Natural light and your house design, by Joe Snell

Last year, I was approached at a family barbecue by a friend of a friend who had a problem. The problem was she said, that it was incredibly hard getting her family going in the morning and that breakfast was simply a form of extended torment. After much discussion back and forth it did not take long to define the primary problem was most likely a lack of morning sun (by the way, we did discuss the quality of the coffee on offer – it was apparently good — and then again we had to consider the kids too!). It turned out the breakfast area was in the middle of the house without a window or skylight in near sight and, apart from the clock, it was hard to tell what time of day it was.

Morning light is one of the most fundamental, and in my opinion most overlooked, elements of a home and a lifestyle. Now with our knowledge of daylight and our circadian rhythms, it is a no-brainer to ensure that we have some sun on the breakfast table! The morning light will literally wake you and your family up and get you going!

One of Joe’s projects where he has added a skylight in the breakfast area

It is a common issue with many houses I have visited over the years having poorly located breakfast areas. It has always surprised me to see how many families have spent their good lives having breakfast (arguably the most important meal of the day) in dark and depressing spaces.

In fact, when designing a house, well before I worry about the breakfast table styling and accessories (for example what type of bowl to have your cornflakes out of), I make sure that there is going to be some sun on the breakfast table. Imagine how much more of a happy and productive day you and your family are going to have when you have enjoyed the twinkle of some winter sun off your spoon of strawberries! And knowing you are going to have some morning sun, imagine then what styling you could enjoy – is it going to be Scandinavian blonde timber with a navy cloth, or bright daisy yellow napkins against a pure white slat bench? The inspiration for the space and the experience is so much greater because the fundamental is right, and in this case it is the capturing of morning light.

So, how to make immediate change? Well, first of all, find out where the morning sun is coming into your home. Seek it out and adjust your planning; sometimes it means changing rooms to suit a breakfast table and chairs catching the sun. Never be afraid of light as it is always better to take it away with well-placed blinds or screens than not have it at all – particularly in winter.

Once you have located the morning sun in your home, freshen up the space with lighter and brighter colours to reflect the light and make it a morning place – whites, yellows, light coloured timbers – it does not have to be the whole room – it can just be the breakfast area. Once you have brightened the space consider a large mirror. They can be a great addition if placed in such a way to reflect the outside in – whether it is a view, the garden, a tree or even the sky. Remember that the early morning light is quite horizontal, particularly in winter, so a mirror can literally bring the morning into a space and all the beautiful light reflections are an added bonus.

In terms of a renovation, do all of the above and literally design around the morning light – include windows and skylights that are designed to capture and funnel light into your breakfast space. Good quality skylights these days are so much more available and better priced than in the past. Some even include electric sun blinds and automatically close when they sense rain. Give priority to your place of breakfast in your design so that it is located on the edge of your house, preferably near an outdoor area, so on those perfect mornings you can easily spill outside. Consider as well the convenience of its location as for many of us, breakfast can be a bit of a rush.

At the start of the day, there is nothing more important than making sure that you get your family’s body clocks and appetites going with some sun on your breakfast table. With some clever design and planning, invite that morning to breakfast!

Interiors Addict at home: our new outdoor relaxing space

This post is sponsored by IKEA

My new look deck, complete with lounging AND dining areas

We recently moved into our first house in Sydney. While the huge deck that runs the length of said house seemed fantastic at first, having come from an apartment with a small, square balcony, we didn’t have much to fill it. Our Weber Baby Q still looks very lost and sorry for itself! We rushed out and bought a cheap and large dining solution (who has money when they’ve just moved, right?) at IKEA which gave us a taste of the range and value on offer. We opted for two lots of the ASKHOLMEN table and four chairs ($149 each) and put them together, which gave us a long, solid timber dining set for eight for less than $300! I know!

But our massive deck (first world problems) still looked empty and we really wanted a nice, cosy, outdoor-room type, relaxing space for morning coffees and lazy Sundays with friends. I wanted to be able to walk outside the back door and slump into something comfy on a nice afternoon. So when IKEA offered to help me out with some furniture, I couldn’t refuse.

I started by looking online for inspiration and quickly settled on the ARHOLMA modular lounges which have a million options, from a neat two-seater which would fit a balcony (and comes in two pieces so could actually get up stairs!) to something, well, as big as you like. You basically buy units of it, and corners, and make an L-shape, U-shape, or just a regular lounge shape from two seats and up. We went for a two-seater and a slightly larger four-seater L-shape to sit opposite it for a nice social setting. We mixed things up a bit by using a much treasured vintage, marble-topped coffee table bought on eBay years ago (which doesn’t work in our new lounge room indoors) and I really love how it looks. It cost me $60 so I’m not too precious about how it fares outside and it kind of adds to its character!

Now I love a spot of reading outside on a balmy evening!

There is a matching coffee table available for ARHOLMA however. Well, it’s actually a unit which can be the L part of an L-shape lounge or you can buy the glass top and make it a table. Again, flexibility wins!

I love neutrals outside. Let nature do the talking and make the colour, I say. How about you? If you’re the same as me, Into the Fold have some fab monochrome outdoor cushions.

When you think about it, it makes sense that IKEA, with their European heritage, design plenty of outdoor furniture for small spaces and balconies. Although we’re definitely a nation of outdoor entertainers in Australia, it can be hard to find solutions for tighter spaces and there are no shortage of apartment dwellers, alongside those lucky enough to have a spacious back yard. IKEA has both covered.

I really love this IKEA solution for small balconies

Amanda Grant, IKEA’s sales leader for outdoor furniture, says alongside its European background, one of the brand’s biggest advantages when it comes to outdoor furniture is its vast experience in indoor furniture. “We have an amazing range around different style preferences and price points, from basic modern to more traditional, to suit different lifestyles and wallets.” There are plenty of larger, more substantial dining and lounging solutions if that’s what you’re after.

IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!
IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!

There’s a core range of outdoor available at IKEA year-round and then extra things are introduced around summer time. But from this year, for the first time, there’ll be new ranges added in July/August as well as February, which makes sense considering Australians only really stay inside for about two or three months of the year!

Amanda says while their outdoor dining range is already well known, they hope customers will come to look at them as an option for great lounging options as well.

Personally, I think the ARHOLMA is great value ( a three-seater sofa is just $412 for example) and so flexible. It’s good to know we can change it around at a later date or add to it if we move house etc. I’ll be honest with you, it is not easy to put together and requires serious patience (lucky husband and brother-in-law got this job!) but it does all go together in the end, no missing parts, just fiddly! And that, in my opinion, is the price you pay for such good value. You can’t have it all! They do offer a paid for assembly service or I’d suggest trying Airtasker for someone to do the job for you as an alternative.

We also picked the cute timber ASKHOLMEN (tying in with our existing dining set) table ($39) and two chairs ($30 each) for a shady spot under a tree at the bottom of the garden beyond the deck.

And there are many other finishing touches available for your yard, deck or balcony too, from solar and LED lighting to hardy outdoor plants to sun shades (parasols and gazebos), planter boxes and lanterns.

Something you might want to check out is the great value instant flooring, perfect for disguising an ugly old concrete balcony floor in minutes!

We’re so happy with our new chillout area and feel we’ve gained a new outdoor room and some extra livable space. And while we still need a bigger barbecue, we’ll get there eventually!

Next stop: get tired-looking deck stained! The shame…

Until TOMORROW (22 January 2015) only, if you’re an IKEA Family member (it’s free to join) get a $50 voucher for every $250 you spend on outdoor lounging furniture. See website for terms and conditions.

Update your living/dining for Spring without breaking the bank

Sponsored by Freedom

We spoke to Freedom homewares buyer Korryn Bentley about the latest Spring trends and how to incorporate them into your home without breaking the bank.

Sunseeker Vignette Option

“There’s a really strong move toward all things pastel this Spring, we can’t get enough! But we’re also seeing some chalky hues in citrus tones with terracotta as a hero colour. This can be a really sophisticated colour palette when combined with metallic coppers which are really hot this season,” Korryn says.

In terms of bringing these trends into your home, Korryn suggests a simple, easy and fun way is with a collection of vessels or vases. “These new pieces can look great mixed back with some vintage pieces, don’t be afraid to mix and match. There’s no hard and fast rule, but try and keep it tonal. Most interior upholstery, fabric or leather are fairly neutral in colour, so a cluster of vessels in a palette of chalky hues can easily work in with this look.”

Vases

If you were going to invest in one large key piece from Freedom, Korryn recommends, without a doubt, the Manhattan sofa in Loft Ecru. “I love the oversized proportions, the sleek contemporary legs, not to mention the level of comfort is out of this world. I could easily spend my summer sprawled on that with a cocktail and good book. Bring it on!”

One tricky issue for many readers is making your open plan living and dining spaces work together. Korryn still suggests creating obvious living and dining zones to prevent the space becoming confusing. “The best way of doing this is with floor rugs, this really helps bring structure to your room and visually ties the whole space together. You can play with a pop of colour that’s repeated in the rug, it creates real harmony in an open plan, while defining the space.”

Bright Rugs

When it comes to making a statement when entertaining at home this Spring, Korryn loves a brightly dressed table with fresh flowers and colourful napery. “My dinnerware is all white, so I get to play with lots of interesting textures and patterns in napery and tend to incorporate jute string somehow, I love jute string!

“Spring is one of my favourite times of the year. I love fresh bed linen that’s been drying in the sun, throwing the windows open at home and pulling back my blockout curtains. Spring is all about sheer curtains on the windows and fresh flowers in every nook of the home for me, and that gentle scent of jasmine blowing through.”

Korryn’s top four updates from Freedom’s Spring range for under $50

  • Serena Vessel 23.5cm: The dusty hue with the graphic stripe, I just love this look.
  • Bukhara Cushion: Again the way those dusty, earthy tones play together with the stitching, it’s a tactile, textural gem.
  • Arrow Basket 46cm: Why should storage be dull? The Arrow basket is practical and pretty!
  • Zedd Cactus Orange 32cm: Somebody pass me a Margarita, these cactus pieces bring a fun Mexican feel to a space, sans the prickles.

All the rooms from The Block living/dining reveals

The thing about being out of Australia now is that I can’t watch The Block for the rest of the series! But before you all start shouting “first world problems!” at me, don’t worry, I’m relying on my sources to continue to bring you the weekly Monday wrap-up of every room reveal. It’s probably about time I admitted I was lucky enough to have a tour of The Block a few weeks back. And editorial assistant Olivia Shead gets to check it out tomorrow night, so look out for her social media pictures and a blog post to come later this week.

So here we go. Last night’s winners were, for the first time, Steve and Chantelle. At the time of writing, I’d not had a chance to catch up on the reaction to their win. What did you think? If I’d been judging though, I’d definitely have picked Alisa and Lysandra. But I wasn’t, so hey…

I’ve made no secret of my twins favouritism but I defy anyone not to see what I’m talking about after last night’s living/dining reveal. Their apartment is HOT. I want to move right in. Not that the other couples aren’t doing some great things too (I like Brad and Dale’s kitchen more than most and Kyal and Kara’s bathroom was brilliant) but Alisa and Lysandra, in my opinion, have the most consistently strong look, week after week (hanging bathroom moss aside). And their living/dining area is not only stylish and texture-tastic, but so practical and functional with its separate dining, desk nook and generous living area. Top marks from me!

Set a pretty table with Freedom

Freedom have done good with their latest range of tableware for Summer.

Sorrento_Seafoam_Range_Shot_CAS_tif_87099-processed

It really does make it more fun to set the table or have friends over when you have something a little more special than plain white plates (yes, like me, but I’m hoping to recitfy that thanks to my wedding registry, old school style). “White crockery will always have a place in the home, but our new collection of tabletop brings life to the dinner table. It bursts with colour and personality to make mealtime fun. With a nod to the 50s when bright colour shook up interiors, it’s playful , stylish and affordable,” said homewares buyer Vanessa Rothery.

Mix and match with new Noritake Colourwave dinnerware

I’ve looked at a lot of plates recently while trying to finalise our wedding registry! Do you go for something plain and simple that won’t date, or be brave with something a little more statement or fun? I still don’t know to be honest! I’m thinking grey. This new Noritake Colourwave range is a nice balance and you could mix and match or stick to one colour.

The Japanese brand have reinvented their traditional stoneware with the addition of turquoise and apple green (pictured), charcoal grey and raspberry. It’s all super robust, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe.

Preview of the new IKEA Stockholm collection

It’s a little way off yet, but IKEA Australia will launch STOCKHOLM, a new collection of products with a focus on living, dining and sleeping solutions, in August.

Ikea stockholm room setting

STOCKHOLM is designed to add a warm and homey feeling through design that embodies both quality and comfort. Organic colour schemes are inspired by nature, like the lush greens and browns of fertile country fields. Organic shapes are paired with straight lines, adding a modern and distinctly Scandinavian touch. Materials like natural walnut woods run through most of the collection, as well as mouth-blown glass, bone china and warm textiles. The result is both contemporary and classic.

IKEA wedding table styling challenge

I’m no stylist. I think we all know that…

But when Ikea Australia asked me to take part in its wedding table styling challenge, as a bride-to-be, I thought it sounded like a lot of fun! And it was.

ikeaThe challenge was to create any kind of wedding table setting using nothing but what you can buy in Ikea, apart from large ticket items like the table itself, for under $500. And above is the result, my very pink and floral dessert station. I know it isn’t very good but hey, you can’t take yourself too seriously! Everything there, edibles aside, is from Ikea, right down to the faux flowers (really not that bad, don’t you think?), the frames, the napkins, the table covering, all of it. Tempting as it was to get one of my many stylists friends to do it for me, I think you can probably tell I didn’t!
