Gorgeous antique & vintage children’s beds from Little French

With the world of children’s furniture and homewares an ever-expanding one, it takes a bit to catch our eye these days but Little French’s gorgeous children’s beds certainly did. The creation of Josephine Hendricks, the company source their adorable range of antique and vintage beds through auctions and secondhand stores, before restoring them in a most beautiful and understated way.

LIttleFrench08

A demographer and retail analyst by trade, Josephine hatched her business plan upon the birth of her third child. “Since having my first child I have been playing with various escapes from my corporate role, but it wasn’t until having my third that I resigned and I guess, truly allowed myself the time to consider an alternative career,” says Josephine, who has very fond memories of her first bed as a child. “My bed, growing up, was what I considered to be ‘my’ first piece of furniture and it was always special to me so I always thought I would find special beds for my children.” It was this search that resulted in the creation of the company.

LIttleFrench39

Josephine with one of her gorgeous Little French beds

“I have always wanted to run my own business and do it properly, so I have taken it slowly and indeed, finding the right beds takes time. Up until now, I have only shown my beds through Instagram, however, I have sold a few beds to people within my target market,” says Josephine, who is planning a European buying trip later this year. “My husband and I are going on an extended holiday with a view to sourcing more beds.”

LIttleFrench30

“Perfectly imperfect is the way that I would describe the patina that old, antique or vintage things acquire over time. It is the quality of the craftsmanship in each bed that I love. They are all made by hand, not by machine, so in that way are not perfect. While some have been repainted, they are not new and shiny, and they have the odd bump or scratch,” says Josephine, who takes a whimsical, romantic approach with the beds she lovingly restores. “I like to wonder about the history of every item and who has slept in them but, in saying that, I also love that they are more solid and the timber more beautiful than any new bed, with all its screws and bolts and pages of instructions.”

LIttleFrench03

Fabulous as props too, Little French offer a hire service also. “This is designed for stylists looking for something to add to a space to make it really special! I haven’t marketed this side of the business as yet and it’s something that would be considered on a case by case basis. Megan Morton, for example, borrowed one of my beds last year for a Belle magazine shoot. It didn’t end up being used but the exposure would have been fabulous for the business.”

Fruit salad alert! Meet Sack Me!’s new Paradiso collection

Fruity and fun, quirky kids bedding label Sack Me! is back with ‘Paradiso’ – a tropical inspired range of bedding (from cot to king size), accessories, novelty cushions and waterproof beanbags and cushions.

3“We wanted to do something a little different this year. We really wanted to capture that laid back feeling of being on holiday, kicking back by the pool, somewhere warm and lush, so we’ve added waterproof indoor/outdoor beanbags and cushions to the range, and we couldn’t be happier with the result,” says Sack Me! founder and designer Li-Ann Scott.

The brand’s signature novelty cushions feature heavily too with a pineapple, banana and apple mixed back with monkey and flamingo prints. “Our cushions are definitely one of our most popular products. Mums love them because they complete the look and kids love them because they ignite their imaginations, and that’s exactly what Sack Me! is all about,” says Li-Ann.

One of the collection’s most covetable items is the reversible doona cover – one side features a bright, tropical print while the other features something more restrained so you can tailor the look to your child’s mood.

2

“We wanted this collection to channel a tropical getaway, it’s bright, relaxed and playful, but flip it over and you’ve got something a little more subdued. One of my favourite pieces is the Flamingo doona cover which features quirky flamingos on one side, and classic gingham pattern on the reverse”, says Li-Ann.

5

With the entire Sack Me! range designed to mix and match, we love the label’s flexible and economical approach. “Everything is designed so you don’t have to start all over again when new collections are created, you simply refresh with a new pillowcase or sheet here or there and the look is instantly updated”, says Li-Ann.

The wall-hung shelving you never knew you needed. Until now!

After growing up with a dad who made her furniture and later living in New York, where the shopping is (let’s be honest) a lot better than in Australia, Rebecca Tyndall finally came to start her own wall-hung furniture business after having her first child.

IMG_0171

“The first item I designed was the Baby Bunting, which is still one of Willow and Wood’s most popular pieces. It’s a really beautiful piece of furniture for a nursery and there just wasn’t anything available to buy here in Australia that was similar. I spent nearly three years living in New York when I was younger and of course they have everything you could possibly want over there. I had serious shopping envy so I thought I would just make it myself.”

IMG_0273

That’s when she called on her dad, Russell, a builder, and now co-director of the business. He makes all the prototypes by hand in Sydney and most pieces are then manufactured overseas. “After I had designed a few pieces, everyone seemed to love them so much that in a moment of extreme confidence (because who would just start an online furniture company with no experience?) my Dad and I started Willow and Wood. Not that it happened overnight; in fact, it took about nine months to tweak the designs and get the company and website up and running. We launched with just six products.”

IMG_0310

The Bookworm Bookrack is the most popular product by far. “I designed it because we live in a small house but with heaps of wall space because the ceilings are so high. My boys just devour books and even with bookshelves everywhere we needed something more practical that would show off the artwork on the book covers. The artwork on kid’s books is so amazing and why wouldn’t you want to display them all the time? It attracts little ones to the books and because they are easy to access, more books are read. And you can never have too much storage.” Amen to that!

IMG_0180

IMG_0172

Rebecca says she is her own customer which is great because she knows her well! “Pretty much everything that we design has been in my house at one time or another. It’s because I design what I need and that’s what we sell. Women are the biggest deciders on decor in the home but they don’t just want things to look good. We want things that are also practical and that make our lives easier. And in my world, storage is king.”

IMG_0176

Rebecca and Russell recently decided to open a bricks and mortar store in Sydney’s Willoughby, so customers could see the products for themselves. And Rebecca believes what they offer is really unique.

“Most furniture stores have some items of shelving but we are unique in that most of what we sell is wall mounted. We do this to create more floor space in a home. We also like to decorate walls with our products. The Cloud Shelf and the Alps Shelf are cute pieces to decorate kid’s rooms with. You’re killing two birds with one shelf, so to speak.”

IMG_0188

They have just branched out into hallway storage with their Cloak Room Series, which is a take on the traditional American mud room and they’ll soon be adding the increasingly popular barn doors to their product line.

“Willow and Wood wouldn’t exist without my dad, Russell. Most weeks, he gets handed a design that has been scribbled on a scrap of paper by me and magically, it appears in the shop a few days later.”

Olli Ella’s whimsical collection featuring a macrame bassinet!

Being pregnant definitely inspired Olli Ella founder Chloe Brookman’s latest whimsical collection. She recently gave birth to little Nell, a baby girl as beautiful as her new wares!

OlliElla 160303-023

“The concept is about embracing a simple, easy living feel, with lots of natural elements,” Chloe says. “We were really inspired by designs of the late 1960s and early 1970s coming out of the south of France. We liked the idea of slowing down, being mindful, calm and present. We designed this collection with a nod to the slower pace of the 60s and 70s; an era where things were crafted rather than made. We love our homes and as crazy and chaotic as they can be, they are still our sanctuaries.”

OlliElla 160303-091

The stunning macramé bassinet, which been a long work in progress, is her favourite piece. “I have just loved using it with Nell. We’ve hung it in the living room, and she has spent nearly every afternoon nap there, doors open, sun streaming in, the sound of her brothers running around her. It’s beautiful and it’s made nap time an experience if that makes sense? I’m loving being a mama of three. It’s tiring and overwhelming at times for sure, but we are all so happy to have her. I had several late miscarriages before Nell, so there’s an overwhelming gratitude and perspective that I have had. I can’t take her for granted.”

OlliElla 160303-116
Chloe and baby Nell

OlliElla 160303-129

Expecting a girl led Chloe, who started the business with sister Olivia when she was pregnant with her first child, towards a softer, more serene aesthetic. During the nesting period, she also had a real urge to make things, turning to macrame when she probably should have been napping! “I didn’t fuss with a nursery as Nell sleeps in with us so this was perhaps in lieu of that!”

OlliElla 160303-078
Their popular belly baskets in new colours

Four new rugs are made from either 100% wool or jute. “The jute ones were inspired by 70s south of France. You might have found a rug similar to our Antibes rug in the courtyard of the home belonging to Bridgette Bardot! The jute rugs are intricate yet simple, and so soft! That’s not something one expects from jute generally but these are incredible. The Berber rug is a soft, delicate take on a traditional Beni Ourain rug and the Colombe and Paloma rugs are soft, luxurious and playful. We love them on walls and on floors.”

OlliElla 160303-184

I personally love the mix of brights with neutral, textural staples like the lovely changing basket.

little P, the new name in good looking and feeling kid’s rugs

Having four children of her own, Philippa Anderson always had an interest in creating something for kids. Already running Palmer Studio, a business specialising in bespoke rugs, it was on a trip to India to visit her mills that the idea for her ‘baby’ business, little P came about.

little p3

“Visiting India last year with my then eight-month-old in tow, I came up with the idea for little P,” explains Philippa. “Babies and kids need a soft place to play and there seemed to be very few options. Many kids rugs are machine-made or acrylic, don’t offer any cushioning, don’t use the best quality fibres and often have very tacky designs! I was keen to create something hardwearing but also soft and beautiful that could really enhance a kids’ play or bedroom space.”

little p 3

little p 1

Choosing 100% New Zealand wool, the softness and length of the fibres means the rugs are exceptionally durable, have a natural resistance to dirt and soiling and are soft underfoot. Providing a safe and comfortable environment for children to play on, they are also good for the environment, being 100% renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. Yet little P’s rugs don’t only do good they also look good! “I established this business most simply to create a beautiful collection of rugs for children’s interiors. While not bespoke, we produce a limited range of designs and produce on a small and manageable scale to avoid wastage. And because the little P rugs are handmade, the designs are all customisable so we can change colour or size to suit different spaces.”

little p

little p

Keen to keep little P on trend, Philippa will be adding some new designs and colours in 2016. “As we don’t mass produce and are not limited by order quantities, we can keep our range interesting with each collection somewhat ‘limited edition’. This means we will be adding some beautiful additions in the new year and that all of the designs in my head will eventually turn into a rug, which is exciting!”

little p2

Having launched mid this year, little P is already a proven success, recently adding Project Nursery in the USA as one of their stockists. A testament to the appeal of the collection and the value of design and quality going hand in hand for children’s products, little P gets even better thanks to Philippa’s philanthropic focus. “We are very proud of the fact that all of our products are made with very well established mills in traditional rug-making communities in Asia, all of which are certified with Care and Fair. This ensures protection against child labour being used, as well as the funds going back to these communities to help support health and educational initiatives.”

Rachel Castle’s reversible kids bedding

With her kids turning into teenagers, Rachel Castle couldn’t help but miss the once-daily ritual of tucking them into bed, reading to them and having a cuddle. So in an attempt to keep those memories alive she started designing kids bed linen. And seven years later she hasn’t stopped.

big-peach-heart-box-960

“It’s such a beautiful time for parents and I definitely miss it as mine get older. I guess this is what inspires me to keep making bed linen for the littles, I realise that time is so precious and it definitely doesn’t last.”

big-blue-heart-box2-960

big-blue-heart-box-960

Her latest bedding range of reversible quilts is made for kids stepping it up in the bed stakes, and what I mean by that is saying goodbye to the cot and hello to the grown up bed! “It’s an exciting time when the littles are big enough to sleep in a bed and parents are really keen to get the look right. Our new range of reversible quilts gives them big hearts for their first nights in a big bed, and then the option of a reverse pegboard spot for when they grow a little bigger and perhaps want a more grown up look. It’s really about the fun factor for kids too, being able to choose the hearts or the spots. As they get bigger they get so much more opinionated!”

big-peach-heart-box2-960

With one quilt featuring peach hearts and fluro pink spots, and the other, blue hearts and charcoal spots, they can easily be mixed and matched with Rachel’s expansive range. “We ensure that everything in our range works together — velvets, linens, stripes, bananas, alphabets, the more mixed the better we reckon. Our new Shop The Look section on our website clearly shows what we think works best for the various ranges we sell.”

FB_CastleOttoman_hero_1440

Not busy enough with a new bedding range, Rachel has also just released a collection of jumbo velvet floor cushions, which we absolutely love. If you’re not a fan of bean bags but love a big fluffy pouf for the floor, this is the one for you!

Block twins Alisa and Lysandra’s new kids’ wallpaper range

They were on The Block, twice. Then they started an interior design firm and an online shop. Then (gosh, I’m getting tired just listing it!) they designed a bedroom suite and an artwork range. And now, twins Alisa and Lysandra, in collaboration with Grafico, are launching a collection of children’s wallpaper.

Alisa and Lysandra wallpaper 3

Their new wallpaper collection evokes happiness and excitement through vivacious hues and patterns that are playful yet understated. Deviating from conventional children’s colour palettes, the collection introduces both soft and bold colours. It’s truly a case of: “Move over baby blue, and see you later baby pink!”

Alisa and Lysandra wallpaper 1

“Our new collection embraces fresh, contemporary hues and patterns that both children and parents will love,” explains Alisa. “We choose our design partners carefully based on the quality of their work and their ability to co- create with our vision. Grafico have been great to work with, helping us bring our design ideas to life.”

Set for release in January, the sisters and Grafico have pre-launched the range with a design that premiered on their renovation special Alisa and Lysandra to the Rescue last night. The design featured in the show is also making an appearance in Alisa’s new nursery. Her second child is due in January.

Launching their debut kids bedding collection 10 November, true to Arro Home’s distinctive style, it’s all about bold colours, creative prints and tactile fabrics. “It’s so much fun designing things for kids. You can tell a story with the product in a different way to an adult collection. You can go a little crazy with the colours and patterns and it allowed us to re-live some of our own childhood favourite things.”

arro home interiors addict 2

Entitled In the Sky, as the name suggest, the range is inspired by everything from up above. Deep dark space, vibrant colours of the solar system, sparkly constellations, fluffy clouds and a smiling sun and moon.

Kicking off with two prints, Cloud Nine and Astro, it is featured across doona covers, pillow cases, and cushions. To pair with the prints is Constellation — a simple grey and white sheet set — four new cushions and a knitted cotton blanket.

Soft and simple, it is sure to inspire kids at play and (hopefully) settle them into slumber!

Toucan’s art prints for little ones by sisters Renee & Natalie

Like many, when sisters Renee McGrath and Natalie Muscatello had children, they desperately wanted to find a job that was flexible around motherhood. Unlike many, that job actually turned into their dream career.

toucan cc

Launching children’s decor label Toucan in 2014, Natalie, who has a background in retail and design, and Renee, in preschool teaching, combined both their skills to create an online shop full of art prints, bedding, garlands and rugs.

toucan

With the aim to create beautiful, modern spaces where children (and their dreams) can grow, the art prints are designed and printed by the sisterly duo, with all other products being sourced ethically with quality and longevity in mind. “It’s important to us that our designs are contemporary and generate positive energy,” explains Renee. “We want to give kids the opportunity to visualise their true potential.”

toucann

Specialising in prints, for the sisters, art has always been the most important part of a room. “Art brings such a beautiful energy to an interior,” says Natalie. “It provides a talking point, helps to frame the space and injects it with colour and creativity.”

toucan b

With a large suite of art prints on offer, their capsule collection draws upon inspirational quotes, ensuring motivation is never more than a glance away. “Our timeless and charming art pieces will dress your walls with hope, inspiration, motivation and positive thoughts including: ‘Dream Big Little One,’ ‘From Little Things’ and ‘Good Vibes Only,’” explains Natalie. “For something a little sweeter (and without a quote), children will just love our favourite product, ‘Golide Ice-cream’ which is fun, colourful and makes us smile! Or alternatively, be wild and free with the ‘Flamingo Heart,’ ‘Water Coloured Deer,’ or ‘Love you more than I could Bear.'”

toucan 1

While they love their art, the sisters aren’t leaving the rest of the business behind. With Toucan on the upward trajectory, they have recently relocated to a larger space and have a whole range of new ideas in mind. “We’re about to have a creative explosion,” says Renee. “We have lots of fun, new designs in mind and are expanding our linen range to include a whole new suite of products for the nursery room.” Watch this space!

Leanne Abrahams finally follows her interiors calling after 3 kids

Motherhood is what led interior designer, Leanne Abrahams to embrace her undying passion for interiors and turn it into a career. A former copywriter with a media degree, Leanne sunk her teeth into her own renovation projects on the side, completely redesigning each of her three homes with gorgeous results.

Leanne and her kids
Leanne and her kids

“My builder suggested that I consider a career interior design, but I never thought about it seriously.” Leanne’s eye for detail and passion for interiors soon became evident, and she began giving renovation and colour advice to friends and family on their own projects. It wasn’t until she was pregnant with her third baby that the penny finally dropped. “I have never been as passionate about anything as I am about motherhood and raising my kids. I want to be present from the minute they wake up to the minute they go to bed. Having my three kids ignited an undeniable passion in me, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything without feeling that same passion. I liked writing but I wasn’t crazy mad about doing it every day. Whereas my own design projects gave me such immense joy that becoming an interior designer was all I could think about. And I knew I’d discovered my calling.”

One of Leanne's recent projects
One of Leanne’s recent projects

Heavily pregnant, Leanne started a Diploma of Interior Design online and continued to study and complete assessments well after her son was born. “I studied while Bailey slept and when the girls were at school. I handed in assessments at night after the kids went to sleep, and literally did my readings at any free minute I had, and there weren’t many!” After almost two years of juggling and studying, Leanne was qualified. “It was a feeling of a huge relief and mass excitement when I held my diploma in my hands. I had achieved my greatest dream and unleashed a passion that had been burning inside me since I was a young girl. It felt amazing!”

Earlier this year, she launched her business Lily Rose Interiors and it’s no surprise that her business is named after the middle names of her daughters, Sienna and Tyler. “They’re the reason I followed my dream. The passion I felt for them as a mother made me want to discover that passion in my career. I could never do anything I wasn’t in love with. It just wasn’t possible anymore.”

Sienna room 1 web

Lily Rose Interiors specialises in children’s interiors and is based on Sydney’s North Shore. Leanne focuses entirely on her little clients’ interests, personality and favourite things to bring to life gorgeous, vibrant, beautiful and functional spaces that ooze style. “My little Sienna is such a playful, fun, energetic little girl with an adoration for the colour green. This led me to create a vibrant space that completely reflected her personality and that she would absolutely love. My daughter Tyler on the other hand, is a very girly, sweet, soft princess and her room is just that.”

Daughter Tyler's room
Daughter Tyler’s room

Leanne believes that a child’s room should be more than just a place to rest. It should be a space that sparks imaginative play, harnesses creativity and encourages little minds to explore. And it should change as your kids go from baby, to a toddler, to child, to a teenager. “I’ve recently changed my son’s nursery into a toddler room. It has shelves to display his trains with tracks that clip on to transform it into an instant play space. I just love coming up with creative ideas that tap into a child’s interest.”

But the buck definitely does not stop at children’s interiors. Leanne extends her love for interior design into every room in the house, and has just completed a project redesigning a modern apartment in the Gazebo in Sydney. “I just love creating spaces that are unique and meaningful. It gives me great pleasure to take a project from concept to set-up, and see the amazing results come to life. And I especially see my lovely clients’ smiling faces. It’s an absolute joy.”

Now that the passion for Leanne’s interior design career has been fully ignited, it is apparent that this creative road was always going to find her, it just took her three kids to show her the way.

It is for that reason, she favours her living/dining area, which was recently extended into the garage to accommodate a play area. “We spend so much time in there. We recently extended our living space into our garage (which we never used for our cars) and converted it into a playroom for our kids. This joins the living/dining room and playroom all together — definitely my favourite area of our home.”

However, it wouldn’t be a real reno if there weren’t challenges! And for the living/dining area, that appeared in the form of structural walls. “The biggest hurdle we faced was needing to consider structural walls. This is when the exposed beam idea took place to create a feature piece where structure was needed.”

Now with a layout that’s open and airy, Kate, like many of us, wanted her home to be functional for family events and open plan for modern-day living. However, for those that can’t afford (the money or the time) to make those big structural changes, Kate still has some tips for giving your home that new and fresh feel: “Decide on a theme or a style you are trying to create. Once you have settled on something you like, you should prioritise the big items you want to change first. If you are on a budget it may take some time for all the items to be purchased and the room to come together, so just keep that in mind.”

Before you ask, much of the furniture shown is available from BoConcept, including Kate’s favourite piece, the entertainment unit.

The Tree of Gratitude: What are you grateful for today?

Like many parents, Ephie Bokas couldn’t help but notice the blatant lack of gratitude in her house. Growing increasingly frustrated by the conversations centred on “What more?” or “What else?” and the petty arguments over TV shows and the size of dessert portions (with no acknowledgement of the fact that there was a television or a dessert to begin with!), Ephie decided to do something about it.

Researching the science of gratitude, she implemented a gratitude practice in her own home. Starting as a rather dubious craft project it eventuated as the Tree of Gratitude: part artwork, part project and part mechanism for well-being. “The tree itself is based on an original artwork illustrated by Melbourne artist Ingrid Wilson and has been transposed onto adhesive fabric that can be easily applied to any smooth wall. It comes with pencils, sticky leaves and a booklet containing 300 prompts to encourage and facilitate a daily gratitude practice.”

The first product under her label Wallitude, the Tree of Gratitude helps its user complete a 21-day gratitude practice. “There is some evidence to suggest that it takes 21 days to form a habit and having researched extensively the many benefits of gratitude, I think it’s a habit worth cultivating. The idea is that on opening your Tree of Gratitude kit, each participant receives their own bale of 25 leaves (we’ve allowed a few extra leaves in each) and each day, for 21 days, you write or draw three things that you were grateful for that day. At the conclusion of the 21 days, you may just develop a habit of looking for the good in each day and will enjoy the many health benefits that come from doing so.”

Perfect for children and adults alike (it’s been used in homes, schools and workplaces) Ephie’s family have already proved its success. “I admit that at first my sons resisted the idea, but by day three my six year-old was reminding me to complete it and by day seven I overheard him tell my three year-old to ‘Just be grateful,’ and he meant it! Within weeks I noticed a fundamental shift in attitudes, in their levels of awareness and in their willingness to convey their own gratitude often without any prompting. It was an extraordinary thing to experience!”

Easy, fun, functional and beautiful, the Tree of Gratitude retails for $89. Shop online.
