Illustrator Megan Hess designs penthouse in first interiors job

Internationally renowned fashion illustrator Megan Hess is making the move to interiors, styling one of the two luxurious penthouses at Mirvac’s Array in Melbourne’s Yarra’s Edge precinct.

ARRAY by Hess living hero image_1 interiors addict

Briefed to create something elegant, contemporary and chic, Megan will select all of the penthouse’s interiors including artwork, furnishings and homewares. She will also be creating a range of bespoke pieces, consisting of wallpaper and cushions, which will bring her fashion illustrations to life.

Famed for her work on the Sex and the City book cover and with huge names such as Chanel, Dior and Vanity Fair, a move into interiors is something Megan’s been building towards for quite some time. “Bringing my illustrations to life in a physical space and creating a home that feels like a living work of art was always going to be the natural next step to me. To be given such a beautiful blank canvas and free rein to create a high fashion home above Melbourne – a truly chic and artistic city – is a dream come true.”

Mirvac Group’s executive residential director John Carfi, says the partnership with Megan was in response to a strong demand among premium purchasers for exclusive properties that cannot be replicated. “Megan is one of the most coveted and in-demand illustrators in the fashion world. It is a coup to secure her and an honour that her first major interiors project is Array by Mirvac. The Array penthouses will be two of Melbourne’s most incredible properties when complete, offering incredible views of Melbourne’s CBD, and Megan’s touch will elevate it to a new level. We can’t wait to reveal the final product.”

Currently immersed in the design process, Megan and Mirvac will unveil the completed property next year.

Online shopping fix: A Few Good Women

A Few Good Women is must more than an online store! Rather, the social enterprise aims to make doing good easier than ever, by giving away half their profits to good causes, making shopping a genuinely feel-good affair.

a few good women

Alongside their shop, A Few Good Women also has a very active online community. Where, by becoming a member (which is completely free) you can submit stories for the magazine, suggest good women to be featured and good causes to be supported, advertise your own business, collaborate on products and take part in special members-only offers in the shop.

Having recently made their first donation of $1450 to a local not-for-profit, Annie’s Angels, which helps families through difficult times; A Few Good Women is happy to announce that three local families, with small children, have already directly benefitted from this gift. “It’s exactly what we want to be able to do; to make a tangible difference to people’s lives, to help very directly,” explains A Few Good Women’s founder Jacqueline Loughray. “It’s easy, you shop and we give. It doesn’t cost you anything extra. We want good women everywhere to join in, it’s all about working together. It’s exciting, who knows what we might be able to achieve?”

Currently offering a capsule collection of beautiful homewares – the wooden range is hand-made by A Few Good Women themselves in the Southern Highlands – the collection will be growing soon to include other brands and products.

Space Furniture and Megan Morton present WALLPORN

Naming a collection WALLPORN was always going to get my attention, but then to find out style guru Megan Morton and Space Furniture were behind it, well I immediately needed to know everything!

R6d520LTsSHhQ7cOarx7N2pMLCSCxUpqS_VJbJC6o_A

Launching mid-November, just in time for Christmas, WALLPORN is a range of four items for your walls and beautiful tableau, all designed and made in Australia. Created out of Megan’s love of giving presents that are long-lasting investments rather than stocking fillers, she worked with four talented designers to create the incredible designs you won’t see anywhere else.

JQc8-2RV8ZOUjYfVJ7o-5IQWX7uuiB9dsPMdE5ppM4o

The first are the Quartz Objects by artist Phillippa Carnemolla. Having sourced healing quartz pieces from Brazil and then added copper interventions, the objects are ideal as table centers, bookends or paperweights. Not one piece the same, they look powerful solo or incredible in a cluster on your table.

UiQAtAfOlU1kdcTUweCjeSQnOmceIM4WPeB1ZskFekw

The second are the Horstmans Trees by sculptor Dion Horstmans. Known for his energetic work and love of sharp geometry, his limited edition tree interpretation is perfectly represented in these four sculptural pieces that are ideal for the mantel. Beautiful enough to stay up all year, they are the best way to acquire a smaller piece from this talented artist, whose work has now gone far beyond private collections.

yC1GoYCVihYOTDgS4M0yzdnWRfjWEZabPm41DwCKvOY

The third is the Tinted Mirror by multi-disciplinary designer Dan Hockings. In either blue or brown, the tinted hanging mirror sees hand detailing, metal, mirror and leather collide for the ultimate piece to deck your halls. We think it’s the ideal addition to your mantel, representing a Christmas bauble in its shape!

AsnFAnPIhUDIvc41EDNmm1SJLMJKXOoLXDG59Em0UUU

Last but not least, the Stamped Platter by ceramicist Joss Best. Designed to be the ideal platter that every household can use, it is the ideal gift thanks to its hand stamped ‘2014’. Informal in style, the platter will be loved by all those who enjoy entertaining.

All items will be available exclusively through Space Furniture showrooms. For more information.

Aimee Tarulli’s own home inspired her styling career

When Aimee Tarulli was presented with her dream challenge — to design and decorate her new house from scratch — she knew it was time to leave her senior role at an advertising firm and try and get into the competitive world of styling.

aimee tarulli
By Armelle Habib

“I designed and built a new house with my husband Frank, a builder who owns building company Thomas Archer Homes,” explains Aimee. “Going through the whole process of planning the interior design and fit out for our home and then decorating the space, made me think about styling as a potential career. I had so much lovely feedback on my style I thought perhaps I could do this full-time.”

Two years later, Aimee’s dream has come to fruition, working full-time as a stylist, both as a freelancer for Greenhouse Interiors, and running her own interior styling business, Archer Interiors.

Doing a mix of both commercial and interior styling, Aimee loves the variety in her everyday work. “I am mostly involved in commercial photography shoots for Greenhouse Interiors. I love taking a commercial client’s brief and conceptualising the shot, then seeing it all come to life. On the other hand, the work I do for Archer Interiors is mainly private decorating and styling in people’s homes. I love meeting clients and helping them transform their own homes. I have met such lovely people and to see a completed room or home and the joy that brings my clients is just fabulous.”

Originally starting her career as an assistant to Greenhouse Interiors owner Julia Green, Aimee says she is one of her biggest inspirations: “I assisted Julia for over a year and still do if she ever needs an extra pair of hands. There is always something to be learned from every shoot. I adore working with her whenever I can.”

It was also thanks to the skills learned from Julia that Aimee got her first ever solo styling job, for an environmentally-friendly cardboard hotel. From there, Aimee’s career has only grown, having recently done campaigns for Lumiere Art & Co, Clickon Furniture, Goosebumps Bedlinen, and stores Paterson & Steele and Rockferry Homewares. She is also currently working on a huge renovation project in Mont Albert, Melbourne, an experience she is finding incredibly exciting.

All that being said, her biggest milestone still goes back to that first ever project, her own home, which Home Beautiful recently shot for their September issue. “It was such a proud moment to be recognised for my personal interior style and to see my own home come to life in a magazine.”

With such a varied career in only two years of full-time work, Aimee has lots of advice for those wanting to get into the business: “Get as much experience assisting as you can, whatever the job, just go for it. Get as much of your work out there on Instagram. Instagram is a brilliant platform to showcase your style to the world, even if you’re styling simple vignettes in your own home – be creative and get it out there. You never know who may see it.”

A product to keep your interior timber looking brand new

You don’t have to be a design guru to know that timber is having a serious moment! Perfect for adding a touch of nature and warmth to modern interiors, timber is increasingly being seen in more non-traditional ways: from vanities, to benchtops to decorative panelling.

Int - Mosman 003

But like typical decking timber, interior timber benefits from regular care to maintain colour depth and clarity, helping to avoid damage from sunlight, indoor heating and cooling systems, knocks and spills.

A product which can do this is the Sikkens CETOL TSI Satin Plus, which provides a high quality transparent, satin finish that accentuates the grain and texture of all timber species. The oil-alkyd resin formulation is suitable for decoration and protection of soft and hardwoods.

Self-leveling for a smooth, even finish, this nontoxic and easy to clean coating can also protect surfaces exposed to high moisture levels such as bathrooms and saunas.

Sikkens TSI Satin -mosman (crop)

Sikkens CETOL TSI Satin Plus retails for $51.05 and is available from all good paint retailers and major hardware outlets. For a list of stockists visit Sikkens website here.

Online shopping fix: Sourced4You

“He who works with his hands is a labourer,
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman,
But he who works with his hands, his head and his heart is an Artist”
(St Francis of Assisi)

This is the quote that takes pride of place on Sourced4You’s website. Not only is it a beautiful sentiment, but it is also the vision behind the Brisbane-based online homewares store, which sources its handmade items from talented artists from around the world.

soucred4you

With a passion for beautiful things, founder Debbie Changuion, had an idea to source both exquisite items created by artists (with a particular focus on those based in Africa) AND to source skilled artists that aspired to be more than curio vendors.

“We help them to create more contemporary items and provide them with a public that values their work and is growing more conscious of the importance of where something comes from and why it was made,” explains Debbie. “We have combined our experiences from living around the world to bring you a range of handmade, unique products for your home. The magic is in the detail, the small quirks and the fact that they are created by real people. The slight imperfection is where we see its true beauty, the real story!”

Featuring beautiful and functional everyday objects, from tableware to lighting to homewares, these items are often sourced from remote areas and provide the guarantee that no friend of yours will have it. Sourced4You also has their own range, IKHAYA, which features everything from ceramic jugs to faux ox heads!

As the two-time winner of Belle Coco Republic’s Interior Designer of the Year Award, in our eyes, Greg Natale can do no wrong! And now, as he turns his attention to furniture, he continues to create high quality timeless work, collaborating with Stylecraft for his compact collection of furniture, Chest by Greg Natale. As if having his first book due out in November wasn’t exciting enough!

Greg Natale
Greg Natale

“I’ve been a fan of Stylecraft products for many years,” explains Greg. “I have always wanted to design for them. It is an honour to team up with them on this collection.”

Stylecraft, with 60 years in the furniture business, is the go-to place for original and contemporary pieces produced in Australia and around the world. Greg’s range continues in this vein, with his vintage-inspired compact sofa collection being the essence of contemporary appeal and livability.

08

02

Made in Australia from the finest quality oak by renowned local manufacturer Woodmark, it merges classic lines and modern lifestyle, something that Greg believes is very relevant to the current market. “I wanted this collection to be soft and liveable,” he adds. “I love timber, and those angled lines of the fifties really resonate today.”

05

From a sofa, matching lounge chairs and deeply inviting armchairs to a feature credenza and signature coffee tables, the collection showcases the passion, precision and attention to detail which Greg is famous for. Balancing those pieces are curved, nesting side tables that bring an eclectic, sculptural element to the mix. Suitable for home, office and hotel fit-outs, these designs open the door to simple, sophisticated living.

Chest by Greg Natale will be launched on Saturday 23 August 2014 at Melbourne Indesign.

Covet my coffee table: with Juliet Love & Charlie Albone

Today’s coffee table comes to you from the home of stylist and TV presenter Juliet Love of Love Style, and her husband Charlie Albone, landscape gardener and star of Selling Houses Australia.

192136-juliet-love-and-charlie-albone

Earlier this year, they moved with their young son Leo to a new family home in country NSW, with plenty of gardens to keep Charlie busy!

juliet love 1

“Every item on our table has special meaning, from the silver Christofle tray which was a wedding gift and is engraved with our names and wedding date, to the turquoise egg in the nest which I gave to the guests at my baby shower for Leo, to the driftwood which my parents found on the beach when they were married,” Juliet explains.

“We have an acre of gardens on our property so the book about rural gardens provides some inspiration for that. Also, Charlie worked with the author Myles Baldwin, at the Australian Garden Show last year. The bonsai is just because I like to have living plants in the house, and I’m particularly into bonsai at the moment — I love their architectural shape. The mini ornamental ashtray with the horse is from Zara Home from a recent trip to Hong Kong.

juliet love 2

“Our coffee table is constantly changing (I can’t help myself, most flat surfaces in our home have some kind of ever-evolving display!) but this is how it is at the moment.”

The cushions on the sofa are from Pottery Barn and Willa Sky Home on Etsy.

Check out Juliet and Charlie’s work at Love Style and Inspired Exteriors. View all the other coffee tables in this regular feature.
