Covet my coffee table: with stylist Mr Jason Grant

“We have a few little coffee tables we use together as a little collection. You will find books (Monocle) and magazines (a mix of interior and fashion) a Palm Beach/Blacklist Daisy candle, crystals, Sophia our Boston terrier’s new lead from Best in Park, a gold dish from Crate and Barrel and a copy of my book manuscript.”

Super soft linen with a splash of colour from Major Minor

There’s some great quality linen out there in Australia, and for those who love the perfectly crumpled look and feel but prefer theirs with a shot of bright colour, mother-daughter team Major Minor could be just the ticket.

MAJORMINOR red

I spoke to Hannah Seely, one half of the new, online linen business, with her mum, Anne. They launched earlier this year after struggling to find linen bedding that was contemporary and modern at an affordable price.

We knew we wanted to work together on a project that would allow us to travel, be creative and have a good laugh in the process,” says Hannah. “The ball started rolling a couple of years ago after a trip to India. We’d already decided to offer classic linen colours such as white and grey but also wanted to add some vibrant pops of colour to our range and thought there was no better place than India to locate and source beautiful bright linen!”

First look inside West Elm Melbourne: opening today!

West Elm Melbourne officially opens on Chapel Street this morning and last night they threw a celebration party. I couldn’t make it but I sent along Kathryn Bamford, who took a few snaps for us.

The who’s who of the design zoo were out in numbers last night at the West Elm South Yarra opening party. Melbourne certainly pulled out its finest weather (not) and decided a last minute downpour of rain would add to the excitement of the new store on Chapel Street.

When you first walk in, there is the most stunning green wall by GSky Plant Systems. Stylist Mr Jason Grant said the store looked great and was definitely bigger than the Bondi one.

Who better than the lovely store manager Dimitri, to give me the low down on the new store and all things West Elm? Funnily enough, he used to manage one of my other favourite Melbourne stores, Meizai. He was excited to see the store buzzing with the 350+ people and explained that the turnaround for furniture items purchased is 5 days (which in my opinion is much better than the usual 6-8 weeks most stores quote you).

Mr Jason Grant’s book, A Place Called Home

Tomorrow I’m off to the Sydney launch of stylist Jason Grant’s first book, A Place Called Home, so it’s about time I reviewed it for you!

Mr Jason Grant A Place Called Home cover

If you know MJG, or follow him on social media, you’ll know this is a project that has taken over his life for a good year. Luckily he is DELIGHTED with how it turned out and I can see why. It feels like if Jason was a book, this would be it.

It’s light on words and heavy on beautiful images by photographer James Geer. And let’s face it, who has time to actually read their coffee table books anyway?! I actually devoured this book in one enjoyable afternoon, but it’s the sort of book you’ll want to dip back in and out of on rainy afternoons, especially as its many photos of the beach and Bondi will bring back memories of summer.

Mr Jason Grant A Place Called Home 3

Jason is a well known freelance interior stylist and was previously style director of Real Living, who he still works for, alongside almost every other Australian homes magazine. He was also one of the very first people I interviewed for Interiors Addict! Jason has his own paint ranges for Murobond and recently styled Freedom’s new winter collection for its catalogue and advertising.

Cool Edie’s team up with Murobond on glam and fun paint range

The ladies at Cool Edie’s are the latest stylists to team up with Murobond on their own paint range, and very cool it is too.

Jane Frosh and Lucy Weight have come up with four colours: a matt black (of course), a gold, an almost-emerald green (how on-trend) and a peach.

“We wanted a set of colours that really represented the Australian interiors industry as it stands and our Cool Edie’s approach to styling. A matt black (Cool Edie’s Religion), because it directly reflects on Cool Edie’s, our religion if you will. Who doesn’t love a matt black? It neutralises all other colours and adds a tough, chic element to any interior.

“The gold, well, does that need explaining?! Gold is a sense of humour, a touch of glam, a pop of insanity, hence the name Confetti Bomb. Boom! It just reeks of fun and parties and frocks and laughter.

4 great interiors things coming in 2013

1. American heavyweights Pottery Barn, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma are all hitting Australian shores for the first time ever and opening in Bondi, date to be confirmed.

2. The Block All Stars starts in the New Year featuring four favourite double acts from previous series. I’ve already had a look around the houses in Bondi and I can’t wait to see how they all turn out. In my opinion, they can’t fail to sell for a small fortune!

A peek inside the world of interior decorator and long-time collector Lynda Gardener

Interior decorator and shop owner Lynda Gardener is a hoarder in the best possible sense. Scouring every corner of country Victoria for industrial treasures, she collects them to use in her homes and decorating projects and, if we’re lucky, to sell in her wonderful store Empire Vintage, in Melbourne’s Albert Park.

Lynda Gardener at her stunning home

She admits though, that her longstanding storage unit is packed to the rafters and getting out of control and, following the most recent renovation of the shop, she’ll be bringing more out to sell to lucky customers after Christmas. “I still have finds in there from 20 years ago,” says Lynda. “I have collected for a very long time and over the years have put much of it aside. Next year I am going to start going through my storage unit and bringing those items forward to be showcased at Empire. It’s about time I started to sell them rather than collect and keep everything, so there will be some wonderful items sifting through the store over the coming year or years (I do have a lot of stock)!”

She has owned Empire Vintage for 18 years. The recent renovation saw it go from two floors to one with the staircase removed to give more space. “I decided to use the wasted space above and beyond eye level and asked my favourite builder to build me pigeon holes that would take up two of the walls.” Adding to her desire for an old corner shop feel, there is a ladder to climb up to the highest shelves that can be wheeled around and makes a great feature. The previously pure white walls were painted in moody colours from stylist (and Lynda’s friend) Mr Jason Grant’s range for Murobond, to create a more dramatic look, and custom lighting added.

The launch of The Home, Cleo photoshoot and a trip to Project 82

Wow, yesterday was a big one and I have the blisters to prove it. In the morning I visited Project 82 in Surry Hills, which is about to turn two! More on this later in the week but I thoroughly recommend a visit. They’re in Fitzroy Street (number 82, would you believe it?!). Then at lunchtime I was off to ACP in Park Street for a photoshoot for Cleo magazine. My story about how I took blogging full-time will be in the January issue (out in December). I had my hair and makeup done and it was lots of fun. Everyone was lovely and it wasn’t half as painful as I thought it would be. After all, I HATE having my photo taken! Then in the evening I stopped by the launch party for The Home (which used to be called Dalani) where it was great to catch up with Mr Jason Grant and hear all about his book, which is almost finished and out next year. THEN I met my girlfriends for dinner. PHEW. Today I’m just meeting my accountant…

Jason’s Grant’s gone fishing with Murobond

Allegedly, it will be 24 degrees in Sydney this afternoon and stylist Jason Grant’s latest colour collection for Murobond, out on Thursday, has me feeling very Spring like. It’s called Gone Fishing and it’s really rather lovely.

His fourth collection for the paint company conjures up notions of summer escapes and getting away from the city and relaxing over the summer months, never far from the shore line. “It’s inspired by nature and the nautical, combining soft earthy neutrals, seas greens and ocean blues with a few pops of punchy reds and pinks, all in my signature style,” he says. “This collection is all about dreamy coastal adventures.”

Sunday Snippets: The best of the week in interiors

  •  I am a big fan of stylist Jane Frosh and this week I featured her Blue Mountains home, which is up for sale. It was recently on the cover of Country Style and it is AMAZING. Check it out.

It’s been a fantastic week for PR, with a double-pager in Ivy & Piper magazine and a feature in The West Australian’s Habitat section. I’m always really grateful for and excited by press coverage. I love getting the Interiors Addict message out far and wide so I was particularly please to be in a WA newspaper.

This coming week my apartment is being photographed for Northside magazine’s ‘At home with’ feature. I’m a little nervous, I must admit!

I’m looking forward to speaking at decoration + design in Melbourne on Friday. I’ll be there on Thursday too. If you’re exhibiting or coming to my talk with Darren Palmer, please let me know and I’ll try and make time to say hi! I’m making a weekend of it and can’t wait to stay at The Blackman, one of the art series hotels. The interiors look stunning and I can’t wait to check it out.

In totally unrelated news, this week I took the diamond my fiancé proposed with to the jeweller to be made into my engagement ring. VERY exciting and still floating on a post-engagement cloud…

I’m off to watch Downton Abbey. Have a fantastic week ahead and I hope to meet lots of you at decoration + design!

Mr Jason Grant on making your home FEEL good

I went to Mr Jason Grant’s design session at Coco Republic Design School last week and it was great. I’m lucky I get to hang out with MJG at industry events all the time but it isn’t really appropriate to pick someone’s brains about their job every time you see them so this way I got to sit back and make notes while everyone else asked the questions. Smart, huh?

For those who don’t know, Jason is a super famous magazine stylist who used to be style director at Real Living. His work can be found in all the major homes magazines, he has his own paint ranges for Murobond and, even more excitingly, he now has a book deal. Can’t wait for that one to come out.

Sunday Snippets: The best of the week in interiors

First, I must apologise for the lack of Sunday Snippets last week. As most of you will have heard by now, I had a crazy weekend: got engaged on Saturday and had my birthday on Sunday! Can’t complain!

Back to this week, here’s what been happening in my world and interiors…

  • I shared a new online find, I Love Linen, where you can pick up everything you need to recreate that hotel bed at home, but at a massive discount.
  • Hot on the heels of Real Living magazine, Country Style launches its own bed linen collection with Domayne this week.
  • The new belle magazine hit the news stands and I was delighted to find two photos of little ole me in there! Did you spot me?
  • I LOVE candles and I told you about a new Melbourne brand called Voyager that have a really clever ‘floating’ design.
  • Bay & Fyfe is one of Sydney’s hottest new lifestyle brands, currently producing some stunning scarves featuring art by Sneaky Sound System’s Daimon Downey. Founder Frith Hucks gave us an exclusive look inside her Sydney home, where many of the scarves decorate her walls as pieces of art.

A pretty big week all round! I hope you all have a fantastic new week ahead! Jen x

Sunday Snippets: the best of the week in interiors

  • I shared this competition from the Life InStyle trade fair which I’m judging alongside Mr Jason Grant and Lucy Feagins of The Design Files blog. Have you entered yet?
  • I enjoyed interviewing Melbourne interior designer David Hicks, who just opened an LA office and had some great stuff to share about design.
  • I launched my competition with Wicked Wix to win a year’s worth of candles and the good news is, you still have until noon on Friday to enter. What are you waiting for?!
  • Ex Real Living style director Mr Jason Grant offered Interiors Addict readers an EXCLUSIVE opportunity to join him for a VIP shopping tour around Sydney, visiting his favourite stores with him and learning stylist secrets. There’s still time to book your place for next week.
  • I featured a cool new product that lets you hang plants upside inside. No, I don’t really understand how it works either, but it’s pretty clever!
  • A stunning Art Deco inspired bar opened in Melbourne’s Brunswick on Friday night and I shared some snaps with you beforehand.
  • I reviewed this lovely book New Vintage by stylist Tahn Scoon.
  • I spent Saturday morning at a session with super stylist Megan Morton about putting the love in your home. It was awesome. Read all about it. Her home is in the current issue of Vogue Living. Well worth a look.

This coming week I’m looking forward to attending the Writing about Interiors, Style and Design evening class at Sydney Writers’ Centre. I know I shouldn’t really need it, right? But I think you can always learn something new and it’s great to hear other people’s perspective on things.

What are you doing this coming week? Jen x
