A lack of floor space doesn’t have to mean a crammed, design-lacking bathroom. The creative use of the available space can transform even small guest bathrooms and toilets into big bathroom brilliances.
In tight spaces, the focus should be on the base elements and their arrangement. Duravit advise an efficient layout can be achieved with a narrow-edged handrise basin, or with an extra-short projection and side-mounted tap fitting. Oblong shapes, such as those in the Vero and 2nd floor series, are particularly well suited to smaller rooms. They fit in any corner and are more compact than semi-circular basins of the same size.
When space is scarce, wall-mounted toilets with a shorter projection are a good idea. As for all the germaphobes out there, Duravit offers an antibacterial ceramic glaze as a nifty addition to their reduced length toilets. For guest rooms, Duravit’s innovative OpenSpace B shower enclosure simply folds back against the wall after use, significantly increasing the room to move.
A loving attention to detail, design flourishes and smart storage can all help increase the utility of the available space. Limiting the materials used to just a few creates a clean, stylish effect. Thoughtful touches such as soap, a brush and lotion round off the picture and turn the guest bathroom into the pride of the house.
Elegance, beauty, grace – there are plenty of words to describe Smeg’s new stand mixer. Throw in power, performance and Italian engineering, and you’d think I was describing a Ferrari.
Looking past the elegant curves and vintage styling, the new stand mixer features an 800W high-torque motor that can mix the heaviest dough or batter while remaining perfectly stationary on the workbench, with no vibrations.
Stand out features include soft start action (to prevent flour plumes and splashes), a pouring shield, ten speeds and a concealed outlet for optional accessories such as a pasta roller. Speeds are controlled via a top-mounted gear stick, with a handy guide advising which speeds are recommended for which mixing tool.
True to Italian standards, the body is made from die-cast aluminium available in black, silver, panna, red and pastel blue, and the 4.8 litre capacity bowl is top-notch stainless steel.
The Smeg Stand Mixer ($799) is available nationally from David Jones, Myer and Harvey Norman stores.
In the mood to give your home a Spring restyle? I’m so excited to have teamed up with Sydney shopping centre Castle Towers to give you the chance to go on a $1000 half-day homewares shopping and styling session with yours truly! There’s nothing I love more than helping other people spend their money (even better if they won it!) and getting them excited about buying things to make their home feel a bit more special.
It’s in celebration of their newly launched spring/summer campaign Age of Style, which is encouraging women of all ages to celebrate their personal sense of style, whether that’s through their wardrobe or the way they dress their home.
Castle Towers is a leading shopping, fashion and entertainment destination in Sydney’s North West (and I should know because I live just down the road in Beecroft!), with more than 300 stores providing an eclectic mix of fashion, homewares and accessories, including many unique to the centre.
It’s a great destination for unique homewares in particular. Stores include Ahina, Maison de Lux and Laura Ashley. There are also plenty of high street favourites like Bed Bath N’ Table, Country Road (who doesn’t love their homewares?!), Adairs and Sheridan, as well as your budget homewares destinations like Typo and Kmart.
Spring is a great time to refresh your home for the warmer months with a good declutter and a change up of your accessories to something perhaps lighter and brighter; think new cushions, a change of rug and more seasonal decor items. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best advice they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Jen Bishop, publisher and editor of Interiors Addict and Reno Addict.
1. What is your favourite cafe?
I love The Boatshed at Balmoral, which is my favourite Sydney beach. The food and coffee are always great and the location and styling are gorgeous!
2. What is your favourite holiday destination?
It’s way too hard to pick just one so I’ll cheat! The most interesting and awe-inspiring place I’ve ever been is Luxor in Egypt, probably my favourite ever city is Paris (I first went when I was 18, my first trip overseas without parents, fell in love with it and couldn’t stop returning) and I’ll never ever get sick of New York.
3. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
For my last birthday, my husband brought my best friend over from the UK as a surprise. Having just had baby Seb a couple of months before, it was amazing to share this special time with her in Sydney.
4. What is your favourite book?
(OK, so I’m not good at picking just one thing!). From a business perspective, I got a lot out of Thrive by Ariana Huffington and The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. My favourite childhood books are The Railway Children, The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland. And as an adult, some of my favourite novels include The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice and The Picture of Dorian Gray (I’m a sucker for the classics!).
5. What is your favourite piece of furniture you own?
I just love my vintage marble-topped coffee table which was a bargain eBay find. Sadly it is a complete death/serious injury trap for kids so I’ve had to move it out of the living room now I’m a mum!
Fresh and utterly contemporary, Royal Doulton’s second bed linen range from Legend Australia is sure to impress.
Pacific Navy
The new Spring/Summer collection complements the warmer months with its seasonal colour palletes on abstract patterns paired with luxurious fabrics. The focus is summer; colours include fresh sage, elegant navy and relaxed neutrals all with a generous addition of crisp white.
Fable Sage
The sets can all be mix and matched to create a totally unique look for your bedroom. Most of the quilt covers even have a different pattern on the reverse – bonus!
Tate Sage
The new collection includes Pacific Navy, an abstract take on the summer waves using a timeless palette of crisp white flowing onto shades of deep blue. This design lends itself to a fresh and casual layering of Archer Pewter sheets with Harper Navy cushions.
Fable Sage features floral motifs mixed with navy and white, in a cotton sateen print. It teams up well with the intricate white foliage pattern of Gorman White.
Belvedere
If you’re after a more elegant take on the warmer hues, Tate Sage is the answer. With stripes of minty green, navy and silver on fresh white, the design is sophisticated and vibrant without being overstated.
Another design is Belvedere, featuring soothing neutrals on crystal stemware patterns. With a flange in white on the quilt cover and pillowcases, the result is an elegant double-layered look.
Malone
The cherry on top is the luxurious selection of cushions. Available in cotton slub, brushed velvet, or cotton canvas, some cushions feature cord piping and hand-embroidered beading.
This is the epitome of contemporary bedding elegance. Take a look at the full collection online.
Legend Australia has done it again, taking Florence Broadhurst’s iconic designs to produce a timeless yet contemporary bedlinen collection for Spring/Summer 2015.
The latest Japanese-inspired designs include relaxed botanical prints such as Spotted Floral in Chambray and Japanese Floral in Pontoon. The delicate patterning of The Cranes in classic White or more dramatic Navy are perfectly coloured for warm summer nights.
A more formal print, Medallion Silver, utilises a repeat centrepoint motif to great effect while Zig Zag Natural is a striking interlock geometric in warm grey on summer white.
Customisable is this collections’s middle name, with each quilt boasting a different print on the reverse. Each design even has several options in colour and pattern to choose from – coordinate these with the mix of cushions, throws and bathroom towels on offer and you have a truly unique bed linen collection.
Florence Broadhurst bedlinen is available nationally from David Jones and bedlinen specialists.
Smeg has added to the allure of its coveted pure retro collection of small appliances with a powerful 800W blender.
The new blender’s design focuses on the same 50s-inspired vintage curves as Smeg’s existing toaster, stand mixer and kettle.
Available in in panna, black, red, silver and, my personal favourite, pastel blue, it features an enamel-coated body and Tritan BPA-free 1.5L jug.
The backlit chrome control knob allows you to select from three pre-set programmes: smoothie, for dense and creamy textures; crushed ice; and pulse, which increases the speed gradually.
With four speeds, the blender has a clever smooth-start function, meaning the blades start slowly and mix all your ingredients efficiently. Perfect smoothie? I think so!
Smeg’s latest creation, along with the rest of its small appliances, is available at David Jones, Myer and Harvey Norman stores.
Inspired by lavish decade-old estates and heirloom antiques paired with diverse Australian landscapes, new candle brand Peppermint Grove Australia brings luxury and timeless sophistication to modern day contemporary living.
Hand-poured in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, their soy candles and room diffusers not only smell amazing, but also add classic elegance to any room with their highly polished and beveled glass.
Available in 10 core fragrances, each product has a fragrance story printed on the back.
Stocked in over 300 boutique gift and homewares stores around Australia, each retailer is the exclusive stockist in their suburb or town.

The new Words of Wisdom mugs from designer Cristina Re are perfect for starting your morning on a positive note.
Available in Blush, Ebony or Ivory, these little darlings are made from the finest quality porcelain and are finished off with delicate hand painted affirmations in 24ct gold.
Mix and match them with other tea cups, plates and cake stands from the Signature and Designer Cristina Re ranges. Available nationally at David Jones, selected lifestyle stores and online.
In collaboration with Legend Australia, Wedgwood’s first ever bedlinen collection has arrived – and it is delicious!
Wild Strawberry
Drawing inspiration from the brand’s own teaware patterns, the Spring/Summer 2015 range is a fresh, contemporary (and not to mention luxurious) take on the classics.
Hibiscus
The five designs include Wild Strawberry, a finely printed pattern of pink blossoms, verdant leaves and succulent fruit on a crisp white background, Hibiscus, a palette of indigo blues that was inspired by a Wedgwood pattern dating back to 1810, and Night & Day, a complex mix of white on white pattern and weaves.
Night & Day
All the sheet sets come in pure cotton sateen fabrics with self- flange trims and elegant detailing. They also have towels, cushions and throws to match, and are available nationally at David Jones.
Mixing stunning designs with trans-seasonal tones, new bedding brand Flat+Fitted by Caroline Crivera, aims to create a timeless, yet modern appeal.
Morocco
Designed and made in Melbourne, their first luxurious collection features strong geometrical patterns to create the perfect chic bedroom.
Harmony
There are four designs to choose from, each with its own bold design, yet subtle enough to mix with pre-existing linen. There’s warm Honeycomb, soft grey hexagons printed on white fabric, and Melody, a deep mustard geometric pattern that would perfectly compliment any timber in the room. Harmony, inspired by Japanese gardens, mixes curves and straight lines with a rich olive green to create a tranquil haven perfect for curling up. Perhaps the boldest design of the range, Morocco draws from Morrocan traditional bathroom tiling to bring an exotic navy look.
Melody
Each quilt cover in the Flat+Fitted range is made from 100% Egyptian cotton and comes with matching pillowcases and sheet.
Is anyone else getting excited about spring being around the corner? After months stuck inside with the heating on, keeping a newborn (and his parents!) warm, I can’t wait to be able to throw open the doors and windows and smell the fresh air! Like many Australians, I love switching up my decor for the warmer months to make everything a bit brighter and more relaxed. This winter, we’ve been rocking a grey and gold colour scheme but I’m ready for something a little more colourful and fun for the next few months so I was excited to have a play with some of Freedom’s latest homewares at my place (I think this might just be the first time I’ve given readers a look inside this home too!).
There is no shortage of sunshine yellows in the latest range which instantly say summer! Such a happy hue! And even though it’s getting warmer, I still like to keep texture in my interiors. The absolute easiest and most cost-effective way to do this is through a mix ‘n match collection of cushions. You can see from my picks (all of those pictured are from Freedom, from $34.95 to $49.95) that there’s plenty of different materials and the knitted and quilted looks are my favourites.
The simple decorative turquoise and yellow metal ornaments on the table (just $9.95 and $4.95, BARGAIN!) are a great way to tie in the colours from the cushions and throw and very on trend. Likewise, this fab rug introduces little pops of colour without being over the top. There are a lot of same-same rugs on the market and this one’s a real standout and a generous size (160x230cm).
Your home shouldn’t be a show home, but it should rather make you smile and feel comfortable and relaxed. When my home’s feeling just right, I love opening the door at the end of a busy day!
I found it really liberating to introduce so much colour into my home. Maybe being a new mum has got me more used to brights and made me a little more fun?! What do you think of this look? Sebastian loves it 😉
We are so excited to be offering the Interiors Addict + inSTUDIO Scholarship (you can read all about it here), where, in partnership with iscd’s brand new inSTUDIO campus, we are offering one lucky reader a full-time design course worth more than $18,000 as well mentoring and work experience with interior designer of the year 2014 Greg Natale and Block judge Darren Palmer! I’m tempted to enter myself, but having just graduated journalism, I think I need a break from studying for now!
With applications closing soon — 5 June — we thought now was the perfect time to have a chat with successful iscd graduate, Manel Daetz. So, if you’re still debating whether to apply, be inspired by Manel and just imagine… if you enter and win, in a few years’ time you could be just like her: living out your dream of being an interior designer. But enough from me, let’s hear from the woman herself.
Manel
What course did you take at iscd?
They had so much to offer I decided to do as many as I could. I did: Certificate VI /Associate Diploma of Colour and Design, Surface & Textile Design, Colour Consulting, Interior Styling and Interior Design.
What did you get out of the courses?
iscd’s continual encouragement to focus on my individual design styles and support me in persuing my creativity as a career was something that shaped my working life immeasurably. The constant opportunities to push our individual creative limits through every project shaped me into the designer that I am today. It was one of the best learning experiences I have had to date. Creatively, it also gave me the technical skills and the ability to experience different areas of design from textiles and surfaces to interiors and furniture.
Manel’s work
When did you graduate and what have you done since?
I graduated in 2001 and worked in the interior design industry in both residential and commercial design and also designed and hand-made furniture. The most recent design adventure that I have embarked on was to become creative director of Henry Corbett & Co. where we work with our clients to design and build their ideal spaces.
What do you think about the Interiors Addict + inSTUDIO Scholarship?
I think that it is a brilliant idea. It allows an up and coming designer to experience and learn from designers in the industry who love and adore the craft. The experience that is gained from that guidance at the start of a person’s career is so valuable and also helps to create great people to work with in the industry.
How vital were your iscd qualifications in getting you to where you are today?
I believe that having the opportunity to start the iscd course at a young age gave me the knowledge, insight and technical ability to launch the exciting career I have today. The encouragement and creative support given to us as students by the educators at iscd was amazing. It is truly a place where your design abilities and natural gifts are encouraged and nurtured.
Of course it was only a matter of time before I shared some photos and a little more about the birth of our little bundle Sebastian! So rather than completely #babyspam Instagram, here are a few snaps for those of you who have sent your well wishes and asked after him, for which we are really grateful. We have been so touched by everyone’s interest and thankful for the many beautiful gifts he has been sent. Thank you all!
In hospital
Our little man, who is two weeks old today, was born at the San in Wahroonga, which was an altogether amazing healthcare experience. We were so well looked after and guided and had the pleasure of meeting countless wonderful midwives (these women — and one man — are amazing!). Kudos too to our brilliant obstetrician Peter Wood. Sebastian was 10 days late and I ended up being induced. He arrived a little over three hours later at 3.55am weighing 3.07 kilos or 6lb 12 in old money. To say things moved quickly after he kept us waiting, would be an understatement! Phew! But the main thing is, he arrived safe and well. When he was placed on my chest, my first thought was “I think I may explode with love,” followed by how much he didn’t look like a mini version of his dad, as we had both expected. We are still trying to work out which of us he looks most like and he changes a bit every couple of days.
The next day: tired, happy and lippie back on!
Everyone tells you what a life changing, overwhelming and amazing experience having your first child is, and you imagine it must be, but the enormity of it doesn’t hit you until you’re actually in the position of being a mum. I feel like the luckiest woman alive and if it’s at all possible, I love my husband even more now that he is the father of my child, and he is proving to be a fantastic daddy who was amazing during labour. We got home last Saturday, just in time for my first Mother’s Day. Having lost my mum as a young child, this is usually quite a sad occasion for me. But this year, being a mother myself for the first time, it was really special.
At the weekend, my dad arrived from the UK to meet his first grandchild for the first time. We are looking forward to spending lots of quality family time together while acting editor Olivia runs the show for a while! We have been out and about for a few outings and survived and Sebastian is feeding and sleeping well (which is of course all relative when you’re talking about a newborn!). As L-plate parents, Damian and I are definitely learning as we go!
Thanks again for all your well wishes and gifts. We are all feeling the love!
Today is a very exciting day as I’ve been wanting to offer an Interiors Addict scholarship to a promising young designer for years. I’m delighted to announce that we have partnered with iscd’s brand new inSTUDIO campus to offer one lucky reader a full-time design course worth more than $18,000 as well as money can’t buy mentoring and work experience with interior designer of the year Greg Natale and The Block judge Darren Palmer!
inSTUDIO is a new design school in North Sydney which opened its doors last month for its first intake. Run by iscd, who have been teaching colour and design in Sydney for over three decades, this new campus caters to school leavers who wish to study interior design or for those who are wanting to study full-time or part-time and access VET FEE-HELP. Graduates can choose from exciting career opportunities such as styling, residential or commercial interior design and stage and set design just to name a few.
We are so excited to be able to be able to offer someone this opportunity in partnership with such an established and respected school. We know we have countless aspiring designers, decorators and stylists among our readership and love offering them inspiration through interviews with the best in the business and how-to advice articles. We also give them a free place to advertise their availability for internships and entry level industry positions via our jobs board. But this scholarship really does enable us to go one further!
Greg Natale and I

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of industry briefs and assignments with companies such as Designer Rugs, Temple and Webster and Scentre Group (owners of Westfield). Each class is taught by robustly experienced educators who are all still practicing industry professionals with a wealth of knowledge to share. This is combined with industry excursions and internships to ensure that each student is fully equipped to embark on an exciting new career once they graduate.
inSTUDIO is offering one lucky Interiors Addict reader an exclusive scholarship opportunity. The scholarship includes the Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration (full-time study from August 2015 to July 2016), the opportunity to be an inSTUDIO ambassador, one-on-one mentoring from Greg and Darren and the chance to see their work featured here on Interiors Addict.
It was in the sleep-deprived state of early motherhood that Diana Campbell came up with the idea for The Third Row. Time poor but a lover of online shopping, she desperately wanted a single website where she could find the latest products from independent stores which had been mentioned by her favourite blogs and magazines. So, she decided to turn the idea into reality.
Diana
“The Third Row extracts the newest products from stores so shoppers can see the latest products uploaded in the past 24 hours. We also keep tabs on what’s mentioned by influential bloggers and Instagrammers, so people can see which products are trending on social media.”
For a time-poor customer, The Third Row is very easy to use: simply search or browse (cushions and ceramics are Diana’s favourites!). “It’s really simple to use. When you click ‘Buy’ you’ll be taken to the store’s website to purchase. If you’re looking for shopping inspiration just scroll down the homepage. Products are listed by those ‘Most recently mentioned’ by blogs, Instagrammers and magazines.”
However, The Third Row isn’t only good for consumers, it also helps their 150+ small retailers, offering an affordable PR service. “When they join, we set up a store page for them, showcasing publicity received in the past six months and extracting their latest products onto the site every 48 hours. Once up and running, they can reach the creativity loving, design-hungry, time-poor shoppers who visit The Third Row to search for products. We can also help them get their products featured by top bloggers (including Interiors Addict!) and Instagrammers at a fraction of the cost of a banner ad.”
So if you’re a blogger, how do you get involved, like we have? “Stores on The Third Row can invite you to feature their products on your blog and Instagram account for a fee. You’ll earn every time you mention a product from a store who’s invited you, with 10% of the mention fee going to Assist A Sista, a charity which helps victims of domestic violence set themselves up in safe new homes.” Our publisher Jen Bishop, says: “We love supporting small businesses and sharing our favourite finds from independents but realise they don’t have the big budgets of many of our advertisers. Offering them the chance to pay an affordable amount for a mention by us — which is fully disclosed and only provided we love what they do — is a concept I was really keen on. The fact it also supports a very worthwhile charity is fantastic!”
As a huge lover of small and independent retailers, Diana is very proud of the unique business she’s been able to create. “I’ve always loved independent stores and everything they represent — promoting exciting and unusual products, contributing to the diversity and character of places and supporting small, family run creative businesses, has been amazing. I’m super proud that we’ve designed a business model that helps independent stores, bloggers and Instagrammers, and an incredibly important charity like Assist A Sista.”
We think the best way to understand how it works, as a customer, retailer or blogger, is to hop online and check it out.
I’m delighted to announce that the Interiors Addict Shop has launched and is open for business online. Happy shopping!
I teamed up with my friend and interior stylist Naomi Findlay of Silk Home to curate our own range of limited edition decorative homewares. We hope you love them as much as we do. Once they’re gone, they’re gone, and if all goes well, we’ll look at releasing new collections twice a year.
The first range, Monochrome & Metallics is, as the name suggests, largely black and white, gold and copper. That said, we couldn’t resist one little pop of Interior Addict fuchsia! Products range from decorative bowls for your coffee table through to a versatile black and copper side table/stool.
All our prices include shipping Australia wide.
