than half of these are from you, the readers and participants. The most interesting is probably haft-seen, which is a traditional table setting of the Iranian spring celebration where seven items beginning with S are displayed. For our purposes, you can use ANY seven items beginning with S. Mixing it up a little and learning a little about other cultures in the meantime! Women is for International Womens Day in March and fashion is for the Hermès scarf prize. And Italian because Tuscany is the first stop on my big European adventure, starting this month.

Good luck to everyone taking part. 7 Vignettes starts on Saturday 1 March. Excuse me if I’m quiet but I’ll be in New Zealand being MC at my friend Amanda’s wedding!

Next month, I’ll be in Milan for the furniture fair halfway through 7 Vignettes. Eek. That’s going to be one exciting week!

Illustrator Kerrie Hess shares her Paris apartment and tips for style on a shoestring

I’ve been to Paris an impressive 14 times and have always dreamed of living in a Paris apartment. Talented illustrator Kerrie Hess has lived this dream. Luckily for Australia, she has recently returned home to Queensland, but she generously shared some photos from her stylish pied-à-terre with us.

1 Kerrie Hess_MG_2672

It’s a brave person who moves to the other side of the world to a country with a different culture, where they speak another language, but for Kerrie, it was a bit of a case of now or never. “I had been learning French for many years and a lot of my clients were in Paris, so, while my son Marcel was still only two, it seemed a great time to move to France.” They spent 18 months there before returning to settle in Brisbane’s Hawthorne, in time for Marcel to start school.

28 Loungeroom_MG_2554

The stylish Miss Hess (and yes she is the sister of fellow illustrator Megan Hess) works for such huge names as Chanel, Kate Spade New York and Louise Vuitton, so it seems most appropriate for her to have been creating her beautiful drawings in one of the most romantic and fashionable cities in Europe.

Taubmans team up with Josh Goot for tee in a tin

In a seriously cool collaboration for a paint brand, Taubmans has partnered with Aussie fashion designer Josh Goot to create a limited edition T-shirt packaged in a paint tin.

Taubmans x Josh Goot T-shirt

Drawing inspiration from a beautiful palette of Taubmans paint colours, the T-shirt’s design is a fusion of interiors and fashion and a new interpretation of Josh’s signature style. Using white as a base, he created an eye-catching, digitally painted floral design, with his trademark whimsical use of colour. In keeping with Taubmans’ brand manifesto to inspire consumers with colour, Josh chose a palette that reflects the colours that inspire him this season, including Lavendula, Rouge Roi, Split Lime and Taffy Twist.

Taubmans x Josh Goot Tin

He says: “There is a natural connection between Taubmans and Josh Goot as we have a shared passion for colour and quality. I loved the idea of using a blank white T-shirt as a canvas, working with Taubmans to create a digitally painted orchid for this Summer 13/14 piece.”

Take a look inside Guy Sebastian’s holiday home

Today we take a look inside singer Guy Sebastian’s holiday home on the NSW South Coast. I interviewed his wife, Jules, about creating a family hideaway as well as somewhere perfect for entertaining.

guy sebastian 3

The couple had been looking for a holiday home when Guy fell in love with the headland in Gerroa and was determined to find something to buy in the area. “This house came up for sale a couple of months later and we grabbed it while we could,” said Jules, a fashion stylist. “In terms of location it was exactly what we were looking for, but we wanted to renovate to make it into the dream home.”

The renovation meant gutting half of the top floor and starting again. Guy got stuck in himself, as walls were knocked out to really open up the view of the ocean, before all the bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens were renovated. “It was a lot of work,” says Jules, who recently announced she is pregnant with the couple’s second child. “Guy was like Bob the Builder!

3 real rooms with heart

By Meghan McTavish

Home styling is much like fashion, in the sense that it’s not really healthy to fall all over yourself trying to emulate every picture perfect look featured within the pages of the glossy mags. Mags do envy-inducing escapism oh so well but we love blogs like Interiors Addict for Jen’s personal tips. It’s like getting advice from a friend – which we know is sometimes the best place to go if you’re in a bind.

There’s also gold to be found in real homes and we think there’s really nowhere that sums up a person’s personality more than in their living room. Here are 3 difference spaces that we’ve shot for Citizens of the World that have proved to be some of our most inspirational.

Jewellery designer Alex Smyth-Kirk of Vera Xane

CitizensoftheWorld_alex_smyth_kirk_DominicLoneraganPhotography__MeghanMcTavish_FashionPhotography_070813_0027

Alex seems to feel very comfortable with colour, which is always fun to shoot. We love how her couch and chair are very muted but make an excellent base for all her incredible art and bright cushions.
