Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best advice they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Chloe Brookman, one half of kids furniture business, Olli Ella.
1. What is your favourite cafe?
Tigermottle in Paddington. Killer coffee, delicious breakfast (my favourite meal) and nestled amongst gorgeous Paddington terraces. It’s also walking distance from our home!
2. What is your favourite holiday destination?
Costa Rica. Although last time we went there we chose a little eco lodge on a beach called Playa Nicuesa, which the locals lovingly refer to as Mosquito Beach! We didn’t find that out until we were actually there unfortunately.
Costa Rica I love for the food, the proximity to both beaches and rainforests and the people. It’s an untouched paradise.
3. What three people would be at your perfect dinner party?
Oscar Wilde, Stevie Wonder and Stephen Hawking.
4. What’s your go-to recipe?
Homemade spinach pesto pasta. It’s delish (the whole family loves it) and it’s the only way I can get my kiddies to eat greens without some serious molecular gastronomy!
5. Who is your favourite musician?
Billy Bragg for his folky melodies that you can sing along to at the top of your lungs, driving with the windows open and the kids covering their ears in the back.

We’ve seen these popping up everywhere lately, and not just on little ones’ beds! It’s pretty hard to do something new with cushions, but these really stand out. I have one on my own wishlist (for my room, not Sebastian’s nursery!)!
You may have seen this Swedish fella’s apple and tomato friends in all the coolest nurseries too. A very affordable way to get art on your kids’ walls. A3 size so will fit standard frames.
As rockers go, this one is seriously design savvy and won’t look out of place in the stylish or minimalist interiors! Sebastian was very lucky to have been given one of these by some lovely friends who knew I might not love all the primary colours that come with parenthood! It starts off life as a rocker chair and later, when they’re older, you attach the animal (is it a sheep, is it a horse?!) and it becomes a fun toy.
Just like in grown up interiors, books are a great way to add colour and interest to a room. Even better, with this perspex bookshelf, your child can see the covers of their books and will be able to easily pick out which they want. Makes reading even more appealing!
If not the Declan, then most Aussie first-time mums have one of Australian brand Incy Interiors’ gorgeous cots on their wishlist. Better still, most of their furniture comes with the option to have it custom coloured (pretty much any Dulux shade) to perfectly match your scheme. No subtle neutrals here (unless you really want them, of course)!
It’s official: every kid’s room needs a teepee these days! Great for a reading corner or a place for imaginative play and they look great too. there are many on the market now but we love this Klea Baby one because of its simple aesthetic which will blend in with any room scheme and can be accessorised to your heart’s content in any style.
Is there anything more exciting about sharing a room with your sibling than the prospect of bunkbeds?! Ever since I got my hot little hands on Kip & Co’s Autumn Winter 2015 HIBERNATE lookbook, I’ve been counting down the days until I could share it all with you; and I’ve got to say, you will not be disappointed!
“I know you can’t have a favourite child but we seriously love this range so much it might just be our favourite yet,” explains Kip & Co co-founder Alex van der Sluys. “I think that’s partly because we are so excited with all our new categories! We have done our first foray into lounge and sleepwear for adults and kids, bringing our bold, signature prints to KIP BODY; we’ve also extended our KIP TINY range with baby nap wraps, swanky blankys and play mats; our rugs are back with a vengeance; and we’ve got new corduroy bedding and beanbags!”
As always, HIBERNATE, which is available to pre-order from today, is not about following trends. Inspired by the everyday — friends, family and the world around us — Alex and co-owners Hayley Pannekoecke and Kate Heppell have a list of print and product ideas so long, they think they’d have enough to last them 40 years!
However, lucky for us, they’ve managed to fit a fair few of them into this collection. “We’ve gone all out with our AW15 range because if we’ve got to stay indoors all winter, we’re about making that as fun an experience as possible! AW15 is our most comprehensive to date, with a big emphasis on bold prints, warm wintery textures, design edge and comfort.”
Designing bedding oh so well, this season the girls decided to launch lounge and sleepwear too, believing there was a real gap in the market for PJs that are comfortable and cool. “We spent ages finding the right fabric — it’s crazy soft, 100% cotton jersey, so most importantly it feels great. With the addition of our signature Kip & Co prints and bold colours, we’ve created something really unique that we hope people will love as much as we do!”
Growing their TINY range was also a natural progression, thanks to their cot sheets being received extremely well last year. “That response really confirmed for us what we already knew: that there is a really big appetite out there for baby gear that has an edgy designer element to it. It doesn’t need to be all white, pink or blue! So by popular demand, we’ve expanded into 100% bamboo nap wraps to swaddle your little tikes, 100% bamboo swanky blankys and play mats, in addition to our expanded cot sheet range!”
With such an extensive collection it’s hard to pick a favourite, so rather than decide, I asked Alex to! “I actually am loving the rugs – they’re so poppy, textural and fun. I think it’s so hard to find an affordable designer blanket these days and I am really chuffed that we have been able to offer something so special. I’ve already marked one down for me!”
With a motto to create products for: “bubs with serious spunk!” Karrie-Anne Vieceli of KwithHeart offers a range of quality wares including organic jersey swaddle blankets, organic muslin wraps, cot sheet sets, bibs, pillowcases and tees.
Launched last year, shortly after having her first child, KwithHeart was born out of a desire to find something a bit different to the traditional baby colours and patterns. “There were very limited options around at the time I was pregnant,” explains Karrie-Anne. “So I decided to make them instead! I remember telling friends I was having a black and white nursery and their response was: “What the?!”. However the style turned out to be popular and it fit well with the other designs I had planned for my own bub. Friends started asking about buying my designs and as I love making and creating, I thought I’d share the love and launch KwithHeart.”
Balancing her creative side with her ‘real’ day job in the corporate world, Karrie-Anne loves the opportunity to work in two very different professions. Designing and making all the products herself, she enjoys the art of creating, even if it means juggling two jobs and a toddler! “KwithHeart is essentially me! Though I recently employed the services of a local sewing expert, as this allows me more time to do the things I am more passionate about. Of course it really wouldn’t be possible without the support from my husband, family and friends.”
With an ethos to make every product with absolute heart, Karrie-Anne does everything from the initial designs to distribution. “My swaddle blankets, wraps, bibs and cot sheet sets are hand stamped using lino block stamps. I design and hand carve the stamps myself, then I hand-paint them with non-toxic, water-based ink, and heat set each piece. Like most creatives, I have also branched out to do a few different things along the way, with hand painted custom pillowcases being one of them.”
With every item being gift-wrapped, with optional handmade gift cards, Karrie-Anne hopes to make buying gifts that much easier. With a style that is bold, makes a statement and packs a punch, KwithHeart wares are a perfect addition to any kid’s room.
Having your first baby can be pretty overwhelming. Trust me, I know! At six months pregnant, I am starting to reach the slightly panicky ‘Have I got everything? I have no idea what I’m doing!’ stage! Although well-meaning people will tell you all your baby needs is milk and love, it’s a lovely sentiment that’s not strictly true (hello, nappies?!). But I was really excited to discover that BIG W has you covered for pretty much everything, from packing your hospital bag all the way through to decorating the nursery!
BIG W is one of those shops I tended to visit for slightly more random items like Sodastream gas cylinders or door stops. I really had no idea how much baby-related stuff they also sell, but got very excited when Damian and I wandered through their baby section last week. For example, maternity nightie for nursing after you have the baby? Tick! One more thing for the hospital bag (Emerson Maternity have maternity bras and singlets too). And great clothes for the baby of course (we couldn’t resist a few outfits) that are fantastic value for those fast-growing little bodies (including Peter Morrisey Baby). Heaps!
If you’re looking to deck out your nursery without spending a fortune (and provided everything is safe and functional I see absolutely no issue with that!), then you can get your crib, change table and more at BIG W too. As an interior stylist for little people, Mel Spurling of Hello Little Birdie always encourages her clients to get their kids involved. “When I first meet a client I encourage them to bring their children, as it is a great way to gauge their little personalities and incorporate a little of them into their newly designed bedroom. In fact, you could argue that the little person is my client and they have to bring their parents!”
Designing both nurseries and kids rooms, Mel is a lover of anything that is unique and original and pushes the boundaries. With an aim to design rooms that last a lifetime (or at least past the toddler years!) she believes creative thinking combined with clever shopping, can lead to rooms rich in detail and cheap to pull together. “It is definitely possible to put together a gorgeous nursery, which will work for many years to come. DIY should not be ignored; not everything has to have a dollar sign on it. You should always start with paint or wall decals; a new colour creates a whole new look. That means that you can spend the majority of your budget on furniture that can grow with your child, such as a high-quality dresser or side table, and save on items that they will quickly outgrow.”
Mel also recommends places like eBay, Gumtree and garage sales for finding those cheap but good quality finds. “Take an outdated or damaged piece of furniture, give it a fresh coat of paint and all of a sudden you’ve given it a whole new life. You can finish off your entire new look by accessorising your room with inexpensive wall art. Try framing your little birdie’s artwork, or an image from a book, magazine or even greeting card!”
Originally working in IT as a business analyst (“I am part geek too!”), Mel’s love for interior design began as a young child when she shared a room with her grandmother and longed for a room of her own. “As a little girl, I’d spend endless hours imagining what my room would look like if I had my own little space. By the time I had grown up and had my very first baby, I swore she would have the most whimsical, stylish and dreamy room. One like no other! But once I started looking into children’s decor, I found that most items were boring at best, and horrible at worst. That’s when I realised that I could put all of my skills and experience together to start creating wonderful, imaginative and fun spaces for little people.”
With both online and on-site services, Mel designs for both boys and girls and in her opinion there are some key differences to remember: “We all know boys are boisterous and love to create clutter. Bearing this in mind, a boy’s room can’t go without storage. For boys, fresh white bedroom walls set a neutral backdrop that pair perfectly with any decorating style as tastes change. Add some bold prints and you are well on your way!”
And for girls? “Girl’s rooms are timeless and I always find decorating them with wallpaper will last for many years. We all know little girls like to call themselves little ladies, so I love creating rooms which incorporate on-trend furniture to give the room a more mature look. Once the foundations are set, adding a bunch of accessories and toys to the room, makes it come to life. I love adding lots of layers; quilts, throws and cushions.”

“What I like most about designing for kids is that there are no rules,” explains Inga Rodd, founder of new bedding brand, Goosebumps. “Kids love fun and colour and that is what Goosebumps is all about!”
Looking at her debut range, It’s A Jungle Out There, it’s clear to see that fun and colour are at the forefront of Inga’s designs. Vibrant, bold and packing a punch, all products are unisex, reversible and sold as separates, an important decision that allows for the kids to become the designers. “I wanted to create a fun bedroom experience for kids where they could mix and match any pieces to create their own style, individuality and personality,” says Inga. “It’s about breaking all the rules and mixing and switching it up to create a wild and wonderful experience for your little monkeys.”
Having kids herself, Inga has spent the last three years staying at home looking after her twin boys. Yet with a background in retail, wholesale and fashion and a keen eye for design and colour, her mind soon began ticking, with the idea of Goosebumps reaching fruition earlier this year.
Now with her Spring/Summer debut range receiving such great reviews, Inga has gone straight back to creating, having just completed designing her next collection, which excitingly will also include an adults range. “Hopefully the big people will now get a chance to play with colour in their bedrooms,” explains Inga. “We’ve had such a great response from all our customers that it felt like a natural progression to move into adults bedding.”
With a release date set for early next year, the future looks bright for Goosebumps and I can’t wait to get a first glimpse of the adults range. Watch this space!
Kip & Co designers Hayley, Kate and Alex have brought their signature bright, bold colourways and prints to the nursery, giving in to the demand they’ve experienced since launching their much loved bedding label.
The first Kip & Co TINY collection is comprised of six designs in fitted cot sheets and three baby blankets. Three of the sheet sets feature a print collaboration with super cool kidswear label Munster Kids: Munster Leopard, Munster Mash and Munster Camo.
“We wanted to be challenge what traditional ‘baby bedding’ looked like,” the girls said. “Pastels and whites have dominated this market for such a long time and we felt that if older kids were really into their bright bedding, then we couldn’t see a reason why vibrant colours and cool prints wouldn’t work in a nursery as well.”

Designing a tween bedroom can be hard. Having a 12 year-old sister myself, I’m well aware of the need for things not to be babyish. Because let’s be honest, no one wants to be on the receiving end of that scrunched up nose, ‘What were you thinking?’ expression when you bring them home something new!
