8 of the best looking frames for your photos

I think a lot of us are guilty of never printing our photos. Nowadays, our treasured memories live on our phone or computer, rather than on our walls or mantle-piece. But in my opinion, that needs to change. Below are eight beautiful and affordable frames that will hopefully convince you to take a trip down to your local developer. Because if they can’t, there’s no hope for you!

Available in four sizes and three timber finishes (black, white and ash), the Zavier Frame from Neural Instinct is a contemporary classic. With prices starting from $29.95, style on its own, in a group or as part of a wall collage.

Our pick of the season’s best vases

Flowers can truly transform an interior, but when they’re placed in an ordinary, old or just plain ugly vase, well it can be a huge waste of money and nature! Here are our favourite seven vases, which are easily as beautiful as the flowers you will put in them.

Made from a concrete base with a wire frame, the unique Ghost Concrete Vase ($49) from Zakkia may not be the most practical. But what it lacks in functionality it makes up for in beauty!

ghost vase zaakia

I’m a big fan of the geometric vases from Art Club Concept and actually own one myself. Beautiful — with or without flowers –the limited release Daybreak Vase ($59.95) is made from hand painted ceramic and textured granite.

Nothing can beat the beauty of Dinosaur Designs’ resin homewares, and I am particularly in love with The Resin Slate Vase in Black & Snow Swirl ($170). Handmade in Australia, each piece is unique with no colours or swirls ever exactly the same.

Showing Scandi design at its best the Scanda Marble & Leather Vase (available in black and white) is both contemporary and functional. Designed by Curious Grace, prices start from $95.curious graceAvailable from Country Road for $129, the Bevel Copper Large Vase (middle) is minimal and contemporary. Both decorative and functional, cluster the different sizes and finishes together for a statement centrepiece.

The limited edition Vases with Gold Wings ($122) from Mari Bray consist of two little vases with handpainted faces, carved eyes and mouths, a vintage floral ceramic decal and wings painted in pure gold. However, that’s not the best part. Rather, the vases can be personalised with you and your partner’s face. Now how cute is that?!

On sale for $29.95 each, these Ceramic Wall Bud Vases from West Elm turn botanicals and flowers into works of art. Arrange several in a group to create a beautiful hanging garden.

Get the look from new Nancy Meyers film, The Intern

When you think about classic, all-American interior design, chances are you think of the utterly dreamy interiors from films such as It’s Complicated (that kitchen!) or Something’s Gotta Give (that Hamptons house!) or perhaps you (like me) love the quintessentially English cottage from The Holiday. Those films were the work of filmmaker Nancy Meyers, who has garnered at least as many fans for her lovably flawed characters as her legendary room sets.

THE INTERN

[contextly_sidebar id=”dH9T6apLy4FexCLo8dRk3PDDx0jA9CEZ”]Her latest work, The Intern, hits cinemas this week, and at first glance it’s clear the interiors are going to live up to fans’ expectations. Protagonist Jules (played by Anne Hathaway) runs an online fashion start-up and her young, energetic style is reflected in both her converted-factory office and her Brooklyn brownstone home, which she shares with her young family.

Even though the New York interiors in this film are worlds apart from the breezy Hamptons beach house in Something’s Gotta Give or the LA mansion and English cottage in The Holiday, they all share something special. So exactly how do you sum up this Nancy Meyers look? Well, it’s the same kind of layered, casual, glamorous-yet-effortless aesthetic which has made Pottery Barn a household name in the US and beyond. And now you too can achieve the look in your home thanks to Pottery Barn and its family of brands here in Australia: Pottery Barn Kids, Williams-Sonoma and west elm.

Recognised globally for its unique sophistication and style, Brisbane is one of the fastest-growing capital cities in Australia. As such, our global expansion will continue with three stores opening in Fortitude Valley, amidst a hive of activity already established,” said Ron Young, Senior Vice President of Global, Williams-Sonoma, Inc. “At the heart of our brands – Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm – is unique design, exceptional customer service, and a calendar of in-store experiences for our customers.”

Local photographer and stylist Kara will bring her inimitable flair to the stores’ opening day celebrations as guest host. “I’m thrilled West Elm, Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids have chosen our city of Brisbane for their new stores,” she said. “This will give Brisbane the chance to shop and experience retail and dedicated service on another level, something we haven’t had the opportunity to be engaged in before now. It is a very exciting time to be shopping in Brisbane.”

A line-up of local, creative collaborations will coincide with the stores’ opening day celebrations:

  • In partnership with Brisbane designer and letterer Jasmine Dowling, West Elm is offering its first 300 customers an exclusive limited-edition tote bag (minimum spend $50, while stocks last).
  • Pottery Barn customers are invited to enjoy a coffee and decadent bespoke cookie created by local baker The Sugar Hit while they explore the store. There will also be kid-friendly cookies and babycinos on offer for the little ones.
  • Pottery Barn Kids is hosting a fun crafting event for young customers making paper rosettes and mini badges, led by Brisbane stylist Kara Hynes (AKA Lulu Lucky).

The Brisbane stores are in Wandoo Street, Fortitude Valley.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. currently operates stores for Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids & West Elm in Bondi Junction and Chatswood (NSW), Chadstone (VIC), and Perth (WA). The Bondi Junction, Chatswood and Chadstone locations are also home to Williams-Sonoma stores, including a dedicated Williams-Sonoma Cooking School in Bondi Junction. There is also a standalone West Elm store in South Yarra (VIC), plus a multi-brand outlet in Fyshwick (ACT). All brands ship across Australia via their online stores.

Looking for a little laptop table for your study nook rather than a full-size desk? We think IKEA’s great value, compact, solid timber NORRASEN ($119) is the ideal option.

WE AU Mid-Century Acorn Desk

Jen has this large desk in her home office and everyone asks where it’s from. I can tell you it’s the Stationers Trestle Desk from Freedom ($449). What it lacks in drawers it more than makes up for in surface area! Even better, minimal assembly involved!

With a secret compartment ideal for tablet and laptop use, the timber Pod Lift Top Desk from Domayne is characterised by clean yet innovative design. Crafted from Australian mixed hardwood, giving it a rich and warm look, the price is available upon request.

West Elm’s guide to nailing the eclectic look

By Bianca Tzatzagos

Real homes don’t look like furniture catalogues – and nor should they! Along with great design and a few carefully chosen furniture pieces, all the best homes are full of the stuff of life: holiday souvenirs, inherited furniture, gifts from grandparents, family photos and quirky collections.

embroidered-inca-pillow-cover-t1866_3z-1

Instead of shying away from all that good stuff, west elm’s new modernism embraces the everyday. This is style with soul. And here are a few ideas on how to make the look work in your home:

1. The new modernism is multi-layered. Imperfect, handcrafted objects humanise the clean, liveable lines of mid-century style. This means you’ve got licence to layer your streamlined sofa with a brightly hand-embroidered cushion, or bring character to your console with a hand-hewn glazed terracotta vase. Don’t be afraid to mix different styles, eras and global influences – your home is one-of-a-kind, after all.

gilded-serving-platter-e1102_3z[5]

2. Discard the unessential. Build your home on a foundation of simplicity, small pleasures and pieces made to matter. If it doesn’t hold essential use, sentimental charm or inherent beauty, then reconsider owning it at all.

3. Have a place for everything. New multi-purpose storage furniture packs style and function into small (or sprawling) spaces. Keep it from looking cluttered by choosing furniture with a mix of open shelving and display surfaces, plus cupboards and drawers for stashing the unsightly. If everything you own has a dedicated place, then displays feel deliberate rather than disordered. And when even the most ordinary objects get their own pedestal, it instantly elevates them to something special.

terrace_console_z_hero

4. Learn the art of display. There are no hard and fast rules, so be sure to experiment until it feels right to you. But here are a few secrets from the west elm home stylists:

  • Group objects by colour tone, such as arranging cool blue glass and white marble against clean white furniture, or pairing all warm and earthy tones with rustic wood shelving.
  • Let things breathe. A little negative space in a display goes a long way! Consider grouping some small objects close together and then offsetting the display with complementary larger objects positioned slightly further away.
  • Use shelving and display furniture in conjunction with the adjacent wall space. Walls are a great way to display collections, especially when you’re short on surface space. Consider hanging favourite dishes or trays using plate hangers from the hardware store, or even adding some picture ledges or wall brackets to house a few favourite things.

Our 10 best beds and bedheads

There’s no doubt about it: a great bed will not only give you a great night’s sleep but also (and we’re all about the looks) look fantastic too. Pick well and invest wisely we say, and buy something which will last you several years. Here are 10 of mine and Jen’s faves and they’re a varied bunch!

The rose gold Eden bed by Incy Interiors ($999 for queen size) is both classical and timeless. Expertly crafted from sturdy and strong metal we absolutely LOVE it. You will have seen this one in countless magazines!

eden_365__59594.1434506559.1280.1280

Another one from Incy Interiors (because we just can’t go past it), the clean simple lines of this new take on the Four-Poster bed (a design collaboration with stylist Megan Morton, from $1,299 for queen size) really make for something unique. Now you just have to pick your colour (custom available)!

Incy_beds_250714_14__30330.1408586297.1280.1280

I’ve seen the Bailey Bed from Green Cathedral in person, so I can attest it’s an absolute stunner! Constructed from American oak (in either natural oak, ebony or whitewash finish) and beautiful Shibori-dyed leather hides (available in a range of patterns or most Pantone colours), you really have the utmost flexibility when it comes to the design. Available in limited release, prices start fro, $3,099 for a queen. It’s not cheap but it’s not just any old mass-produced bed either.

GC-5

Upholstered in a feather grey fabric, the Mod Upholstered Bed ($999 for queen size) from West Elm features a slim silhouette, angled solid wood legs and welted details along the corners.

WE AU Mod Bed

Of course, you can add a bedhead to your existing bed to make it a showstopper and while upholstered bedheads are now nothing new, we think the options at Heatherly Designs are stunning. Our latest favourite is the Lincoln, with the option of horizontal or vertical lines and your choice of fabric. Price dependent on size and fabric. They also sell upholstered bed bases.

Lincoln-1264x824

Another great bedhead option is the Maddison from BedNest. Glamorous, strong and more than a little bit sassy, the angled, tapered side wings are studded in either antique brass or silver. Stunning in plain velvet or a geometric pattern, there are a magnitude of fabric and size options available (price dependent on choice).

Maddison

While we’re talking bedheads, Mexsii’s are works of art and not for the faint hearted. The Nomadic Heart is my favourite. How cool is it?! Price on application. Custom options available.

140706---MEXSII-480

Upholstered isn’t for everyone and some people love good old fashioned timber. Perhaps not surprisingly, you can find the traditional style Ashby Sleigh Bed at Pottery Barn, in rustic pine or rustic mahogany. From $1,974 for queen size.pb-ashby-bed_rusticpineThe Asta Bed by Blockheads Alisa and Lysandra beautifully combines the rawness of timber and the softness of fabric to create a contemporary and sophisticated look and feel. Available from Forty Winks in four colourways, the queen size retails for $2,199.

asta

Australian online-only business Sonno, have a small but great value range of simple upholstered beds. Queen size from $499.

Interiors Addict’s 10 best bedsides

From retro and industrial to quirky and pretty, we have a bedside table for every style and every budget!

This Mid-Century Bedside Table ($399) from West Elm borrows its slim legs, angled face and understated retro details from iconic ’50s and ’60s furniture silhouettes. With antique bronze finish knobs for an unexpectedly luxe twist, it is made from FSC-certified wood and is available in three colourways.

I love, love, love the Componibili 3 Round bedside (front left in the image below) and you’ve probably seen it everywhere, with many stores having replicas! However, the original is still surprisingly affordable at $220. Coming in many colours and configurations, the 30-year-old design from Kartell is flexible, functional and practical.

Designed by two of our favourite Blockheads, twins Alisa and Lysandra, the Asta Bedside Table for Forty Winks is Australian made but Scandinavian inspired. Part of a four-piece bedroom suite, but available individually for $749, it combines the rawness of timber with eye-catching rose gold detailing.

Magazine rack-slash-bedside table, the unique Three Legged Magazine Stand features carefully shaped steel plates to create an angle to place magazines, while leaving a flat top surface with enough space for a drink. Available from Urban Couture and coming in both black and white, it retails for $349.

I’m not normally one for bedside tables that don’t have any drawers (I can’t be the only one who accumulates mess that needs to be hidden?!), but if space is at a premium, these Kerr Stools ($289) in rose pink and black are a gorgeous option. Available from Barnaby Lane, they are made from iron and timber.

The MUSKEN Bedside Table from IKEA is a total bargain, costing just $59. Sturdy, practical and working with most interiors, you can also purchase the matching wardrobe and drawers for the full look.

The Swing Table ($279.95) by 6ixty is one-of-a-kind cool, with both colour accents (ash with grey, white, red or yellow) and natural wood tones. Practical too, it features an angled handle for easy moving and two storage drawers. It is available from Zanui.

Made in Melbourne from Tasmanian Oak veneer and a powdercoated tube steel frame (in cloudy blue or soft white), the Oliver Side Table ($499) is minimal and versatile. Available from Hunting for George, there’s also a corresponding bed and bench if you want the whole set.

This shimmery number is sure to make a statement, in either a gorgeous coppery bronze or luxe clear and smoke colour tints. Fitted with three drawers and featuring a classic square front, the Optical Bedside Table from Domayne is a real show stopper. Price available in store or upon request.

Small spaces need great storage and the Rigby Sidetable ($400) from Milkcart delivers in spades. With a narrow footprint, but deep storage, it fits your iPad, magazines and remote with room to spare. Available in matte or gloss white laminate and sustainable timber with a Tassie Oak trim, you can also choose from a silver button, black knob, handmade leather pull or timber handle.

10 interior designers’ favourite Sydney homewares stores

Last week we spoke to 10 of Melbourne’s top interior designers and had them recommend their favourite Melbourne homewares stores. Today it’s Sydney’s turn!

Ioanna Lennox of Ioanna Lennox Interiors: West Elm is my go-to place if I need something to add to an already defined style or existing room or, equally, if I need to pick out some feature items as a starting point for a space. West Elm has everything from contemporary and modern American furniture, rugs, pre-made curtains and soft furnishings to beautiful accents and kitchenware that would enhance any space. The West Elm style is warm, textured and relaxed and fits so well into our contemporary Australian design aesthetic.

Jeremy Bull of Alexander &CO: The creation of cultural brain trust Nicholas Barber (also one of the more lovely human beings you are likely to meet) Dunlin is a beautiful curation of nostalgia and craft. We haven’t found a project yet where there isn’t a great place for a handmade wicker basket, suspended glass terrarium or mast light fitting, and there is never a reason not to have him visit our studio.

Meryl Hare of Hare + Klein: My favourite homewares store is Spence & Lyda. They vary their merchandise and often have one-offs, so they keep us interested! They also have a range of Ruth Levine’s beautiful vessels and totems, a personal favourite.

Christopher Polly of Christopher Polly Architect: Top3 By Design is a favourite, as I’ve found myself consistently revisiting their store due to their broad range of products. They offer good design, ranging from simple to eclectic pieces and they regularly refresh with new products. They have a great mix of lighting, homewares and accessories for utilitarian or decorative purposes.

Virginia Kerridge of Virginia Kerridge Architect: My favourite homewares store is Chee Soon & Fitzgerald, and it’s also my local as they are on Regent St, Redfern. It’s a small store but they have lots of quality things, and the fact that it is small means you aren’t overwhelmed by choice as is so often the case! They have a great mixture of products from ceramics and textiles to lighting and gifts. Also you have the added bonus of having a laugh with them every time you visit!

Brendan Wong of Brendan Wong Design: Now in their 30th year, Dinosaur Designs are known for their signature resin pieces. The forms are so fascinating and when placed near a window they illuminate beautifully. They are now working with other diverse materials including brass, silver and agate. They have taken their pieces around the world but their original Paddington store is still at the heart. You’ll find bright resin vases or subdued ceramic bowls, something for every interior.

Brad Swartz of Brad Swartz Architect: One of my favourite homewares stores is Catapult Design in Darlinghurst. They have a beautiful collection of furniture from both established and up and coming Australian designers. The finely crafted and minimalistic design of many of their pieces means their furniture can either be a signature piece or sit back and let the architecture, view or artwork take centre stage.

Sarah-Jane Pyke of Arent&PykeSmall Spaces in Redfern is such a rare gem, unlike any other retail experience in Sydney. It is such a beautiful space, part art gallery and part homewares store, with a selection of furniture pieces to suit small homes. A visit to Small Spaces is always inspiring. In this era of mass production, everything in the store feels like a rare treasure, with a strong sense of its maker. As much as the store changes, it maintains its peaceful, light filled calm. You feel like you could move in and spend the rest of your days drinking tea.

Anoushka Allum of SmartSpace Interiors: I’m always shopping at Papaya in Mosman. I find that the tranquil style and paired back colours that they stock work with almost any interior. I’m a big fan of their pendant lighting, vessels, vases and candle holders. The designs are beautiful and use lots of natural materials. If you’re looking to dress your dining table this is also where I would recommend you go. Placemats, cutlery and crockery all in beautiful natural colours and designs make for a stunning table when entertaining.

Chloe Matters of TomMarkHenryMCM House is my favourite as it typifies some of my most admired elements: neutral and relaxed tones and textures that work in simple harmony. They also mix these simple pieces with wares that have a slight modern, oriental twist. This understated look is powerful and represents a tranquility that I appreciate in design.
