The Block Triple Threat starts 27 January & Selling Houses Australia series 8 on 4 February!

Hooray! We have a date to count down to, Blockheads! I was worried The Block Triple Threat might not start until next month, seeing as the TV channels seem to start previewing new things so ridiculously early these days. Sometimes by the time they actually start you’ve seen so many TVCs you’re already over it!

And my other favourite, Selling Houses Australia, has a new series 8 starting on 4 February. Can’t wait to tell you all about a new project I’m working on with one of its stars, Charlie Albone, very soon.

Selling Houses Australia series 8, starts 4 February, only on the LifeStyle Channel
Selling Houses Australia series 8, starts 4 February, only on the LifeStyle Channel

We only recently got Foxtel (I know!) and Selling Houses has become a serious addiction. Some formats are just so simple and brilliant. And as far as chemistry goes between hosts, you cannot beat Andrew Winter, Shaynna Blaze and Charlie as a trio! Love the banter! I especially love how they keep it real. The end results are often not perfect but they spend a sensible amount of money to do what needs to be done to get the place sold for the best price. There’s always a nice human interest story from the owners to get sucked into too. Just my cup of tea! And no bitching like on The Block (but that’s a different kind of show and however much people say they don’t like that element, it still seems to get the ratings!).

We can’t wait to have Shaynna back on our screens in new Selling Houses and The Block

Which show are you a fan of? I’ll be watching both! Roll on Sunday night room reveals and a serious dose of Shaynna in our lives! House Rules must be starting soon too?

Shaynna Blaze’s tips for kerb appeal & exterior colour schemes

By Shaynna Blaze

Everyone wants to make sure their home looks the best on the street. To ensure you give your home kerb appeal, there are some considerations to take into account before picking up a paintbrush.

When painting your exterior, you need to determine what the hero feature of your home is. This could be its architectural style, any unique structural features or even the materials your home is made from. You can then create a colour scheme which highlights or compliments your home’s best feature.

If your house has a modern architectural design with angular rooflines, choose a colour scheme that highlights these eye-catching features. Accentuate this detail by choosing a palette of light and shade. Use a mid-grey charcoal such as Taubmans Hi Ho Silver on the eaves and fascia of the roofline, and a lighter colour like Taubmans Metal Low on the exterior walls.

Taubmans Image 1

Similarly, this technique can be used for a period home such as a Victorian. Highlight the decorative latticework by painting it in Taubmans Snow Ballet contrasted with cream walls in Taubmans Torte.

Taubmans Image 2

The location of your home can have a significant impact on the style of your home and therefore your exterior colour scheme. For example, Queenslander type houses will have a very different exterior look than a sandstone home you might find in New South Wales.

The Queenslander is one of Australia’s most iconic architectural designs. Their wide expansive balconies are perfect for lounging during the warm summer days. The cool colour scheme in this image works as visual relief from the extreme heat and enhances the home’s natural surrounds. Contrasting the dark roof with lighter walls in Taubmans Sea Command, and even lighter trims in Taubmans Blue Strike, gives the exterior an airy feel.

Taubmans Image 3

If your home has no distinct architectural feature, use colour to add some personality. A bold colour on your front door creates an inviting entrance and is an easy way to change the look of your home with on trend colours. A deep purple such as Taubmans Magic Magenta or a bright red like Taubmans Poinciana Red on your door creates a focal point and will give your home a strong street presence.

Taubmans Image 5

Once you’ve decided on a colour scheme that best suits your home’s exterior it’s important to choose an exterior paint which will not only look good, but also gives your home UV protection like Taubmans Sunproof Exterior. This paint has been specially formulated to withstand the sun’s punishing UV rays.

What to expect from The Block 2015: Triple Threat?

We can’t wait for it to be back and, judging by how many of you read our Block roundups and how many new readers we acquire when it’s on, you do too! Love it or hate it, you tune in, right?! The Block is great for Interiors Addict and we can’t help getting hooked, even when we get a little over the challenges and the drama at times. You can’t beat those room reveals. Bring back Sunday nights and judging controversy, I say!

So, what do we know about the next series, coming early next year, so far? It’s in Melbourne again (boo!) and it’s called Triple Threat. That’s because the new couples will be up against three pairs of former contestants: Bec and George, Matt and Kim and Dee and Darren (can I get a pantomine-style boooooooooooo?!). The public’s reaction to the choice of former contestants making a comeback has been mixed to say the least, especially with Dee and her less then friendly comments (remember when she called Shaynna a bogan?!) fresh in viewers’ minds! But this is reality TV, let’s not forget that. If everyone got on swimmingly that would probably be very dull, despite everyone’s comments to the contrary. I’d put money on many of those I’ve seen commenting on The Block Facebook Page that they will be boycotting the show because of the Double Ds’ return will secretly be tuning in and getting their knickers in a twist!

We haven’t heard much from Matt and Kim recently, although they did appear on their own Domestic Blitz show, Matt and Kim to the Rescue recently and Matt tells me they have lots of exciting things in the pipeline this year. We’ll be sharing one of their most recent design projects on the blog later this week, in fact, so stay tuned! Bec of Bec and George launched her own blog  at the end of 2013 and the popular pair have been busy with their own renovations. Bec also recently announced a style consultant role for Nostra Homes. Of course, both these couples went head to head on The Block Sky High. As for Dee and Darren, they’ve barely had a chance to recharge their batteries since losing Glass House to lovable Shannon and Simon in October.

They’ve started introducing the new couples too. Ayden and Jess are parents of two and he’s a big Scotty fan.

Ebony and Luke are the first ever brother and sister sibling duo on The Block. About time really!

We’ll bring you more as and when we hear it! In other Block news, former contestants Dale and Sophie have had a baby boy called Van and judge Shaynna Blaze totally rocked it with a singing performance at Melbourne’s Carols by Candlelight, looking amazing.

Darren and Dee are back in The Block Triple Threat!

So, did you see the big news? We’re privy to a bit of Block gossip around these parts and I’ve been hearing things about returning contestants for months, but none of it quite added up. Then tonight it was revealed that controversial Darren and Dee from the last series are back, alongside Matt and Kim from Sky High and Bec and George from the 2013 main series. Interesting choices… I’m not at all surprised at the choice to bring back ‘the Double Ds’ for a bit of drama as let’s face it, it’s reality TV and everyone loves to hate (I’m not sure I’ve forgiven bad loser Dee for calling Shaynna a bogan, but still). Bec and George were very popular contestants and Matt and Kim, well, who could forget that Jackson Pollock-inspired “crime scene” room?!

578962-5cb3ecde-71f4-11e4-be8f-bede1d9ce397

Only one of the three couples will get to play against the new couples, who have yet to be announced, though. I wonder how they’ll pick? I smell a challenge…

The hate talk about Darren and Dee has already started on the official Block Facebook Page (gosh, it’s a nasty, nasty place and if I were a judge or contestant I would never look at what the general public have to say!) with many saying they’ll refuse to watch. I don’t buy it though. Like I said, people love to hate…

I’ll be watching, of course — I always do — and bringing you the latest each and every week. Good job my sidekick (and serious Block fan) Olivia Shead will be back from her travels soon to help me!

The next series, currently filming in Melbourne, is expected to start airing early in the New Year, Let’s hope it’s not too far away.

Shaynna Blaze talks window fashions from Selling Houses Australia

Sponsored by Luxaflex Window Fashions.

The LifeStyle Channel’s hit series Selling Houses Australia, has wrapped its seventh and biggest season yet and is already gearing up for another! Interior designer Shaynna Blaze provided practical advice for Australians navigating their way through the real estate market, from a million dollar waterfront mansion, a historic country pub and every home in-between that no one can sell and no one wants to buy.

Luxaflex Window Fashions, the leading blind manufacturer in Australia, was a major sponsor, providing a variety of custom-made window fashion solutions throughout the series. I caught up with them to provide some of the show’s highlights, and offer some practical advice on the best window fashions solution for your requirements, whether you’re looking for privacy, light, energy-efficiency or innovation. Here’s a few of my favourite picks from the season:

1. The ”waterfront wreck” from Gray’s Point had no proper bathroom, no balustrade on the balcony, no steps on the front door, and with a reserve of $1.4 million, it was in need of a major makeover! Shaynna requested Silhouette Shadings to soften the look and light in the bedrooms. I love these shades because soft vanes are suspended between two sheer fabrics, which can be opened for a full, soft focus view, closed for privacy, or tilted for the perfect light control. The white fabric on the back reduces glare and UV rays, whilst ensuring an uninterrupted view from the inside out.

Luxaflex Silhouette Shadings - Gray's Point

In this episode, she also installed Roller Blinds in the bathroom, in a new fabric called Atmosphere Translucent, featuring Sanitized® Antimicrobial Protection, which effectively reduces the development of bacteria, odour and mildew – ideal for bathrooms, particularly waterfront properties!

LUXAFLEX® Atmosphere Translucent - Grays Point

2. Recognised as one of the most energy efficient window coverings on the Australian market, Duette Shades feature a unique honeycomb structure, creating cells which trap air and act as insulation for your windows. The Duette Architella Shades Shaynna chose for a property in Monterey, NSW feature a neutral appearance from the outside, while on the inside, can feature one of many modern colours and evolving designer fabric ranges. In this instance, Shaynna chose a Duo-Lite design option combining Elan Translucent and Blockout Fabric in Linen colour, on the one shade, for the ultimate in versatility, privacy and light control. Other than keeping this front-facing family room warm in winter and cool in summer, one of the reasons I love this window fashion is because the 100% polyester fabrics are anti-static, repelling dust, and in most circumstances, light dusting with a feather duster is all the cleaning that is needed to keep clean! (Click here to see how the energy-efficient Luxaflex Duette Range of Shades work.)

Luxaflex Duette Shades - Monterey

3. Effective interior design means having a look that combines functionality and versatility, and Luxaflex Pirouette Shadings deliver just that – the functionality of privacy and a controlled view all in one, with a beautiful fabric appearance. Shaynna chose Pirouette Shadings for a property in Greenwich, NSW, to provide privacy in the small bedroom. The Pirouette Shadings feature soft, horizontal fabric vanes attached to a single sheer backing, controlling light and allowing you to look out in a new unique way that doesn’t compromise on privacy. With a sophisticated look inside, the sheer back of the Pirouette also offers functionality by way of reducing glare and harmful UV rays.

LUXAFLEX® PIROUETTE®Shadings - Greenwich 2

In the parents’ retreat, Shaynna chose roller blinds, which are suitable for small, large, narrow or even bay windows. In this instance, they are operated with a classic chain drive, but the whisper quiet Qmotion remote control motorised option is also convenient and affordable. QMotion Technology includes durable batteries hidden in the roller tube, meaning there’s no need for an expensive electrician!

Season 8 of Selling Houses Australia will premiere on Foxtel’s The LifeStyle Channel in early 2015.

The eight-piece collection, which is proudly 100% Australian designed and made, draws its inspiration from a time of elegance and grace. With Audrey Hepburn as its muse, it has a colour palette of snow whites, stone neutrals and calming blues, a true balance of inherent softness and refined detail. “Elegant Muse is a range I designed through my love of classics and wanting to create a timeless range,” explains Shaynna. “It is a balance between structure and support and a gentle softness to entice you to sit and never leave. It’s the small details that make all the difference; detailed stitching like an elegant suit and fine arms and legs to drape over with elegance and grace.”

The high drama Block Glasshouse terrace reveals

OMG, I  don’t know about you but I got seriously high blood pressure watching last night’s terrace reveals. Agh! So much work to do, Keith handing out extra work and stopping plans in their tracks at every turn and serious amounts of tantrums, tears and rain. Nightmare! Apart from Max and Karstan of course, who seemed pretty chilled about everything! So it’s really quite staggering that the end results were, in the main, so slick and impressive. I’m amazed that four out of five couples finished, let alone anything else!

Carlene & Michael: 2nd place

H1 Rm9 C&M Terrace EA 27

“How good is this?” and “Incredible,” were Shaynna’s words, followed by a “wow” from Darren. The judges all loved the timber cladding. Neale said the exposed brick in the indoor living area which he initially had misgivings about now made total sense in the context of the outdoor area. Darren said it felt like an urban oasis and Shaynna was amazed they’d achieved so much in just seven days, thinking of everything. Despite being close to the street, Neale said it had a feeling of seclusion which was perfect. It was going so very well until they “forgot” to put Max & Karstan’s ugly pipe lamp in their room for judging, as per the rules, losing them a point. When it came to the small upstairs terrace, Neale was in love again, calling it a real gem. The outdoor shower and vertical garden also went down well. “Michael and Carlene have a phenomenal apartment, ” said Shaynna, with Darren adding: “They’re sitting on a goldmine.” And just to finish it off, Neale declared they’d nailed it.

H1 Rm9 C&M Terrace EA 28

Get Carlene & Michael’s look: Haman indigo cushion, pom pom magenta cushions, Emmett copper pendants, replica Fermob Luxembourg counter stool, replica Fermob Luxembourg chair, Outdeco Gardenscreen Cumulus, Kalahari outdoor beanbags.

Chris & Jenna: last place

H2 Rm9 C&J Terrace EA 17

With their not one but two terraces, Chris & Jenna were falling seriously behind. Even Keith took pity on them and chose to muck in and help. Bless, what a secret softie! Not that it went down well with some of the other contestants… Nothing could stop the overwhelming reality of the sheer amount of work though, resulting in tears and domestics. With two unfinished rooms in a row you couldn’t help but feel sorry for them and nobody wants to see a man cry (poor Chris!).

While they were probably expecting the worst, Neale was very complimentary about the ivy wall and what they’d managed to achieve, creatively, on a budget. Shaynna commended them for picking themselves up each week and really trying but couldn’t ignore what hadn’t been finished but “damn well good on them!”). Neale said despite it not being finished you could see it was going to be really strong. The generous comments ended when the judges got upstairs to the rooftop however! The huge TV got plenty of criticism for being ugly and impractical. “Downstairs I could forgive them a lot but up here really doesn’t work,” summed up Neale.

H2 Rm9 C&J Terrace EA 15

Get Chris & Jenna’s look: Sky blue outdoor scatter cushion, tangerine outdoor pillow cushion, steel hexagon with hanging bromeliad plant, Fluid Hoshi Design in limestone, Oracular Design Planter in limestone, Geometric Divine Design Planter in limestone,  Geometric Divine Design Tealight in limestone.

Max & Karstan: 3rd place

The Block in Melbourne

All the judges agreed the couple’s room was warm, cohesive and tied in well with the apartment. Darren loved the remote control blinds and the hanging plants. Neale said the vertical garden was one of the best examples he’d seen yet and that the terrace had made a massive difference in finishing off the apartment, which in previous weeks had been criticised for being too cold and clinical. These two did lose a point though for not incorporating Dee and Darren’s hideous trumpet lights!

The Block in Melbourne

Get Max & Karstan’s look: Vertiscape green wall modules, Pop & Scott pots, Pop plant hanging string garden kit, Outdeco Gardenscreen Marakesh black.

Shannon & Simon: 4th place

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 19

The boys seemed to have one hurdle after another to overcome this week but, in their usual style, remained good humoured! But the judges couldn’t agree on the space. While Darren and Neale loved the hanging and other pots, Shaynna hated them and said they didn’t fit with the rest of the apartment. Neale said it just fell short of being absolutely brilliant while Shaynna said it was borderline boring. Owch! Neale’s hipster’s terrace was Shaynna’s abandoned warehouse! The boys also lost a point for not incorporating Michael and Carlene’s lamp.

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 33

Get Shannon & Simon’s look: Radial wall mural, wire powdercoated chairs, wire bar stools, steel macrame net.

Dee & Darren: WINNERS!

H5 Rm9 D&D Terrace EA 5

You’ve got to agree, the double Ds’ idea to create a mezzanine with city views was GENIUS. Neale and Shaynna agreed it was like a little Tuscan retreat. Neale said every now and again, more is more! As usual, the styling got big compliments. Neale said he couldn’t remember the last time he saw an apartment which was totally holistic in the way it came together. Darren got so excited when he spotted the mezzanine and ran up to check out the city views, saying you could happily sit their quietly, completely removed from the hustle and bustle of life. Shaynna said it was the sort of wow factor that would create a bidding war. Again, they lost a point though for not incorporating Chris and Jenna’s disco vertical garden. What a surprise!

The Block in Melbourne

Get Dee & Darren’s look: medium lantern, mini lantern, rustic pine reclaimed coffee table, Maine botanical cushion, 3-piece outdoor setting,  adjustable wall spotlight in copper,

After the terrace judging, in true Block style, came the big surprise that the next two weeks would be spent doing the sixth apartment between them all, with those creating winning rooms getting to take cash off their reserve prices. Will be interesting seeing all the couples working together to achieve one cohesive home. Eek!  Can’t wait for next week!

The Block Glasshouse living and dining rooms

After last week’s kitchen reveals, fantastic as they were, I was ready for some soft furnishings this week, so living/dining reveals were just the thing! In my mind, the winners were Max and Karstan and Darren and Dee, but the judges didn’t agree, with Michael and Carlene taking out the top spot. It was a disappointing week for the boys, whose dwindling budget saw them produce a room the judges found didn’t match up to the rest of their apartment. And for Chris and Jenna, who came fifth, they were more than a little “over it” thanks to the many criticisms of the judges, who they said were being rude, rather than judging. Eek!

MAX AND KARSTAN

H3 Rm7 M&K Living Dining EA 2

Max and Karstan’s reveal started well with a (very macho!) squeal of delight from Darren! They all loved the natural light afforded by the windows and the striking pendant above the dining table (how gorgeous?!). Neale said he absolutely loved the sophisticated palette and look of restrained glamour. Shaynna said the softness of the room capitalised on the natural light. Darren loved the recessed carpet (genius!) and said it was elegant and a break from the concrete floor. Neale went on to say the look was upmarket and he couldn’t find anything he didn’t like! The custom concrete table also went down very well with all the judges.

H3 Rm7 M&K Living Dining EA 1

Get Max and Karstan’s look: Alexia dining chair, Juno Scandi 3-seater and 2-seater sofas, Palma round coffee table, Palma side table, Gus GT rocking chair, Cintemani pendant, Edge 1 light single drop pendant, Just The Two of Us by Thierry B artwork.

SIMON AND SHANNON

H4 Rm7 S&S Living Dining EA 10

This one didn’t get off to a good start with “the weird corner under the stairs” not going down well with Darren. Neale was immediately underwhelmed, saying some parts were extremely high end, like the floor, but others were low budget and he didn’t like the art. Darren did however. “It jars with the rest of the apartment,” said Neale. And Darren and Shaynna criticised the too-small rug in the living area. And as for the pullout clothes line? I’m not sure anyone knows why they thought that was a good idea!

H4 Rm7 S&S Living Dining MP 7453M-processed

Get Simon and Shannon’s look: Masai artwork, Sean Dix Forte round glass coffee table, Sean Dix Forte glass dining table, Block 2-print set, Nice View print, replica Eames DSW chair, Florida lamp, Jacob oak floor lamp, Audrey table lamp, Shelley Panton salad bowl.

CHRIS AND JENNA

The Block in Melbourne

Well, it’s probably no surprise Chris and Jenna felt so hard done by this week with all the criticism over this room, but I do think they could have been a little less whingey about it. Easy for me to say though, eh?! All the judges said they didn’t like seeing the study nook as soon as they walked in. Darren was really upset about the badly finished paintwork and the mess, right down to the dusty desk which hadn’t been wiped before styling items on it. Shaynna took exception to the “random” low shelf and suggested they remove it. All that before they even got to the living/dining area proper! The timber dining table was a hit (phew!) with Darren calling it amazing and Shaynna calling it divine. Shaynna thought the pendant above it though, although nice, was too small and felt miserly. The judges liked the lamp, couch and chair but felt they didn’t work well together. Neale said the room lacked soul and Shaynna said it had no mood at all. Ouch! Neale said nothing about the room made him want to stay there. Oh, and the dining chairs wouldn’t fit under the table…

Get Chris and Jenna’s look: Opaque black shadows pendants, Geo oval coffee table, Mia armchair, Juno armchair, Harlequin custom sofa, wine rack dining table, recycled timber pew, Frame lamp with custom shade, throw rug with fringe.

DEE AND DARREN

The Block in Melbourne

I was a big fan of this room. I mean, it has a massive Bromley and French oak herringbone floors?! Gorgeous! Shaynna remarked on the beautiful styling and Neale said the parquetry floor was an absolute winner. The compliments stopped there from Neale though, who said he had been expecting something more and that everything was fighting with the Bromley art. His least favourite thing though was the over-styled under stairs space. I have to agree it looked a bit wrong, but overall, I loved this look. Darren said the space was beautiful and exceptionally well considered.

H5 Rm7 D&D Living Dining EA 29

Get Dee and Darren’s look: Enzo 1 Light floor lamp, black lantern, Labaratory samphire candle, Easy Luxury, Simple Conservatory dining table, Great Gig limited edition print by Prudence Caroline.

MICHAEL AND  CARLENE: WINNERS!

The Block in Melbourne

It was a case of last but not least for winners Michael and Carlene and their impressive bookcase! It started well with the computer-controlled lights and just kept getting better. The judges all cooed over the chair with the small table (which they realised could be move and added onto the end of the dining table when required for extra seating — clever!) and Neale said they had a great eye. Onto the impressive cabinetry and Neale said it was the first time he had seen a bookcase styled properly on the show. Darren was impressed by the way they’d styled op shop finds by colour coding and paying attention to size and scale. Neale said they’d created a very homely environment but he feared the exposed brick wall would be polarising. Shaynna disagreed saying it would appeal to many buyers. She wasn’t a fan of the too-blingy pendant light though and said it should go. Agreed!

Shaynna Blaze’s 10 Commandments of Colour

Picking a colour to paint your home isn’t easy. In fact, for 70 percent of the nation it can be so daunting that they just choose white. Boring! But Taubmans want to change that so they’ve launched two new digital tools: the Paint Your Own Room tool and Shaynna Blaze’s 10 Commandments of Colour, in the hope that Australians will embrace adding that little splash of colour to their home.

Shaynna Blaze Blank Canvas

The 10 Commandments of Colour were created to help give consumers the confidence to get started on their DIY projects this Spring. Written by Taubmans brand ambassador and colour creative director Shaynna Blaze, it features the 10 tips that debunk common colour myths and arm consumers with the knowledge they need to get painting with colour right, every time!

“It always surprises me how many homeowners resort to painting with white despite the catalogue of over 5,500 Taubmans paint shades available,” explains Shaynna. “It’s obvious that, despite Australia’s vibrant culture, people lack the confidence to use colour in their homes. It’s my mission to provide DIY novices with a better understanding of how colour can transform a space. By breaking down the paint selection process into simple steps, my 10 Commandments of Colour help people to tackle their fear of colour head-on and feel empowered to choose the perfect colour for their home.”

The visual guide (see below) provides quick and easy rules to follow when selecting a paint colour. Colour theory is broken down into bite-sized tips, including how to manipulate a space with colour, getting the colour proportions right and choosing the correct colour combinations for your home.

Once consumers have narrowed their selection using the 10 Commandments of Colour, they can head to the Taubmans website to virtually test out colours in their room using the Paint Your Own Room tool. This allows users to upload an image of the room that they plan to paint and digitally re-colour the walls with the hue of their choice.

Taubmans is also offering personal colour consulting services on the weekends of the 4 and 11 of October at 50 Bunnings stores. Visit their website to find the dates and locations or to download the 10 Commandments of Colour, try out the Paint Your Own Room tool and discover more expert decorating tips and tricks.

The Block Glasshouse: Staircase, laundry & powder room reveals

Well, it’s week five and I finally got to watch The Block room reveals for myself, since returning from our six-month trip last Monday. Gosh, I’ve missed my Block fix and I wasn’t disappointed. Michael and Carlene’s efforts, which won, definitely impressed me most. Let’s take a look at all the couples’ rooms and where you can shop their looks, whoever your favourites are.

Carlene and Michael

The Block in Melbourne

The judges spent plenty of time in their space, which eventually won, because there were so many details to look at. Neale said that the metallic details were very on trend but he likes how they’d no gone overboard and just used touches. Shaynna said it was very unusual (in a good way) and Neale called it really beautiful. They all agreed Michael and Carlene had set a really high benchmark and created off the shelf luxury. A great start to the episode!

Darren and Shaynna are still undecided on whether creating the void was a good idea and Neale found the stairs looked a little too heavy. It got so much worse when they went into the laundry and powder room though. “Oh my God, what happened?” was Neale’s reaction. Oh dear. Darren said it wasn’t working and Neale added there were angles and hard lines everywhere and it just wasn’t working. Shaynna went as far as to say she couldn’t believe the choices they’d made. The “disco benches” in the laundry failed to impress either and were branded dated.

They were not off to a great start with their staircase, enclosed by a glass wall. Neale said it felt small and constrained, Shaynna said she didn’t mind it and Darren thought it lacked warmth. More significantly though, Darren pointed out that it was high maintenance (dark steps and glass wall will show every mark) and the lack of hand rail was actually dangerous. Darren loved the lights in the bathroom and called them amazing. Neale however, said he felt ambivalent and that the design was too generic and not exciting. Darren agreed the palette was a little dated. Shaynna said it felt clinical but it did tick all the boxes. Neale said buyers would be looking for something more.

Darren and Deanne

The Block in Melbourne

Poor Darren and Deanne and their unfinished staircase, bathroom and laundry! It was never going to be a winner or get a great reaction. Darren was at least kind enough to say the staircase design was simple and elegant. Neale said the bathroom and laundry were more like the Darren and Deanne they knew but he couldn’t ignore how unfinished they were and they had to judge on what they saw. Darren said it wasn’t what he expected to see from a couple who had so far been so strong and consistent. He said he loved the tapware, handle and colour palette choices.

The boys certainly did well this week. Shaynna and Neale both loved the staircase on first glance, with Darren adding that it had the same elements as Max and Karstan’s but because of its shape, was more interesting and appealing. Shaynna said the bathroom felt balanced. The judges loved it and said it was much more successful than their upstairs bathroom. Neale said it would appeal to the design savvy, urban, sophisticated buyer.

What did you think of the scores? There seems to be a lot of backlash from the public who think Darren and Deanne were scored too highly considering how unfinished their rooms were. What did YOU think?

Bathrooms The Block

Get the look: The Block Glasshouse main bathroom reveals that wowed the judges

It was a pretty big call to have the main bathrooms done so early in the series and to be honest I was a little concerned after an unfinished room last week. But boy, the Blockheads didn’t disappoint! All their main bathrooms were stunning!

MC01

Let’s start with Michael and Carlene’s main bathroom. How amazing are those white glossy tiles in a herringbone pattern against the darker ones? Marble: need I say more? Neale was a fan of another beautiful tall door and said it had a real sense of theatre. Shaynna (and her all-important storage test) was impressed with the built-in drawers, however she thought the lights needed to come down. Shaynna was also concerned about the practicality of the shower with the steps being slippery (and I would have to agree). Neale said the bathroom says confidence and I have to agree; these two are ones to watch.

MC02

CJ01

As I write this, I am still trying to get my head around the fact it’s only week two of The Block and Chris and Jenna actually delivered this room. It’s out of control! I am in love! It is a fine example of bathroom perfection and they most definitely deserved the perfect score they received from the judges. I love the fact that it has direct access to the guest bedroom, the wet room style shower area and the light box. You can tell a lot of thought and planning went into this one.

Shaynna’s mouth dropped wide open, she said it felt enormous and I have to agree. She called it the perfect Melbourne outdoor shower as you’re inside but it feels like the outdoors. Darren said the cabinetry was perfect (you would want to it to be with Chris being a cabinet maker). Neale said it was truly world class and a million dollar bathroom.

CJ02

Get Chris & Jenna’s look: pendant light, hand wash.

MK01

Max and Karstan’s bathroom felt enormous, Neale liked that they kept the styling sophisticated. Shaynna was lost for words and when she found them she said it was mind blowing! I thought the double access to the linen cupboard was sheer genius and storage queen Shaynna loved it! The judges were concerned there was no under floor heating or matt tiles but all agreed it was a great bounce back from last week.

MK02

Get Max and Karstan’s look: pendant lights, storage basket, set of towels.

SS01

Last week’s winners Simon and Shannon’s vanity got a big wow from all three judges; they also loved the heated floor. However practical Shaynna found the power points awkward and the judges didn’t like that the cistern wasn’t concealed. Neale said it was a lovely contemporary bathroom but something didn’t feel quite right. I liked the boys bathroom and feel it has that contemporary hotel bathroom vibe but there just wasn’t anything I loved from it. What did you think, given they won last week?

SS02

Get Simon and Shannon’s look: copper baskets, side table, towels.

DD01

I loved Darren and Deanne’s vanity and mirror and that pendant hanging over the bath tub framed by that gorgeous window. Neale said it was a beautiful bathroom and it was a combo of the pendant, window and tiles on the floor. Darren said it was a combo of everything (you could tell he really loved this bathroom). Neale said it was an urban classic aesthetic that was new to The Block and I have to agree, I like that they are bringing a different look to the show.

DD02

Get Darren and Deanne’s look: pendant light, mirror, pixel towels, soap dish.

Main bathroom week is never easy, there is a lot of pressure as you need to set the scene for the remaining bathrooms you’ve got to do. There were some big scores this week! I’m so glad Chris & Jenna smashed it with a perfect score of 30 out of 30 as they deserved it! That bathroom looks like it’s from the pages of a magazine.

Did you agree with the judges? Whose bathroom was your favourite this week?

If there’s something you liked that’s not mentioned here, you can get more looks from all the couples’ rooms at The Block Shop.

Shaynna Blaze on how to use Pantone’s Radiant Orchid in your home

By Shaynna Blaze

Earlier this year, Radiant Orchid was named as the 2014 Pantone Colour of the Year and it certainly ruffled some feathers with many (including Interiors Addict’s Jen!) questioning the bold choice of colour. Whether you love it, or are yet to be convinced, here are my tips for confidently incorporating the bold shades of purple into your interior colour scheme.

Purple has always been a colour of contention as some love it and others really don’t. I’ve heard a lot of talk of people fearing this new colour direction or being lost for how to make this work in their home. With any new trend it takes a while for people to embrace it, so in the spirit of embracing change, here are some of my suggestions for how to incorporate the purple jewel tones into your interior palette.

Recently, I have been talking a lot about using ‘grown up’ pastels in interior colour schemes and purple provides the depth of colour required for such a scheme, as it’s dramatic and rich, which adds punch.

There are two ways to incorporate such a bold colour into your home. You can either use it as an accent/feature colour in a room or be brave and use it on your walls as a bold statement. I’ll demonstrate this by looking at the same room but using the colour in two different ways:

As an accent colour:

The introduction of a new trend colour doesn’t mean you have to redecorate a room from scratch. You can alter the look of a room by adding accessories in various purple colours. As you can see in the picture, the bottles and accents on the cushions are a purple colour, beautifully accompanying Taubmans Endure Bald Mountain on the walls. This is an easy way of leaning gently into a new trend.

As a bold wall colour:

If you’re feeling bold you can paint your walls in Taubmans Balloon Pop. The use of neutral white, black and charcoal in the furnishings such as the couch, rug and mirrored tables allows you to be more adventurous with your wall colour and accessories. With this bold wall colour, you may choose to remove the bottles and instead have a small vase of flowers and replace the patterned cushions for textured ones in more neutral tones.

In order to embrace a bold colour, you need to know which colours it complements. There are two ways to approach it:

Select colours of a similar hue:

The first way is to select a colour that is in a similar tone to your starting colour, such as Taubmans Ellie May Rose, Taubmans Leaden Sky and Taubmans Spring Mauve. Using these colours in a lower intensity makes them blend together, creating a more harmonious look.

Taubmans Ellie May Rose, Leaden Sky and Spring Mauve

Choose a cool colour:

For a more dramatic look, you can choose a cool colour like Taubmans Grand Gusto and Taubmans Blueberry Bush with accents in Taubmans Crisp White. This colour palette creates a fresh and impactful colour scheme for your interior.

When using complementary colours, the key to creating the perfect look is to use the colours in different proportions, so one colour is dominant and the other is an accent. For example, you may decide to have your walls in Taubmans Leaden Sky and then introduce the trend colour through painting a chair in Taubmans Balloon Pop.

For those who love a crisp look, you can paint your walls in Taubmans Crisp White and accent the room with artwork and cushions in different shades of purple.

The most important thing to remember is that trend colours are supposed to be a starting point for inspiration to bring to life your perfect interior scheme, not to create colour stress. Embrace it!

Take the Taubmans decorating challenge and fall back in love with your home

Taubmans has uncovered that our nation is stuck deep in a home decorating rut. The vast majority of Australians (80%) would like to change their home’s appearance, and 57% don’t use certain rooms as much as they would like to as a result.

A before and after paint job
A before and after paint job

The study of 1,000 Australian homeowners found that a quarter (24%) of people try to hide rooms away behind closed doors when visitors arrive, and 31% claim that their spare room has become a useless dumping ground. It seems that our unsightly homes are dampening our mood, with more than two thirds (67%) confirming that having a room that needs redecorating has a negative impact on how they feel. The most common emotions dragging people down are frustration that they don’t use the room enough (40%) and embarrassment when guests see the offending space (23%).

To lift the nation out of this depressing rut, Taubmans and Shaynna Blaze are launching the Taubmans Endure Paint Challenge to encourage Australians to get off the couch and make the change they wish to see in their home. “Refreshing décor is a positive mood-lifter and gives people more pride in their home, as when it looks better, it inevitably feels better,” advises Shaynna, Taubmans’ creative director and brand ambassador.

“Redecorating can seem like a time-intensive and tedious task, but with just a lick of colourful paint you can quickly and easily give your home a much-needed facelift, without breaking the bank,” Shaynna adds.

The challenge aims to demystify home decoration and help Australians with the process of painting, from that initial spark of creativity to the final coat by providing everything they need – from inspiration and equipment, to fail safe colour palettes and expert tips.

Participation in the Taubmans Endure Paint Challenge involves a few simple steps:

  1. Register at www.taubmans.com.au to take part
  2. Buy a can of Taubmans Endure from Bunnings and keep your receipt
  3. Paint either an interior or exterior wall of your home, at least two square meters in size, using Taubmans Endure
  4. Upload a before and after photo of your painting project to complete your entry, by 26 April 2014.

As an added incentive to pick up the paint brush, there are over $150,000 in prizes to be won, including $500 Bunnings vouchers for the first 100 entries, major cash prizes of $12,500 each and a money-can’t-buy grand prize of a photoshoot and magazine spread, featuring the winning interior and exterior makeovers.

Bedrooms The Block

Get the look: Last night’s Block guest bedroom reveals

How impressive were last night’s guest bedroom reveals on The Block?! I actually really liked all the rooms and wouldn’t have liked to have had to pick the winner. But Kyal and Kara were the chosen couple and I did think their room was fantastic.

After slamming their water feature last week, the judges couldn’t believe they were seeing the same couple’s styling this week. Neale Whitaker said it felt clean and modern, in keeping with the loft environment and that the colour palette was perfectly restrained. Darren Palmer said the pair were at their best this week and that all the little things were done beautifully and that he was proud of their styling progress following his masterclass as they’d taken on board all his tips.

I think my own favourite this week was Chantelle and Steve’s room. It was certainly a strong week for those fans! I loved their brave parquetry wall feature, as did the judges. Neale said it was incredible and Darren said the room had real style to it. Shaynna loved the storage and the way the Art Deco features had been brought up to date. Their only real negative was about the antlers, which Neale called clichéd. I have to agree. I’m a bit over antlers!

chantelle and steve 1

I love rooms which are more than just a white box when you remove the furniture, yet still clean looking enough to work with different kinds of furniture. On that front, I thought these couples, and Alisa and Lysandra with their exposed brick, really delivered.

Now onto my favourite twins, Alisa and Lysandra. I loved their room too, and the fact they experimented with colour this week. The girls had the most mixed judges’ comments of everyone. Neale really loved their new design direction and their light sconces, while Shaynna Blaze — who the girls say judge them the harshest — said the look was too ‘in your face’ and would alienate some buyers.

Darren loved the lighting and the look but pointed out the position of the artwork wasn’t practical for sitting up in bed. And what did you think of that artwork (Portrait of Amy Winehouse After Klimt by Sue Quinn)? I loved it.

Get Lisa & Lysandra’s look: pair of stick sconces by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $299, Bindi bright throw by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $49.95.

Last but not least, Brad and Dale impressed the judges by being in touch with their feminine side this week, although Neale didn’t like the colour palette and found it too primary and clichéd. Shaynna loved the storage but said the colour was too dark and the hanging rail was impractically high. Darren said the look was soft and beautiful.

Shaynna Blaze on how to draw inspiration from everyday life to create an interior you love

Shaynna Blaze is passionate about colour and how it can transform the home. In her role with Taubmans, she is committed to helping Australians unlock their personal colour stories, by using inspiration from their day-to-day lives and creating interiors that reflect their personal style. Here, Shaynna shares her top 5 tips for drawing inspiration from everyday life — the colours you love, the places you go, the style of your home and the accessories you already own – to create a personalised interior colour scheme you love.

Be inspired by nature

Spring is a natural time to draw inspiration from the botanic world, but I’m encouraging people to look at the colours and textures of all the seasons and climates to get inspired and create a personal theme.

Tropical Dew

For this look I was inspired by the sense of calm and relaxation from holidaying in the tropics, and wanted to bring the same energy to the living space. Green is known for its relaxing qualities, and I layered the greens from a dark shade down to a light yellow to give the interior a feeling of summer and holiday. Using pops of bright yellow adds an extra layer of energy to a room, in contrast to the calming green.
