“What I like most about designing for kids is that there are no rules,” explains Inga Rodd, founder of new bedding brand, Goosebumps. “Kids love fun and colour and that is what Goosebumps is all about!”

Looking at her debut range, It’s A Jungle Out There, it’s clear to see that fun and colour are at the forefront of Inga’s designs. Vibrant, bold and packing a punch, all products are unisex, reversible and sold as separates, an important decision that allows for the kids to become the designers. “I wanted to create a fun bedroom experience for kids where they could mix and match any pieces to create their own style, individuality and personality,” says Inga. “It’s about breaking all the rules and mixing and switching it up to create a wild and wonderful experience for your little monkeys.”

Having kids herself, Inga has spent the last three years staying at home looking after her twin boys. Yet with a background in retail, wholesale and fashion and a keen eye for design and colour, her mind soon began ticking, with the idea of Goosebumps reaching fruition earlier this year.

Now with her Spring/Summer debut range receiving such great reviews, Inga has gone straight back to creating, having just completed designing her next collection, which excitingly will also include an adults range. “Hopefully the big people will now get a chance to play with colour in their bedrooms,” explains Inga. “We’ve had such a great response from all our customers that it felt like a natural progression to move into adults bedding.”

With a release date set for early next year, the future looks bright for Goosebumps and I can’t wait to get a first glimpse of the adults range. Watch this space!

I just love bedding. Yet I must admit I always find myself envying the kids’ collections, and the debut from Sack Me! is no exception.

Designed by former architect turned graphic designer Li-Ann Scott, the debut range, Haute Bites, features a food theme to bring about that friendly familiarity to kids and kids-at-heart. “Taking a cue from my family’s live to eat motto, our debut range features a quirky take on a gastro-art theme,” says Li-Ann. “The designs just evolved organically from our day-to-day adventures, seeing the world through my children’s eyes, as well as conveying a positive message in a fun way which children can relate to.”

The idea for Sack Me! came about when Li-Ann was on the hunt for kids’ bed linen which was gender neutral and stylish, but spoke the language children speak. Struggling to find something that fit that brief, she took on the challenge herself, creating a collection that includes fitted sheets for cots, single and king single beds, reversible quilt covers in single and double sizes, pillowcases and cushions to match.

The entire range is Oeko-Tex certified, made from 300 thread-count, 100% cotton sateen and free from harmful substances. With prices starting from $35 for cushions and $49 for fitted cot sheets, this bedding won’t break the budget!

The second collection of bed linen, cushions and prints from Feliz is simply gorgeous. Filled with pastels, watercolour and embroidery, the whole range is the embodiment of organic and luxurious freshness. And looking at the beautifully styled photos below, I’m very envious of anyone who gets to calls that their bed!

Created via a mix of both screen printing and embroidery, everything is produced locally, something that is very important to owners Jane Forbes and Melissa Alessi. “What we do feels light years from mass production,” says Jane. “But it is the handmade aspect that we love and want to preserve.”

With this notion in mind, the duo decided to also create a kids range, which saw them use timeless images like bikes and SLR cameras, believing these objects need to be preserved. “We live in a digital world but bikes and cameras weren’t meant to be nostalgic,” explains Jane. “They’re fun, synonymous with youth. Bikes never lose their cool and we hope kids will always be able to identify cameras, skipping ropes, hoola hoops and vinyl records.”

The adult range is also seeing Feliz go off in a new direction, with this second collection seeing the addition of both an embroidery and watercolour design. The end result is soft and striking, with an understated simplicity and versatility, that between you and me, I desperately want to get my hands on!

Kip & Co’s sun-kissed Australian summer collection

With Kip & Co today launching their fifth collection, One Fine Day, it is safe to say they’ve firmly cemented themselves as one of my favourite (if not my ABSOLUTE favourite) bedding brand!

In celebration of the sun-kissed Australian summer, their Spring Summer ’14 collection features an expanded offering of bedding, towels, blankets, bathrobes, beanbags and home furnishings. Showcasing their signature graphic designs, with outback tones against colourful splashes, shimmers of gold and feminine fabric; One Fine Day is all about fun, playfulness and appreciating the gorgeous Aussie coastline.

This season, Kip & Co have collaborated with the team at Melbourne-based fashion label Mister Zimi, a natural fit for the pair, with both being known for their vivacious prints and easy-going aesthetic. After a hugely successful initial collection earlier this year, Cotton On KIDS are back with a second linen and bedroom range. It’s wonderful and just quietly, I’m a little excited that the linen goes up to queen size!

Due to hit stores and online in late September, one half of the design duo behind Cotton On KIDS, Sarah Lawrence, says customers can expect to see a range of fresh new styles including soft pastels, polkadots and tassels for girls and bright block colours, bold zigzags and stripes for boys.

“The new collection houses a fabulous range of bed linen including colourful sprinkle sheets and loads of fun new cushions that will look equally as fabulous with the first range as they do with other styles in this new drop,” explains Sarah. “We have also focused more on bedroom decor in this collection with geometric-print lanterns, tulle-covered fairy lights, statement garlands and brightly coloured wall stickers in all shapes and sizes.”

Designed to be mixed and matched, the range aims to inspire kids and parents to re-create their bedrooms and turn them into a sanctuary where they can sleep, dream, play and have fun. The 100 percent cotton linen range is available in a variety of designs suitable for single, double and queen size beds, ensuring everyone in the house including toddlers, teens, and even the big kids (me!) can have fun revamping their bedrooms with fun, bright and on-trend styles.

Prices start at $6.95 for a wall sticker pack through to $69.95 for a queen doona cover, making it an affordable option for growing families.

The new Bedroom Society range from I Love Linen

I Love Linen owner Lauren Roe impressed us with her fun mix ‘n match pillowcase range earlier this year. Now she’s released a full linen range under her own label, The Bedroom Society.

“Although the pillowcases were really bold and bright, my overall design philosophy is about playful restraint; it’s about embracing simple design concepts but having lots of fun with little pops of pattern colour,” Lauren says.

“I focused on creating a range of classic French flax linen bedding that is simple and elegant in its design. I then balanced this out with fun and fresh cushions and screen printed pillowcases that add a pop of colour and make it very easy to instantly change how each linen piece looks, depending on what you style it with.

“I love all my bright cushions and pillowcases but I always like to set them against good classic bedding and pure linen is dreamy.”

The prices are pretty great: pillowcases and cushion covers from $24.95 each and queen linen quilt cover sets with pillowcases for $230.

Pre-order fun bedding from The Club of Odd Volumes

Textile printing company The Club of Odd Volumes are hoping to crowdfund enough money to break into the bedding industry. And if their samples are anything to go by, this is definitely a Kickstarter campaign you’ll want to get behind.

Their bedding is digitally printed and certainly not subtle. No polka dots and stripes here, but life-sized cats (I don’t want them, I need them!), a herd of whales, the ocean and more. Right now, they’re only working on sheet sets (but they do hope to expand into duvet covers at a later date), which will be 100% cotton and 300-thread count.

Collaborating with artists Furry Little Peach and Yoko Honda, The Club of Odd Volumes are hoping to raise $35,000 to get their project off the ground. Everyone who backs the campaign will receive a reward, with $70 getting you a set of two pillowcases and $265 getting you a king bed set. The campaign ends in 10 days.

Specialising in natural fabrics and timeless designs – think seersuckers, ginghams, linens and cashmere — these bedroom goodies can be mixed and matched to create beautiful bedroom sanctuaries.

Coming in muted tones of pinks, blues, taupes and greys, co-founders Edwina Wills and Gendy Parry-Okeden decided to start creating kids bedding after struggling to find products that matched their personal aesthetic.

“The only things available had bold and brassy colours or were covered in busy motifs – neither of which suited our styles,” explains Gendy. “ So we created our own.”

Determined to meet the demand of the Australian consumer, who may otherwise look overseas for cheaper premium products, the duo set out to design durable and affordable bed linen and accessories.

“We want to provide beautiful products without the high pricing or the overseas shipping fees,” says Edwina. “Good quality, stylish basics at affordable prices. We think there is a real gap in the market.”

With a junior and baby range, bedding comes in cot, single, king single and double size with the pyjamas fitting newborns to ten-year olds and for now, there’s even a limited edition size for mum!

As Kip & Co co-owner Kate Heppell puts it: “We’re not trying to be the sophisticated kids bedding company, or even the cute or the pretty, we just want to make a spunky fun kids bedding range.” And boy, do they nail that brief.

Kate, along with her sister Hayley Pannekoecke and her best friend Alex van der Sluys, make up the Kip & Co team. Founded in 2012 they also design bold and beautiful adults bedding, but it’s their new kids range, that we got an exclusive first look at, that has really got our attention.

A particular favourite is the scribble print, “the kids version of the polka dot,” which was drawn by Hayley’s then four-year-old daughter, Chloe.

“We had kind of tried a scribble print before but we had never thought to say to a child can you have a little play for us,” explains Kate. “So Chloe did all these scribbles for us and we just ended up doing this big repeat of them. We didn’t want it to be age specific, just fun and colourful.”

It is this type of collaboration that sees Kate favour designing for kids over adults, and having a child herself and Hayley having three, means there’s always a little person to bounce ideas off.

“We definitely do a lot of testing with our kids,” says Kate. “Showing them drawings and prints throughout the design process. Chloe in particular is definitely our inspiration, she is a great sounding board.”

Other kids prints featured in the range include a reversible bedspread with a pizza print on one side and a psychedelic candystripe on the other, as well some deep coloured velvets with cotton backings.

And if you’re wishing you could turn back the clock so you too could enjoy the lovely bedding, no need, the kids prints are also available for adults!

Another week, another gorgeous collection of Australia linen, this time from the sisters at Hunting for George in Melbourne.
