Karina Jambrak’s new linen collection inspired by Australian winter

Drawing is second nature to Sydney-based designer and artist Karina Jambrak. She first started selling the art she created as a high school student in 2001, at the famous Bondi Beach Markets.

Her career as an independent artist began in 2018, when she was made redundant from her dream job as a graphic designer, right after her husband had undergone open heart surgery. Needing to provide for her family, she decided to turn her passion into a full-time career and start her own small business.

Karina’s art is hand-drawn using copic markers, and predominantly uses soft, pastel colour palette. She draws inspiration from Australian landscapes and flora, as well as other parts of the world.

After the success of the first range, Karina has collaborated with Adairs to release a new range of homewares. The collection evokes imagery of dusky, winter foliage, and is sure to lend a sense of serenity to the rooms in which they are placed.

“I want everyone to see the beauty that the winter can bring to the Australian landscape, and how we can bring that beauty into our indoor spaces,” Karina explains, speaking of her inspiration for the collection.

The pastel-hued designs are printed on an array of items, including organic cotton linen, dinner and serving ware, towels, and décor items.

“I am so excited that Adairs asked me to design a second range for them after the success of the first,” Karina says. “Seeing my work come to life on everyday items has been such a dream and I am so proud with how this second collection came out.”

Karina has also designed a playful, jungle inspired collection for Adairs Kids. It features tangerine tones that are sure to ignite the imagination. Delightful hand-drawn images embellish the items, with fun African animals parading amongst greenery similar to that of the main collection.

This cosy bedroom transformation is the perfect inspiration for winter

Warm, grounded colours that speak of security and comfort are set to dominate winter decorating trends, according to Dulux forecasters.

“There’s a collective yearning for reassurance and a return to simpler times,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager. “We want our homes to provide comfort, a sense of safety and to remind us of better days ahead. And this will be reflected in more than just colour in 2021 – expect to see a rise in plush, comfy seating, handcrafted furniture with an artisanal feel and a greater focus on ‘purposeful decorating’ rather than just decorating to make an aesthetic statement.”

The Retreat palette – one of three trend colour palettes identified in the 2021 Dulux Colour Forecast – captures the mood of this coming winter.

“These earthy tones and muted colours are all drawn from nature – think oceanic blues, nourishing greens, soft greys and touches of mustard,” Andrea explains. “They bring the outside in – ideal for a time when most of us are stuck indoors for long stretches – and plug into the growing movement for wellness in design.”

To give you ideas on how you can use these comforting hues in your own home, Dulux worked with stylist Bree Leech to re-energise a child’s bedroom using colours from the Retreat palette.

“You want your child to love spending time in their room – it should be somewhere they can escape, relax, read and play. The quickest and easiest way to switch up the mood is with colour,” Bree says.

Bree kept the big-ticket items in the room – the bed, bedhead and solid timber bedside table, and focused on updating the room with bold colour. She chose shades that worked with the neutral tones in the foundation pieces, adding plenty of textures to dial up the cosiness. She started by adding deep blue to the walls and a gentle neutral to the ceiling and window detailing.

“We opted for pale greige rather than a classic white for the ceiling and windows to soften the contrast with the blue. A sharp colour contrast can be very effective in a space, but in a room that’s all about relaxation, you want it to be a little less pronounced,” she explains.

“Inky blue works well here – it’s cosy and timeless and sits beautifully alongside the natural materials in the room, such as the timber and woven-rattan,” adds Bree. “A woven wall hanging adds accents of rust and quirky bedside lighting creates a playful mood, adding contrast against the deep blue.”

Artwork: “Fast Forward” by Liam Snootle

“To make the space feel more inviting, I layered the bed with cosy cushions and snuggly, fringed woollen blankets. Curvy furniture is a great addition to break the architectural angles in the room to make it feel more relaxed,” she says.

Bree created a place to read in a sunny spot by the window, complete with a velvet-upholstered armchair and a pair of side tables, perfect for keeping a book or two nearby. “Don’t be afraid to bring in pieces from another room, like this armchair, so long as they serve a purpose and fit with your colour palette,” she says.

Artwork (top): “Long Doggie Print” by Rachel Castle

“If you’ve been all about white for as long as you can remember, get a taste of using stronger colours by starting with a single wall – say the wall behind the bed,” says Andrea. “This can also stretch your new confidence into using colour elsewhere in your home.”

If you’re inspired by this amazing bedroom transformation, Bree has provided some tips for redecorating your child’s bedroom.

Bree’s kids’ bedroom styling tips

Invest in quality: Kids are tough on furniture, so it’s worth paying more for well-made pieces that will last. You can save money on smaller items, such as bedlinen, art prints and rugs.

Add an upholstered bedhead: It makes for a comfortable spot to sit up and read.

Size it right: As a guide, when choosing a rug for a child’s bedroom it should fit two thirds under the bed and extend at least 30cm beyond the sides of the bed – any smaller and it will look lost in the space.

Think multi-purpose: Children’s rooms are often small, so seek out flexible pieces that can be used in different ways, such as an ottoman that doubles as storage and seating.

Make storage easy: Add in baskets for toys and cupboards or shelves to hide mess away.

Wall paint: Dulux Winter Sea, Vintage Linen, and Five Fingers Peninusla.

Bedrooms Decorating 101 Expert Tips Furniture Renting

These landlord approved hacks are perfect for style minded renters

When renting, your options to personalise your space are limited. You don’t have to paint your walls or remodel the kitchen to have a space that reflects your unique style, however. Genevieve Rosen-Biller has provided her expert tips to make your rental your own.

Swap out blinds and curtains

If you’re renting, it’s almost a given the window treatments will be a little dated. The good news is that these can usually be swapped out easily and inexpensively. Hanging some fresh curtains in a neutral shade will quickly update the room and give it a whole new look. Just hang onto the old ones so you can put them back up again when you move out. (And take your new ones with you!)

Invest in beautiful bedding

Quality bed linen is a near effortless way to elevate a bedroom. This room should feel like a sanctuary and choosing pure bedding that is comfortable, breathable and luxurious will ensure you always sleep well. The enticing texture and broad colour range makes linen sheets a popular choice. Style in single tones or mix and match for a simple yet chic look.

Introduce plants

Leafy pot plants liven up and bring energy to any space, while keeping you feeling connected to the natural world. A big towering plant like a fiddle leaf fig in a bare corner, or trailing vines like devil’s ivy cascading down a shelf are instant statement maker. As a bonus, they will purify the air.

Add artworks

Art is a sure-fire way to add colour and personality to a place, and an art collection is something you can build on over time and take wherever you go. Most landlords will grant permission to add some hooks to blank walls so you can hang your favourite pieces. If this isn’t an option, lean oversized artworks against the walls on the floor and line up smaller pieces along cabinets, mantels and bookshelves.

Photography: Chloe Lambert; Art: Anna Price

Let there be light

Lighting can make a huge difference to the ambience and style. If natural light is lacking, bring in some floor and table lamps placed carefully around. Light fixtures that are daggy or clash with your chosen décor can easily be replaced with something more modern. As with the window treatments, just remember to stash the old ones somewhere safe for when you leave.

Photography: Sally Goodall

Cover the floor

A non-permanent solution to ugly patterned tiles, stained carpet or weathered floorboards is to layer rugs over the top. The larger the better, in colours and textures that give the room a new look while covering up all manner of sins at the same time.

House tour: A Sydney interior designer’s breezy renovation

Architecturally designed and built in 1972, this Sydney riverside home is located in the leafy Sydney suburb of Riverview. It’s home to interior designer Dani Bartholomeusz who has renovated it with a light, bright and breezy touch. “The design style had to be contemporary, with clean lines and lots of storage to hide away all the usual family clutter while retaining a warm, welcoming and not-too-serious family home,” says Dani.

Open plan living
Open plan kitchen, living and dining

Having lived in the home since 2014, Dani has been slowly renovating it ever since. “Although the house has some funky 70’s features, it meshes perfectly with a contemporary aesthetic. There’s lots of clean lines, diagonals, full-height windows and lots of bright light,” says Dani who drew on a largely monochrome palette broken up with pops of wood and lush greenery. The walls are painted in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, the trims in Dulux Vivid White and the timber flooring is Japanese black.

Kitchen
Kitchen

The kitchen features American oak veneer and white joinery with concealed Smeg appliances and a Sirius pop-up extractor. The kitchen bar stools are from Design Nation while the pendant light above is the ‘Coral’ by David Trubridge.

Sitting room
The sitting room is home to a thriving fiddle-leaf fig

The designer lives in the home with her husband Clynton, her seven-year-old daughter Ivy, two adult step kids Aidan and Casey and a pair of budgerigars called Brian and Barry. “The main objective when decorating this house was to make the river and natural setting the star of the show. All of the decor had to complement it as it can be seen from almost every room in the home,” says Dani.

Dani’s commitment to the view extends to the outdoor setting which she picked up for a bargain price. “The outdoor balcony setting had to be almost see-through, so as not to obscure the view. I happened across these black rope outdoor Aruba chairs from Flower Power for $79 each!” says Dani.

The home backs onto the river
Teenage retreat
Dani created a sophisticated teenage retreat for one of her stepchildren.

Having just returned to the interior design scene after years spent raising her daughter, Dani certainly flexed her design muscle when creating this home. “I feel that I nailed the brief! The view is still breathtaking and is the focal point from almost every place in the house.  The decor is interesting and beautiful in its own right, without taking away any of the wow-factor of the location.”

Melbourne terrace renovation shows monochrome need not be boring

Proving that a monochrome scheme needn’t be boring, layers of white on white create a tranquil, stylish feel in this new Melbourne terrace renovation by Pierce Widera. Located in Fitroy, the mid-Victorian terrace house had already undergone two major renovations in its lifetime but none more beautifully restrained, or functional, than this one.

Lounge room
Lounge room

The home’s first reno saw a kitchen, dining, bathroom and first-floor bedroom added while the second attempt added another bedroom upstairs. “But this was done without resolving a properly flowing floorplan. The first imperative was to focus on improving the floorplan to increase the functionality of the spaces,” says Pierce Widera designer and co-founder Amy Pierce.

Bathroom
Bathroom

While the heart of the heart of the home, the home’s former kitchen was a dark space so increasing the penetration of light was key. To do this, the kitchen splashback window was extended, and an additional vertical sliding window was added to bring the outside in.

Kitchen
A glass splash back lets light permeate the kitchen
Kitchen
The kitchen melds simple white joinery with pale timber

“The kitchen is light and bright, seamlessly flowing into the dining area, providing ample storage and hiding a functional laundry behind a hidden door. The high ceiling adds a sense of grandeur to the space, accentuated further by the two new pendants above the kitchen island and dining table,” says co-founder and designer Nat Widera.

Dining room
The dining room features beautiful custom cabinetry perfect for display

There is a nod to mid-century modern design in the home’s general materiality but also with the owners’ furniture and artworks. The minimal master bedroom is a study in white – simple white joinery is accented by minimal white handles and complementary paint. Full height wardrobes wrap around an existing fireplace flue and act as the entrance into the ensuite bathroom also.

Luxurious and functional, the bathrooms are a highlight, and they feature a rich terrazzo floor, soft grey wall tiles and fresh white stone and timber for the vanity units. “The project outcome is both respectful to the heritage of the house and the needs of its inhabitants.”

How to pick the best duvet: your quilt questions answered

I recently decided it was time to invest in a quality quilt; a really warm, heavy-feeling, hotel-like one that would look all plump on the bed. I don’t ask much, do I?! But I didn’t know where to start. And while I thought I probably wanted a feather duvet (that’s what we call them in the UK and the term doona used in Australia is actually trademarked by Tontine, don’t you know?), I wasn’t sure if they were cruelty-free.

A winter weight wool quilt

I thought if I had all these questions, you might have too! So I asked the folks at Onkaparinga, one of Australia’s oldest textile brands, to give us the lowdown on loft, fill options and certifications. Not sure what I’m talking about? Read on…

What are the main quilt fill options and which is best for which reason/season?

The main fills available are:

  • Down and feather – this can be great all year round depending on the percentage of down vs feather. For example, 85% down and 15% feather will be very warm and more suited to winter sleeping whereas 50% down 50% feather would be suited to all seasons or warmer sleepers all year.

Down is the super soft and warm under-feather material sourced from ducks or geese. When the quilt is referred to as ‘down and feather’ it has a higher down count (more expensive and warmer), when mentioned as ‘feather and down’ it has a higher feather count (a cheaper alternative suited to all seasons/less warm).

  • Wool – this can be sourced from all over the world, although Australian wool is seen as the premium wool worldwide (we only use this). Wool is naturally temperature regulating and breathable, allowing for the materials to lock in warmth while allowing your skin to breathe. Higher wool GSM means a warmer quilt, for example 450-500gsm is perfect for winter or colder sleepers, 300gsm is suited to all seasons or warmer sleepers. Due to the temperature regulating properties both are suited to all year depending on the sleeper. Look for washable wool for a longer lasting quilt.
  • Cotton – for the warmer sleeper or those hot balmy nights, it feels light on and doesn’t have much bulk to it. It’s a very thin looking quilt that will not give that plump look. Those that like a good looking bed too may want to add another quilt for decorative purposes but sleep just under the cotton quilt!
  • Polyester is a cheaper alternative for quilts and is often found in quilts for commercial purposes or budget friendly quilts. Polyester quilts may give a plump look depending on the type and can be favoured by allergy sufferers as they can be washed frequently at higher temperatures. They are less breathable due to the synthetic fibres so are not recommended for hot sleepers. Being polyester, they are not made from natural fibres which can put some people off due to environmental factors and synthetics being close to skin for long lengths of time.
A washable wool quilt is a good option for allergy sufferers

Is there one quilt that will work all year round or is it essential to have a summer and winter weight option?

Many quilts are suitable all year round depending on your sleep type. If you are an extremely cold person you may need to invest in a good winter quilt as well as hot sleepers, a summer weight (cotton) quilt. For those sleeping with heating and cooling in homes or average temperature sleepers, a good quality quilt made from natural fibres will be suitable for all year round.

Looking after your quilt, airing it regularly and shaking to help with loft, will keep your quilt fresh and looking great all year.

A quality doona is a few hundred dollars. Why is it worth it?

Investing in a good quality quilt will give you a quilt that will last for years if well looked after. A premium quilt will generally be made with higher quality and more natural fibres that are proven to give a great night’s sleep and last longer.

Are there any considerations for people with allergies or asthma?

We find that natural fibres generally give less chance of allergies or asthma with wool being one recommended for allergy sufferers. With no chemical substances to irritate, wool is generally suited to allergy sufferers. It is important to regularly air your quilts and clean them according to instructions to keep dust (and allergens) to a minimum.

Can you explain some of the jargon please?!

  • Loft is the height of the quilt – so when the quilt naturally falls on the bed, how pillowy/high it looks and feels.
  • Baffle Box or Box Construction is the term used to describe how the quilt is built.  The ‘box’ is like a pocket that is filled with the fill material and closed off so that your quilt is made from ‘boxes’ holding the fill in place, preventing too much movement of the fill that can result in uneven warmth.

Are there any certifications we should look out for? Many people worry down-filled quilts involve cruelty to birds?

Oeko-Tex is important to check when considering allergies and an aversion to any harmful substances as it means the manufacturer and product has been checked and the product is free from any nasties!

If you are looking for a down and feather quilt we do believe it is important to ensure they are RDS (The Responsible Down Standard) certified. RDS certification ensures the materials were sourced from suppliers that have treated the geese and ducks involved well. They are able to express innate behaviors and live pain and distress free. To become RDS certified the entire process from farm to manufacturer has been certified by auditors and inspectors from a third-party certifier. Any RDS certified down and feathers are clearly marked during the manufacturing process to ensure no non-certified products are mistakenly used.

Ensure your down and feather quilt is cruelty free by checking for RDS certification

What’s the most popular quilt you sell?

Our most popular is our Australian Washable Wool, Winter Weight Quilt. Filled with washable Australian wool this quilt is perfect for cooler nights.

I’ll let you know how I get on with choosing mine!

Autumn bed linen trends: Our favourite new bedding

With temperatures starting to drop, we’re rather excited about the potential for bedroom restyling – out with summer’s light fabrics and colours and in with a much more autumnal vibe. With key colours including tobacco, navy, lilac and sage, this year’s autumn/winter looks are all about sumptuous texture.

L&M Home: Released recently, the brand’s new Massimo collection won’t win many awards for pushing the envelope but boy is it luxe. Comprised of soft cotton quilted in a linear design, this design would suit just about any interior style. Pair it with tobacco toned velvet cushions for a crisp autumn look.

Castle and Things: Rachel Castle’s latest collection features more of her iconic spots and stripes but this time with an autumn/winter colour update.

“We wanted our new autumn/winter range to squeal ‘snuggle’ factor, warmth with a twist and grown up but cosy. So, we’ve got little buttery spots and big cloudy stripes with the cosiest new butterscotch floral. This season tells our signature story – strictly edited modern classics with a cheeky little wink,” says Rachel Castle.

Aura Home: Available in navy and caramel, Aura’s new Maya chenille quilt cover draws inspiration from the old and the new. Made from 100 per cent pure cotton for, we love its textural, bohemian vibe.

Kip & Co: Titled ‘Magic Happens,’ the autumn Kip & Co. collection has plenty for the maximalists and for those who favour a more subdued aesthetic. And while there are myriad florals, texture abounds with cotton velvet, French linen, soft cotton, chunky blanket knits, and waffle fabrics rounding out the range.

Kip & Co.

Linen House: Constructed from fine cotton voile, and trimmed with frayed rustic edges, the new Elysian bedding from Linen House gets our tick of approval. We’re particularly fond of the on-trend orchid/lilac and eucalyptus colour ways.

The brand’s new Della design is much bolder – a hand-painted, gestural leaf design features in 1970’s inspired hues.

Kip & Co.’s new autumn collection is big on texture

While there’s plenty for maximalists in the new Kip & Co. range ‘Magic Happens,’ the collection is brimming with options for those who favour a more subdued aesthetic. The brand’s autumn collection has a focus on incorporating chunky texture into the home and not just the bold pattern we’ve come to expect from the brand.

Kip & Co
Kip & Co.’s signature velvet and linen bedding is back in several fabulous new colour ways

“With tactile fabrics like cotton velvet, French linen, soft cotton, chunky blanket knits, and waffle, the range is a reminder of the importance of touch, and the beauty in slowing things down,” says Kip & Co co-founder Alex McCabe.

This large scale graphic check would look great on a child or adult’s bed

The new collection features pretty new velvet and linen shades (hello nude!) as well as some seriously gorgeous chunky knit throws that look both stylish and snuggly. Other standout pieces (that would look equally at home on the couch or the bed) include the gorgeous harlequin print ‘Iced Vovo’ throw as well as new shades of the brand’s signature tassel throws.

Kip & Co chunky knit throw
The ‘Honey Rhubarb’ chunky knit throw is a standout piece in the range
Kip & Co
The new ‘Iced Vovo’ throw, velvet Monstera cushion in shrimp and classic linen in ‘Laurel Green’ are rather delicious too.

“You can include colour and texture – it doesn’t have to be all about the print. Sometimes it’s about adding a textural element without going the full maximalist hog,” says Kip & Co. marketing coordinator Amy Clarke who suggests starting with a plain linen or velvet and building the look from there.

Kip & Co

“The collection is an ode to those moments of magic amidst the mayhem – the wonder of a rainbow, the twinkle of the stars, the laughter of your best friend. We shot in an incredibly romantic old hotel, and if the walls could talk, they would’ve whispered stories of a simpler time,” says Alex.

Kip & Co
The beautiful kids’ ‘Speckle Candy’ print could almost pass as a neutral and would layer up nicely too.
Kip & Co
The new cushion line-up includes striped velvets and a new bolster shape. We love the new large pink check bed linen too.

The latest tableware range features cutlery, table cloths, aprons and napkins in a fabulous array of new prints designed to make staying home a bit more joyful. “In the kitchen, we’re embracing the golden era of dining in. Our beautiful tableware and cutlery collection celebrates the joy of a home cooked meal, with a feeling of festivity and fun,” says Alex.

Kip & Co
The ‘Pollen’ linen table cloth and napkin are styled with jewel napkin rings from the range.

Favourite collection prints have been turned into apparel – there’s leggings, tees, sweaters and a series of absolutely stunning cardigans. “We are so excited to intro our new hero – the big knitted cardigan is a must-have wardrobe essential,” says Alex.

Kip & Co cardigan
What a stunning cardigan!

Maximalists never fear though, you are very much catered for. From whimsical florals and foliage, to a fabulous Greek God inspired print, there’s plenty to feast your eyes on.

Art Deco renovation the perfect blend of old and new for family living

When a builder builds their dream home, it’s always interesting to take a peek inside. Nestled within trees in a picturesque part of Wollongong, this home was originally built in 1956 but was recently renovated and extended by its owners Dane and Zoe Cartwright of the Illawarra construction group, Projection Build. Drawing on the home’s original Art Deco curves, Sherson Architecture is responsible for the redesign while Lee Talbot of Maven Home worked on the understated yet luxurious interiors.

“We wanted to celebrate the curved brick façade and curved balcony that were features of the existing Art Deco home,” says Zoe Cartwright of the five bedroom, five bathroom home that she shares with her husband and three young boys.

Soft, curved archways and internal windows abound – all designed to allow natural light to flow throughout. Art Deco inspired curvature features in other ways too – there’s plenty of rounded corners including the custom Vigo Lena marble kitchen island bench and the nearby handmade timber dining table.

The lounge room is another tranquil space that features a custom designed pink lounge with fluted detailing. “Our interior designer Lee designed it and we worked with Heartwood and Upholstery Stitches to bring it to life,” says Zoe. A Sarah Ellison coffee table, two mustard Jardan occasional chairs and a Bam Bam rug complete the room.

Nearby in the library, fluted Carrara marble was used to restore the original fireplace turning it into an eye-catching statement piece. “A focal point of the space, the Vigo Lena marble curved floor slab and mantelpiece by Artedomus is highlighted by the natural light in the space,” says Zoe.

When it comes to the colour and materials palette, Zoe was inspired by boutique hotel and resort looks – particularly Brisbane’s Calile Hotel and Rae’s on Wategos in Byron Bay. “Our family loves Byron Bay for its coastal vibes and Rae’s became a big inspiration for the organic tones, white curves and natural looking arches,” says Zoe.

The home’s mostly muted colour palette features pops of dusty pink, eucalyptus and sea foam green, most notably in the wet areas. Sourced locally from Wollongong suppliers Inigo Jones & Co. and Vulcano Design, ‘Moroccan Bejmat’ hand crafted tiles are paired with honed terrazzo on the floors.

“It’s my dream home. We always have visitors and we love entertaining. There are so many areas to discover and relax in – it feels like our own secluded resort. The master retreat feels like a hotel room or day spa. Overlooking Wollongong, the views are spectacular, especially at night with all of the lights. It’s heaven!”

Peak air con season and a new Samsung model for a better sleep

While it felt like Sydney had forgotten it was summer over the Christmas holidays, it’s now definitely hot again and those without air con would be feeling it! We’ve been lucky enough to be road testing the latest model from Samsung in our master bedroom and to say it is giving us a better night’s sleep would be an understatement. Seriously!

The Samsung GEO Wind-Free in our bedroom

Samsung released two new air conditioner models at the end of last year, the GEO AR5500 and award-winning GEO Wind-Free AR9500. Packed with intuitive features and smart innovations, the new range includes air filtration, dehumidification functions and in-built Wi-Fi features that make it ideal all year-round. Healthy air is a new concern (obsession!) for me in our home, but more on that later.

Designed to enhance your comfort levels, Samsung’s innovative Wind-Free system disperses air gently and quietly through 23,000 micro air holes, leaving no unpleasant feeling of cold wind on your skin. We’re really noticing and enjoying this at night. There’s no need to hide under the covers to escape a too-icy blast of air!

“The Wind-Free Air Conditioner range from Samsung is a breakthrough for our portfolio of air solutions that have been selected and calibrated to help make Australian homes more comfortable through our chilly winters and hot summers,” says Mike Lilly, head of Product and Operations Air Conditioning, Samsung Electronics Australia.

“With our new wind-free technology, people will barely even notice air movement in the room as it is cooled by these air conditioner units. Once the desired temperature is reached, the system disperses fresh air uniformly without the unpleasant blast of wind. With a focus on clean air and smart, efficient technologies, these air conditioners are perfectly suited for the Australian climate.”

Ideal for all types of households, the latest Samsung air conditioners consist of a large fan unit; large air intake area and a wide blade to help disperse conditioned air throughout the room. They take the guesswork out of settings and adjusts themselves according to room conditions, outside temperature and previous usage patterns with the inclusion of the AI Auto Cooling feature. This innovative feature learns how you use your unit and customises the setting to suit. Now that’s what we call smart home technology!

The Wind-Free AR9500’s Good Sleep mode automatically adjusts the air flow direction and fan speed at a pre-set temperature and an operating time the user controls. Perfect for those hot humid nights, Dry Mode helps remove high humidity from the room and the Wind-Free™ model also uses a Humidity Sensor which accurately measures the humidity.

The range also features Digital Inverter Boost technology which is designed to maintain the desired temperature with less fluctuation and reduce energy consumption by up to 73%. It also uses strong magnets made of Neodymium and includes a twin-tube muffler to minimise noise and vibration.

Our master bedroom definitely hasn’t been the healthiest air space in our home and it’s long been on our reno list to improve this. Our window is so old it doesn’t open, so that will be being replaced this year! Throughout winter it was sometimes so cold in there, our windows were running with condensation and we had to use a dehumidifier (next winter we’ll have a warmer room and our air con’s built-in dehumidifier to help this).

The Wind-Free™ AR9500 model also boasts two Tri-Care filters which help keep the air you breathe hygienic, maintain the performance of the unit and can collect up to 98.8% of inactivate bacteria. Music to my ears!

We are so happy to have a much more comfortable and healthy master bedroom space, not to mention we sometimes have four-in-a-bed due to our boys’ nighttime antics!

Kids’ teepees: more than just bedroom decor

Sure, a beautiful kids’ teepee looks great in a bedroom or playroom, but if you want to avoid your latest purchase getting left in the corner after the first few weeks, Cattywumpus (who make some beautiful Australian ones!) share these seven ways to get the most use out of your investment.

1. Imaginative play

A teepee offers a safe cocoon for children to retreat to as they engage in pretend play and comfortably build confidence in their own space and at their own pace.

2. Reading nook

Grab your favourite books or go off script with your clever human in this private space where anything at all can happen in storyland. Decorate the interior with fluffy pillows, fairy lights, buntings or blooms and make this space your nightly ritual of calm or the perfect space where kids can learn to read.

3. Naptime

Doze off and wander into dreamland in your spacious sanctuary that makes nap time a dream.

4. Staycations

When the going gets tough, we go into the teepee! Summer getaways aren’t always feasible but teepees can provide the perfect sleepover or slumber party spot. Take it out to the backyard for a ‘camping’ getaway or deck it out with beach buckets and spades for a beach day!

5. Hideaway

Sometimes, we have to do the tough job of teaching little ones that their behavior can impact others. The teepee provides a safe hideaway that works to replace the ‘naughty corner’ so children have the me time and space to calm their temper, consider their behaviour and reflect on how their actions may have affected others.

6. Shaded outdoor play area

There’s no limit to play so let’s take the good times outdoors with Cattywampus teepees! Perfect for providing shade for little ones, this designated kid’s area will ensure parents can keep an eye on them in the safety of their backyard as they enjoy outdoor play.

7. Meditation

Make this a sacred space for your contemplative one to connect, write, read or meditate. Add some cushions, bolsters and blankets and you’ll have them saying, “nama-stay.”

Eadie Lifestyle latest a calm antidote in uncertain times

Launched in 2016, Eadie Lifestyle has become a mainstay of the Australian soft furnishing scene. Designed by a small in-house creative team, headed up by founder Trudie Cox, the company has never been too focussed on trends and instead delivers quality, timeless and enduring pieces that people can enjoy for years. The brand’s new collection, Grace, is testament to this.

The Grace collection

Calm, comfortable, soothing and elegant, the range is a lovely antidote to the uncertainty of modern times.  “Grace is a collection born from a desire to stay authentic to our roots – timeless classic design, creating our own trends and not following others, and celebrating the subtleties of quality and detail,” says Trudie Cox.

With the business turning six this year, it gave Trudie the perfect opportunity to take stock and reevaluate where it was headed. “The last several months have brought much change around the globe. For many of us, myself included, it’s been a time of reflection, prioritising the important things and learning to savour a simplified lifestyle,” says Trudie. It’s a sentiment that runs through the tranquil collection.

The range boasts more than a passing nod to the ocean – ‘Sea Foam,’ ‘Low Tide’ and ‘Rockpool’ are just a couple of the series within. And while they are a great complement to coastal homes, the ranges would suit most interior schemes. The crowd-pleasing colour palette includes crisp white, neutrals, earthy pinks, soft greys and peaceful blues.

As for standout pieces, Trudie is most taken with the ‘Sea Foam’ series. Made from linen and cotton, the ‘Sea Foam’ fabric is fully reversible and has a fluted and flowing texture that has a fabulous drape.

“My other favourite is the extended Bedouin Linen Series which is made on traditional hand looms and has an interesting, luxurious texture,” says Trudie. This series has just been produced in ivory and there’s new cushion sizes (including an oversized lumbar), throws and linen bed covers within it too.

To celebrate the arrival of the collection, Trudie partnered with UK-based photographer Astrid Harrison who has a particular interest in horses and has captured some of the world’s rarest breeds; a couple of which feature in the campaign imagery and are available to buy.

Astrid Harrison’s equine photography features in the collection

“I am excited to say that Astrid has released these prints in limited edition to our Eadie community, for purchase. Each print will be numbered and embossed with Astrid’s logo. Astrid’s sought-after art has graced galleries throughout Europe, the USA and the Middle East, so we are very excited to be able to offer these beautiful works to our tribe.”

The Block 2020 upstairs room reveals

Everyone approached their spaces slightly differently on The Block this week but all but one had a home office alongside their bedroom. And nobody can argue how important they’ve become! Finally, Sarah and George got their first win (hooray!) and it was last place for former favourites Jimmy and Tam.

Let’s recap!

Harry and Tash | 28/30 | Second place

The judges loved the home office and how it reflected nature outside and thought it showed great restraint. The paintwork was heavily criticised, but that was all.

Into the bedroom itself and Shaynna said it was stunning. Darren said the corner must have been really hard to work with but that they’d managed to make it a great feature. “It’s a really good, private, useful adult space.”

Neale said demonstrating multi-use was really important from a real estate perspective. Shaynna said: “This house can grow into whatever the family wants to throw at it.”

Darren and Neale loved the sheer curtains too. “We feel the joy and brightness and life that’s in this house. Harry and Tash have hit their stride.” Shaynna said paintwork aside, the room was flawless and they were peaking at the right time!

Sarah and George | 28.5/30 | Winners!

Sarah and George finally got a win for their upstairs rooms that included a work from home space, a powder room and a kids room.

Shaynna loved how spacious and bright the hallway was. She thought their last study was claustrophobic but liked this one much better. Neale loved how it had been styled. Darren said the attention to detail in the finishes was great.

Into the powder room. Darren said the matching floor and wall tiles were impactful in a small room. Neale loved the little black sink but thinks they could have had more fun with the room, and created more contrast.

Into the kid’s room and that’s where they got really excited! Darren wanted to be a little kid again! “When you’re going to do a kid’s room, go all the way,” Shaynna said.

Neale thought it was very clever because although it was beautifully styled as a kid’s room, it could easily become something else. “Everything they’ve chosen is so right. It creates a wonderful sense of whimsy and emotion. There’s something very childlike about the mural but it could also work for an older child or an adult.”

“This whole level works,” says Shaynna.

Daniel and Jade | 27.5/30 | Third place

The South Australian farmers had a different space upstairs to everyone else; as well as a third bedroom, they had a secret attic that can be used for storage.

Shaynna loved how large the study/rumpus room was. Darren loved the multipurpose room. Neale said it was a very thoughtful design.

But Shaynna felt the styling wasn’t quite right and the couch was a little too stiff. Neale said it didn’t have the emotional pull of the previous two rooms but buyers would see it as a real value add.

The judges all loved that there were five bedrooms in the main part of this house. “There’s no doubt this adds massive value,” Neale said. Shaynna loved the wardrobes. Neale said it was a useful room for a guest or you could use it as an entire floor for the kids.

Then they found the secret attic! The judges said they’d got the most out of every spare inch of their home.

Luke and Jasmin | 26/30 | Fourth place

Darren said the big hallway was a real bonus. They loved the barn door and hardware but hated how it was mounted and thought it needed a brass handle too. Once inside though, there was a lot to like! Shaynna said the styling was superb. Neale said there was a feeling of luxury and elegance. Darren liked how the room was an office/TV room and much more conducive to watching TV than in the last house with its big comfy modular.

They said it felt modern and coastal and right on the money. Shaynna thought it was a shame they hadn’t used plantation shutters. And then Darren noted the bottom drawer didn’t open properly. But overall they were impressed.

The hallway paintwork needed a lot of attention. But once into the bedroom, they were happy again. Neale loved the green VJ wall and the rattan bedhead. Darren loved the lights on the VJ. Shaynna thought the bed could have been styled better and wondered why they didn’t choose brass handles for the wardrobes.

“The standard this year is so high that we are nothing the imperfections,” Neale said. Darren felt the rooms had great emotional appeal.

Picks to buy: Brass clam shell | LED wall lights | Barn door hardware

Jimmy and Tam  | 25.5/30 | Last place

The judges loved the “epic” pocket door. They loved the little TV space although the TV was way too high for the sofa. Neale thought not having an office even suggested was a mistake.

Darren did love the joinery, the sofa and the colour palette. Neale said it wasn’t really tugging at his heart strings. And Shaynna said smart spending was starting to look a bit stingy!

The bedroom though was a success. Shaynna said it had a sense of luxury. Darren said it was gorgeous and he loved the materials palette.

Neale hated the dried floral arrangement and said it was “funereal in its ugliness”. He admitted though that the colour palette was gorgeous. “They’ve made brown look beautiful, they’ve made brown sing.”

Lastly Neale said if they weren’t planning a study in their studio apartment they had made a big mistake and that they had to have one.

Kip & Co. Spring Summer 2020 range inspired by vacationing at home!

While Kip & Co.’s latest Spring/Summer collection ‘Vacay’ was designed last summer, its inspiration has since proved rather prescient. In an eery twist, it was centred around the idea of holidaying at home. “Little did we know how literal that inspiration would become!” says co-founder Alex McCabe who is based on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

“When home is your whole world, we want it to be the most beautiful world possible. This range is a reminder that just because you can’t go away, doesn’t mean you can’t vacay,” says Alex of the fun new range that features lots of gorgeous green and lavender tones.

And just like every other outing from the brand, this one pairs a clash of prints including feminine florals, classic stripes, Australian seascapes and lots of brilliant blooms. Key colours include chestnut brown and vintage pastel hues of clear blue, agave green and the aforementioned lavender – all designed to bring calm and serenity to the home this summer.

“In a nutshell, it continues the mix and match story that is uniquely Kip & Co!” says Alex.

Brand stalwarts will be glad to see favourites such as the tassel throws and velvets have been reproduced in new shades. The velvet cushion line-up has been reimagined too – the cute new Monstera design is one for the plant addicts.

Those new Monstera cushions are super cute

Velvet laptop cases have been added to the line-up also; a savvy move by the brand as a stylish spot to store your computer can be surprisingly hard to find. “The laptop cases are a fun new addition, as is the monstera cushion and delicate daisy chain cut-out bed throw.”

Throwback time: This peach daisy chain cut-out throw is giving me all the 90’s feels

A rather fun laptop case

When it comes to clothing, the latest apparel is some of Kip & Co’s best yet; stripes interplay with florals and a gorgeous Christmas star print make for a highly covetable range.

“For the little ones, we’re dialling up the fun with embroidery, foil, and full on colour in our prints – from cult favourite dinos, to rainbow shards, and outer space adventures. This range is sure to keep the kids dreaming big this summer,” says Alex.
