Dee and Darren knock $20k off their reserve with en suite

So, did you tune in to last night’s room reveals from the surprise sixth apartment? I did and I must say it just didn’t feel anywhere near as exciting as previous weeks. I guess the couples just aren’t going to be as invested in an apartment that isn’t ‘theirs’ but that said, the stakes were high. The results this week and next could make a huge difference to the final outcome.

In first place, winning $20k off their reserve, were Dee and Darren and I think they really deserved it for this en suite. Did you? Loved the tiles, the just the right amount of timber and the perfect (as ever) styling. I just wish Dee would stop making so many mean comments about everyone else!

In second place, winning $15k off their reserve, were Max and Karstan with this bedroom. I couldn’t get all that excited about it if I’m honest but then I’m never that excited by the bedrooms. It’s not a room I put a lot of decorating effort into personally, preferring to keep things simple, uncluttered and calm. I save all my imagination for the living and dining areas but that’s just me!

In third place, winning $10k off their reserve despite not quite finishing the job, were Simon and Shannon with their bathroom. I think the judges had a really tough job this week as how can you really compare a bathroom with a bedroom?

Then sadly, last and least, were Chris and Jenna and Michael and Carlene who got a big fat ZERO off their reserves. Ah well, there’s always next week guys!

The high drama Block Glasshouse terrace reveals

OMG, I  don’t know about you but I got seriously high blood pressure watching last night’s terrace reveals. Agh! So much work to do, Keith handing out extra work and stopping plans in their tracks at every turn and serious amounts of tantrums, tears and rain. Nightmare! Apart from Max and Karstan of course, who seemed pretty chilled about everything! So it’s really quite staggering that the end results were, in the main, so slick and impressive. I’m amazed that four out of five couples finished, let alone anything else!

Carlene & Michael: 2nd place

H1 Rm9 C&M Terrace EA 27

“How good is this?” and “Incredible,” were Shaynna’s words, followed by a “wow” from Darren. The judges all loved the timber cladding. Neale said the exposed brick in the indoor living area which he initially had misgivings about now made total sense in the context of the outdoor area. Darren said it felt like an urban oasis and Shaynna was amazed they’d achieved so much in just seven days, thinking of everything. Despite being close to the street, Neale said it had a feeling of seclusion which was perfect. It was going so very well until they “forgot” to put Max & Karstan’s ugly pipe lamp in their room for judging, as per the rules, losing them a point. When it came to the small upstairs terrace, Neale was in love again, calling it a real gem. The outdoor shower and vertical garden also went down well. “Michael and Carlene have a phenomenal apartment, ” said Shaynna, with Darren adding: “They’re sitting on a goldmine.” And just to finish it off, Neale declared they’d nailed it.

Chris & Jenna: last place

H2 Rm9 C&J Terrace EA 17

With their not one but two terraces, Chris & Jenna were falling seriously behind. Even Keith took pity on them and chose to muck in and help. Bless, what a secret softie! Not that it went down well with some of the other contestants… Nothing could stop the overwhelming reality of the sheer amount of work though, resulting in tears and domestics. With two unfinished rooms in a row you couldn’t help but feel sorry for them and nobody wants to see a man cry (poor Chris!).

While they were probably expecting the worst, Neale was very complimentary about the ivy wall and what they’d managed to achieve, creatively, on a budget. Shaynna commended them for picking themselves up each week and really trying but couldn’t ignore what hadn’t been finished but “damn well good on them!”). Neale said despite it not being finished you could see it was going to be really strong. The generous comments ended when the judges got upstairs to the rooftop however! The huge TV got plenty of criticism for being ugly and impractical. “Downstairs I could forgive them a lot but up here really doesn’t work,” summed up Neale.

Max & Karstan: 3rd place

The Block in Melbourne

All the judges agreed the couple’s room was warm, cohesive and tied in well with the apartment. Darren loved the remote control blinds and the hanging plants. Neale said the vertical garden was one of the best examples he’d seen yet and that the terrace had made a massive difference in finishing off the apartment, which in previous weeks had been criticised for being too cold and clinical. These two did lose a point though for not incorporating Dee and Darren’s hideous trumpet lights!

Get Max & Karstan’s look: Vertiscape green wall modules, Pop & Scott pots, Pop plant hanging string garden kit, Outdeco Gardenscreen Marakesh black.

Shannon & Simon: 4th place

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 19

The boys seemed to have one hurdle after another to overcome this week but, in their usual style, remained good humoured! But the judges couldn’t agree on the space. While Darren and Neale loved the hanging and other pots, Shaynna hated them and said they didn’t fit with the rest of the apartment. Neale said it just fell short of being absolutely brilliant while Shaynna said it was borderline boring. Owch! Neale’s hipster’s terrace was Shaynna’s abandoned warehouse! The boys also lost a point for not incorporating Michael and Carlene’s lamp.

H4 Rm9 S&S Terrace EA 33

Get Shannon & Simon’s look: Radial wall mural, wire powdercoated chairs, wire bar stools, steel macrame net.

Dee & Darren: WINNERS!

H5 Rm9 D&D Terrace EA 5

You’ve got to agree, the double Ds’ idea to create a mezzanine with city views was GENIUS. Neale and Shaynna agreed it was like a little Tuscan retreat. Neale said every now and again, more is more! As usual, the styling got big compliments. Neale said he couldn’t remember the last time he saw an apartment which was totally holistic in the way it came together. Darren got so excited when he spotted the mezzanine and ran up to check out the city views, saying you could happily sit their quietly, completely removed from the hustle and bustle of life. Shaynna said it was the sort of wow factor that would create a bidding war. Again, they lost a point though for not incorporating Chris and Jenna’s disco vertical garden. What a surprise!

The Block in Melbourne

Get Dee & Darren’s look: medium lantern, mini lantern, rustic pine reclaimed coffee table, Maine botanical cushion, 3-piece outdoor setting,  adjustable wall spotlight in copper,

After the terrace judging, in true Block style, came the big surprise that the next two weeks would be spent doing the sixth apartment between them all, with those creating winning rooms getting to take cash off their reserve prices. Will be interesting seeing all the couples working together to achieve one cohesive home. Eek!  Can’t wait for next week!

Covet my coffee table: with Caroline Khoo of nectar & stone

Caroline Khoo is the owner of boutique chocolate and dessert company nectar and stone, whose creations I’ve been admiring on Instagram for the past few weeks. The Melbourne brand’s sweet treats are works of art (and available to buy online, don’t worry!). So it’s perhaps no surprise Caz’s coffee table is a pretty one too. I think her former life in fashion also shines through.

IMG_5991

So, what’s on it?

The coffee table was handmade by her father, who is a carpenter. “I am a lover of handmade items as I feel it connects me with the person and my father always loves a challenge,” she said. “The coloured faceted bowls were handmade by misskellymadeintasmania (I totally need some of my own, don’t you?!). I asked her to make a collection for me in the nectar and stone colour hues. I have over 15 of these bowls in various shades.”

IMG_6016
Caz Khoo of nectar and stone

The geometric glass jar is from Anthropologie and was bought on a trip to LA in August. the books were gifts from her husband, who knows Caz’s love of interiors and colour. And the ombre pineapple chocolates with gold leaf detail are, of course, handmade by nectar and stone.

Caz was kind enough to send me a box and I can vouch for them tasting as good as they look. But I did feel bad about eating something so gorgeous! But not that bad…

The Block Glasshouse en suite room reveals

Well, it was a night of mixed reviews and plenty of drama and whingeing, was it not?! But I’m very glad the boys took out the top prize and I think they deserved it. I can’t help but like these two; they’re so much fun and they seem to be genuinely nice guys. But I can’t not mention Dee’s super harsh bitching about Shaynna at the end of the episode. Definitely a step too far in my opinion. I’m a big fan of Dee and Darren’s style but the attitude I’ve been trying to ignore is bugging me now.  Anyway, back to the important stuff: the design!

CARLENE & MICHAEL

Poor Carlene and Michael and their lack of a door! Thank goodness the judges could at least see they intended to have one! Darren said it was very glassy (yes glassy, not classy!) and fitting for the Block Glasshouse. Neale loved the joinery, sink and benchtop but found the room a bit cold. Shaynna said the pendants didn’t really work and they would have been better off with something in a timber finish. Darren, on the other hand, said he wouldn’t change anything and they’d done a really amazing job. And let’s just not talk about the dried flowers…

The Block in Melbourne

Get Carlene and Michael’s look: Jensen pendants, copper vase.

CHRIS & JENNA

H2 Rm8 C&J Ensuite EA 22

This bathroom made Carlene and Michael’s missing door seem like nothing! Although it was full of great features, the judges couldn’t ignore the fact it was seriously unfinished (despite them carrying on working for 10 minutes after Scotty blew the whistle (naughty!). Shaynna loved the texture and shadows of the geometric tiles. I’m still undecided. I love the concept of 3D tiles but I wasn’t loving the scale of these. Brave choice though, good on them.

Everyone loved the exposed copper pipe leading to the shower and the fact that there was a bath. But as Neale said, you turn one way and it’s a bathroom by the contestants who got 30/30 for their main bathroom and you turn the other way and it’s a mess! Neale said they’d tried to do too much and incorporate too many ideas while Darren said he could see its potential and it was a real shame it hadn’t been finished in time. And just to put the boot in a little more, Shaynna and Neale both agreed the styling was really bad. Awkward!

Get Chris and Jenna’s look: Ando pendant in concrete, driftwood drum stool, emScents candle, VERE body products.

MAX & KARSTAN

H3 Rm8 M&K Ensuite EA 02

It started off well with Max and Karstan’s reveal but very quickly seemed to turn sour. Shaynna said the room left her cold and felt a bit clinical. Neale said it was very hard. Mr Nice Guy Darren said it flowed very nicely from the en suite with its simple palette, while Neale said it felt dated. Darren made a big deal of the lighting and said the pair always make great choices in that department. He said it felt consistent with the rest of the apartment but didn’t appeal to him personally. I actually really liked its gloss and hotel feel. I also like a dark tiled bathroom. And not just because I think it will hide dust…

Get Max and Karstan’s look: Unika pendant, Tolo LED lights, Glasshouse Bora Bora candle.

SHANNON & SIMON: WINNERS!

H4 Rm8 S&S Ensuite EA 37

Well of COURSE they all loved the timber bath. “Oh my God, that’s awesome,” said Shaynna, who loved it so much she kicked off her heels and hopped in to try it out for size. Neale said the boys had absolutely nailed it and Darren said it was really really good. It was quite obvious the boys were going to win. Shaynna said it felt like a high end hotel suite and all the judges agreed this bathroom would become a key selling point for their apartment and something buyers would go crazy for. I absolutely loved this bathroom and think it totally deserved the win. I am a real bath lover and that timber tub is now on my dream house wish list!

H4 Rm8 S&S Ensuite EA 11

Get Shannon and Simon’s winning look: Lab pendants, Nord pendant, Octopus ornament, Sibella Court Gypsy book, Wood and Water timber bath.

DARREN & DEE

H5 Rm8 D&D Ensuite EA 55

It may be small but Darren and Dee’s en suite looked pretty perfectly formed to me. Darren said it took your breath away but in a really gentle way. Neale said it was just beautiful. But Shaynna said there wasn’t enough storage (which did not go down well with Dee: understatement of the year!).

H5 Rm8 D&D Ensuite EA 62

Get Darren and Dee’s look: Constellation single pendant.

I’d love to know which was your favourite and what you thought of Chris and Jenna’s 3D tiles and the boys’ timber bath?

The Block Glasshouse living and dining rooms

After last week’s kitchen reveals, fantastic as they were, I was ready for some soft furnishings this week, so living/dining reveals were just the thing! In my mind, the winners were Max and Karstan and Darren and Dee, but the judges didn’t agree, with Michael and Carlene taking out the top spot. It was a disappointing week for the boys, whose dwindling budget saw them produce a room the judges found didn’t match up to the rest of their apartment. And for Chris and Jenna, who came fifth, they were more than a little “over it” thanks to the many criticisms of the judges, who they said were being rude, rather than judging. Eek!

MAX AND KARSTAN

H3 Rm7 M&K Living Dining EA 2

Max and Karstan’s reveal started well with a (very macho!) squeal of delight from Darren! They all loved the natural light afforded by the windows and the striking pendant above the dining table (how gorgeous?!). Neale said he absolutely loved the sophisticated palette and look of restrained glamour. Shaynna said the softness of the room capitalised on the natural light. Darren loved the recessed carpet (genius!) and said it was elegant and a break from the concrete floor. Neale went on to say the look was upmarket and he couldn’t find anything he didn’t like! The custom concrete table also went down very well with all the judges.

SIMON AND SHANNON

H4 Rm7 S&S Living Dining EA 10

This one didn’t get off to a good start with “the weird corner under the stairs” not going down well with Darren. Neale was immediately underwhelmed, saying some parts were extremely high end, like the floor, but others were low budget and he didn’t like the art. Darren did however. “It jars with the rest of the apartment,” said Neale. And Darren and Shaynna criticised the too-small rug in the living area. And as for the pullout clothes line? I’m not sure anyone knows why they thought that was a good idea!

Get Simon and Shannon’s look: Masai artwork, Sean Dix Forte round glass coffee table, Sean Dix Forte glass dining table, Block 2-print set, Nice View print, replica Eames DSW chair, Florida lamp, Jacob oak floor lamp, Audrey table lamp, Shelley Panton salad bowl.

CHRIS AND JENNA

The Block in Melbourne

Well, it’s probably no surprise Chris and Jenna felt so hard done by this week with all the criticism over this room, but I do think they could have been a little less whingey about it. Easy for me to say though, eh?! All the judges said they didn’t like seeing the study nook as soon as they walked in. Darren was really upset about the badly finished paintwork and the mess, right down to the dusty desk which hadn’t been wiped before styling items on it. Shaynna took exception to the “random” low shelf and suggested they remove it. All that before they even got to the living/dining area proper! The timber dining table was a hit (phew!) with Darren calling it amazing and Shaynna calling it divine. Shaynna thought the pendant above it though, although nice, was too small and felt miserly. The judges liked the lamp, couch and chair but felt they didn’t work well together. Neale said the room lacked soul and Shaynna said it had no mood at all. Ouch! Neale said nothing about the room made him want to stay there. Oh, and the dining chairs wouldn’t fit under the table…

Get Chris and Jenna’s look: Opaque black shadows pendants, Geo oval coffee table, Mia armchair, Juno armchair, Harlequin custom sofa, wine rack dining table, recycled timber pew, Frame lamp with custom shade, throw rug with fringe.

DEE AND DARREN

The Block in Melbourne

I was a big fan of this room. I mean, it has a massive Bromley and French oak herringbone floors?! Gorgeous! Shaynna remarked on the beautiful styling and Neale said the parquetry floor was an absolute winner. The compliments stopped there from Neale though, who said he had been expecting something more and that everything was fighting with the Bromley art. His least favourite thing though was the over-styled under stairs space. I have to agree it looked a bit wrong, but overall, I loved this look. Darren said the space was beautiful and exceptionally well considered.

Get Dee and Darren’s look: Enzo 1 Light floor lamp, black lantern, Labaratory samphire candle, Easy Luxury, Simple Conservatory dining table, Great Gig limited edition print by Prudence Caroline.

MICHAEL AND  CARLENE: WINNERS!

The Block in Melbourne

It was a case of last but not least for winners Michael and Carlene and their impressive bookcase! It started well with the computer-controlled lights and just kept getting better. The judges all cooed over the chair with the small table (which they realised could be move and added onto the end of the dining table when required for extra seating — clever!) and Neale said they had a great eye. Onto the impressive cabinetry and Neale said it was the first time he had seen a bookcase styled properly on the show. Darren was impressed by the way they’d styled op shop finds by colour coding and paying attention to size and scale. Neale said they’d created a very homely environment but he feared the exposed brick wall would be polarising. Shaynna disagreed saying it would appeal to many buyers. She wasn’t a fan of the too-blingy pendant light though and said it should go. Agreed!

Sarah Jessica Parker’s New York home for sale

Oh, you’ve got to love a good celebrity real estate stalk! Sarah Jessica Parker’s West Village home in New York is up for sale again and I really like her style. It’s not as eclectic as you might imagine, but then again we must remember she in fact an actress and not her Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw…

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Kim Pearson

It took interior designer and stylist Kim Pearson almost 20 years to find the perfect coffee table and when she did, she bought two!

AGCl7FeDCek5HlOoTtw8AcffRnyS0QEF4Xd6zKrJDmA,yBDvBCAmfRauGzB6EhO9Oowj4M799LP4Yr7OoGSH41U,AIY4Cq8zd0UHIU5JIw4tC7PV7uh_7vkfpPSNBKIiMB8

“We’re floor dwellers so we invested in rugs and vast floor cushions instead, with children and dogs crawling/sprawled around and over us! I stumbled (actually kind of really did fall over) upon these tables in a sale a few years ago, reduced from literally thousands to hundreds. Worth a 20 year wait! American, made of polished nickel, solid walnut and glass, they are heavy and polished and refined and robust all at the same time in a classic tray table style. Timber shelf below and nickel framed heavy, clear glass above. Low too, which I like. One wasn’t enough though as I like a coffee table to be generous so I bought two rectangles, pushed them together and voila, one big square one!”

Screen Shot 2014-09-04 at 10.01.01 am

It’s nestled in front of the fire and surrounded by squishy velvet, feather-filled sofas and old Victorian armchairs. (Yes, I want to live there too!) “It’s covered in piles and piles of books and mags — British Vogue, World of Interiors, Vogue Living, Vanity Fair,” says WA-based Kim. “There are masses of coffee table books; a delicious vice of mine. I’m a sucker for a great cover and I sometimes buy them just for that and enjoy swapping them around according to size, colour and topic.”

The roses are from her garden. “I keep the flowers low using old silver, glass and ceramic bowls. Candles too, Ciré Trudon — Ernesto and Roi Soleil — being my all time favourites. And what’s missing is the Smarties. Because I ate them !”

A light and bright real kitchen reno

Homeowner: Jessie Harvey

Cost: $28,000

This family kitchen is the hub of the home and it’s hard to believe it was once dark, dingey, uninspiring and all kinds of brown! Homeowner and mum Jessie Harvey, tells us what they did.

201409Apr_6657

“We opted for a new kitchen as a makeover was not an option due to the condition of the old carcasses, which were literally falling apart! We installed Granite Transformations Trend Surfaces in Bianco Real on the main benchtop and Trend Surfaces in Venus Grey on the island benchtop. Gloss white doors opened up the space and a mirror splashback reflects the light and garden opposite the kitchen.” Add to the mix some IAG appliances and concrete effect wallpaper above the overhead cupboards to tie in with the grey island benchtop and create some texture, and the kitchen was given a whole new lease on life.

201409Apr_6653

“The space before was dark and closed in by walls so we wanted to open it up by removing two walls on either side of the kitchen,” Jessie explains. “It’s a much more open space now with the lounge and dining room opening to the kitchen. The removal of one of the walls also means there’s a view to the backyard, perfect for watching the kids outside while cooking.”

The family, including kids Bonnie-Willow (seven) and Banjo Lee (four), didn’t used to want to spend any time in the kitchen. “Now, I’m always in there,” Jessie says. “My kids are always doing homework, craft activities and anything messy really on the benchtops so it was essential to have surfaces that could allow them to do this without any staining or marking. The stone surfaces are amazing. The kitchen really is the centre of the house now.”

201409Apr_6663

Jessie is most happy with the amount of benchtop space she now has and loves the feeling of openness. “I can watch the kids in most spaces of the house from the kitchen now. I also love putting the pendant lights on over the island benchtop at night time as it creates such a relaxed and calm mood.”

And here are the before photos…

Rent my style: Jess works her magic on home in need of TLC!

Here at Interiors Addict, we just don’t buy into the idea that rental homes have to look bland or lacking in style and personality. Rent My Style is dedicated to showcasing the best of our readers’ rental home decorating efforts. They’re not show homes, they’re real homes!

Moving to Melbourne two years ago with only the small items that could fit in their car, Jess Viscarde and her partner Ryan were prepared to start from scratch. Finding a 90s townhouse rental home in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, which was in some serious need of TLC, Jess immediately saw it as the perfect decorating challenge.

ighHNYmCNsVREBGbZK6IKf7MzFHcT3k4d_LIjtvDu5M

“On the whole, the house has great bones, a major reason we wanted to live here. Timber floorboards, high ceilings, lots of natural light. But the house is in a major need of TLC, the walls are in terrible condition, and are about seven years overdue a paint job! We try to hide all the nicks, water stains, peeling paint and eyesores with artwork or just learn to live with it!”

NClnYOoVY0A-G86wV70u1tB4EcoManlbNpVsoM-1sIE

With a style that is an eclectic mix of contemporary, industrial and vintage, Jess has a knack for blending and mixing styles. A designer by trade, she has an eye for seeing potential where no one else can, having decorated the majority of her home with quirky secondhand finds.

“As budget was a major issue, many of the pieces in our home are from thrift shops or Gumtree, eBay or the classifieds. We have a few splurge items, but made sure these things were items we absolutely loved and would be happy to live with for many years to come.”

sM0Do9GcFd302pC0FgSmFWyS6_vZ9vOHhI1j2V5v70U-1

CpRsVQncoMRm0nQ8RqGssrR1gXZ44095jbhpGSR-LHM

For Jess, the secret to rental decorating is something very simple: treat the rental like your home! “Make it a space you enjoy coming home to after a busy day or a place where you are proud and happy to invite your friends over as guests. Don’t just think just because it’s a rental and it’s not mine, I can’t be house proud.”

rRduHJcRPcEfJTC2NqBjzTB2XdL-miQ1xTdmylDsG2U,9t-7GjBYA29B1kN2IDeC1GvHa5o12MIXc-BqImWPe3c

Z7CKGLuYOskn4n5UnuXdI38S8k7sBJ-zYlJ3L4J7P-E

To make your rental feel like home, Jess recommends doing three things: hanging art, being inventive with light fixtures and adding indoor plants and fresh flowers.

“Personalise the space with things you love, make it reflect you and the people you’re living with, hang art using 3M adhesive hooks (or I have used oversized pegs with Velcro 3m adhesive to hang photographs and lightweight prints). Be inventive with light fixtures. I use a bamboo ladder with an industrial miner’s lamp attached to it to add some ambient lighting and height to the room (see below). And make indoor plants and fresh flowers a big feature in your home, they inject life and colour and can be moved around, making that boring, lifeless corner more interesting.”

BtZvRpZtW5V2AZvVURBWS_lx3PZ2gSFnFsxk3RcF74w

Having just launched her own small business, The Eclectic Creative Studio, Jess has found the experience of rental decorating really useful in growing her design skills. Not only has it required her to work with a very tight budget, Jess has learnt the importance of experimenting and working with what you’ve got.

“Decorating whilst renting definitely makes you work with what you’ve got and be more spontaneous and open to rearranging furniture and mixing things up. I regularly change the house around; it helps keep things fresh and interesting. And I like to ‘shop your home,’ so change up accessories and soft furnishings that you already own, put some away, take some out, put the cushions on the bed instead of the sofa, that sort of thing.”

The Block Glasshouse: Staircase, laundry & powder room reveals

Well, it’s week five and I finally got to watch The Block room reveals for myself, since returning from our six-month trip last Monday. Gosh, I’ve missed my Block fix and I wasn’t disappointed. Michael and Carlene’s efforts, which won, definitely impressed me most. Let’s take a look at all the couples’ rooms and where you can shop their looks, whoever your favourites are.

Carlene and Michael

The judges spent plenty of time in their space, which eventually won, because there were so many details to look at. Neale said that the metallic details were very on trend but he likes how they’d no gone overboard and just used touches. Shaynna said it was very unusual (in a good way) and Neale called it really beautiful. They all agreed Michael and Carlene had set a really high benchmark and created off the shelf luxury. A great start to the episode!

Darren and Shaynna are still undecided on whether creating the void was a good idea and Neale found the stairs looked a little too heavy. It got so much worse when they went into the laundry and powder room though. “Oh my God, what happened?” was Neale’s reaction. Oh dear. Darren said it wasn’t working and Neale added there were angles and hard lines everywhere and it just wasn’t working. Shaynna went as far as to say she couldn’t believe the choices they’d made. The “disco benches” in the laundry failed to impress either and were branded dated.

Max and Karstan

They were not off to a great start with their staircase, enclosed by a glass wall. Neale said it felt small and constrained, Shaynna said she didn’t mind it and Darren thought it lacked warmth. More significantly though, Darren pointed out that it was high maintenance (dark steps and glass wall will show every mark) and the lack of hand rail was actually dangerous. Darren loved the lights in the bathroom and called them amazing. Neale however, said he felt ambivalent and that the design was too generic and not exciting. Darren agreed the palette was a little dated. Shaynna said it felt clinical but it did tick all the boxes. Neale said buyers would be looking for something more.

Darren and Deanne

The Block in Melbourne

Poor Darren and Deanne and their unfinished staircase, bathroom and laundry! It was never going to be a winner or get a great reaction. Darren was at least kind enough to say the staircase design was simple and elegant. Neale said the bathroom and laundry were more like the Darren and Deanne they knew but he couldn’t ignore how unfinished they were and they had to judge on what they saw. Darren said it wasn’t what he expected to see from a couple who had so far been so strong and consistent. He said he loved the tapware, handle and colour palette choices.

The boys certainly did well this week. Shaynna and Neale both loved the staircase on first glance, with Darren adding that it had the same elements as Max and Karstan’s but because of its shape, was more interesting and appealing. Shaynna said the bathroom felt balanced. The judges loved it and said it was much more successful than their upstairs bathroom. Neale said it would appeal to the design savvy, urban, sophisticated buyer.

WHERE TO BUY: Saba pendant, Alrik pendants, Tree Rings artwork.

What did you think of the scores? There seems to be a lot of backlash from the public who think Darren and Deanne were scored too highly considering how unfinished their rooms were. What did YOU think?

Get the look: the Block Glasshouse master bedroom room reveals

Surely I wasn’t the only one surprised about last night’s room reveal winner, eh? It was another week of double room reveals for the Blockheads and I liked what I saw.

H1 Rm4 C&M Master MP 6275

Get Michael and Carlene’s look (above): Artwork, Tom Dixon short pendant, Tom Dixon tall pendanthallway prints.

Michael and Carlene really lifted their styling game this week. I loved their master bedroom! Neale’s first words were “Wow! Very cool!” and I have to agree. It may or may not have to do with the fact I love all the finishes they’ve used. The sheers were gorgeous and those pendants! Tom Dixon, need I say more? Shaynna loved the artwork in the entrance and described the room as sexy with a simple colour palette and lots of texture. Neale loved the natural linen look bedspread and thought the overall room was very contemporary but also very neutral; a very sophisticated blank canvas. To be perfectly honest, I felt it seemed smaller than the other bedrooms, but I loved it nonetheless.

H1 Rm4 C&M Master MP 2836

I’m all for dark wooden finishes in a wardrobe, it’s just classy, it seemed to be a consistent theme cross the wardrobes and Neale also loved the dark wood. Shaynna was a fan of the storage (surprise, surprise), but there was no wow factor or anything to get the buyers excited in their wardrobe.

H2 Rm4 C&J Master Mp 2905

Get Chris & Jenna’s look (above): Rug, bedside table, bed, pendants.

Did you see that copper wall? How’s that for a statement? I’m all for copper; that and gold are my current obsessions. But as much as I love it, I think it’s too much for a bedroom. That would have cost an absolute mint. Do you think it was worth it? Darren and Neale were truly wowed and Shaynna said it was insane! It was definitely a million dollar wall, however Neale said it leaves him completely cold and if you walk into this room and don’t like it, it’s all over. The judges agreed that to pull off the wall they needed to up the other finishes and I tend to agree. I loved that they used every inch of space in the wardrobe and thought the kickboard drawerss were a great idea.

H2 Rm4 C&J Master Mp 2910

Get Chris & Jenna’s look (above): Aura quilt cover, pillow cases, Pop & Scott pot.

H3 Rm4 M&K Master MP2850

Get Max and Karstan’s look (above): Chair, side table, pendant, artwork, bedside tables.

Neale said now that is what he called a master bedroom. All the judges loved the colour scheme but personally I thought just a tad too much orange, however it did feel bigger than the first two rooms and I liked that they kept it relatively simple. Darren loved the bedhead, the high quality linen and that big bronze mirror; he said bronze mirror was one of his favourite things ever.

H3 Rm4 M&K Master MP6315

I liked the natural light coming through the wardrobe with the dark wood. The jewellery draws were a nice touch and Darren thought it was hot. Storage queen Shaynna was so excited about the laundry chute, and so was I! (it’s the little things, right?). Neale loved how they interpreted luxury and was really impressed.

H4 Rm4 S&S Master MP 2866

Get Simon and Shannon’s look (above): Bedhead, artwork, bedside table, bed, chairs, coffee table.

The bedroom kings are back! The boys’ master bedroom felt huge — more like a master suite than a master bedroom. I absolutely loved it and it was hands down my favourite this week. The boys absolutely nailed it (from my armchair anyway!). Shaynna walked in and commented that it was huge and she loved the lounge space they created within the room. Darren liked that you could sit in the window and take the sun in and I have to agree. He loved the textures and said the boys have good style and taste and make good decisions. I loved the bedhead, those copper pendants and that throw (ok, let’s be honest, I loved it all). I also love that the boys know how to create a sense of scale within each of their rooms. Neale loved the splashes of colour and said he’d never seen a bedhead like that before (obviously not reading Interiors Addict often enough, Neale!).

The Block in Melbourne

Wow, wow, wow! That wardrobe is huge and I want it. Simon and Shannon’s wardrobe definitely felt substantially bigger than the other couples’ and I loved the sense of open space in it. The judges weren’t too keen on the exposed LED lights, however overall, were impressed.

H5 Rm4 D&D Master MP 2891

Get Darren and Deanne’s look (above): Artwork, table lamp, chair, small pendant, large pendant, side table.

It was kind of the Blockheads to style Darren and Deanne’s room in their absence attending to family matters. Shaynna did not expect the fireplace and all the judges were impressed with it. I think buyers will love the idea of a fireplace in the bedroom, especially during those freezing Melbourne nights. Neale said they are really really good and Shaynna said it suited the apartment they have created. I definitely think Darren and Deanne have the most consistent apartment so far. I thought the panelling behind the bedhead was amazing but think it would be a nightmare to keep clean. Their wardrobe was humongous and took full advantage of the ceiling height. It will be interesting to see how close the Blockheads got the styling and whether it have looked completely different had the couple done it. What do you think? Did they do Deanne proud?

It was a close call again with but Max and Karstan took out the win by half a point (to my surprise) with 28. Michael and Carlene came in a close second with 27.5 and bedroom kings Simon and Shannon came in third with 27.

I thought the boys would have had it in the bag! What were your thoughts? Did you agree with the judges’ scoring?

“I have a huge assortment of books because I love to have my inspiration at my fingertips,” Diane says. “One of my most cherished books is the special edition of Windows at Bergdorf Goodman because it’s aspirational and it chronicles the amazing work of one of my oldest friends, David Hoey.

“My coffee table is covered in books of my favourite photographers and artists such as Slim Aarons, Alex Katz and Elizabeth Peyton. I took the names for my Arthur G furniture line from inspirational women and that’s how the Peyton sofa got its name.

“The coffee table itself was one of my happiest finds on eBay. We had to get it delivered from Sydney but it was worth it. The ceramic impression of Roy Lichtenstein’s Girl with Hair Ribbon was handmade by my daughter Coco. I found both the vintage brass ram’s head bust on a lucite plinth and the gorgeous marble obelisks at antique stores while I was still living in America but you can find like items at Graham Geddes for those shopping locally.

Beautiful Sydney home wins Best Interior Design at the 2014 BDAV Building Design Awards.

Simple but beautiful, the Bolingbroke Parade project designed by Dominique Hunter, was awarded Best Residential Interior Design at the recent BDAV Building Design Awards.

Artist Saskia Folk exhibits work in her home as part of Melbourne Art Fair

You can get a look at Saskia Folk’s gorgeous home as well as her art when she exhibits where she lives as part of Melbourne Art Fair next week.

The artist, whose Melbourne home is a former shoe manufacturers which used to belong to well known stylist Lynda Gardener, has an interesting and well travelled background. In 2009, a unique job opportunity took her to the desert where she began work as a field officer for Papunya Tula Artists and spent time in Kintore (530km west of Alice Springs) and Kiwirrkurra (770km west, over the West Australian border). During her time driving through the desert, she passed numerous abandoned cars, observing the different stages of decay. These vehicles stood out from the landscape because of their vivid colours – blue, green, red and yellow – now rusty and decayed after time weathered by the desert, some for up to 60 years.

Artist Saskia Folk
Artist Saskia Folk

Fascinated by the colours and textures, dents and fractures of the abandoned cars, Saskia purchased a cordless angle grinder and began venturing out into the desert, returning with a Troupy full of different panels. Back in Alice Springs, they were cleaned and the edges buffed, ready to ship to Melbourne to be presented in open box frames. Saskia does not alter the surface of the works, the environment created the unique markings seen on each piece.

In 2011, Saskia selected a series of panels for a sellout show at Scott Livesey Galleries in Melbourne. This month, she will exhibit 38 more panels, of various sizes, throughout her two-storey open plan home in North Fitzroy. Viewings are by appointment from 13 to 17 August.

Set outside of the regular gallery environment – with works shown in her kitchen and living room, down hallways, upstairs and in bedrooms – she will also present the metal works with video projected on a wall, to give context to the panels and their origins in the desert.

Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 12.17.43 AM

Melbourne born Saskia lives between Melbourne and Thora in New South Wales. She lived in Central Australia for two years and has returned a couple of times a year since. “The desert got under my skin, it holds a special place in my heart,” she says.

In September, she will return to Alice Springs, after raising money through a Pozible campaign, to take part in a three-week arts festival called Free BBQ Cash Giveaway. Using her trusty angle grinder, she’ll create a live public performance with local band Bat Hazzard, as well as holding an exhibition.

Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 12.18.53 AM

In 2015, Saskia plans to head to the US and drive through the desert states, looking for American cars to use for her artwork and then exhibit in New York, LA and Miami. “I like the idea of the panels staying in the country of origin, they are part of our history, like an artefact.”

When: Friday 15 August 6-to-10pm or by appointment from 13 to 17 August 2014.

Where: 424 Nicholson Street, North Fitzroy, VIC 3068.

Works: 38 panels, priced between $450 and $1,500.

Jen & Olivia’s Officeworks desk makeover

Brought to you by Officeworks

This is an interiors blog so when we hear the word makeover, we think: make something look nicer. So when Officeworks set us a makeover challenge for a workspace, what it would look like (colour scheme etc) were top of mind. That said, the neat freak in me knows that one of the keys to a tidy and good looking room is having a place for everything and everything in its place. So with this in mind, as I’m currently overseas in Europe, editorial assistant Olivia Shead (in Sydney) and I approached this as a team effort!

What better excuse than a new financial year to give your workspace a fresh new look and a declutter and organise? It’s like back when you were at school and you bought a new pencil case and notebook and vowed to only write it in your very best handwriting. And while even the prettiest desks will probably end up drowning in bits of paper eventually, it feels good to start with the best intentions!

For me personally, this time of year means scrabbling around for tax and super-related paperwork and wishing I had been more organised for the past 12 months. And being self-employed brings with it more responsibility for your own paperwork, like it or not! As well as keeping just about everything else together. There is no office cleaner (oh yeah, that’s me!) or in-house accountant.

I scoured the Officeworks website for pretty yet practical items to create a tidy, functional and good looking desk set up and Olivia set it up in her home workspace. Let’s face it, if you’re lucky enough (in our opinion) to work from home, being able to choose the less corporate items is a major bonus. While in my life as an employee and manager I often visited my local Officeworks to buy essentials, my boss would definitely have frowned if I’d returned with everything in hot pink. Well, now I’m my own boss, looky what happened!

I decided on a stylish scheme of hot pink and aqua with some white to stop it getting out of control. I already knew about the brand’s Philosophy range which is always full of on-trend stationery and desk items, but was delighted to discover the Martha Stewart range too. Who knew?! Officeworks are full of surprises. Their new furniture range contains some good looking, affordable finds such as the Kirby Heartwood Desk (very Scandinavian, no?) for just $163, and the retro-style Hummingbird Evoque Slide Out Desk for $167.

What we bought:

(*The cat is the journalist’s own).

While our makeover was very stationery, desk and fashion-focused, Officeworks has everything you need for a home office, whether it’s a corner of a student’s bedroom or something altogether larger and more functional. Need a new laptop, printer, laminator or whiteboard? Tick, tick, tick, tick! All of this and more is available at Officeworks, alongside their many services, such as printing, easy parcel delivery (saving you from queuing at the post office) and access to tech support. If you’re working from home we assume you don’t have the luxury of a meeting room for clients. Did you know many Officeworks stores offer this too? I had no idea!

If you like a bright and cheerful desk like ours, check out this video with tips on how to add colour to your workspace:

Of course, you want to see the less pretty before photo too, don’t you? Here you go…

WIN

If this has left you inspired to master your workspace and you’d like the chance to win a $100 Officeworks voucher to get you started, comment below, answering the question: how will you master your workspace? Entries close 5pm on Tuesday 12 August 2014. Terms & conditions.

The fifth and final episode of Diary of a Reno: the big reveal

It’s finally time to reveal the finished reno and let you know how much money was made on the investment. In this episode, we have more keeping-it-real information and advice from Naomi Findlay and we also hear from real estate agent, Damon Sellis. We think the house is transformed and looks amazing! We think you’ll agree…

An offer was received and accepted after a mere five days on the market. Over 135 parties went through the property during open inspection during that time.

The final project profit, after all costs were taken into consideration, was $25,000. Not bad for six weeks’ work!

“What makes it all happen is a great team of trades and a great agent working hard on the overall goals of the project,” Naomi says. “Vision and design obviously play a key role but it must always stay grounded on the goal of the venture and the business. It is not all about design. It must be grounded in market research and a budget. Top that off with some targeted styling and you are away!”

Happy renovating!

Inspiring workspace tour with interior designer Kim Pearson

Today, we have a real treat of a workspace tour for you! This divine space belongs to WA interior designer and stylist Kim Pearson who just oversaw a beautiful revamp of her new space in the heart of Perth’s design hub, Chelsea Village in Nedlands. Come inside…

Image 1

Kim approached her own studio with the same meticulous attention to detail reserved for her clients’ projects. “I used a combination of existing and new pieces — a 19th Century French sofa re-covered in floral linen, a Victorian English armchair recovered in a beautiful autumnal watercoloured Italian cotton, a new custom feather-filled sofa upholstered in vintage teal velvet designed by me, and an oval extendable pedestal table purchased for $50 (yes!) on Gumtree that I had sprayed satin white for client meetings.”

Image 2

Image 4

There’s also classic French cafe chairs, an old fireplace she found, painted white and filled with blackboard in place of the fire, custom pine trestle tables and Ikea shelving. “I also collected lots of beautiful, precious and not-so-precious vintage and antique china for tea, coffee, cake and client lunch meetings.” Don’t you just wish you were one of Kim’s clients?!

Image 5

Local printmaker Magali Dincher, of Beau est Mien in William Street, Northbridge, was commissioned to paint the florals on the front and back windows. “I wanted the studio wrapped front and back with flowers for winter — why not!? — as a celebration of beauty and joy. Goodness knows we need it with all that’s going on in the world. I thought it would be fun and make me, and others I hope, happy.”

Image 6

This space is not your average studio/office/showroom. In fact, Kim calls it a multi-passionate, multi-disciplinary, multi-directional design service for interiors! “We are a truly bespoke boutique practice and bring each and every client and project the finest attention to detail and results — beautiful, exciting, original and functional,” she adds. “We’ve recently completed some fabulous and diverse projects from the first ferry re-launch of the iconic Rottnest Express ferry fleet, to a Fremantle harbourside cafe and grill housed in an original cargo shed, to a series of beautiful family Perth homes, character and new.”

Image 7

Established in 2002, Kim Pearson Design’s new 2014 home is conveniently within easy reach of some the finest fabric agencies and designers in the state. Open by appointment “or by chance,” prospective customers are always welcome to pop in for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee (and cake!).
