Kitchen design 101 with Block judge Shaynna Blaze

Given the elevated status of the kitchen within the home, careful planning should go into its design with aesthetics and functionality both key. We caught up with interior designer Shaynna Blaze recently, who revealed a bunch of super useful kitchen design tips.

unspecified copy

Define its purpose
“The configuration and space required depends on the different types of functions in the kitchen other than just cooking. Will it be used as a seating area at the bench or a place for kids to do homework? Is it part of a full open plan living space?” asks Shaynna. Frequency and style of entertaining is another big consideration, as is the style of pantry (do you have the space for a full butler’s kitchen?) and whether or not you need to accommodate laundry appliances too.

Play with design
While most people play it safe and stick to neutrals when it comes to their kitchen design, Shaynna favours a more adventurous approach. “Try to step outside your comfort zone in small stages by incorporating colour in features like the splashback, bespoke handles and a different colour in the island bench to the main cabinetry of the kitchen,” says Shaynna.

unspecified-3

Functionality is key
While design elements are important (and fun!), functionality is absolutely crucial. “The kitchen layout must be practical. Allow for the most commonly used appliances – fridge, sink and oven – to be placed in the ‘work triangle’ so that moving between them all is only a couple of steps away,” says Shaynna who favours a concealed waste management system. “A pull out bin hidden in the cabinetry keeps your kitchen design sleek and keeps the mess out of sight,” she says.

Storage
“One of the biggest mistakes you can make when designing a new kitchen is not planning for enough storage space,” says Shaynna. “Install deep drawers for easy access to pots, pans and bowls, and slimmer drawers for all your cutlery, cups and plates, leaving the larger cupboard doors for all your pantry needs,” says Shaynna who is a big fan of overhead cupboards and pull-out corner solutions too.

Take advantage of natural light
Whether it’s windows or a skylight, maximise natural lighting by keeping window coverings to a minimum – this will help create the illusion of space and works well with open-plan living. “If privacy is an issue, opt for a translucent window shade that still allows light in,” says Shaynna.

The kitchen sink
“When it comes to your kitchen sink, look at styles that have accessories like chopping boards, drainage trays and stainless covers. These help create extra bench space in small areas and the covers let you hide the mess when you are more interested in entertaining,” says Shaynna.

The Block week 3 room reveals: master bathrooms

There was a lot to love about last night’s bathroom reveals, if you ask me. I wrongly assumed Julia and Sasha would win but they were knocked into second place by Dan and Carleen, who took out first place by just half a point. And, on reflection, while I really loved both their rooms, Dan and Carleen’s was certainly more true to the Art Deco period while cleverly feeling modern and on trend too. The top two bathrooms really were both beautiful.

Anyway, here’s a recap of the scoring and what the judges had to say…

Karlie and Will: 3rd place and 27 points

h1_r3_bathroom_will_karlie-54

Last week’s winners continued to impress the judges this week with their sophisticated look, perhaps even more so because they’re only 25. Shaynna said the room was glamorous and she felt good in it.

Neale love the combination of the paneling (actually a money-saving measure) and the tiles and the simplicity of the colour palette. Darren also thought the panelling was a great idea.

Shaynna and Neale both loved the prints which referenced Melbourne in the era.

h1_r3_bathroom_will_karlie-29

Darren was “completely, madly in love with” the basins and the light above the vanity was Shaynna’s favourite thing. She said: “It feels young and modern but also very sophisticated. These kids have style!”

Our pick: Wood Melbourne brass spout

Dan and Carleen: first place and 29 points

h2_r3_bathroom_dan_carleen-12

After some shocking feedback (and some would say a shocking room) last week, Dan and Carleen certainly managed to bounce back and show everyone what they were capable of. I personally loved it and agreed with everything the judges had to say. Neale was wowed and said the couple were definitely back in the game (don’t you love it when this happens on The Block?) and that it had such a great sense of period.

Shaynna said the vanity was stunning and the basin, gorgeous. Darren said it delivered exactly what they were probably hoping to deliver in week one; it had all the trend notes and cleverly, still delivered something of a bygone era.

h2_r3_bathroom_dan_carleen-28

Neale was particularly pleased to see the pared back and simple styling and Darren called their look new traditional, reminiscent of trends he’d seen from Milan. They did get knocked for having their light switches outside however.

Our pick: Geology marble wall hook

Andy and Ben: fourth place and 19.5 points

h3_r3_bathroom_andy_ben-19

Andy and Ben seriously stepped up their game this week and I thought they produced a very good bathroom, if not my style. “These boys are growing before our eyes,” said Shaynna. Neale said the artwork was a touch of genius.

h3_r3_bathroom_andy_ben-26

All the judges felt that visually, everything was spot on. But their decision (or mistake) in not including a toilet made no sense and it clearly lost them a lot of points.

Our pick: Velvet Soap advertisement print

Julia and Sasha: second place and 28.5 points

h4_r3_bathroom_julia_sasha-22

That vanity! The gold tapware! The tiles and the double shower! Sigh! Just gorgeous. I really loved this.

Shaynna said the vanity was stunning and Darren agreed it was beautiful due to each detail. “Everything about that is just perfect.” Neale said it was a bit of a wow moment.

Shaynna said the feature tile was beyond beautiful and “it’s everything you’d want out of double showers.”

h4_r3_bathroom_julia_sasha-11-2

Neale said the bathroom will have massive appeal on auction day and styling wise, they’d really nailed it. He felt the lights should be a bit lower though.

Our pick: Planet Luxe handwash

Kim and Chris: last place and 19 points

I feel so sorry for these two because they seem so damn nice, and positive, and hardworking! But, as Shaynna said, they really don’t “get” Art Deco, I don’t think. Shaynna said it was a mish-mash of chrome, black and gold. Darren said (sarcastically, and while struggling to hide his horror!) that more was obviously, more. And Neale said he felt like they’d now delivered three rooms from three totally different periods and their apartment was in danger of becoming a museum of rooms through the ages! Eep.

h5_r3_bathroom_kc-67

“What is this panelling?” asked (again horrified) Darren, while Neale said he liked it. Darren clearly thought Neale had lost the plot but the overhyped TVCs promising a big fallout between the two male judges were, as I suspected, totally over the top.

h5_r3_bathroom_kc-65

Neale said despite the errors it was still an elegant bathroom with so much space (they changed their floor plan) and buyers would walk in and be impressed.

Our pick: Sunday Minx towels

Next week: another guest bedroom and robe.

Affordable art – Shaynna Blaze & Urban Road collaborate again

On the back of last year’s super successful collaboration, interior design guru and The Block personality Shaynna Blaze has reunited with Urban Road yet again to create another fabulous range of on-trend and affordable art just begging to fill our blank walls.

UR_SB16-101_P_Escape_IMG_4144
Shaynna Blaze’s ‘Escape’ print – part of the ‘Flight’ collection

Titled ‘ELEMENT,’ the spring/summer 2016 range of original art prints and cushions is broken down into three distinct collections – ‘Beyond the Cracks,’ ‘Flight’ and ‘Inner Child.’  The ‘Flight’ collection features soaring fabrics designed to evoke the feeling of floating. We love the emerald colour way – a strong colour theme throughout the new range.

UR-403_Altitude_IMG_4277

Urban Road’s trademark tropical prints and abstracts feature alongside a photographic series too – with a particular focus on nature, the latest range includes emerald oceans, blustery blue skies and dry desert-scapes.

UR-404_Swell Emerald_IMG_4701

“I am always captivated by a stormy sky and raging ocean, and find myself lost in their ever-changing shapes. The colours after a storm seem almost magical, and it’s these moments I wanted to play with, introducing light and depth to activate life in each piece,” says Shaynna who collaborated with Urban Road’s creative director Suzie Atkin on the range.

A design from Shaynna’s ‘Inner Child’ range

The ‘Inner Child’ collection is perfect for the pint-sized among us – pretty, pastel watercolours are paired with whimsical quotes. We think they’d make a great addition to a nursery or older child’s room too.

UR-452_Nature’s Veil-Dusk_IMG_4685

The ‘ELEMENT’ range features plenty of other fabulous prints – we’re particularly fond of the tropical bird design that has been created in shades of blue (a nice twist on the jungle theme) and the trio of minimalist over-sized insect illustrations too.

UR-412_Zenneth_IMG_3899

As with season’s past, the new range is available in the brand’s usual line-up of glass framed art prints, stretched canvas box framed art prints and cushions too.

The Block week 1 room reveals: Master en suites

Hooray! We’re back to Block room reveals on Sunday nights, my favourite! Last night didn’t disappoint with a mixed bag of finished rooms and as much disappointment as there was praise from the judges. I’m pleased to say my favourite room, Julia and Sasha’s, won. Let’s recap on what the judges said and who scored what…

WILL & KARLIE

With its mix of rose gold and black finishes (personally I’d prefer one or the other but the judges didn’t seem to have a problem with the inconsistency, so what do I know?!), they were impressed overall. Neale said the pair had raised the bar from the previous week’s pod challenge and Shaynna said that for a young couple, they’d shown maturity and a great understanding of the sense of luxury required. Neale liked the nod to deco in the black blinds while Shaynna said the vanity was all wrong and took away from a lot of the good points. The lighting too, although pretty, was totally impractical.

H1_R1_Ensuite_Will_Karlie-17

Overall though, feedback was good. Neale said the bathroom would help sell the apartment, Shaynna loved the styling and Darren said the couple had proven they knew what they were doing.

H1_R1_Ensuite_Will_Karlie-20

The couple ended up coming second place with 25 points.

DAN & CARLEEN

On first glance, I absolutely loved what this couple had tried to do, although on closer inspection, a few things did fall apart. I’m still mad for their subway tiles, gold tapware and black tub though! They made brave choices, even if some of them didn’t quite come off. And their look was certainly more Art Deco than anyone else’s. Perhaps a little too much.

H2_R1_Ensuite_Dan_Carleen-21

Neale’s first impression was “wow” too. He said it ticked a lot of boxes. Shaynna agreed they had certainly taken on the whole deco look and loved the distressed subways and the patterned floor tiles. “The direction of the style is brilliant.” It was all going so well. Then…Darren! “I hate it!” While he couldn’t get past the unfinished floor tiles he also hated the raised bath and said it was a trip hazard and all wrong. The placement of the towels was also really awkward for anyone getting out of the shower.

H2_R1_Ensuite_Dan_Carleen-26

None of the judges rated Dan and Carleen’s styling. The ‘I love the shit out of you’ candle was an odd choice in anyone’s book and I agreed with Shaynna that the Missoni towels, although high end, didn’t go at all. Sadly, the couple didn’t take the feedback well at all and found it all very personal. Hopefully they’ll get a little more used to being on a reality TV show as the weeks go on!

This couple came last with 17 points.

ANDY & BEN

All I want to say about this pair is “Oh bless!” I mean really, who uses Radox shower gel, disposable razors and toothbrushes as the finishing touches in a high end bathroom?! But these young beginners are so genuine and have such great attitudes you can’t help but love them! And while their bathroom wasn’t a showstopper, their call to change the floorplan and keep part of it as an extra bedroom was, as Darren said, a master stroke.

H3_R1_Ensuite_Andy_Ben-22

Sadly though, Neale said it all felt a little bit cheap and Shaynna said it was everything she didn’t want to see (apart from the aforementioned Radox and razors, also basic chrome tapware, a Scandi vanity and concrete look tiles). Neale said they’d created  a bachelor pad feel and Darren noted that even if you know nothing about Art Deco, there’s nothing to stop you googling and finding out some pointers!

H3_R1_Ensuite_Andy_Ben-3

This likeable pair still managed to come third with 21.5 points. Again, bless!

JULIA & SASHA

This was my absolute favourite so I’m pleased the girls won with 26.5 points. Oh my, that gold tapware! I just love gold tapware but reluctantly decided it wasn’t the right choice for my own bathroom reno (starting today incidentally, so watch this space). So this bathroom left me feeling a tad jealous! The judges were also impressed with Darren declaring it “the business”; the perfect blend of contemporary and sophisticated with classic, bygone era.

H4_R1_Ensuite_Julia_Sasha-23

Shaynna thought the cabinetry was perfection (agreed, so classy!) and Neale said it was very sophisticated and luxe.

H4_R1_Ensuite_Julia_Sasha-36

While there were a few unfinished bits and the basin taps were too low, Darren still said the room was “spectacularly beautiful”.

A well deserved first place!

KIM & CHRIS

Oh dear. I hate to add insult to injury when these guys got such a bashing from the judges, but my eyes! I really was not a fan, but I was so impressed with the way the Newcastle couple took the feedback on the chin and vowed to learn from it. Brilliant attitudes and I really hope they go on to better things!

H5_R1_Ensuite_Kim_Chris-27

It did not start well with the judges with Shaynna asking ‘where are we?’ and Neale replying ‘in a time machine going backwards’! He added that it was completely soulless and off brief. Harsh but true. Shaynna said the shower tiles were ugly and just awful but thought the lighting and tapware were good choices (can’t say I agreed on the lighting). Where she was definitely right, and fair, was in saying that the quality of their work and time management were incredible.

H5_R1_Ensuite_Kim_Chris-17

They came in second from last with 19.5 points.

This season, The Block Shop has partnered with Matterport and Phoria to offer its customers a world first online retail experience. As of last night, you can now take yourself on a 3D tour of The Block and buy what you see from the comfort of your lounge room.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be rolling out this technology to our customers,” said Julian Cress, co-creator and executive producer. Online shopping is quickly becoming more and more sophisticated and to be able to take our fans behind the walls of The Block and let them get up close and personal with what the couples have created is really exciting.”

Trent Clews-de Castella, co-founder and CEO at Phoria (formerly Scann3d) said: “We’re working closely with The Block Shop to create a never seen before online retail experience. Each week, fans of the show can jump online and explore each room reveal directly from The Block Shop site. More importantly, using Matterport’s new Mattertag integration we can give users the ability to select products they like and click through to purchase within seconds. We’re excited by this new implementation, as we’re now witnessing these 3D tours evolve into intelligent environments that connect with rich media, all in the one holistic experience.”

One of the most enchanting things about Finders Keepers is that you are literally surrounded by beautiful and unique products, with the creative minds behind them on hand to assist you or have a chat should you be interested.

Find homemade ceramics, hand poured and deliciously scented candles, original artworks and cushions and homewares suited for whatever room you’re decorating.

There is innovative and one-of-a-kind fashion, accompanied by a plethora of handmade jewellery stalls. Just as much as I enjoy browsing the clothes for sale, I love checking out the outfits stallholders and customers put together for inspiration. The whole market is imbued with creativity, not least the people in it!

Artist Leah Bartholomew, the mind behind homewares label Beneath The Sun, is featuring fine art at Finders Keepers this year. She says it’s this variety and chance to meet customers and fellow designers that draws her to the market.

“Hands down my favourite thing about the marker is meeting everyone who supports my brand, and interacting with fellow designers. It is such a highly professional setup where we get to showcase our work in beautiful buildings and be surrounded my top quality work.”

It’s this opportunity to interact and share creatively that is making Shane Thompson, creator of leather goods label Afternoons With Albert, so excited to be participating in his debut Finders Keepers. He is excited to show customers the passion and authenticity that he puts into his work.

Angus and Celeste. Photo: Bec Taylor

Shane is just one of many first-time stallholders at the market this year. Finders Keepers ensures that approximately 30% of the 200-plus stallholders are brand new, meaning that new and exciting items being created by community members have a chance to show off their work.

This is part of the magic of Finders Keepers – designers and artists at different stages of development meet and feed of each other. According to market organisers, the shoppers and community itself also helps nurture this growth.

So if you’re in the market for bespoke and handmade goods, or even if you’re not (I’m yet to come away from Finders Keepers empty-handed despite intentions otherwise!), check out Finders Keepers. I can guarantee you’ll come away happy and inspired!

How to: Shaynna Blaze’s top tips for a speedy paint job

Like us, we’re sure many of you have experienced procrastination when it comes to a DIY home painting project – whether it’s choosing a colour or a lack of skills holding you back.

3 Walls in Taubmans Chalkware2

Today we’re talking to Shaynna Blaze, who shares her top tips for getting a paint job done in 8 weeks.

  1. If you haven’t already decided on your style, it can be hard to know where to start. I recommend looking everywhere for inspiration – your friends’ homes, social media sites like Pinterest, the great outdoors, your favourite fashion and interiors magazines and even shop window displays.  Look all around for style inspiration and scrapbook on and offline to gather your ideas together.
  2. Once you start looking for inspiration your creative juices will start flowing and that’s great! But you’ll need to stay organised, focussed and not get distracted by too many ideas. I recommend that you start editing and selecting your three favourite pictures from your scrapbook collection and using them as the basis for your colour choices
  3. For lots of people, choosing the colour is the scary bit because it feels like a big decision. But colour should be fun.1Walls in Taubmans Acapulco Cliffs
  4. I always start my paint choice with the mood I want the room to have; do I want light and bright or moody and dramatic.  For light and bright go for cool colours and cool based neutrals and for dramatic look at warm colours to add excitement to the room.
  5. After you have decided on the mood look at the colours of the furnishings you are keeping, like your couch, rugs, artworks and work them in together.  The less money you have to spend on big ticket items means you can put some money into a few new accessories for a huge change.
  6. When it comes to painting it’s all about the P’s: Planning, Preparation and Precision! After all, there is nothing worse than getting ready to paint and realising that you’ve forgotten an important tool. Make sure you use the Taubmans Paint Planner tool, it does all the thinking for you to ensure your shopping list covers everything you need.
2 Walls in Taubmans Lilac Cloud1
  7. Getting the space ready to paint might not seem like the most fun part of prepping but it can be! Recruit friends and family to help you move things into the middle of the room and cover everything with old sheets, put on some music and even have a little dance-off in between.
  8. Depending on the size of your paint project, you may be able to get the prep and paint done in a day or weekend but remember, you will need to allow for adequate drying time too.  Prepping any paint surface ready for painting may seem tedious but it will make painting faster and easier and will ensure your paint job lasts longer. While many people cite a lack of painting skills as a reason for their procrastination, others have difficulty even choosing a colour as they can’t imagine the final result. The ‘Paint in 8’ program, starting on Tuesday (9 February) is designed to remedy this by giving people the confidence to paint, all in eight weeks.

“Many Australians feel their homes should be a reflection of themselves, but they often come unstuck as to how to turn their goals into reality. Paint in 8 keeps people on track by making sure the process is comprehensive and stress-free over an eight-week period,” says Shaynna Blaze.

Art Designers Furniture Homewares Interviews Styling The Block

Our 10 best interviews from the heartfelt to the hilarious

After two years and over 1,000 articles(!), my time at Interiors Addict has come to end. It truly is bittersweet. To think I started as the editorial assistant, still at uni, working one day a week and feeling very out of my comfort zone… and now I’m here, the outgoing features editor, off to tackle the big bad world as a news producer at Sky News. Goodbye cushions, hello current affairs, business and politics (wish me luck!).

So to mark my departure, I thought I’d do one more list post. Below, I’ve put together my favourite interviews, from the motivational and heartfelt to the hilarious and oh so juicy.

Maisie Callcott is one inspiring teenager. Starting her business at the mere age of 12, the now 16-year-old runs Maypole Design, an online business selling wall hangings, rope-based jewellery and accessories and clay bowls. They’re beautiful and crazy affordable.

FullSizeRender-4-640x640

Now this was one interview I was quite nervous about. I made Jen read it and then re-read it again. After all, you can’t have any grammatical errors in an article about the editor-in-chief of Vogue Living, Neale Whitaker! He talked all things The Block, life in magazine-world and his many varied inspirations.

neale

I had the fortune of interviewing Shaynna Blaze on more than one occasion, but this interview was certainly my favourite. As a Block judge, resident designer on Selling Houses Australia, author and so much more, Shaynna got very honest as she opened up about her favourite contestants, copping flak and how she juggles it all.

Shaynna Blaze Blank Canvas

What a life Jeff Leatham has led! As the go-to florist to the stars, he’s designed floral arrangements for some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities and his stories, unsurprisingly, are juicy!

Jeff Leatham Fleurology_Lifestyle 1

There’s nothing quite like a story where someone loses it all but bounces back stronger and better than ever. It makes for some good motivational reading and the story of Claire Falkiner, founder of Merci Perci, is just that. Losing her job just days before Christmas and two weeks before her husband lost his, she decided to change paths and is now a successful artist doing what she loves.

Claire Falkiner

With so many homewares businesses out there it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. But one small business which has been able to do so is Hunting For George, who recently celebrated their fifth birthday. So it seemed only natural we ask: how do sisters Jo Harris and Lucy Glade-Wright do it?!

hunting-for-george-4-640x853

While I’ve interviewed many interior designers it’s hard to compete with the impressiveness of Jeff Copolov, interior design director at Bates Smart. With the firm having a 162-year-old history (now 163!) the projects Jeff has been involved in are absolutely jaw-dropping.

Jeff Copolov

Demian Carey Gibbins has a story many will envy. Feeling like his corporate career was ruling his life, he decided to hand in his resignation and return to his childhood love of painting. Having been a finalist in a range of renowned awards, his most interesting venture has been coordinating a successful exhibition of Bali 9 ringleader Myuran Sukumaran’s paintings.

Demian Carey Gibbins

The making of Incy Interiors is quite the fairytale. Starting with humble ambitions, founder Kristy Withers began the business when after a fruitless search for a bed for her son she decided to design one herself. Now, she’s runs a business of 13 people, has a new flagship store in Sydney’s Chatswood Chase and sells both kids and adult furniture.

Withers025-640x427

No one likes to talk cleaning, but for Murchison-Hume we will make an exception! What started as a local Sydney business has now well and truly gone international, but founder Max Kater’s mission has remained the same: for her products to be the trifecta of safe and green, looking and smelling great and performing well.

Shaynna Blaze’s tips for injecting fresh style into your home

By Shaynna Blaze

As we transition into the warmer months we have the opportunity to embrace the seasonal changes around us and use them as inspiration for updates we can make inside our homes. Everything from the brighter light of ever-present sunshine and the warmth in the air to the fragrant and colourful bursts of blooming flowers can be used as cues to transform your interiors.

This summer, take the time to clean and cleanse your space physically, visually and emotionally by utilising my top tips for injecting a fresh style into your home, inspired by the climbing temperatures.

Refresh with a splash of colour

A fresh new colour palette is a great way to inject freshness into a room. And the best thing about the Taubmans spring/summer trend colours is that you can incorporate them easily into your home, through paint, furnishings and accessories, or all three!

DR_4346-A
Before
After
After

For instant impact, paint your walls in one of my favourite trending hues. Cool colours, such as Taubmans Swordfish and Dancing Waters (pictured above), give energy to a room, which will help you invigorate your space. If you prefer a warmer palette, then use a pink, like Taubmans Really Rose or Pink Clay Pot. Pink is surprisingly versatile as a wall colour as it works well in combination with a range of other colour palettes.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QCJjM7kGaWbhldb3soyXHZU1f2rqF0Vm”]Another great, subtle way to introduce these colours into your home is to paint a piece of furniture, like a side table in your bedroom, in one of these colours. To create a cohesive look, ensure your bedding and cushions feature hints of the colour you choose. You can also add a surprising pop of colour in your dining room by painting the legs of a timber dining table and chairs.

Make an impact with all-important accessories

This year’s trend shades make for great feature colours in accessories. Small, simple updates like changing your cushions or swapping artwork can make a huge difference in a room and transform the feel of your home without undertaking a major project.

DR_4375-A_2

Deeper grey shades – like Taubmans Snow Goose (above) or Metal Glow – on the walls work well as the perfect backdrop for pops of pinks, greens and teals. Accessories like vases and cushions are a great way to affordably update your look, and in these vibrant hues they will leap out against grey walls and give a renewed energy to your room. An alternative high-impact option is to introduce colour in the fabric of a wing chair, which will make an impressive style statement against a grey, white or neutral wall.

Fill the air with fresh fragrances

The summer months are also associated with the sweet floral fragrances that fill the air. Bring a little of the outdoors into your home by accenting your room with a vase of fresh flowers, such as sweet peas, tulips or lilies. As well as looking effortlessly stylish, they smell amazing.

DR_4449-A

I also love to introduce some scented candles in invigorating fragrances like gardenia and jasmine. Not only will you feel fresher but you’ll also bring a revitalised energy to your whole home.

Well, that was a frustrating night of room reveals! It was definitely not a case of the best room winning if you ask me. In fact, the best two rooms (Dean and Shay’s and Luke and Ebony’s) came last and second from last on account of being unfinished. And I suppose the judges do have to judge on what they see on the night rather than the room’s potential but still! Frustration plus! What did you think?

Nevertheless, in my humble opinion, there were two fantastic (unfinished) rooms and three so-so ones. But the good moments were great!

CARO & KINGI (a close second, 25.5 points)

Shaynna loved the Melbourne wallpaper in the foyer and Neale liked the pale grey palette and the art. They didn’t like the LEDs on the floor. As Darren pointed out, they can look night clubby and cheap. And well, they kind of did! They also, as Shaynna pointed out, highlighted the dust and dirt.

carokingi1

Into the dining room and Neale loved the glass table, saying it preserved the sense of space. Darren thought the chairs were beautiful but sitting on them proved they weren’t comfortable!

carokingi2

Shaynna liked that the table was low and simple, which would draw attention to the terrace later. Darren said it showed being on level one was no disadvantage and the view was still spectacular. Shaynna wasn’t sold on the styling, which was too obviously industrial recycled. And the barnacle urn wasn’t winning any fans!

Sorry guys, I just wasn’t vibing this room, especially the table. And I didn’t like the mirror or the urn either. I just didn’t get it!

Our pick to buy: Melbourne wallpaper

WHITNEY & ANDY (first place, 26 points)

The real timber floors wowed all the judges who could see how much work had gone into them. From then on it was up and down! Shaynna said the placement of the art was too low, the lighting too harsh and that if they were going to use a poster as art they were better off having no art at all!

whitney andy 1

Into the dining room and Darren thought the ceiling was phenomenal, the star. He said the room felt really graphic and elegant and Neale said the table was cool. Shaynna said the table was engaging and Neale thought it was genius. He hated the “styling” though, saying he’d rather see nothing. Similarly, Darren liked the table but hated everything on it!

whitney andy 2

On the plus side, the judges thought they did get all the basics right this week and Shaynna said it was amazing that they finished everything. Personally, I couldn’t get too excited about this space.

Our pick to buy: Ingrain Designs dining table

SUZI & VONNI (last place, 16 points)

Oh dear. These were the first words we heard from the judges. Not the best start! Shaynna was stunned that the girls had gone for marble skirting boards (“What is that?!”) Neale and Darren couldn’t get over the poor finishes, saying they assumed they were aiming for luxury but it had been “shockingly badly done”. The judges weren’t mincing their words last night! Shaynna said the finishes were awful and that the mirror only magnified the lift door.

suzi vonni 2

The judges were perplexed by the orientation of dining table, leaving half the guests with their back to the view. But maybe that didn’t matter being that the huge and low pendant light was blocking most of it anyway!  Shaynna said the poor treatment of  the ceiling, the light fitting and the curtains all shut down the view.

Neale said that with every week, the apartment was feeling more disappointing. “I don’t think this apartment knows what it is anymore.”

suzi vonni 1

They were also underwhelmed by the other styling choices with the metal artwork causing Shaynna to ask for the second time: “What is that?!”

Neale added: “There’s absolutely no subtlety in this apartment. The styling hits you between the eyes, the light is too much and heavy. It feels like they’ve gone out of their way to hide view.”

Oh dear. Thank goodness for that Christian Cole table they won in the challenge! I just didn’t like this room. Sorry girls!

Our pick to buy: Christian Cole dining table

LUKE & EBONY (fourth place, 19 points)

The unpainted Gyprock wall was a bad start and the unfinished paintwork was disappointing. It became even more disappointing when the judges turned the corner into the dining room and saw what had been achieved.

luke ebony 1

“Oh my goodness, it’s magnificent in here,” Neale said. He added it was palatial and every time he walked into this apartment he felt like he was in the penthouse with its luxury of space due to the change in floorplan. “Removing those walls has completely auction-proofed the apartment,” said Darren. Neale said any potential buyer would walk out of the lift and be blown away.

luke ebony 2

Shaynna loved the oval dining table. Neale said that if only they’d finished they would have been team to beat (until they saw Dean and Shay’s apartment next, that is!). He said they were still in really strong position in the competition overall. How far the second chance siblings have come!

I loved the art, the styling and the light and I’m so happy to see these guys getting deservedly great feedback after their dodgy start.

Our pick to buy: Nicky Kriss art print | Black Franklin console (from the foyer)

DEAN & SHAY (third place, 21 points)

This was my favourite without a doubt, let’s forget about whether it was finished or not! This pair had awful luck with the rain delaying their spectacular floor and you had to feel for them.

shay dean 1

In the foyer, Neale absolutely loved the Silestone, timber and metal combo and Darren said it was a bit like the feel Suzi and Vonni had been (unsuccessfully) aiming for. Shaynna didn’t like it at all though! Neale and Darren loved the art choices.

Darren then rightly pointed out that the reason things weren’t finished was the “amazing” floor, which was absolutely beautiful, and they all loved the under floor heating.

Into the dining room and Darren said the styling on the table was totally over the top, theatrical, totally crazy and fantastic! Shaynna couldn’t hold her excitement in saying she loved it and it was the sexiest apartment she’d seen so far. Neale said it had a humour about it too. “I love it.” Shaynna meanwhile was still grinning from ear to ear: “I feel like I’m having a sugar high and my insides are going ‘wow’!” I hear you Shaynna, it was pretty special!

shay dean 2

Neale said it was feeling like the penthouse, they’d kept true to their slightly Scandi look but turned the dial up on the glamour. But he couldn’t ignore the fact that the foyer behind them was, sadly, a disaster.

Our pick to buy: Ben Tovin Design pendant light | Autumn leaves artwork | Pink concrete platter

So which was your favourite? Do you agree with me that the two unfinished rooms were the best? Is it fair that they were scored so low?

The Block living room reveals week 6

The judges may not have been overly impressed but I finished watching the living room reveals with a big smile on my face. It was truly the week of the underdogs, with Luke and Ebony taking out their first win, and Whitney and Andy just half a point behind. For two couples who have spent four weeks each in the bottom two, it was so lovely to see them get some positive feedback. So what did the judges have to say?

Caro and Kingi: 20, third place

Starting the week with the big idea to turn their living room into a home cinema, with recliners and a popcorn machine(!), second thoughts saw Caro and Kingi turn it down, a little bit! Bringing back their Scandi-industrial style with Kingi’s rendering and adding a special, one-of-a-kind artwork (a photograph of a hotel key they found in week one), after two wins in a row, the Townsville couple were the team to beat.

caro kingi the block living room 2

“It’s very dark,” said Darren upon entry. Shaynna agreed: “The whole building is about the view and the city, but the couch has its back to the view.” All the judges felt the layout was completely wrong and that by not taking advantage of their view and north-west aspect they had cut their selling point by 50%.

caro kingi the block living room 1

Shaynna thought the sofa would polarise buyers and dated the room. She did however like the key artwork, as did Darren, who felt it brought to the room a beautiful feeling of “heritage, history and authenticity.” The coffee table got a big tick as did the rug, styling and execution.

Whitney and Andy: 23, second place

Four weeks in a row in the bottom two had hit Whitney and Andy hard. With money at an all time low, they needed a win more than ever. Deciding on real timber floorboards and a feature wall with a mural painted on it, they hoped their show-stopping pieces would be enough to break their losing cycle.

whitney andy the block living room 1

“At least they got the orientation right,” said Shaynna, “This is the polar opposite than what we’ve just come from and it feels so much bigger.” However, while Neale liked the orientation, he did not feel the same way about the art: “That totally overwhelms me.” Darren thought it was young and cool, but all the judges agreed it didn’t fit the geographic location. “It’s more a studio in Fitzroy than a luxury apartment in South Yarra,” said Neale.

whitney andy the block living room 2

The judges loved the coffee table and sound system and thought the floorboards were spectacular. The chair in the corner, with its little shelf was also a hit. “This room shows planning, foresight and courage in a tight timeframe with no money,” said Darren. The judges’ overall thoughts were that they were on the right track, with layout and furniture choices, but just needed to up their styling and sophistication.

Suzi and Vonni: 18, fourth place

After coming in last place in last week’s room reveal and finding out they were strapped for cash, Suzi and Vonni were another team desperate for a win. Hoping to wow the judges with a recessed bar, a full-wall wine fridge and electric fireplace, it’s safe to say it didn’t go quite according to plan!

suzi vonnie the block living room

“A wine fridge in your living room,” said Neale. “Now that is just bizarre!” All the judges were a bit flabbergasted! “They’re a great luxury inclusion in a pantry but not by the couch,” said Shaynna. Looking around, Darren though 50% of the room was beautiful and luxurious. He loved the sofa, wall treatment, chair, mirror, linens, and timber on the floor, but then looking in the other direction (at the bar and fridge) and it all fell apart.

suzi vonnie the block living room 1

Then Shaynna spotted the electric fireplace: “That is the most hideous thing I’ve seen this series!” Uh oh! All the judges agreed the whole room had poor execution and the focus was all about drinking and not living. “This is actually very tacky,” Shaynna said of the whole space. “The use of the mirror in the bar area, reflecting the view, is the only good thing about it,” said Darren. The judges’ solution? Turn the bar into a bookcase and get rid of the fireplace. The room can be salvaged!

Luke and Ebony: 23.5, first place

Spending the first four weeks in the bottom two had the WA siblings in the dumps, but after coming second last week and winning 10 grand at the glass challenge, things were starting to look up! Weeks ago they had made the game-changing decision to knock out some walls and make an open-plan living space. Add some custom-made cabinetry and Luke and Ebony certainly had their zing back.

luke ebony the block living room 2

“That’s super cool,” said Darren about the new open-plan entry way. “That’s going to make it feel so huge,” said Neale, “In fact it’s already feeling quite big just in here.” All the judges agreed turning the kitchen, living and dining into one space was going to put their apartment in a different league. In Neale’s opinion it really was a masterstroke.

luke ebony the block living room 1

While the judges still had issues with the orientation and felt the sofa should have been facing the view, the seating, built-in cabinetry, flooring, artwork and sliding panel that hid the TV all got big ticks. Shaynna thought the colours were a knock out and was a big fan of the rug. That said, none of the judges liked the bar and they all hated the tiles. “It feels cheap and nasty,” said Shaynna. “Replace those tiles with a mirror.”

Dean and Shay: 12, last place

Making the gamble to change the layout of their apartment and swap the kitchen and living room, meant Dean and Shay’s living area was exactly where the current construction work was! So, unable to reveal their space in time, they put together a taster plate for the judges, so they could see the furniture and accessories, and well that was all.

dean shay the block living room 2

For once the judges were a bit speechless. Until… “It’s a disaster,” said Neale. “It’s a joke,” said Shaynna. With no plaster, no paint and no floors, the judges felt changing the layout had been a mistake, especially because of the windows. “The window height is different to all the other apartments,” said Neale. “These are kitchen windows they have no impact compared to the full length windows in the original living room. It’s all about impact and the impact is lost in here.”

dean shay the block living room 1

The judges thought it was a bit of a tragedy, but they attempted to not lose hope. “We just have to wait and see what the grand plan is,” said Neale. “It could be smarter than all of us.” All of the judges agreed that the kitchen and dining areas would have to be absolutely stunning to save the apartment.

The Block triple room reveals week 5

All I can say is finally! After four weeks of being at the bottom end of the leaderboard, siblings Luke and Ebony managed to produce three beautiful rooms and get a score of 27.5! And while they didn’t win, coming second to Caro and Kingi on 28.5, it was so nice to see something finally go their way. Unfortunately, that can’t be said for all, with the triple room reveal of the study, powder room and laundry presenting Suzi and Vonni with their worse feedback yet. A score of 19.5 and some extremely harsh comments, it’ll be interesting to see where they go to from here. Onto the judges’ comments…

Caro and Kingi: 28.5, first place

Scoring their second win in a row, this week the Queenslanders decided to mix things up; ditching the render and the graffiti for colour on the walls and patterned mosaic tiles in the powder room. And what a good decision that was!

Darren loved the colour in the study and Shaynna adored the shelves. All the judges agreed that the room had a wonderful industrial feel that wasn’t overly obvious or too in your face.

the block 1

Onto the powder room and the mosaic tree, partnered with the simple tiles and colour palette got a huge tick. “I have not seen that before,” said Neale. Darren thought it was beautiful and Shaynna agreed: “This couple have the best eye!”

the block 2

All the judges loved the size of the laundry and thought it was very well planned. “It’s all about space and functionality but it’s still good-looking,” said Neale.

Whitney and Andy: 24.5, fourth place

This week the reno newbies spent big on some controversial ideas, mainly render in the wet rooms and then of course the bidet! However, it was their most affordable room, the study, that got the highest praise.

“This is unexpectedly good,” said Darren upon entry. “Is that a really mean thing to say?!” All the judges thought the room was superb and the couple’s best to date. They loved the shelving, the made to order glass top desk and all the finishes. Neale thought there was a beautiful feeling of luxury in the room.

whitney andy block 2

However, once in the powder room, the judges were a little dumbstruck. Everyone thought the bidet was a waste of space and too polarising for buyers. Darren really liked the rendered wall finish but thought it didn’t relate to the rest of the apartment. All the judges agreed it was a very different direction to the Scandi look in the study. “I feel like I’m in a different apartment standing in here,” said Shaynna.

whitney andy block 1

Into the laundry, it became obvious the study was the odd one out, with the laundry having the same rendered wall finish as the bathroom. Darren liked the tile choice and benchtop but Shaynna thought the room lacked detail. The judges’ overall advice: the three spaces are good but they don’t work together. So if they are going to move forward with one of the styles it must be the study.

Suzi and Vonni: 19.5, last place

After two successful weeks at HQ, it all went rapidly downhill! With the judges believing this week, the friends were on the wrong side of Gold Coast glam!

“Back in the gentleman’s club,” said Neale upon entry. However, unlike the master bedroom that had a modern vibe, the judges thought this week the study looked old-fashioned and dated. “Everything in here looks uncomfortable and kind of cheap,” said Neale. Shaynna didn’t like the rug and Darren thought the room showed obvious signs of budget pressure. The judges’ general consensus: “Everything you can take out of here you should take out of here and start again.” Harsh!

suzi vonnie the block

Into the bathroom and things didn’t get better. All eyes were on the inset chandelier. “This is just ridiculous,” said Shaynna. Neale thought it was horrendous and a sensory overload: “To put it simply it’s tacky and that’s not something I’ve thought up until now.”

suzi vonnie the block 2

The judges were certainly relieved there was no chandelier in the laundry! In fact all the judges though it was a much more successful room, thanks to great appliances, shelving and benchtops. Yet the overarching problem was none of the rooms fitted together. “This is now country-style,” said Neale. “Whereas up until now this apartment has been very glamorous and contemporary. Where are we now?” Shaynna thought the rooms were clash upon clash upon clash: “I can’t remember the last time I saw three rooms that jarred so much.”

Luke and Ebony: 27.5, second place

After four tough weeks, there were positive comments at last! Deciding to go back to basics and move two walls to change the room configuration, the siblings were finally in for some luck.

Upon entry, the judges were pleasantly surprised. “It’s a new direction,” said Neale. “A much better direction,” added Darren. Shaynna loved the colours, the flooring, the bench seat and the cabinetry. The judges applauded the contemporary style and recommended the duo go back through their bedrooms and implement the new look.

luke ebony block

Into the powder room and the compliments continued. “I think this week represents a new beginning,” said Neale. Shaynna loved the glass door, but thought the execution was a bit dodgy. And Darren gave the cabinetry and tapware big ticks: “They’ve attempted something different and it’s worked.”

luke ebony block 1

Finally the laundry, and the judges loved the different layout, which saw storage on both sides and a corridor in between. “This is very clever planning,” said Darren. “This is the first of the four laundries that thought outside the box.” Timeless, elegant and contemporary, all the judges agreed the new direction was something very marketable and buyer friendly.

luke ebony block 2

– Our pick to buy: Small Desk Lamp | Kennedy Wing Dining Chair | Hourglass

Dean and Shay: 25.5, third place

This week the penthouse team started to feel the budget pinch, but that didn’t stop them from spending big on a polished concrete floor and making the bold decision to take space away from the study to enlarge the kitchen.

“That floor is just unbelievable,” said Shaynna upon entry. “And it’s heated!” Darren loved it all and thought the attention to detail was mind-blowing. However, he did question where all the money was coming from! Everything got big ticks, though the wall colour did polarise the judges, with Darren a fan and Shaynna saying it reminded her of “mint crunch chocolate!”

the block shay 1

Into the powder room and Neale thought the floor tiles were beautiful and worked wonderfully with the marble. Shaynna loved the copper tapware and Darren thought all the textures, colours and finishes worked beautifully together: “There’s just the right amount of glamour in here.”

the block shay

Finally into the laundry, but the reaction wasn’t as great. “There’s a lot going on in here,” said Darren. None of the judges liked the tiling and thought it made the harsh angles of the build look even worse. “It doesn’t have the same level of sophistication as the other rooms,” said Neale.

The Block room reveals week 3: master bedroom and walk in robe

Last night saw five incredibly different master bedrooms and walk-in robes revealed. Caro and Kingi were keen for a win after coming second place two weeks in a row. But it seems the couple are destined to always be the bridesmaid and never the bride, coming in second… again! Gold Coast girls Suzi and Vonni scored an incredible 30/30 and for Whitney and Andy it was quite the heartbreaking result, with the team not completing their rooms in time.

So, what did the judges think?

Kingi and Caro: 27.5, 2nd place

Desperate for a win, this week the Townsville couple decided to take some risks in the form of a large nib wall (to change the orientation of the room) and a beam on the ceiling to create symmetry. While the judges initially thought the room may not have been big enough for a nib wall, they were all quickly convinced. Shaynna in fact thought it felt quite spacious, but believed the wall needed something like a sideboard to break it up visually.

H1_R3-13

All the judges loved the rendering on the wall and ceiling. They thought the art was spot on and believed the colours were referenced beautifully and subtly in the furnishings. Neale particularly liked the little nook with the desk, but soon realised the desk had been set too high. Shaynna thought the retro chair and Asian side table in the corner didn’t mesh with the rest of the design and that the pendant above the bedhead was unnecessary.

H1_R3-9

Into the walk-in robe and the judges thought it was sexy and cool. Darren loved the open feel and the ottoman and mirror. Neale thought the artwork was great and was glad the couple had resisted their go-to graffiti decor.

H1_R3-19

— Our picks to buy: Geo Flynn Black MirrorGraffiti Art Canvas | Plank Oak Clock

Whitney & Andy: 18.5, last place

The Melbourne couple started the week out inspired, designing an innovative Scandinavian bed frame. However, the delays started from there and the week turned into an absolute shocker! Their problem? Time management and a lot of time running around but not enough time on the tools. Luke and Ebony’s last-minute dash to help them out made a difference, but in the end it was all too little too late and the rooms were left unfinished.

H2_R3-8

Upon entry the judges were immediately disappointed: “What a shame!” Darren thought their idea was terrific but the execution was terrible. Neale liked that they had listened to what the judges has said last week and made the room more sophisticated. But in the end they all agreed that the couple had only delivered half a room.

H2_R3-21

The walk-in robe was no better, with paint and plaster on the carpet and unfinished cabinetry. The advice from the judges: “Treat every hour like it’s your last.”

Suzi & Vonni: 30, first place

Last week the girls’ over the top design split the judges down the middle and it was so expensive that Scotty had to step in with a budget warning! But a win in the bedhead challenge was a massive boost, with the duo scoring $10,000 worth of cabinetry. So it’s safe to say the girls didn’t hold back!

H3_R3-12

“Wow!” said Darren upon entry. Neale agreed, “They really know how to pull something different out of the bag every week”. Neale felt like he had walked into a very sophisticated gentleman’s club. And he meant that in a good way! All the judges loved the gentleman’s library and bar and thought the whole space felt like a luxurious hotel suite.

H3_R3-9

Darren loved the palette, the colours, the material and the art. Neale thought the room was perfectly resolved and his only fault was that they should have spray painted the aircon grate above the door.

H3_R3-21

The walk-in robe continued with the glamour. All the judges loved the layout and thought it was very high-end. “I wouldn’t change a thing!” said Shaynna.

— Our picks to buy: Louis ArmchairNamibia Cushion | Horn/Shell Bottle

Luke and Ebony: 22, 4th place

For the WA brother and sister, last week’s scores pushed them into design confusion. Last for two weeks in a row and with no clear style in mind, the siblings tried very hard to step it up this week.

http---prod.static9.net.au-_-media-TV-T-The-Block-Octogon-Latest-Week-3-master-bed-reveals-H4_R35.ashx

“This is a lot more glamorous,” said Shaynna. Neale felt like it was a grown up version of last week’s room and had personality in spades. But Darren felt it didn’t work, believing the room to be too angular. Shaynna also wasn’t a fan, saying the room had three styles that unfortunately didn’t mesh.

http---prod.static9.net.au-_-media-TV-T-The-Block-Octogon-Latest-Week-3-master-bed-reveals-H4_R318.ashx

Into the robe and things got worse. The judges felt the walk-in didn’t match with the bedroom or bathroom; with grey timber laminate in the robe, all black in the bedroom and navy in the bathroom! Shaynna thought the joinery would have been better off darker and that the whole master suite felt unresolved and clashed.

Dean & Shay: 23, 3rd place

With two wins in a row, Dean and Shay were the team to beat. This week their dilemma was whether to play it safe or not. And safe they went, opting for a huge timber bulkhead and a pop up TV as their secret weapons.

H5_R3-1-2

“It’s definitely cool,” said Darren upon entry. “It looks like they’ve opened up a trend book and gone tick tick tick.” But as the judges agreed, that just made the room lack individuality! As Neale perfectly put it: “Nobody’s going to walk in and say ‘I don’t like it’, but is anyone going to come in and say ‘wow’?”

H5_R3-11

Neale wasn’t excited by the TV and Shaynna thought the bench seat was an uncomfortable waste of space. Darren felt the room needed to be much more sophisticated and that instead it was just very safe.

H5_R3-17

In the walk-in robe, things improved. “This is bloody beautiful,” said Darren. The colour palette, brass hangers and symmetry were loved by all. Neale thought the space was a notch above the bedroom. However, he didn’t like the replica chair and thought the finishings were a bit too shabby.

The Block room reveals week 2: guest bedroom and en suite

I loved the variety in last night’s room reveals. Whether good, bad or ugly, they were all pretty unique. There wasn’t much shock factor in the judging though, with the same couples coming first and last as last week! While Dean and Shay took home a sweet 10 grand again (got to pay for that 40 grand bathroom somehow!), poor Luke and Ebony were in fifth place yet again. I’m really feeling for the second chance siblings and really hope they can  get some confidence in their ability and personal style and take things up a notch next week. Fingers crossed.

Kingi and Caro: 26.5, 2nd place

I think these two are really likeable, don’t you? They’re doing so well and must be frustrating (if encouraging!) to be so close behind Dean and Shay and their $10,000 wins!

carokingi1

This pair stayed consistent with last week’s room, using a vinyl wrap on the en suite door like they did on last week’s showstopping bath tub. And there was more of Kingi’s lovely rendering on the bedroom feature wall and in the en suite vanity top, to great effect. Their raw industrial aesthetic is very obvious and they seem confident of their personal style.

carokingi2

The judges, as hoped, all touched the rendered wall as soon as they came in and all loved the dark, rich colour. Neale loved the bedside table and light combination and Darren said he could really see the vibe they were going for: edgy, urban and a little bit industrial. He said the bedhead was the right choice as it softened the texture of render and the tram graphic on the en suite door worked a treat. Shaynna said it was sensational and that the door handle spelled luxury and money.

Shaynna also complimented the labour and the way they had worked with angles of the room. Neale said they’d made the most of the space and it felt big. They all slammed the styling though and said the cushions were ordinary.

The en suite got positive feedback too with Shaynna noting it felt a lot bigger than it was and she loved the custom concrete top, the taps, basin and bench space. Darren said they’d squeezed more storage into the tiny bathroom than they’d seen in many main bathrooms and that it was a very successful room.

–Our pick to buy: Basic Habitat slate tray | Beacon Lighting adjustable floor lamp | Linen & Moore grey throw | Bedsides

Whitney & Andy: 18.5, 4th place

I loved the exposed whitewashed brick and the copper pendants in this room. The less said about the rest of it the better but I can’t not mention that rug?! Gah!

whitneyandy1

whitneyandy2

On entering, Neale said “wow” and Shaynna said “oooh” but not necessarily for the right reasons! Darren immediately said it was a guest bedroom because there was no way there was enough hanging space for a ‘real’ bedroom. Shaynna went so far as to say the choice to install a hanging stick rather than a wardrobe was ludicrous and while that would usually seem over the top, I have to agree! Neale said it was a big mistake and Darren said he wouldn’t try to sell the place without a wardrobe.

On the plus side, the room felt very spacious (that’ll be the lack of wardrobe!) and Shaynna liked the bulkhead all the way round, saying it showed the thought process was great. Darren liked the bedhead but said the rug was very wrong. Again, agreed! Neale said it was a very confused room. “I don’t know if I’m in an old motel or  a luxury apartment.” Shaynna went one further and called it a mishmash.

whitneyandy3

When it came to the en suite they were pleasantly surprised although the lack of doors would surely lead to flooding the first time the shower was used. Darren said it felt a little eighties.

Overall, the judges’ advice was to put this week’s rooms behind them and refocus. Owch.

–Our pick to buy: Curious Grace bedside tables | artwork | navy quilt cover set

Suzi & Vonni: 23, 3rd place

Despite all manner of tradie troubles, the Gold Coast girls finished their room as they’d hoped this week, with its polarising glass panels covered in a photographic park scene. It was a brave move which was never going to be popular with everyone! I wasn’t a fan myself but you know what, at least it was original!

suzivonni1

First up with his view was Neale, who said the other half of the room was 10 out of 10 but the glass panels freaked him out. Shaynna said the provincial look of the room didn’t go with the glass mural at all, likening it to a corporate mural in a reception centre. Eek! She also hated the plastic timber on the wall, the carpet and the mismatched handles.

suzivonni2

Darren however really loved all of it. “I think it’s cool, as a guest bedroom it’s interesting.” He said the girls’ apartment would definitely be the Palazzo Versace of the building!

Neale said the en suite was lacking in impact but he was relieved! Darren said it was very understated and they all loved the tapware and the layout. Darren was really surprised and disappointed about the unflattering lighting.

suzivonni3

Shaynna, to be fair, said she enjoyed how brave this pair are but they they needed to really rein it in a bit.

–Our pick to buy: The Monocle Guide to Better Living book | studded bedhead | round black concrete tray

Luke and Ebony: 18, last place

Last place last week and last place again this week. My interview with Ebony from before the series started is now starting to make a lot of sense. Despite reining in her plans for an entire feature wall of plum coloured pressed tin (what was she thinking?!) to two small panels, it still didn’t quite work out. Ok, that’s an understatement. I felt so sad for Ebony at the end after the scores were revealed. She’s so nice!

lukeebony1

Shaynna’s face! said it all. Darren simply said: “I don’t like it,” while Neale commented: “Pressed tin: haven’t seen that for a while!” Oh dear…

lukeebony2

Neale said he couldn’t imagine why anyone would choose to use that material and while he loved the reading corner in the room, it didn’t go with anything else. Shaynna loved the bedside tables but I fear she may have been grasping at straws.

It didn’t get all that much better in the en suite. It started well with Shaynna praising the layout and Darren, the lighting, underfloor heating and storage. Neale loved the black tapware and said the execution was excellent.

lukeebony3

But they all agreed the tile choices felt dated (I happened to love that floor if not the wall tiles!). Shaynna said the siblings were not bringing out their best at the moment and Neale didn’t hold back, saying he didn’t think the room would appeal to anyone.

–Our pick to buy: Oui and Non cushion covers | Hugo armchair | Single drawer black bedside table

Dean & Shay: 27.5, first place

These two lived up to their penthouse again this week, winning $10,000 for the second time in a row! It must be really hard for the other couples to keep liking them at this point, even though they do genuinely all seem quite friendly!

deanshay1

Despite their plan for a Megan Morton x Incy Interiors black four-poster bed bein replaced with a backup ensemble, they still killed it! Neale said it felt really fresh and Darren loved it, pointing out the bed dressing, saying it wasn’t easy and they’d got it perfect. Neale said the colour palette was beautiful; a young style delivered in grown up way.

deanshay other side

The only issue was the large (tick!) wardrobe which was hard to open.

deanshay3

The en suite got plenty of ticks too, for the storage, spacious feeling, attention to detail and consistency with last week’s bathroom. Shaynna said they were proving they were the right couple to get the penthouse.

–Our pick to buy: Rainy Sunday flower jars | Curious Grace bedsides | Scent of Home brass candle | Lumiere Art + Co Jessa print (last two bought from Cranmore Home)

The Block-togon first room reveals: bathroom

Well, look at that, here we are again with another series of The Block, sharing Sunday night’s reveals with you, the judges’ comments and where to buy what you saw on TV. Remember to check in with us every Monday for our famous roundups!

I must say, they were all very impressive bathrooms considering how early we are in the competition, the lack of experience of some of the contestants and the difficult (and that’s putting it mildly) building. Not to mention setback after setback with the usual construction site issues! Come reveal, I’d say there were five really good bathrooms but one was clearly head and shoulders above the rest and, not surprisingly, Shay and Dean took out the $10,000 win. Good job too considering they spent a whopping $40,000 on their first penthouse room, a third of the total budget for all 10. Luckily their risky spend paid off!

Onto the reveals, what judges Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer had to say about them and what I thought too, plus where to buy our favourite items…

CARO & KINGI (2nd place)

caro kingi 1

The Townsville couple made a very brave move with their feature graffiti bath. I personally hated it (not my style) BUT I thought it worked and was memorable and you can’t argue that it suits an edgy Melbourne home. I thought Kingi’s hand rendered wall on the other hand, was fantastic. And the vanities and lighting were just right. Good on them for making such a brave choice on week one (and happily that graffiti design is removable!).

caro kingi 2

What the judges thought: Shaynna said the bath was exciting and she loved it, while Neale loved the rendered wall, Darren adding that Kingi had nailed it! The judges said they’d created something memorable which would be noticed by potential buyers. On the downside, Darren thought the towel choice was unsophisticated and Shaynna thought the blinds blocked out too much natural light. Neale finished off by saying he loved that they’d taken a risk this early on.

Where to buy: Voyager candle (my favourites!) | timber soap dish | CLU. Living candle in brown jar

WHITNEY & ANDY (3rd place)

After their challenge room being called the worst EVER by the judges last week, this pair had something to prove! And they tried really hard and with lovely results. They took out their wardrobe to make the room bigger and made lovely use of timber in my opinion, for a warm and relaxing feeling bathroom. While I really liked this bathroom and agreed it was a vast improvement on last week, nothing about it excited me that much.

whitney andy 1

whitney andy 2

What the judges thought: Neale said they’d gone from zero to hero in one week (was this really the same couple who gave us plastic gerberas?!) and Darren said it was a cracker! Shaynna loved the custom vanities and matching timber shelf and said the lighting plan was perfect. She added that while last week had been a disaster, this week the couple had proven they had talent and a great eye. There weren’t many downsides but Neale said the styling left a bit to be desired and the pendant over the bath was too small.

SUZI & VONNI (4th place)

It would be easy to underestimate these two former bikini models from the Gold Coast and that’s of course exactly what the TV producers would have you do (and then later be proven wrong!). BUT, I think we’re actually dealing with two rather nice, hardworking single mums who just happen to wear a lot of makeup, show a lot of cleavage and have a penchant for the more blingy things in life! While it wasn’t my personal taste (too much black and bling and I didn’t like the tiles although I think they were a brave and unique choice and good on them for doing something different), I thought the girls did a great job this week, despite setbacks. And I loved how you could walk all the way around the tub. I think this pair have realised their look may be a little too Gold Coast and I hope they’ll tone it down a bit going forward so as not to alienate potential buyers.

suzi vonni 2

suzi vonni 1

What the judges said: Neale said it was sexy and Shaynna loved the tiles while Darren stood back and saw the negatives, like the fact the window onto the shower wasn’t frosted and you couldn’t keep your privates private (hehe!) while the pendant in front of the mirror was too glitzy and not necessary. Shaynna noted the functional storage wasn’t good and while she found the LED strip light magical, Darren said it looked like a giant barcode (I’m with you on this one, DP!). Neale said they’d hooked him though and overall the judges were impressed.

LUKE & EBONY (last place)

It’s the comeback kids! After last series’ bathroom fail, my favourite brother and sister couple had much to prove too and sadly, they didn’t quite cut it, coming last. I really felt for them when they were hit by a series of delays. The navy blue high gloss tiles were unique and on the face of it, really nice, but I just can’t go past those odd taps and the tiny basins, and I agreed with Neale that the LED lit alcove wasn’t right. And while I loved that bath, I’m not sure a black bath was the best match for the blue tiles? It has the potential to be fixed up pretty easily though, I think, into something much better. I feel bad, I love these two! But I have every faith they’ll impress more as the competition goes on (please be right, Jen!).

luke and ebony 2

luke and ebony 3

What the judges said: First impressions were great. Shaynna loved the layout, the lighting, the separate toilet. Neale said it felt small after they made the call to square off the angular room. He really wanted to like it but didn’t like the niche in the wall with the LED lighting and found the basins too small. Shaynna added the taps were also too big and none of them liked the mix of chrome and black tapware. Neale said a lot of things in the room jarred. Shaynna said they’d made great choices individually but when put together they almost cancelled each other out. It was, however, very well finished.

DEAN & SHAY (first place)

While I don’t think these photos do this $40,000 penthouse bathroom justice, I do think it was the clear winner and absolutely loved its black and gold accents and stunning herringbone tiles. I just didn’t like the towel choices and felt the timber lights didn’t work in the scheme. But overall: WOWSERS. Loved it.

dean shay 4

dean shay 3

What the judges said: As Shay mentioned countless times, this is the penthouse and expectations would be high! The judges were not disappointed. “Um, this is HOT,” said Darren, adding that everything was just so. Neale said it was a level of sophistication not seen in any of the other bathrooms, despite them being very good. He went on to call it mindblowing while Darren said he was losing his mind! Mission definitely accomplished by the Newcastle couple! Shaynna loved the tiles and how they’d been used and said they were hot (that’s two hots now!) and the only thing Neale didn’t like was the pendants (we’ve seen them before and they’ve been overused). The execution though, was faultless. Neale said that while they won last week’s challenge, it was as the best of a bad bunch; this week they had seriously raised the bar!

Designers Expert Tips Interviews The Block

Take 5 with Shaynna Blaze

After a year and a half of running our weekly post, Olivia’s Fab Four, we thought it was time for a change! Rather than hearing about my favourite things, we thought each week we’d shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from their favourite cafe and shop to their favourite book and musician.

So up first, it’s the woman who needs no introduction, Shaynna Blaze (she’s the judge on The Block and the interior designer on Selling Houses Australia, in case you’ve been living under a rock!).

Shaynna

1. What’s your favourite holiday destination?

I think the last holiday I went on become my favourite, visiting Lake Como, Venice, Florence and New York all in the past few months…. it is hard to pick a favourite! But I have to say Paris still has my heart as the most magical holiday destination.

2. What’s your favourite book?

I haven’t read it myself but I will say the Harry Potter series, as it taught my kids to be lost in the fantasy world of storytelling and showed them how visual the printed word could be.

3. What’s your go-to recipe?

For winter you can’t go past pumpkin soup. Once you have the ingredients it’s fast, easy and healthy. Basic stock, lots of pumpkin, garlic, grated ginger, a sprinkling of goat’s cheese and fresh coriander and it’s all done in 20 minutes.

4. What’s your favourite piece of furniture?

I have just acquired my chair Cary from my collection with Molmic and it’s the chair everyone wants to claim as their own. It’s so ridiculously comfortable you know it’s the chair to curl up on and never leave. My husband thinks it’s his, but have I got news for him!

5. Who’s your favourite musician?

I love Alicia Keys as she writes and plays her own music and has such an incredible voice; it is mesmerising, sassy and gutsy all at the same time.
