Dinosaur Designs’ sculptural Flower collection

Sculptural and beautiful, the upcoming solo collection by Louise Olsen, creative director of Dinosaur Designs, sees floral forms reinterpreted and designed as stunning objects for the home and wearable pieces for the body.

Entitled Flower, the homewares collection brings large petal forms together to create a field of flowers, in pieces ranging from servers to flower-like plates. The vases resemble blossoming flowers, long and delicate in shape.

Bold opaques mix with the glowing transparent colours of pastel peach and green, and the warm purple swirl applied to the flower plates evokes the incredible spot-like markings of an orchid.

“This collection is about the sculptural forms of flowers, the unexpected nature of nature,” explains Louise. “It plays on that sense of wonderment that flowers gives us through their form, colour and scent”.

Real reno: all-beige home transformed into entertainer’s dream

While veteran decorators, this seven-year-old federation style home in Pakenham, Victoria, marked the first renovation project for Yvonne Wilkins and her husband Ian. Doing much of the work themselves, they transformed a dated interior, which was all beige (and I mean all beige: ceilings, walls, floors, doors, fixtures and fittings!) into a beautiful entertainer’s home.

“We had the front facade rendered which completely altered the look of our home and we completely revamped the front garden,” explains Yvonne. “Internally, we repainted the entire home with Dulux Antique White; laid Spotted Gum laminate flooring over the old existing terracotta floor tiles; updated the kitchen and installed a 40-metre indoor/outdoor alfresco room.”

Before

After
After

Having originally bought the home in 2012 for $330,000 and selling it in 2014 for $370,000, the whole renovation process cost $20,000, leaving them with a tidy profit of $20,000. “The market was a bit slow at the time,” says Yvonne. “So we would definitely have received a lot more if we had waited for the market to improve. But we just wanted to move again and tackle another project.”

Before: alfresco
Before: alfresco
After: alfresco
After: alfresco

With the alfresco room marking the home’s most significant change, it became a hub of activity all year round. Featuring a raked ceiling and aluminum plantation shutters, the room also housed a barbecue area, a hot spot for family get-togethers. At the time believing this would be their forever home, Yvonne and Ian were adamant about not cutting corners.

“We put all our time and effort into bringing this home to the standard that we were happy with as we were deciding to live in it permanently,” explains Yvonne. “But of course once it was all completed, we got itchy feet and we were looking to tackle another project and decided to sell. We are now in the throes of building a new home and looking forward to landscaping, painting, wallpapering and decorating.”

Also a standout in the home is the kitchen, with the revamp costing only $2,500. “We used a Rust-oleum product in Diamond White to resurface the benchtops; spray painted the Tassie Oak kitchen cupboard doors in an Antique White satin; painted the tiled splashback in a White Knight tile paint and replaced the handles with antique wrought-iron look ones. We also installed two overhead pendant lights above the island bench from Bunnings and matched these lights with the five-tier wrought iron light in the alfresco room.”

Now with one renovation, many decoration projects and even a few new builds under their belt, Yvonne has an abundance of advice for would-be renovators. “Go for it! You not only learn more on the way, but it’s so satisfying to know that you have achieved most of the work yourself. Also make sure that you not only keep to a strict budget, but have a contingency to work to in case you come across any unforeseen surprises, especially in older homes. We were one of the fortunate ones.”

Stunning home styled by Dulux and Ginger & Smart

How absolutely stunning is this Melbourne home?! Styled by Dulux in partnership with fashion designers Alexandra and Genevieve Smart (of Ginger & Smart), the house was brought to life through the colours, textures and mood evoked by their Autumn Winter 2015 collection, Arcadia.

The living room features simple and soft-shaped furniture and accessories that juxtapose with the hard lines of built-in shelves painted in a commanding blue-black shade. The entry walls to the living room echos the Afterglow print in the Arcadia collection through a speckled paint pattern applied to the walls.

The styling of the home’s light-filled kitchen draws on a softer colour palette showcased in the Eclipse print from the collection. Accents of copper reference Ginger & Smart’s signature Rose Gold hardware and contribute to a feeling of luxury that is core to the brand’s nature and design aesthetic. An abstract interpretation of the palm frond found in the Eclipse print cuts through the walls of the kitchen at unexpected angles to accentuate the architectural design of the space as well as demonstrate a creative and easy method to create feature points using paint.

In the bedroom a deep and moody paint colour has been applied to the walls and ceiling, inspired by the collection’s namesake print; Arcadia. Large florals painted in luminous colours fall organically from ceiling to floor to lift the dark mood of the space and complement textural linens and furniture.

The styling project marks the first time Dulux and Ginger & Smart have collaborated. With their recently announced creative partnership set to see them join forces for further projects that blur the line between fashion and interior design.

The Block’s Dani Wales returns to TV this Saturday

After chatting to Dan Reilly about his return to The Block last week, it turns out his partner and ex-Blockhead herself, Dani Wales, will also be making a return to our screens.

Promising not to be yet another home makeover show, the duo will be staying far away from tired concepts and instead focusing on giving Aussies realistic projects that they can do themselves. “You certainly won’t see us running around with paintbrushes doing room reveals before the homeowners arrive home,” explains Dani, who blogs at Basic Habitat. “Healthy Homes TV Australia is about bringing you the latest ideas and products to help you achieve a look or style yourself.”

Each week, Dani and Walt will visit a home and showcase how you too can transform your property. “We’re not tradies and we’re not pretending to be interior designers,” says Walt. “It’s a really honest and down to earth format which really does show you the things you can have a crack at yourself; how to achieve a designer look on a budget or how the latest air-conditioning technology can save you heaps of cash.”

Healthy Homes TV Australia launches Saturday 24 January at 1pm on TEN.

Six things I’ve learned from six months of travel

Hi readers, I’m ho-ome!

Our almost six-month travel adventure around Europe and America is over and we arrived back in Sydney yesterday (the less said about the jet lag, the better!). We have been to so many places (in no particular order): Tuscany, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, London, Oxford, Bath, Geneva, Nice, Monaco, Marrakech, Edinburgh, Skye, Berlin, New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver and Singapore. I know we will talk about and share stories from this trip for the rest of our lives. It has been amazing, but we were more than ready to come home to reality, routine and our friends and family in Australia.

Damian and I on the Brookyln Bridge in New York
Damian and I on the Brookyln Bridge in New York

As with most travels and holidays, they give you the opportunity to take stock and put everything in perspective, so I thought I’d share a few of my key learnings from six months on the road, seeing the world while running my business!

1. I am a massive homebody. I already knew this but nothing could have prepared me for how much I would miss normality and routine and the simple pleasures of home. Top of my list now (as we move in with my excellent in-laws) is finding us a new nest. I can’t wait to have all our things around me again, to not live out of a suitcase and to only have to consider one timezone. I feel like I don’t want to travel or see an airport again for years (although I’m sure my travel bug will be back before then!). But it has made me realise that I am a simple soul, easily pleased by a lot of the little things in life. Just being in my home, with my stuff and my husband, will be amazing! Yay!

2. Although I always try to pick the ones with great design, the things I actually value most in a hotel are good WiFi, a bath and tea and coffee-making facilities! You would not believe the number of top hotels we stayed in (I know, shut up!) that didn’t have a kettle or a coffee maker in the room. This would make my blood pressure rise, even if everything else was perfect. Is it just me that can’t do anything before the first coffee of the day (therefore going out of a hotel to get it is not an option!) and needs a nice cup of tea or herbal tea last thing at night (you don’t need to know how many hot drinks happen in between but suffice to say I am English!)? And tubs! Again, largely influenced by growing up in England, I am a huge bath lover and it upsets me that so many hotels rip them out these days in favour of shower cubicles big enough for about six people! When we came across a hotel with a bath I’d be in my element, especially after the huge amount of exploring we’d do on foot each day. And I have vowed not to move into a new place unless it has a bath. Our last home didn’t have one and even though it was perfect in almost every other way, the lack of bath still pained me. Taking baths is key to my mental health!

3. Technology is brilliant! Despite the fact that for most of the 5.5-month trip I’ve been running this blog with a massive nine-hour time difference and from various hotel rooms and my aunt’s coffee table, it has all gone remarkably well. Some people didn’t even realise I’d gone! Thanks to hotel WiFi, Skype, my trusty (and now quite battered MacBook Pro) and WordPress’ scheduling function, I have been able to do almost everything I needed to on the go, juggling work with sightseeing and family and friend time. I couldn’t have done it without my trusty editorial assistant Olivia back at home on the ground in Sydney (as well as the people I outsource my ad sales and tech support to and trust implicitly). She has been a lifesaver, attending events I obviously couldn’t, writing and being an all round organised superstar. You know what though? I can’t wait to work full-time again and to not have to consider time zones! Being at my own desk is going to make me feel so much more organised and calm! The blog has continued to grow while I’ve been traveling and this is more than I could have hoped for.

4. The people in your life are the most important thing. Of course, I already knew this, but this trip just reinforced that. I feel so incredibly lucky to have friends and family who love me on both sides of the world, in the UK (where I lived until I was 26) and here in Sydney. It really is overwhelming. I left England last week with such mixed feelings of sadness to leave and happiness to be coming back to my Australian friends and in-laws, knowing I’ll return before too long.  You couldn’t really ask for more. An absolute highlight was getting my “little” sister (who is not a fan of flying) on a plane for the first time in years for a family trip to Berlin.

5. I have so much more to see in my own home country. We planned to see loads of the UK but ran out of time after spending a month in the States and taking countless side trips to Europe. Our last trip was to Scotland, where we visited Edinburgh, Inverness, Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye and a few other places in between. Exotic it was not. Sunny, it was not either! But it was beautiful and rugged and vast and I loved it! I really want to see more of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and share that with my Aussie husband, so on future trips “home” we intend to do just that. You know what they say about not appreciating what’s on your doorstep!

6. My marriage is pretty great. Spending 5.5 months 24/7 with any one person is never going to be easy, but we managed not to kill each other. In fact, we did much better than that. What a great first year of marriage we are having. Before you know it, it will be October and our first wedding anniversary!

Thanks to everyone who has taken an interest in our trip for your kind words on Instagram in particular. I hope you have enjoyed sharing our once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

Damian and I in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. A rare moment without rain!
Damian and I in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. A rare moment without rain!

It is great to be back. I’d love to see some of you at the events I’m taking part in with Jason Grant at the new West Elm Chatswood this Saturday and West Elm Chapel Street in Melbourne, next Saturday 6 September. Please RSVP on the stores’ Facebook pages (Chatswood and Chapel Street) if you’d like to attend. Hope to see you there!

You can read some of my travel pieces and hotel reviews from the trip over on the Expedia blog.

Rent my style: Anne’s blank canvas house become homely

Here at Interiors Addict, we just don’t buy into the idea that rental homes have to look bland or lacking in style and personality. Rent My Style is dedicated to showcasing the best of our readers’ rental home decorating efforts. They’re not show homes, they’re real homes!

When Anne Ellard stumbled upon her Brisbane townhouse, she knew she had found a gem. Bright, white and full of open space, she saw it as the perfect blank canvas!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“What drew me to the property when we first went to look at it was the fact that everything was white or neutral; white kitchen, white walls and neutral floor tiles. It was the prefect crisp backdrop for our colourful wall art, reclaimed furniture and vintage unique accessories.”

Anne Ellard - Balcony

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A kitchen designer by trade, Anne has always loved decorating, having constantly rearranged her bedroom furniture from a very young age. Combine this with a very eclectic taste and an appreciation for all design styles and Anne has managed to do what many deem impossible: making a rented house feel homely.

“The addition of artwork on the walls always helps to make a house feel more homely,” explains Anne. “All the photographs on our walls were taken by us so we really feel like we have put our stamp on the place. I’m also a huge fan of cushions and throws, nothing makes a lounge room or bed more homely and cosy than the addition of some comfy cushions!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sharing her home with her husband Joe, they both have a passion for DIY projects and designing their own furniture. Their most recent collaboration saw them design and build an entertainment unit in their living room, something Anne marks as her favourite impermanent change to the house.

“We designed and built an entertainment unit to suit the living space in our home. We designed it to fit around a boxed in corner of the wall so that it has more of a built-in look. We loved the idea of having it floating but obviously didn’t have the option of fixing the cabinets to the wall – so we sat the unit on a recessed base and put some LED ribbon lighting underneath which gives it the effect of floating!”

Anne Ellard - DIY entertainment unit designed by us

Other successful DIY jobs include both their indoor and outdoor dining room table, the former being Anne’s favourite piece of furniture that she salvaged from kerb side collection. “It was very faded and drab looking when we found it. We sanded it right back, painted the beautiful colonial style legs black and oiled the top. I love real wood and oiling the top has brought out some beautiful tones.”

Anne Ellard - Kitchen and Dining Area Anne Ellard - Dining area - restored dining table salvaged from the kerbside

Having a true love affair with furniture, Anne sees one of the benefits of rental decorating being that she can experiment. That she doesn’t have to worry about investing in the expensive pieces that may or may not suit her future home. “We don’t spend as much on furniture and accessories for our rental home as we would if it was our own home,” says Anne. “There’s always that thought in your head that this isn’t your house and the furniture you choose now might not be what you want for your new home when you eventually buy somewhere.”

How to achieve feng shui in a contemporary space

By Adam Liebson

Ask anybody in the interior design business about feng shui and they will tell you that it can be a little complicated. It takes years for someone to become a master of feng shui, but there are some simple tenets that can be used by anyone to achieve a better environment in their contemporary home.

Burma_ Thailand

So what is feng shui?

To give you an overview, feng shui is centred around the idea of creating positive energy in the home, office, or any other space that you spend a lot of time in. This use of life force energy, also known as ‘qi/chi’ (pronounced chee), to influence positivity is a time-tested formula that promotes healthy living conditions and good fortune for a person.

Feng shui works well in contemporary and modern designs, as the minimalist approach and lack of clutter allow the qi/chi to circulate unimpeded around the home.

Achieving feng shui in your home: colour

China Bamboo ConsoleA basic principle of feng shui is the five key elements of Wood, Earth, Fire, Water and Metal. Different colours are associated with each of these elements, and can be used to promote good feng shui in different areas of your life. For example:

Wood: Brown and green. The colour green is primarily used for the balancing of family life and improving your health. These colours do well in all rooms where the family tends to congregate.

Earth: Light brown, pale yellow, and sandy, earthy colours. These colours are used to centre your energy and promote harmony in your life, and are best when used in an area of the home that you use for resting. This is primarily the bedroom, but if, for example, if you enjoy long, relaxing bubble baths, neutral earthy colours are an excellent colour palette for your bathroom.

Fire: Red, orange, pink, purple and yellow. Strong yellow colours are used to promote cheerful gatherings and happy times, and so are excellent for the entertaining areas of the home.

Water: Blue and black. Water is a nourishing element, so should be used primarily to support the growth of your career, wealth, and family. To have a blue colour palette in the hallways and corridors of your home promotes the flowing of positive energy from room to room.

Metal: Grey and white. Pure white provides supportive energy to all creative endeavours. These colours are best used in studies and offices, as they allow the mind to broaden and intuitive thinking to happen. A white wall is a blank slate on which the imagination can take hold.

Cures

Orient House Mirror

It is relatively simple to add these effective ‘cures’ to your home to create positive energy.

Crystals: Crystals are used in feng shui to create a specific ‘vibration’ or energy. For example, rose quartz can be used to attract romance and love. A great way to display crystals is in a shallow decorative bowl.

Mirrors: Mirrors are thought not only to expand a space, but can also be used to draw in more positive energy. However, they should never be placed opposite the main door as it is said they then reflect outwards the positive energy trying to enter the home.

Fountains: Fountains are popular in feng shui as they bring water energy into the home, and water is traditionally thought to represent wealth and prosperity. Fountains can be used both indoor and out, and provide an excellent focal point for a room.

Java_Africa

Buddha: As a symbol of peace, calm and serenity, Buddha’s presence in your home will promote a contemplative energy. This can help you with self-reflection, and will also work as a calming force. Even just placing a small buddha figurine unobtrusively on a sideboard can have a soothing effect on your home’s vibrations.

How to know when you’ve achieved feng shui

orient house umbrella room

Have you ever had that feeling when you walk into a room and for no apparent reason you suddenly feel happy, comforted, or just generally a little more positive? This feeling is qi, and it’s a sign that you’ve designed your contemporary space right.

But if you feel uncomfortable or negative when you walk into a room, it may mean that you need a master of feng shui to give you a hand with bringing positive energy back into your home.

Dan and Dani sell first property since The Block

Two-time Blockheads Dan Reilly and Dani Wales know a lot when it comes to renovating and selling homes. But this time there are no TV cameras and they’re selling their very own apartment.

Dan and Dani in Apartment

Situated in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, it is the first property they have renovated since being on 2012’s The Block and 2013’s The Block All Stars.

The pair purchased the one-bed apartment just before they had their TV debut, which saw them juggle renovating The Block house and moving in. “It was such a hectic week as we were working on the master bedroom and en suite on The Block whilst trying to move into our apartment at the same time,” explained Dan.

Good looking storage ideas to suit your home

You spent weeks agonising over the right rug for the dining room and had a never-ending Pinterest board for your kitchen reno. But now your rug is less of a feature than the piles of paperwork on the dining table and you never seem to have enough room on your kitchen counters. Sound familiar?
