Australian hand-drawn textiles inspired by nature & Picasso

“I love being in the outdoors, and I think that interiors need to feel connected to the outside world, so I want to bring nature in,” says Studio Onethirty designer Sarah Kalidis of her bold, organic aesthetic. An interior designer by trade, Sarah worked in the design industry for a decade before the birth of her daughter prompted a change in career direction.

A selection of Studio Onethirty fabrics and cushions

“I have always been interested in drawing and textural elements, and I have a love for all things handmade. After having my little girl in 2015, I decided to follow my creative passion and turn my love of design into a range of textiles, homewares and furniture, all made in Australia,” says Sarah who cites Modernist design and Picasso as strong influences. “I have always loved the free and expressive work of Pablo Picasso, and he has certainly influenced this current collection with the likes of Maya, Paloma and Claude.”

Sydney-based, Sarah’s current (and debut!) collection was created during the spring of 2016. “Summer was just in sight. I spent many days immersed in the sunshine and the outdoors – nature’s beautiful colours certainly influenced my paintings and drawings. The warmer months are all about freeness and rebirth, with bright colours adorning the natural landscape and fashion too!” says Sarah.

Sarah Kalidis

With respect to her design process, Sarah gets right back to basics before conceptualising each piece. “Each one of my textile designs are based on my original drawings. I love watching the transition from pencil to paper, through to upholstery fabric for furniture,” says Sarah.

All of Sarah’s designs start as hand-drawn illustrations

The designer’s furniture pieces are strongly influenced by mid-century design, the Alpha Terrazzo furniture range a highlight. “It’s a unique range of concrete furniture that can be customised to suit many applications. I have a lot of fun sourcing the beautiful marble and limestone that is used for the extra-large aggregate, and each piece is a one-off beauty!”

The Alpha Terrazzo stool

“I have a few other favourite pieces. The Katse Bench, which is beautifully crafted out of American Walnut and paired with Maya seat cushions, is such a fun piece and is influenced by mid-century design and some of my favourite colours. Its name ‘Katse’ means sit in Greek, which is perfect!” says Sarah.

Local, affordable furniture without delusions of grandeur!

Challenging the misconception that locally made furniture is out of reach of most people, Melbourne company Crafter produces a gorgeous range of custom-made pieces in collaboration with local Melbourne designers, craftspeople and artists – all with affordable price tags to boot.

Crafter showroom

“Our aim is to develop collaborations that see an end to the churn of ‘fast furniture’ and see a return to purchasing locally-made sustainable products that don’t cost the earth and are made to last. No pretence, delusions of grandeur, or hype. I like to call it honest furniture,” says Crafter director Adrian Galiazzo.

Crafter showroom

Having spent close to 20 years in the furniture business, sourcing and developing products for some of Australia’s largest retail chains, Adrian grew tired of the homogenisation he increasingly saw. “Just like McDonald’s can fill the spot on the odd occasion, cheaply made mass-produced furniture has its place in society, however we’ve lost the balance between supply and demand. The growth of big box retail chains have slowly but surely cheapened and homogenised the options, to the point where you could travel across the city and visit 20 furniture shopping centres and find the same 20 retailers with exactly the same product. Thankfully now more people are actively seeking out alternatives,” says Adrian.

Huxley armchair

But what of the many people who would like to purchase locally made furniture, but feel they can’t afford it? “There’s a misconception that Australian made products are far more expensive than imports. It all depends on the materials, design and size that you want,” says Adrian who, rather impressively, sells a solid Victorian Ash timber table (1800mm x 900mm) for $1500 and a two-seat sofa starting from $1300. “These pieces are made right here in Melbourne and with quality standards that would more than likely exceed those of imports. Plus, if the Australian dollar continues to fall against the US currency as predicted, we’ll start to see the price of imported products rise even further,” says Adrian – a situation that will make buying locally even more attractive.

Hendrix sofa

Buying locally and quality issues aside, it’s the customisation options that Crafter offer that are truly exciting. “Our furniture has no restrictions and I think that will be key to our success. If you want it bigger, smaller or in a shade of pink, it’s no problem. If you’re into Australian recycled/reclaimed timbers that’s fine, we can make product such as cabinetry from those materials. If you need a durable melamine veneer we can produce in that. We’re not just mid-century fanatics, nor are we fixated on recycled timber. Plus, we work with some of the best local industrial designers,” says Adrian who cites lighting designer Ilan El, stylist Debra Bowen and ceramicists Tracey Muirhead and Vanessa Lucas as collaborators.

Vanguard 3-door buffet

In what is a true customisation service, customers don’t just have the choice of three sizes, colours or fabrics. “Our sofas can be any width, height and depth you need them to be, any configuration, any covering whether it be fabric or leather, any arm thickness and shape, and any feel,” says Adrian.

Crafter showroom

Crafter can also make tables to custom specifications – the size, stain, painted finish and timber species are all up to you. “And if you have a specific design you want made, we can do that as well,” says Adrian.

Win an upholstered bedhead in your choice of shape and fabric

When I heard Fantastic furniture were offering custom upholstered bedheads, in a wide range of fabrics and a choice of three designs, all for under $200 and made right here in Australia, I thought they had to be seen to be believed! I mean, that’s crazy money, right?!

The Classic design
The Classic design

So they let me see for myself and I couldn’t be more impressed with mine in my bedroom! I went for the modern and simple Sleek design in Premium Marcy Grey (RRP $199). Many of you commented on it in my recent bedroom makeover pictures.

The quality is great, it’s comfortable to sit up against (I have been known to use my laptop in bed now and again…) and it really does not look like it would cost less than $200! So I’m really excited to share with you that treating yourself to a custom hero piece for your bedroom is now within everyone’s reach!

Screen-Shot-2016-02-26-at-10.51.24-AM-768x512

Ordering online is a great experience too. You can order up to five free fabric samples (there are 100-plus to choose from, patterned and plain, standard and premium) to be sent to you so you can be sure you’re ordering the right colour and fabric for your room (I’d really recommend this). But you can also see a mock-up online of what your choice of design and fabric might look like.

You can expect to wait 4-to-6 weeks for your order and delivery is $75. If you don’t already have them, brackets to attach it to your ensemble bed will set you back an extra $35. The only downside is that they are currently only available in queen size.

Discover Leÿer’s surf-inspired furniture + discount code!

The creation of husband and wife team, Rebecca and Damo Leijer, the Leÿer timber furniture company produces beautiful yet functional pieces inspired by their hometown of Victoria’s Torquay. With an emphasis on smooth lines, gentle curves and light timber, the duo’s first collection is small but beautifully formed and includes seven bedroom and living room pieces.

8 LEYER_BY_HAILSANDSHINE-14

Half-moon bedhead

A carpenter by trade, the business was born after Damo made a few pieces for his home and friends started commissioning pieces. “We realised there was a gap in the market for simply designed, locally made, and reasonably priced furniture for the home,” says Damo, who designs and hand makes the beautiful pieces to order in Victorian Ash hardwood. “I get constant inspiration from the beauty around me as well as my passions – surfing, skating and my two young daughters.”

Stall side table

The surf town Torquay figures heavily in the design process. The Beater coffee table was inspired by the gentle lines of their daughter’s first surfboard and, like all their pieces, it underwent real-life testing in their home before being added to the range. “The Stall side table is also inspired by surfing — when you need to just stall and wait for the best line to take. The design of these tables was no different as it took a few attempts but we got there in the end!”

“We still have more pieces to add to this range. We have had a lot of requests for a dining table so that will be included very soon as well as some other pieces including a TV unit and another coffee table. Our Stall tables have been an early big hit and so we will look to expand on their popularity in the next range,” says Rebecca.

Versatile boxes

The brand’s launch campaign saw them join forces with Kip & Co to help realise the beauty of their oiled timber pieces in a real life home. “I wanted to show how our furniture pieces could look in a normal home setting, not a studio or a heavily styled photoshoot. This is key to our design aesthetic and the very heart of our brand mission at Leÿer as simplicity is our thing,” says Rebecca.

New signature scent and hand sanitiser from Bondi Wash

If you’re anything like me, you love beautifully scented personal hygiene products, but cringe when you flip them over only to find Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulphate staring back at you amongst the rest of the dreadfully long list of dubious ingredients.

10296026_738552466250465_5013302994338991875_o

Luckily for us, Australian made and owned Bondi Wash is different. And they’ve released a new hand sanitiser (Jen’s tried it and it’s now a staple in Sebastian’s nursery for between nappy changes!) and signature scent just in time for the warmer seasons.

Feb 2015Available in Tasmanian Pepper & Lavender, Sydney Peppermint & Rosemary, and Lemon Tea Tree & Mandarin, the antibacterial hand spray kills 99.9% of germs and contains only a smidgen of alcohol. It’s not a gel (gel sanitisers can be pretty sticky and gross) and has a unique spray function, which means it can also be used on hard surfaces.

Soap Bar FSW 100_LoThe limited edition Fragonia & Sandalwood is an antibacterial bush oil with delicate floral notes, blended with oils such as ginger and patchouli for a calming, natural scent. It comes in a hand wash, mist spray and 100g mini soap bar.

11999553_738990279540017_2536342235154528835_o

These products not only smell great, but they’re also plant-based, non-toxic, biodegradable, free from nasty ingredients, and even come in décor-worthy bottles. Bondi Wash, you’re spoiling us.

Other products include a body wash, mist spray, bench spray and there’s even a range for dogs. Check them out online.

NOMI: a new concept in customisable Australian, timber, flatpack furniture. No tools required!

NOMI is an exciting new concept in Australian designed and made furniture. Designed by you online, made of timber, with customisable colours and other options, delivered to you (flatpacked) free and (possibly the best bit) no tools required for assembly. Too good to be true?!

nomi Time Table

Sydney locals Michael Grassi, Henry Gresson and Tomek Archer have collaborated to launch the new concept. By combining online technology, product design and efficient manufacturing processes, their aim is to provide affordable and accessible designer furniture that can be customised online. NOMI launched at the end of last month.

Award winning designer Tomek, of Tomahawk Studios, has created the range with simplicity at its core. Clean lines and unassuming proportions make NOMI suitable for the home or office. “The collection has been conceived as a range of basics, informed by a series of studies into fundamental furniture types,” says Tomek. “Constructed from solid timber, the adaptable series of chairs, tables and storage each have timeless and enduring qualities that are equally suited to blending in or standing out, depending on the customiser’s efforts.”

nomi Time Coffee Table

Co-founder Michael adds: “We wanted to offer something special and unique, something that hadn’t been seen in the furniture space before. Our vision was to provide affordable designer furniture and create a place where people could interact with our products in new and exciting ways.”

This short video explains how it works…
