Hipster wildlife art for kids’ rooms from Bon Maxie

Whilst on maternity leave Clare Spelta found herself feeling a little lost. Wanting to achieve something other than “being a milk machine and the world’s fastest nappy changer” she began painting, and from there, Bon Maxie was born.

IMG_6123

An online store for original watercolour art prints, custom artwork and bamboo wall art for both kids and adults, Clare aims to provide people with a happy medium of original (not mass-produced) and easy-on-the-eye (not “I don’t get it?”) artwork.

“People are putting a lot of thought into creating beautiful, themed spaces and love buying directly from local creators,” explains Clare. “But there’s a lot that’s unaffordable and unattainable for the general public so they don’t want to invest or know where to begin. So I started designing artwork to cater to this.”

IMG_6223

Hugely affordable, Clare’s pieces start from just $10. Versatile and original, they are the perfect budget way to make over your walls, with Clare’s favourite product, her bamboo wall art, proving particularly effective. “I really love the bamboo hangers. There are so many amazing wall art products out there but original paintings printed on lightweight bamboo are pretty unique. Their neutral colour helps them fit in with any colour scheme as well and I love that adults are wanting these for their own spaces too — just because they are animals doesn’t mean they have to be for kids!”

IMG_6138

Also worthy of note are her custom artworks: “For portraits, people send me pictures of their children in their favourite outfits or holding special toys and I recreate them in a stylised form. I especially love these as you can really get a sense of each child’s unique character! It seems custom portraits are really on the rise, especially in the lead up to Christmas, so a big chunk of my time is focused on them.”

Continuously painting and brainstorming ideas, Claire is looking to extend her range of products to other handmade items. So, watch this space!

Buying and styling photographic art prints just got easier

Working as a magazine stylist, Emma O’Meara was always on the hunt for the next big thing. Finding the photography of Jason Furnari through a friend, she soon began using his fine art prints for editorial shoots, and then, came the idea for a collaboration.

OPC-Outdoor39_2048x2048
Emma and Jason

“We both have a shared love of photography and interiors,” explains Emma. “So we immediately bonded over the idea of creating a beautiful selection of prints to sell.” So, rather than just talk about it, they did just that!

ThePrintCollection3394ret01_1024x1024-1

Starting online photography store, Our Print Collection, just last month, the duo offer a range of both framed and unframed fine art prints. With Emma curating the collection and Jason the lead photographer, their body of work is unique, contemporary and beautifully presented, ready to be hung on the wall.

ThePrintCollection3353_1024x1024

A cohesive range of 32 images, many of the photographs are from Jason’s personal collection, a body of work he’s been creating for some 20 years! “I have worked as an editorial and commercial photographer for decades and have been lucky to travel extensively throughout my career. On my days off while on jobs I always took time to shoot for my personal collection, so I’m excited to finally share this work.”

OPC-Outdoor20_2048x2048

With images of water and the coastline prevalent, as well as a handful of aspirational travel images, all the photographs share that same sense of emotion. “It was important to us that we curated a set of evocative images that we could picture on our own walls,” says Jason. “The images resonate with us, they evoke a feeling, reflect a moment in time or visually they may just be an interesting place to be.”

Traditional-03

However, beautiful images aside, Our Print Collection stands out from the crowd for another reason, with Emma’s background giving the business a unique edge. “Working as an interior stylist gives me good insight into what is on trend with both art and things like frame styles. I like creating images for our website that show how our collection might look in your home and I think this helps the buyer to picture how our prints can work in different settings.”

OurPrintCollection-8976_1024x1024

Offering three products: unframed prints, shadow line framed prints and traditionally framed prints, they came in two sizes and three finishes. All the art is printed, framed, packaged and delivered from Barwon Heads, Victoria and shipped Australia wide.

Sprout and Sparrow: colourful, bold and affordable kids prints

Spending hours scouring shops and the internet to find the perfect piece of art for their little ones, sisters Adi Stevens and Tash Jerrard-Bishop struggled to find something affordable but also a little bit different. So in a brief moment of calm during a play date, they came up with an idea: it was time to make their own!

image1
Starting Sprout and Sparrow in 2014, they design bold, colourful and contemporary children’s wall art, greeting cards and gift tags. Their latest range, in particular, is a result of their love of colour and also the very people who inspired the business, their children. “Our latest prints are inspired by our own children,” explains Adi. “The Paper Plane for example, was inspired by one of our kids who is currently obsessed with paper planes and, if you look closely, you will see his words on the page. Similarly, our The Universe print was inspired by our children’s words.”

With the latest range including illustrative and typographical prints, they have also for the first time expanded their range of children’s decor to include free-standing, scandi style ply wood block prints. We love!

Passionate about creating artworks that bring life into children’s spaces, “We have always been about bold colours even in the midst of the monochrome trend!” all their prints are designed and printed in Melbourne. Printed on high quality paper, each print is hand embossed with the Sprout and Sparrow symbol.

Louise de Weger: from struggling single mother to in-demand artist in just 8 months

Last year, struggling to pay her son’s school tuition, single mother Louise de Weger decided to take a leap of faith. Quitting her job in hospitality and purchasing some paint with the little money she had left, she embarked on a journey that would be stressful and exhausting, but extremely rewarding.

Louise_bio_1a

“Nothing comes without hard work and this year has been tiring to say the least, but now I am about to take a well-earned holiday. I have featured on Reno Rumble, my business is thriving with ever-increasing collections around the world, I’ve been invited to display at the 2016 Architectural Digest Home Design Show in NYC, all in eight months. I’m so proud of myself, and I’m not ashamed to say that.”

Photo credit: Martina Gemmola for Adore Home Magazine
Photo credit: Martina Gemmola for Adore Home Magazine

Having always had a love of art, Louise studied visual arts and contemporary craft at Southbank Institute of Technology, in which time she was both the winner and runner-up of The St George Bank Contemporary Art Competition. “I was the winner and runner-up with the judges not realising that both works were by the same artist as they were vastly different. I love experimenting with different styles, so it was quite a pivotal moment of realising that one day this could actually be more than just something to occupy my time.”

photo 1

[contextly_sidebar id=”DrLBsZ4Rh8yNTfluQIOnCuv6RMPWxRiX”]Now creating modern abstract artworks — with a touch of retro and art deco — Louise’s works are very structured, with geometric forms and lush pops of colour. Made using acrylics and inks, her art making process is completely intuitive and as she confesses, quite frantic. “There are never any sketches or design processes involved. It’s a great reflection on how I tend to live my life also. I just go into it headstrong, without over analysing and without fear. I have a background colour in mind to set the overall tone and mood of the work but apart from that it’s a very organic, natural process.”

Now a full-time artist, with commissions booked up until the end of the year, Louise is constantly creating. However, out of the many artworks she’s made there’s still one that stands out: her commission for Reno Rumble. Which standing at 1.8×1.2 metres was remarkably painted in just two days! “That experience physically shattered me. I did not sleep for two whole days and I was shaking with hot flushes and sweats, but nonetheless it was completed in time with an hour to spare before it was flown direct to Melbourne from my home in Brisbane.”

Carly & Leighton's dining room on Reno Rumble
Carly & Leighton’s dining room on Reno Rumble

Concerned the tight timeframe would see her painting not be up to her usual standard, it turned out Louise had nothing to worry about, with the experience becoming her proudest career moment. “When the episode came time to air, myself and my family were all anxiously waiting to see how it was received. There wasn’t much feedback and it was all a bit of an anti-climax, but then they cut to the judges’ comments where they labeled my artwork ‘the hero’ of the room. We all screamed, it was just a huge relief! It was a proud, proud moment. It’s also the gift that keeps on giving, everyday a new amazing opportunity arises from it and I never stop getting excited over it. ”

Beautiful illustrations for the Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit collaboration

A collection of daily drawings of all sorts of must haves, The Envy Edit is the brainchild of Sydney creative, Angelique Sloss.

Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit

[contextly_sidebar id=”3iN6EFUD8HiVSBBdTLtfpZJ1abtm0jI1″]With a background in the fashion industry, Angelique had always had a strong affinity for drawing, however she had never seen it as something more than a hobby, until now. “Designing, illustrating and trend forecasting have always been apart of my 5-9. I love to keep busy and make sure my creative juices keep flowing. So with my latest venture I wanted to do something different. I wanted to combine my love of drawing and my Instagram addiction.” And so, The Envy Edit was born!

Illustrating items that reflect what is currently trending, as well as some of her all-time favourite pieces, Angelique draws anything and everything from homewares to fashion to food. And as a special treat, she has created three Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit illustrations. We absolutely love them!

Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit

Showcasing all her artworks on her Instagram feed, @theenvyedit, she also sells a selection of them as prints and greeting cards via her online boutique. Creating the illustrations with either markers, watercolours or pencils, no illustration has the same design process. “Each project is different. I usually start by analysing the purpose of the artwork then go from there. Majority of the time I use images saved in my phone as reference for what I am drawing. Having that by my side, I begin sketching up the image with pencil. I then choose what materials are best for the artwork.”

Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit

No longer strictly working in fashion, when Angelique’s not busy drawing she’s freelancing for a variety of brands. “Being in the creative world I juggle a few different roles. I am a freelancer for a few brands — working on their marketing and design projects — and I also lecture at one of the design colleges in Sydney: Karl Von Busse Institute of Design.”

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 2.59.46 pm

Together, their designs form Seventh Lane Textiles & Homewares, a business Ashlee has always dreamed of owning.“Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved decorating. While both my sisters were playing with their Barbies, I was redecorating the doll house! Fast forward 20 years and not much has changed, except now I’m designing original and inspiring homewares to use in real life homes!”

Designing pieces that can easily be mixed and matched, they try to stay away from the transient current trends. “Creating that peaceful, happy, vibrant and eclectic home you crave is less about following this season’s trends or studying those all-important style rules. Covet my Coffee Table: Nathan and Jaynie Johnson of Blacklist

Photos by Jacqui Turk

Welcome to the home of the talented, lovely and photogenic Nathan and Jaynie Johnson who own Blacklist, one of our favourite places to buy affordable Aussie art. 2014 was a great and busy year for them, including renovations and the birth of their gorgeous son Dare (pictured), their second child.

blacklist_jacquiturk-11

“We have lots of books on our ottoman that we like to use as inspiration and to relax. We have Lero Grannis, an encyclopaedia on palms and lots of books on fashion around,” Jaynie says. “We get most of our books online from The Book Depository. We also have a Mad Et Len candle which we bought from Island Luxe in Bangalow (one of my all time favourite stores).”

blacklist_jacquiturk-6

blacklist_jacquiturk-5

The pair bought their child-friendly ottoman from Charbella in Cronulla. “It’s handmade in Africa and we love it as it’s the perfect height and is easy for the kids. We didn’t want anything that they could knock as coffee tables always seem to be the perfect height for kids to hit their heads on. We also love that we can move it out of the way super easy and it doubles as a seat and foot rest when we need it to,” Jaynie adds.

The couple don’t always have a coffee table/ottoman so they needed a flexible and easily moved piece of furniture. “Sometimes we love to have it out with some of our treasures on display, and other times we just like to have the space in front of the lounge to play. It’s definitely part practical/part décor.

Nathan, Jaynie and baby Dare, at home in Cronulla
Jaynie, Nathan and baby Dare, at home in Cronulla

“We tend to not put glass on it, but we do like to leave items on it as we encourage our kids to not touch things that they shouldn’t. Dare is too young at the moment to try to grab things but Willow has always been brought up with the encouragement to not touch certain things and she has been very self controlled with it. We obviously ensure anything potentially dangerous is out of reach, such as antlers!”

Nathan and Jaynie have just finished renovating their kitchen and loved hosting family in it for Christmas. “We haven’t had an oven for four years,” Jaynie reveals. “We took ages to decide on what we wanted to do with the space but finally enlisted the help of our architect friend and the amazing ITF cabinetmakers and we have come up with a more than we could have hoped or dreamed for kitchen. We are about to start designing our bathrooms and then we will be almost finished with the house which is very exciting for us. It’s been a sloooooow process.”

blacklist_jacquiturk-1

The Johnsons’ home has a colour palette of black, white and timber and they love bringing in different textures. “Essentially, our interior style at home now is sophisticated seaside grunge!”

Jaynie’s favourite places to buy homewares include eBay, Les Interieurs, Water Tiger, Major Minor for linen and Retro Wombat in Thirroul.

Excitingly, Blacklist are about to launch The Black Factory. “We are currently turning an industrial warehouse into a hub for creatives with a photographic area, meeting rooms, desk spaces in an awesome mezzanine and warehousing, so we will be taking applications for tenants from early-to-mid January,” Jaynie says.

They’re also launching their first greetings card collection and journals in February at Life InStyle Sydney. Not to mention a new art print collection, Not All Who Wander are Lost. “We are eagerly awaiting the new year as it brings with it so many new opportunities and we can’t wait!”
