Jen’s tips for changing up your interiors for autumn/winter

Did you know we only have a few days left of summer? Sad, I know, but there’s always a silver lining. I don’t know about you but I love a bit of a seasonal decorating change-up in my home. Any excuse to buy and play around with new accessories, I say! It doesn’t have to be expensive either. Here are my top tips.

1. Change your cushions. You might want to swap out your brights and neons for something a bit more warm or muted. And think about textures too: now’s the time to experiment with knitted and velvet cushions for the colder months. Gorgeous!

Get the look: the Interiors Addict guide to wedding styling

Today it’s 2 months since I married my love. How times flies when you’re honeymooning, moving house and enjoying married life! Before I completely let go of being a recent bride and get on with being a wife, I thought I’d share one last wedding post with you, this time about the styling aspect.

interiors addict wedding styling

It will come as no surprise that I was more interested in what my wedding would look like than what I’d look like! I don’t DO dresses. I do however, do decor! So I had a lot of fun with this part of wedding planning. Here are some highlights and details of all my suppliers.

Perhaps the most talked about things at my wedding were: the dress, the flowers and the vintage caravan which I had arranged to serve tea and biscuits (I know, how English) as a fun and pretty time-killer after church and before the reception. That Vintage Caravan were brilliant. I’d seen their pink caravan (Sweet Jane’s Travelling Teahouse) at events before but when I found out they had a new addition, Spencer, who was not only very handsome but also navy and therefore on colour scheme, it was just meant to be!

Suffice to say none of my guests had ever been to a wedding where they served tea from a caravan parked on the street outside the church before and everyone said it was “very Jen”. The priest, in his wisdom, didn’t hesitate to give us the go ahead. Kelly Holcroft and her team did a top job of styling the grassy area around Spencer too, which suited the relaxed, pretty vibe we were going for. Total event professionals!

Jen’s 10 Christmas gifts for the home under $50

Brown Trading Co’s cushions are bang on trend and great value at $29.95. My pick is this gold confetti design

These agate coasters would brighten up any coffee table. They’re also great for putting under candles. I have one on my desk because it makes my glass of water feel a little bit more exciting! Buy 4 for $36.50 from Zakkia. Available in pink, blue and purple.

Why not start someone’s Dinosaur Designs collection for them with this Flow salt dish, available in a wide range of colours, for $45?

Personalised candles from Bombardier Designs

I first discovered Bombardier Designs’ candles when my friend Lauren bought a couple of D&J initial candles for Damian and I as an engagement present.

With Christmas approaching, and as a sucker for candles, unique gifts and pretty much anything personalised (keep me away from the monogramming machine at Pottery Barn!), I think it’s about time I shared these with you!

3 real rooms with heart

By Meghan McTavish

Home styling is much like fashion, in the sense that it’s not really healthy to fall all over yourself trying to emulate every picture perfect look featured within the pages of the glossy mags. Mags do envy-inducing escapism oh so well but we love blogs like Interiors Addict for Jen’s personal tips. It’s like getting advice from a friend – which we know is sometimes the best place to go if you’re in a bind.

There’s also gold to be found in real homes and we think there’s really nowhere that sums up a person’s personality more than in their living room. Here are 3 difference spaces that we’ve shot for Citizens of the World that have proved to be some of our most inspirational.

Jewellery designer Alex Smyth-Kirk of Vera Xane

Alex seems to feel very comfortable with colour, which is always fun to shoot. We love how her couch and chair are very muted but make an excellent base for all her incredible art and bright cushions.

How to deal with a case of decorative accessory overload in your home

If, like me, you love a vignette, are drawn to pretty shiny things like a magpie and believe in the power of a decorative accessory or 2 (okay, okay, 20!) to brighten up and add personality to your home, you may know where I’m coming from.

These decorative accessories are also known as:

  • objet d’art
  • ornaments
  • trinkets
  • knick knacks

In my case, in my living area alone, these objets include chunks of amethyst, a Georg Jensen brass bowl full of champagne corks, candles, stacks of coffee table books, a bone china owl (bloody owls!), bowls, mirrored trays, perspex trays, glass cloches (the aforementioned four all have more stuff on or underneath them), slices of agate, trinket boxes, a paper sculpture fashioned from a vintage book, vintage crystal, coral, not one but two decorative pineapples, and so it goes on. And on. And on.

You can imagine the dusting! I’m well aware I’m starting to sound like one of those cliches from F**k Your Noguchi Coffee Table (but without the replica furniture). Consequently this is so not a kid friendly zone, much to the amusement of my friends with kids (who I love, incidentally!).

Behind the scenes at the new look Palm Beach Collection candles shoot

A new look for Palm Beach Collection called for a new photoshoot at Manyara Home on Sydney’s northern beaches and Interiors Addict went behind the scenes.

Palm Beach Candles group shot

The Palm Beach Collection story started in 2009 when brother and sister duo Kirsten Walker and Mike Grey gave up their day jobs and combined their love for the ocean and Palm Beach to create the brand. Last month, Kirsten’s baby daughter Indigo got her first taste of the family business, “assisting” on the shoot (she’s so cute I think she probably should have been in it!).

The new collection was shot at Manyara Home in Newport and styled by its owner, Rouba Alamein, a friend of Kirsten’s. “We love working with Rouba because she is such a passionate person and has an incredible eye. She understands the Palm Beach Collection vision and as a retailer herself, knows exactly what we want from the shoot. We have very similar brand aesthetics and feel.”

When a candle’s this good, a girl’s gotta blog it

This is one of those candles. I am lucky enough to get sent a LOT of candles and this was another of those gifts. Nest Fragrances is a New York candle brand. When I Instagramed it (is that a verb now?), an American friend was like “Oh my GOD, I didn’t know you could get that brand here, where can I get one?” in such an excited way I thought I must be in for something good. I was right.

Palm Beach Collection launches online store

Buying candles usually involves sticking your nose in a whole lot of jars and choosing your favourite smell! But if you already know your firm favourite, or you value the convenience of shopping online and delivery to your door, check out the new online store for Palm Beach Collection.

Their new Tahitian Mango candle just landed on my desk (gifted) and it is making me pretty hungry, I have to say…

Sunday Snippets: the best of the week in interiors

  • I shared this competition from the Life InStyle trade fair which I’m judging alongside Mr Jason Grant and Lucy Feagins of The Design Files blog. Have you entered yet?
  • I enjoyed interviewing Melbourne interior designer David Hicks, who just opened an LA office and had some great stuff to share about design.
  • I launched my competition with Wicked Wix to win a year’s worth of candles and the good news is, you still have until noon on Friday to enter. What are you waiting for?!
  • Ex Real Living style director Mr Jason Grant offered Interiors Addict readers an EXCLUSIVE opportunity to join him for a VIP shopping tour around Sydney, visiting his favourite stores with him and learning stylist secrets. There’s still time to book your place for next week.
  • I featured a cool new product that lets you hang plants upside inside. No, I don’t really understand how it works either, but it’s pretty clever!
  • A stunning Art Deco inspired bar opened in Melbourne’s Brunswick on Friday night and I shared some snaps with you beforehand.
  • I reviewed this lovely book New Vintage by stylist Tahn Scoon.
  • I spent Saturday morning at a session with super stylist Megan Morton about putting the love in your home. It was awesome. Read all about it. Her home is in the current issue of Vogue Living. Well worth a look.

This coming week I’m looking forward to attending the Writing about Interiors, Style and Design evening class at Sydney Writers’ Centre. I know I shouldn’t really need it, right? But I think you can always learn something new and it’s great to hear other people’s perspective on things.

What are you doing this coming week? Jen x
