Interiors Addict at home: our new outdoor relaxing space

This post is sponsored by IKEA

My new look deck, complete with lounging AND dining areas

We recently moved into our first house in Sydney. While the huge deck that runs the length of said house seemed fantastic at first, having come from an apartment with a small, square balcony, we didn’t have much to fill it. Our Weber Baby Q still looks very lost and sorry for itself! We rushed out and bought a cheap and large dining solution (who has money when they’ve just moved, right?) at IKEA which gave us a taste of the range and value on offer. We opted for two lots of the ASKHOLMEN table and four chairs ($149 each) and put them together, which gave us a long, solid timber dining set for eight for less than $300! I know!

But our massive deck (first world problems) still looked empty and we really wanted a nice, cosy, outdoor-room type, relaxing space for morning coffees and lazy Sundays with friends. I wanted to be able to walk outside the back door and slump into something comfy on a nice afternoon. So when IKEA offered to help me out with some furniture, I couldn’t refuse.

I started by looking online for inspiration and quickly settled on the ARHOLMA modular lounges which have a million options, from a neat two-seater which would fit a balcony (and comes in two pieces so could actually get up stairs!) to something, well, as big as you like. You basically buy units of it, and corners, and make an L-shape, U-shape, or just a regular lounge shape from two seats and up. We went for a two-seater and a slightly larger four-seater L-shape to sit opposite it for a nice social setting. We mixed things up a bit by using a much treasured vintage, marble-topped coffee table bought on eBay years ago (which doesn’t work in our new lounge room indoors) and I really love how it looks. It cost me $60 so I’m not too precious about how it fares outside and it kind of adds to its character!

Now I love a spot of reading outside on a balmy evening!

There is a matching coffee table available for ARHOLMA however. Well, it’s actually a unit which can be the L part of an L-shape lounge or you can buy the glass top and make it a table. Again, flexibility wins!

I love neutrals outside. Let nature do the talking and make the colour, I say. How about you? If you’re the same as me, Into the Fold have some fab monochrome outdoor cushions.

When you think about it, it makes sense that IKEA, with their European heritage, design plenty of outdoor furniture for small spaces and balconies. Although we’re definitely a nation of outdoor entertainers in Australia, it can be hard to find solutions for tighter spaces and there are no shortage of apartment dwellers, alongside those lucky enough to have a spacious back yard. IKEA has both covered.

I really love this IKEA solution for small balconies
I really love this IKEA solution for small balconies

Amanda Grant, IKEA’s sales leader for outdoor furniture, says alongside its European background, one of the brand’s biggest advantages when it comes to outdoor furniture is its vast experience in indoor furniture. “We have an amazing range around different style preferences and price points, from basic modern to more traditional, to suit different lifestyles and wallets.” There are plenty of larger, more substantial dining and lounging solutions if that’s what you’re after.

IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!
IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!

There’s a core range of outdoor available at IKEA year-round and then extra things are introduced around summer time. But from this year, for the first time, there’ll be new ranges added in July/August as well as February, which makes sense considering Australians only really stay inside for about two or three months of the year!

Amanda says while their outdoor dining range is already well known, they hope customers will come to look at them as an option for great lounging options as well.

Personally, I think the ARHOLMA is great value ( a three-seater sofa is just $412 for example) and so flexible. It’s good to know we can change it around at a later date or add to it if we move house etc. I’ll be honest with you, it is not easy to put together and requires serious patience (lucky husband and brother-in-law got this job!) but it does all go together in the end, no missing parts, just fiddly! And that, in my opinion, is the price you pay for such good value. You can’t have it all! They do offer a paid for assembly service or I’d suggest trying Airtasker for someone to do the job for you as an alternative.

We also picked the cute timber ASKHOLMEN (tying in with our existing dining set) table ($39) and two chairs ($30 each) for a shady spot under a tree at the bottom of the garden beyond the deck.

And there are many other finishing touches available for your yard, deck or balcony too, from solar and LED lighting to hardy outdoor plants to sun shades (parasols and gazebos), planter boxes and lanterns.

Something you might want to check out is the great value instant flooring, perfect for disguising an ugly old concrete balcony floor in minutes!

We’re so happy with our new chillout area and feel we’ve gained a new outdoor room and some extra livable space. And while we still need a bigger barbecue, we’ll get there eventually!

Next stop: get tired-looking deck stained! The shame…

Until TOMORROW (22 January 2015) only, if you’re an IKEA Family member (it’s free to join) get a $50 voucher for every $250 you spend on outdoor lounging furniture. See website for terms and conditions.

6 reasons you won’t participate in 7 Vignettes. And why they’re nonsense!

I’ve been pondering this post for a really long time. I am completely in love with our 7 Vignettes community on Instagram and it gives me so much joy to see what people get out of the experience and how supportive everyone is of each other. I’m also blown away by the beautiful images but that almost comes second! It genuinely makes me feel sad and frustrated when I hear people saying they’re too intimidated to take part because the standard is so high, or that they don’t have time, or the right props. I wanted to debunk all these myths and encourage you to give it a go, just once, then come back and tell me you didn’t love it! Please read on for my roundup of the most common excuses and why they’re nonsense!

1. I don’t have enough cool stuff. Pft! Nonsense! Some of our best images contain seashells, hairy string, flowers from the garden, a corner of a textured rug, pieces of fruit, a cuppa or a chubby baby’s hand! It’s not about owning lots of designer homewares, it’s about how you put the stuff together, the natural light, the composition, even the Instagram filter. And sometimes (often) simple is best. As they say, it’s not what you’ve got, it’s what you do with it that counts!

2. I’m intimidated by how good everyone else is. This is probably the biggest issue people have. I draw your attention to these recent comments…

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 6.29.08 PM

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 6.28.27 PM

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 6.27.28 PM

I totally get it though. We have some super talented participants. It blows me away every month! But the absolute BEST thing about the 7 Vignettes community — even better than the beautiful feed of images — is the sense of community and all the lovely encouraging and friendly words for each other’s efforts. Take part and get to know them. You might even make a few new friends. I can promise you I have never ever heard of an incidence of anyone telling someone else theirs wasn’t up to scratch! And think what you can learn from these clever and inspiring people! Any doubts are in your own head only.

3. I’m a newbie and have no chance of winning when up against everyone else who has been doing it for two years. Ask @mintandfizz about that. She won the December 2014 round on her very first attempt!

@mintandfizz
@mintandfizz

4. My home isn’t stylish enough. Again, 7 Vignettes isn’t about showcasing cool or expensive stuff or even your home. Interiors Addict’s motto is, after all, style without the snobbery! You don’t even have to show us any of your home if you don’t want to. Most people don’t. It’s less about interiors and more about creativity, fun and enjoyment.

5. I feel guilty taking part in something so self-indulgent when I should be hanging out with my kids. Enough with the mother guilt already (let’s face it, the overwhelming majority of participants are female, this is not me being sexist)! I’ve heard comments to this effect a few times and it really bothers me. Why not take a little time out for yourself to do something creative for a few minutes for seven days of the month? It doesn’t have to be every month. If you’re stuck in a job that you don’t love, this could be one of your only creative outlets. Your kids may want to join in too and be inspired by watching your creativity in action. This happens all the time and sometimes we get to see the little ones’ vignette attempts too (super cute)! We love seeing little hands in parents’ vignettes too. And we laugh when we hear the stories of husbands who just don’t get it. Share the outtakes and the funny stories with us. Most of all, keep it real!

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 7.00.09 PMAnd, if you truly believe 7 Vignettes is too self-indulgent a pastime for a mother that’s fine, but please keep it to yourself and don’t make others feel guilty, okay? Thanks!

6. I just don’t have time. My biggest advice here is not to over think it. And I hear time and time again that the most spontaneous vignettes can be the best. You can even set yourself a timer to make it more fun and challenging! Don’t just take it from me though…

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 6.30.00 PM

So, I really hope that hearing from readers who may have felt you once upon a time and are now hooked on 7 Vignettes and loving it, will encourage you to have a go yourself! I dare you to come and join Instagram’s friendliest community! We even have events throughout the year where you can meet each other.

The next 7 Vignettes challenge starts on 1 February 2015. To be first to receive the themes list, make sure you sign up to our newsletter. For step by step instructions, go here and please ask any questions in the comments below.

The year that was for Design Twins & their concrete homewares

We love supporting small businesses in the interiors and homewares industry and last year, one couple (in love and business) stood out. They were Crystal Bailey and Mitchel Lindsay from Design Twins and we are a bit smug with ourselves for having been the first blog to feature their gorgeous concrete wares!

Crystal and Mitch of Design Twins
Crystal and Mitch of Design Twins

The business was in fact, only launched six months ago in June. “The adventure has become a dream come true,” Crystal says. “We spent the start of the year working on original designs that no one had ever seen before and decided to make them all out of an industrial obsession with concrete! It turned out to be so much fun that we would start selling them at the markets. We started to gain a fair amount of interest on social media when we started participating in Interiors Addict’s 7 Vignettes challenge (thank you for being the reason I woke up so early, half asleep in my PJs to take a styled shot!), so setting up a website seemed like a natural thing to do. Once our website was live, our orders were so huge, that we had to move out of our tiny little apartment and into a home with a workshop. It was bittersweet, because we still miss that cute little place on the beach!”

A few weeks later, the couple started receiving a large amount of interest from stockists around the country and decided to move Design Twins into a warehouse, where they juggled business with other jobs and family and then Crystal found out she was six weeks pregnant on her 30th birthday!

(I told you they had a big year!)

“The following month, we moved home and our warehouse again, but it all finally works perfectly and we are working on a brand new collection,” says Crystal. “It’s definitely the hardest we have ever worked, but everything has been so worth it. We have had our products featured in our favourite magazines such as Real Living, Marie Claire and Inside Out and currently have our products stocked in the most beautiful homewares stores such as Fenton & Fenton, Ahoy Trader and The Minimalist. We were also invited to teach sold out concrete classes at The School by Megan Morton.”

In October, Design Twins exhibited at Grand Designs Live and they had a sale event on Temple & Webster.

“All of this, with huge amounts of online orders, and it’s been one crazy, fun, exhausting but rewarding year for us! Everything happened so naturally that we actually can’t explain how it all happened, but we have always remained inspired by others, constantly designing and true to ourselves.”

Crystal credits stylist Megan Morton for the initial inspiration to launch the business, after attending one of her workshops, which she described as life-changing.

Introducing the 7 Vignettes Gather Journal from Rainy Sunday

I am so excited to reveal to you an exciting collaboration that has been in the pipeline for months: Rainy Sunday’s 7 Vignettes Gather Journal. For the hundreds of you who take part in our monthly Instagram challenge, here’s somewhere gorgeous for you to keep all your styling inspiration together and you can buy it in time for Christmas (as a gift) or the January round of the competition (for yourself!).

7 vignettes gather journal rainy sunday interiors addict
Don’t you love that copper foil?!

The gather journals are the brainchild of Frith Hucks from Rainy Sunday and I leapt at the chance to get Interiors Addict involved. Rainy Sunday has evolved from a home enterprise making drinking jars (on a rainy Sunday) into a fully fledged homewares design business. Their products are often a modern take on old school ideas, so creating a series of journals with this in mind seemed quite natural.

Photo: Nikki Hernan
Photo: Nikki Hernan

“Having dabbled with the 7 Vignettes Instagram challenge myself, I realised how much thought and planning goes in to each theme,” Frith says. “Why not create a journal that both inspired and helped participants create their best vignettes each month for the challenge? Rather than just a journal with blank pages, the Gather Journal gives you the background to 7 Vignettes, fantastic tips from previous challenge winner Nikki Hernan (aka Brown Paper Lemon) to help improve your compositions and ideas on where you can get more inspiration. It’s not just a regular journal – it really is a place for gathering.”

Photo: Nikki Hernan

From my point of view, the journal was a brilliant opportunity to showcase some of the work of one our very talented participants and blog readers, Nikki, who could not have been more excited to have her photos featured on its pages! “7 Vignettes gives you the freedom to be as expressive as you like, drawing from life experiences and connecting trinkets and heirlooms to tell tales and acknowledge loved ones,” Nikki says. “The old saying ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ rings true within vignettes. Exhibiting not only inanimate objects but also the mood that the artist is feeling. My style has has been enriched by this learning process which I look forward to continuing to explore.”

The 7 Vignettes Gather Journal is the first in a series of journals Rainy Sunday will release next year including editions for green juices and flower arranging. “Hopefully there will be lots of feedback from this Gather Journal that we’ll use to help us enhance the design and inspiration we include in our next ones,” adds Frith.

You can get your hands on the first Gather Journals ($23 each) at Finders Keepers Sydney tonight (Friday 12 December 2014) or online from today.

Prepare for more nursery posts: I’m pregnant!

I’m not going to be able to keep it a secret for much longer and, safely on the other side of our 19-week scan yesterday, I have some exciting news to share: I’m pregnant! Interiors Addict is no longer my only baby!

I tried to keep it quiet but my rapidly expanding belly is starting to give it away. And then I got busted a few times on Instagram when well-meaning friends made comments on totally non-baby photos! I took the first one down but then I gave up!

Nursery with a bed

Although I admit to being a chronic over-sharer (that’s why me and social media get along so well) I have felt very private and protective of this little person growing inside me (still totally surreal, by the way!). I didn’t want the world and his wife to know, or to tempt fate. This is pretty much the biggest thing that has ever happened to me so I’m nervous, like all first-time-mums-to-be, I’m sure. I’m also really, really happy and excited!

Yesterday, we had our 19-week morphology scan and bub was looking healthy and perfect (we also found out the gender but as some relatives don’t want to know, I’m not revealing it here!).

As you know, Damian and I have not long returned home from a six-month overseas trip. That was the “before we settle down and have babies” trip. Ha!

I have never taken falling pregnant for granted. Sadly, so many of my friends have struggled to conceive. Why should I be any different? Having a child is a blessing, not a given. That being said, we of course fell pregnant right away, not realising we were flying home to Sydney with an extra passenger on board! And there was I thinking I had THE worst case of jetlag of all time and a weird craving for pretzels…

Less than a week after landing, we found out the good news and then started the longest couple of months of our lives while we kept a big secret from everyone but our nearest and dearest and counted down to the all-important 12 weeks. At this point, we told all our friends but I still wasn’t ready to share it with you guys. There’s tens of thousands of you, that’s huge!

But now I’m finally content to share our happy news and thankfully, I’m also safe to fly to Dubai tonight for what will probably be my last overseas trip for a long time! You’ve lucked out really, because you missed all my whingeing about nausea and extreme tiredness!

What a year I am having! Feeling very blessed indeed.

And yes, of course I’ll share my nursery progress with you! Nothing like a Christmas holiday project…

My two-year anniversary of full-time blogging

Well I’ve made it: a second full year of blogging as a proper job! I’m so delighted! It’s been a particular achievement this year because for half of it, I was out of the country. And for that, thanks must go to my editorial assistant Olivia Shead for being a fantastic righthand woman!

There’s plenty more to thank too: those people who sell my ads, buy my ads, look after the techy stuff that goes right over my head, look after my books and do my graphics. So a big thanks to my advertisers, Emma and the team at HS3, Bloggerati by Nuffnang, David, Chantelle, Janna, and to Kathryn for stepping in as Block correspondent while Olivia and I were both overseas. It may seem like blogging is a solo pursuit, but when it becomes a business, you definitely can’t do it all and I’m really lucky to work with some absolute legends! Thanks also to Mr Francis and my supportive friends and family. Not to mention the many wonderful people in the interiors industry who champion the blog.

And you didn’t think I was going to forget you guys, did you? The readers! Without you reading I’d have none of this. A huge thanks. I am truly grateful.

Here’s to many more years! I’ll be using the Christmas break to work on new features for Interiors Addict and I would really value your input. If you have any feedback or ideas, please comment below. Thanks!

Reminiscing on our first wedding anniversary

Who can resist the urge to reminisce on their first wedding anniversary? I can’t believe quite how fast the last 12 months has gone or how much we have packed in, including half a year gallivanting around Europe and the US. It really has been the most brilliant start to marriage!

_21C4098

If you missed it at the time, you have to check out our wedding video. Of course we are biased, but we think it is incredible and cannot thank The Story of Us enough for giving us the perfect way to remember our big day and share it with friends and family for years to come. We have definitely looked at is so many more times than our photos!

But while we’re at it, here are a few of my favourite photos:

I know we all say it, but it truly was the best day of my life. Pure magic! In some respects, I’d love to do it all again, but in others, I’m happy to keep my perfect memories. It couldn’t have been any better.

But I’m pretty certain the best is yet to come! Thank you, Damian, for the happiest 365 days and here’s to many more.

How I make money blogging: my interview with Secret Bloggers’ Business

It’s the question everyone wants answered, so I thought I’d share an interview on the topic I did with Secret Bloggers’ Business last week. SBB is run by Kate McKibbin, the very successful ex journalist and blogger behind Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily.

Photo by Helen Coetzee, hair and makeup by Jessica Berg

I have nothing to hide and I’d love even more people to be able to make money from blogging so I hope it inspires people. At the end of the day, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication and there are no shortcuts to that. But it can be done! You can learn more from Kate in her respected blogging e-course.

7 Vignettes July 2014 themes

This month, 7 Vignettes starts on my birthday (1 July) so forgive me for the self indulgence, but I’ve made it all about me and I’m the judge! I’m also choosing and giving the prize, which is totally random but (in my opinion) a lovely thing to receive in the mail: a massive box of fresh cherries, myself!

So, here is the list and the reasoning behind what may seem like some pretty random themes (let’s face it, I’m pretty random myself!). I hope you enjoy them! I’ll be away from home for my birthday this year but I’m excited because it happens to fall on Canada Day and we’ll be in Vancouver on the last day of our US and Canada trip. There’ll be fireworks, a great sense of occasion and celebration (those Canadians like a party) and, hopefully, some treats from the husband! LOVE birthdays!

7v

Here’s the thinking behind these Jen themes…

Threes: Because I’m turning 33!

Writing: Because it’s what I do, and have always done, for work.

Lipstick: Have you ever seen a photo of me without it?! If you seriously don’t own a lipstick (why not?!) I will accept any cosmetics-focused entry!

Bathtime and coffee: Because they’re two of my absolute favourite things. If you don’t have a bath, anything bathroom-themed will suffice.

Home: Because I’m totally missing it right now, See you in August, Australia!

Canadian: Because my birthday is on Canada Day.

As usual, the prize is only up for grabs for Australian entrants, but as ever, we welcome participation from all over the world, just for fun! Please feel free to share this graphic with your social networks. Don’t forget to tag me (@interiorsaddict) and use the hashtag #7vignettes. All the details for first timers can be found here.

How I make money and why I won’t apologise for making a job out of blogging

This post has been brewing for some time now. Today’s the day I’ve decided to get it off my chest.

Being a full-time blogger is brilliant. I count myself as seriously lucky to write about what I love every day, to be my own boss, to meet fascinating and really nice people on a regular basis who I wouldn’t come into contact with without being in this position.

The thing is though, I often feel like I have to apologise for my job; that being a blogger isn’t a proper profession. Or that making money from it is somehow wrong or dishonest. I’ll level with you readers, this has started to get my back up! More on this later…

blogging

Since being back in the UK, I’ve had a lot of friends and acquaintances ask me about blogging. For my friends in Sydney, who see me often and have watched Interiors Addict go from hobby Tumblr to full-time, three-posts-per-day, commercially successful online publication, perhaps the idea of me doing this as a job is kind of normal. Sure, it is unusual to be a full-time blogger in most people’s books (including mine!), but my Australian friends don’t seem that stumped by it.

In England however, nobody seems to be able to get their head around it. Which perhaps suggests we are more advanced in the blogging world in Australia? Or perhaps people just haven’t seen me since I’ve been doing this full-time or they’re wondering how I can afford to travel and work part-time for six months (savings and continuing to work while away, incidentally). Maybe all of the above.

Last week, for example, I caught up with an old colleague I hadn’t seen in six years. After our hello hug, about the very first thing he said was : “I have to ask, how do you make money?” It threw me a bit and when I reflected on it later, it made me wonder how many other people are wondering the same and not being so blatant about asking (and also if there shouldn’t have been other, more important things to ask!). So I’ll tell you!

It isn’t rocket science. I sell advertising. Or rather, because I’m not very good at that stuff and would rather concentrate on what I’m good at (being a trained journalist) and enjoy, I have an agency sell my advertising for me, on commission. You’ll see these ads on the blog and in the newsletter. And occasionally I’ll send an email to my database on behalf of an advertiser. I only accept advertising from companies whose products and services I believe to be relevant to my readers.

So, that’s how I make the majority of my money. When you have tens of thousands of readers and are a lean operation with few overheads, it can certainly earn you decent money. I’m actually better off than I’ve ever been.

The only jobs I’ve ever had since leaving school have been in journalism and publishing so I can safely tell you this is how almost all commercial publications make most of their money too: advertising. So for me, the fact my own publication, which just happens to be a blog, makes money this way too, is pretty straightforward. But perhaps for those of you who haven’t worked in media, it isn’t that obvious. So now you know. Cool?

I also publish sponsored posts from advertisers who want to get their message across in words rather than banner ads. I always disclose if they’re sponsored right at the top because I believe you should know a message is paid for and decide if you want to read it anyway. Hiding the fact that a message is paid for until the end, when you’ve already read it without realising as much, doesn’t sit well with me, but some bloggers do it and that’s their call. If it doesn’t say it’s paid for, you can take it as read that I’ve written about something because I like it or think my readers will like it. Simple as that. Transparency is important to me. More on that later too…

So, now I’ve covered how I make money, which seems to be the question everyone wants answered (and don’t get me wrong, I can see why you’d be intrigued and that’s fine by me), I’ll continue with my original point about feeling I have to justify/apologise for being a full-time time blogger and making money from it. Deep breath.

I suppose one of the ‘problems’ with blogging is that many people do it for the love of it or as a hobby and don’t make money, so it’s easy to see why it’s not seen as necessarily commercial, professional or indeed hard work. Many people post every now and again for pure enjoyment and I love that everyone has the freedom to do that on a variety of free platforms. No two blogs are the same and it’s hard to talk about blogs in a general sense. I myself blogged for fun and for the love of it for the first 18 months.

Just because many people blog because they enjoy it doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with making money from it though. If you have a big enough readership that people want to pay for a piece of it, and you do so with integrity and professionalism, good for you! I recently saw a post in a blogger forum asking whether people were blogging for the love of it or money, the suggestion being these things are mutually exclusive. I very much got the impression some people felt it was wrong, or had an impact on their integrity if they dared make some money out of their hobby. I simply don’t agree. And I don’t think people should feel ashamed of making money from something they enjoy. It’s the best thing ever!

Now, I’m probably right at the other end of the spectrum from the hobby bloggers and not your typical example. I’m an ex-journalist turned full-time blogger, working (without doubt) more than full-time on turning this into a sustainable business and doing pretty well at it (I’m constantly learning and trying to improve things though and business owners are almost always working on their next big idea to make theirs bigger and better!). As I mentioned earlier, I trained as a journalist and I’ve always been paid to write and edit and help make publications (print and online) more commercially viable, so I see absolutely no reason why now, when I do this for myself and my own publication, I shouldn’t get paid for it too. Is that very unreasonable?

A good friend of mine told me recently that his brother scoffed when he told him I was working as a full-time blogger these days. Now, nobody ever disrespected what I did for a living when I worked as a journalist for other people or when the publication didn’t fall into the sometimes controversial blog category, so why should that be the case now?

There’s definitely a large group of people who turn their noses up at blogs. My fellow journalists can be the worst for this! So much so, I’ll admit I often skirt around calling Interiors Addict a blog and prefer to say website or online publication. And some would say, what it has evolved into, with three posts a day and being very news-based, isn’t what many would consider a blog anymore (but I like to think the personal touch means it still is).

People definitely have an issue with people making money out of their passion too and a lot of that is an unfortunate trait of human nature, in my personal opinion.

People online can be very opinionated and say things they probaby wouldn’t to your face. A few weeks ago, in reply to one of my advertiser emails, a newsletter subscriber sent me a rather blunt email saying something along the lines of “Are you an advertising medium for “insert advertiser name here” now? How very dull.”

Well, um, actually, yes, I am, there’s nothing covert about it. If I’m to do this for my job I need to get paid for it and that’s how it works. Is it really that awful of me?

There was a time I did this for the love of it only, on top of a full-time job and it was really really hard work. With what was akin to two full-time jobs, a relationship, family and friends to divide my attention between, something had to give. Luckily for me (in hindsight), I was retrenched from my job and managed to turn blogging into a job, and I can tell you very confidently that the blog is a LOT better these days as a result. I also know my readers really enjoy and appreciate my blog and I doubt many of them have an issue with me being paid for providing them with a resource they love and find useful.

Last month, I received a lovely email from a reader in response to my third blog-birthday post, saying she got the impression I felt bad about making money from blogging (I hadn’t said as much or thought I was saying as much, but it obviously came across). She said: “As a reader I’m happy that you make money. It doesn’t cost me anything and it makes me feel like I am able to give you something back as you give me so much with the fantastic content you provide to me for free. Also I trust you and I know that you are not going to recommend something just to make a small commission.” That’s what it’s all about, eh?

I work hard (I’m no martyr, I love what I do and I get paid for it), I have high standards, I try my best to provide a great resource and I try to do so  with transparency, professionalism and integrity. I don’t think I should feel bad about it, and you know what, I don’t, but it’s a constant battle! I’ve decided it ends now. No more feeling ashamed or dirty about being paid for my hard work and many hours of it. There are much bigger things to worry about in the world!

I hope this post will change a few people’s perceptions of blogs, or just give a little insight into how it all works! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic!

Follow your passions. Follow eBay Collections

Brought to you by Nuffnang and eBay

Online shopping gets more advanced and more enjoyable by the month, and it’s become as normal to window shop or browse online as it has on the high street. I think that’s why anything that enhances and personalises the web shopping experience is a great thing. The new eBay Collections concept is a great way to get you inspired, by sharing other people’s curated collections of things they love, with you.

I don’t know about you but I love the shopping sections of magazines and blogs to give me ideas of what might go together or what to buy to represent the latest trend in my home or wardrobe. It’s like someone doing the hard work you and serving you up their handpicked items on a plate. It saves me trawling through pages and pages, and certainly when it comes to eBay, despite the numerous filtering options, there’s so much for sale there, it can sometimes be an overwhelming task. Now eBay Collections presents you with things you might love by people whose taste or style you love or trust. They’re like moodboards (and us interiors folk do love a good moodboard!) but shoppable. See something you like? Click and buy. Simple!

I was delighted to be asked to play a part in the launch by sharing what I’m passionate about – homewares and making your home happy and beautiful – with eBay members. It was fun putting together my five Collections; like shopping without spending any money (although it is, of course, always tempting!). I spent hours browsing homewares, cushions (of course!) and items grouped by trends and colours (yes, navy!). I hope you’ll love what I’ve picked.

You can make your own too, to share with others, enabling you to bring your own passions to life. You might be planning a new bedroom and want to collect together all the items you find for it on eBay in one place. Or simply follow people (your favourite sellers, influencers, bloggers or the eBay Curation team) to find out every time they post their favourite finds. Check out the Featured Collections page for ideas.

You can even get paid to build Collections. Sign up here.
