The winner of 7 Vignettes July 2014

I am never (I repeat never) judging 7 Vignettes again. It is too hard and I get too emotionally involved! I want everyone to win. Well, not everyone, but several very worthy participants! Trying to pick a winner this week has been making me so anxious and it’s time to rip off the bandaid. The winner is…

Angela Steyn (@angelasteynandco). Some might find it easy to look past the subtlety of Angela’s pics, but it’s their softness and simplicity which appeals to me, month after month, but especially this month.

Angela's entry for Canada

Canada was not an easy theme but I loved Angela’s entry (above).

This is a woman who knows how to make things — any things — look good. Great, in fact. There’s often some lovely personal stories behind her images too. Like her Grandma’s lipstick (top) and this entry for the ‘home’ theme.

For me, these pictures are the perfect compromise between styled and real. Effortlessly. Or so it appears!

Angela's entry for coffee
Angela’s entry for coffee

There’s no runner-up prize this month, but I have to give notable mentions to…

@madebyciel

@kerrieanne4artonparkdesigns

@_fridays_child_

@adiandbert

… because you ladies made it so hard to pick! There were more I loved, but I have to stop somewhere right?!

Go follow these creative types if you know what’s good for you!

I really loved judging, hard as it was when it came to the choosing part. It was even more special because it was my birthday week and I self indulgently made the themes all about the things I love, like lipstick, coffee and bathtime. Why not, eh?! It was so fun looking through the feed and I felt like you were all celebrating with me. Talk about feel good factor!

On the subject of the warm and fuzzies, I must say again just how heartwarming it is, when looking through the pictures, to see all your supportive, encouraging, kind (and sometimes downright funny) comments on each other’s efforts. This lovely, positive community, doesn’t get old and it doesn’t lose its sparkle; if anything, it gets better with age! I am so grateful that this little monthly Instagram challenge still brings so much joy. Thank you to Shani (aka @rarepearstudio) for blogging about it this month. If you blog about your 7 Vignettes experience, please send me the link so I don’t miss it!

I would say that it is really helpful when everyone puts their week’s efforts together in collage format when it comes to judging. I looked at everyone’s entries, whether they did or not, but I’d suggest you all do to give yourself the best chance of standing out to the guest judges.

Until next month (when we are likely to hit 40k images on the hashtag!),

Jen

How would you spend $50,000 if you could renew a special memory?

Sponsored by Nuffnang

It’s a big question and a lot of cash! You have every chance to win it though, thanks to NRMA Insurance. More on that later. It got me thinking how I’d spend all that money to relive a memory or start a new one. When I think of cherished memories I think first of the most recent, our wedding, six months ago, which certainly rates as the most magical day of my life. Then my thoughts quickly turn to family, home and Christmas and all the nostalgia, history and happy memories around that.

iag image

Having grown up in the UK and spent the first 26 of my life there before moving to Australia six years ago, Christmas for me is cold, sometimes white, involves sitting in front of an open fire (there’s even chestnuts sometimes) being with my family, eating ourselves into food comas. There’s also church, midnight mass, reunions with my oldest and dearest friends from school and so on.

The only time I get homesick in Australia is at Christmas time. We don’t talk about the time when I started weeping during carols by candlelight at Sydney’s Balmoral beach (my now husband and I were quite a new couple and I think he was a little concerned about my mental state). These days I spend Christmas with my in-laws who are delightful, but it isn’t the same. They go big on Christmas Eve, whereas my family is all about Christmas Day. They eat salmon, whereas nothing less than roast turkey with all the trimmings (and then some) is really Christmas lunch for me. Last year I served warm mulled wine to their very bemused guests (all the more for me when some found it a little too much for a summer’s day).

Anyway, I’d use the $50,000 to fly home to the UK with my husband, business class to make it all a bit easier, and then get professional chefs to cater a massive Christmas lunch for us all at my dad’s place. There’d be champagne, of course, and mulled wine. And plenty of spare change left over for generous gifts!

I’d love to know what your most special memories are, or what memory you’d love to ‘renew’ if you could. Please share in the comments below.

If you’d like to enter NRMA Insurance’s super simple competition for a real chance to win $50,000 (to renew a memory or start a new one), visit their site and enter your insurance renewal details in their Renewal Reminder system, whether you’re a customer or not. When your policy is up for renewal, you’ll be contacted.

Good luck!

Reece invites designers and students to reinvent the vanity

The Reece Bathroom Innovation Award (BIA) is back and this year they’re turning the spotlight on bathroom furniture and offering new and improved prizes.

Open to budding and established Australian designers alike, applicants will have to wow the judges by showing them how they would reinvent the vanity unit to enhance the bathroom space.

“The BIA has always been about pushing the boundaries of bathroom product design,” explains marketing manager Belinda Geels. “So this year we’re looking to student and professional designers to really explore the possibilities of bathroom furniture. We want to see how Australia’s emerging design talent can reinvent and truly redefine the vanity unit.”

Along with an updated brief, the BIA has also revamped its prizes, with the 2014 BIA professional category winner taking home $10,000 in cash and having their entry prototyped by Australia’s leading vanity unit manufacturer, Omvivo.

The student winner also gets a money-can’t-buy experience, collecting $5,000 in cash and heading to Barcelona for a two-week internship with the world’s largest bathroom manufacturer, Roca.

Now in its ninth year, the BIA encourages and celebrates innovative bathroom design and provides a platform for entrants to share their talent with the international design industry. The competition opened to both professional and student designers on 1 March. For more information and to see last year’s winners visit the BIA website here.

2014 Dulux Colour Awards finalists announced

After reviewing close to 200 entries from some of the top names in the Australasian design community, the judges of the 2014 Dulux Colour Awards have narrowed the list down to 76 finalists.

Murphy's HOuse
Murphy’s House by Alex Fulton Design

Now in its 28th year, the Dulux Colour Awards recognise the imaginative use of colour by architects and interior designers, to redefine the spaces they have created.

Standouts this year include Murphy’s House by Alex Fulton Design, a renovated 1903 villa, whose colour palette of a vibrant, bold and at times kooky theme, reflects the creativity of the owners.

Little Red Riding Hood by Nexus Designs is also a frontrunner, with the bold use of colour on the built-in joinery allowing for a simplistic look that feels complete without layers of accessories.

Both finalists are in the Single Residential Interior category, one of the nine categories. A winner will be announced for each, with the best of the category winners going on to be awarded the Grand Prix prize.

Dulux’s Andrea Lucena-Orr, said 2014 was another inspirational year, with submissions reflecting key commercial and residential trends: “The use of block colour was prominent in the [residential] categories. For the Single Residential Interior category, red, green and grey were popular colours.”

Win dinner for 2 to celebrate the new look Victoria Room

The Victoria Room has a new look and it’s not surprising it’s a stunning one, thanks to the work of interior designer Blainey North.

victoria rooms

After 10 successful years of trading, the new owners decided it was time for a change. Blainey has given the venue a beautiful new look featuring lots of dark navy (my favourite!) and deep, masculine shades, whilst moving away from the previous British Raj style.

Chef Samuel Cheetham, previously of Chez Bruce in London and Becasse & Quarter Twenty One in Sydney, is now heading up the kitchen. His new menu includes delicious sounding dishes like freshly shucked oysters with Campari granita, salt baked potatoes with smoked sour cream, shallots & preserved lemon, marinated Mahi Mahi and scallop, lime, black pepper and avocado (pictured).

WIN

To celebrate the new look, one lucky reader will win a three-course dinner for two with a glass of wine each at the Victoria Room. To enter, complete this form by 11pm on Wednesday 5 March 2014.

Win a his ‘n hers doona for Valentine’s Day

Whether you’re set for a hot and steamy or cool and cuddly Valentine’s Day, Tontine’s Venus&Mars doona has got your sleeping arrangements covered! It offers different fill levels in each half of the doona, to create an innovative dual warmth system.

Frustrated Man Sleeping Without Covers

There’s no denying the needs of women and men can seem worlds apart, especially when it comes to the bedroom. It’s common for couples (whether they’re male and female, male and male or indeed female and female!) to prefer different warmth levels from their quilt. One partner will be a warmer sleeper and the other a cooler sleeper. One might kick off the quilt in the night, while the other hugs it tight!

Making my bedroom a sanctuary and why you should too

I’m a really busy girl, as you can probably guess if you follow my antics on this blog. But I also preach the importance of taking time out (and sometimes you have to really work at making this happen) to relax, switch off from technology and just breathe.

jen bishop adairs perfect escape 2
My bed

My absolute favourite place to do this is the bath, but I don’t trust myself with my prized interiors coffee table books in there. Steam, clumsiness, you know… So when I need a little time out I like to retreat to my bedroom with a nice cup of tea, a stack of books and homes mags and lose myself in them for an hour or so. It makes such a difference!
