Imagine staying the night in a cardboard hotel!

When Georgia Hopkins stumbled upon Melbourne’s PerArchitects‘ cardboard houses, she knew she had found something unique. Used as short-term disaster relief housing, they were recyclable, temporary, cheap to make, weatherproof and adaptable, and Georgia believed their use could go far beyond their original intention. So in March 2013, after quitting her job at an investment bank, she founded House of Card.

The House of Card pop-up houses are now partnering with brands to showcase the brand as well as promote Australian design, aesthetics and sustainability. With the houses made from a paper-based graphic display board known as Falconboard,  and plywood and shipping pallets, all materials are completely recyclable, and the houses can be used over and over again.

Since launching, Georgia has run pops-ups in both Australia and the US (where she is currently based). Her first was at the massive SXSW music, film and interactive festival in Austin, Texas. Partnering with Australian company Longshot Coffee, they became the Pop Up Down Under Coffee House. Since then, she’s done the SXSW for a second time, as well as a bakehouse in LA’s Santa Barbara and a toast bar (apparently the Americans struggle with doing good toast!) at a street festival in Venice Beach, LA.

House of Card’s latest pop-up however has seen Georgia return home to Australia, creating a ‘cardboard hotel’ in Melbourne. “Being a bit of a gypsy and living out of a suitcase for the past two years with no fixed address, I have come to love and seek out all sorts of different accommodation,” she explains. “So given the houses were originally designed to be used as temporary and emergency accommodation, I thought it would be fun (and beautiful) to set up cardboard houses to offer exactly that: cosy, cardboard accommodation!”

Open for just the week, Georgia invited a group of local brands to be her first ever guests, with each being invited to add their own touches to their house with products. The guest list featured many of the up and comers in Australian fashion and design, including Kip & Co, Skin and Threads, POMS jewellery, Corn+Celeste, Fleur&Wood and State of Folly.

The cardboard hotel also featured a mini dinner party series (mini because the houses can only accommodate six-to-eight guests!) to raise funds for social business Food for Thought, a food program for local kids in the slums of Buenos Aires.

With the pop-up hotel done and dusted, Georgia is now ready for her next adventure and she’s thinking global domination. “We have some exciting plans for House of Card. We hope to see these beautiful little temporary structures popping up all over the world! The sky is the limit really. Pop-up film studios, mini band rooms and stages, another pop-up hotel perhaps, fashion collaborations, juice bars, coffee houses, coconut stands, mini craft breweries, wine bars… the options are endless.”

Possibly the best hand screenprinted, mix ‘n match pillowcase collection ever!

I Love Linen owner Lauren Roe has launched her own range of designs,  starting with the most fun and fabulous capsule collection of pillowcases.  They’re all limited edition and screenprinted by hand. Even the pom poms are hand dyed!

watermelon pink and green pillowcases

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The advantage of designing your own range is that you can take everything you personally love and bring it to life as products! And I’m sure Lauren will find that many other people love what she loves too. Pom poms, pineapples, chevron and ombre are definitely popular!

chevron navy pillow case

The idea to kick off The Bedroom Society with pillowcases (a full range will follow for Spring/Summer full) came because her store, I Love Linen, already stocks many good basic sheets and quilt covers in a variety of colours. “Pillowcases are a great way to change the look of your bedroom without spending a lot of money, and I have seen many of us like to have maybe something a bit more simple for the duvet (like pure linen) and then have a bit of fun with a pillowcase,” she says.

“It’s true I designed the range with a bit of a selfish perspective in that I am addicted to polkadots, chevron, stripes, pom poms and ombre and I wanted to do something fun, so added pineapples (I went for a more sophisticated design) and watermelons (I chose a more graphic print for this one). All the pieces are great in that you can mix and match them too.”

Because the range is still being screenprinted (you know we like to bring you these things hot off the press!) you can only place pre-orders now, with items due to ship on 27 April. The prices are good too, at less than $50 a pair. I wouldn’t hang around if I were you. Look out for a giveaway in our newsletter in the not too distant future.

Pre-order online for delivery after 27 April.

Exclusive first look at Kip & Co’s new kids bedding

As Kip & Co co-owner Kate Heppell puts it: “We’re not trying to be the sophisticated kids bedding company, or even the cute or the pretty, we just want to make a spunky fun kids bedding range.” And boy, do they nail that brief.

kip & co 3

Kate, along with her sister Hayley Pannekoecke and her best friend Alex van der Sluys, make up the Kip & Co team. Founded in 2012 they also design bold and beautiful adults bedding, but it’s their new kids range, that we got an exclusive first look at, that has really got our attention.

A particular favourite is the scribble print, “the kids version of the polka dot,” which was drawn by Hayley’s then four-year-old daughter, Chloe.

kip and co 1

“We had kind of tried a scribble print before but we had never thought to say to a child can you have a little play for us,” explains Kate. “So Chloe did all these scribbles for us and we just ended up doing this big repeat of them. We didn’t want it to be age specific, just fun and colourful.”

It is this type of collaboration that sees Kate favour designing for kids over adults, and having a child herself and Hayley having three, means there’s always a little person to bounce ideas off.

“We definitely do a lot of testing with our kids,” says Kate. “Showing them drawings and prints throughout the design process. Chloe in particular is definitely our inspiration, she is a great sounding board.”

kip and co 2

Other kids prints featured in the range include a reversible bedspread with a pizza print on one side and a psychedelic candystripe on the other, as well some deep coloured velvets with cotton backings.

And if you’re wishing you could turn back the clock so you too could enjoy the lovely bedding, no need, the kids prints are also available for adults!

The new designs launch today. To shop online and get a list of local stockists visit Kip & Co here.

Artworks become one of a kind bedheads thanks to Mexsii

It may be many months away, but I’ve already got my Christmas wish list sorted, and right at the top is a bedhead from Mexsii.

mexsii

Transforming statement artworks into padded artisan headboards, these unique pieces are not only stunning but a pretty genius idea.

For co-founder Merryn Paul the idea came from her working as a bedhead upholsterer, with the lack of design variation leaving her uninspired: “I was always searching for a bedhead idea to create for myself, but this constant turnaround of the same fabrics and design styles became so unremarkable to me. A longtime lover of vibrant art, I suddenly had a lightbulb moment: to combine my two loves of artwork and upholstery.”

mexii 3
Sarah (left) and Merryn

Enlisting the help of longtime friend Sarah Falzon, the two have never looked back, recently releasing their first collection, Wanderlust. Never ones to shy away from colour, the fluid use of paint in their designs is reflective of the Mexsii ethos, a belief that you should be free-spirited and live your life uninhibited, a feeling they want people to have in their personal spaces.

ICELANDIC DREAM_STANDALONE

“We want to allow people to turn their bedrooms into sanctuaries and ensure they truly love the space they live in,” explains Merryn. “We are not shy to use colour to allow people to connect with their space.”

With one of their biggest inspirations being nature (their look book was shot on a cactus farm!) it’s not surprising Mexsii strive to be environmentally sustainable.

mexii 2

“The overall design has been purposefully created to minimise offcuts and wastage,” says Merryn. “We have used sustainable raw materials, our fabric designs are printed onto 100% linen with non-toxic inks and we design, print and hand craft all bedheads in Melbourne.”

Mexsii Bedheads come in seven unique designs in both king and queen size. Shop online.

Cotton On Kids branch into homewares with first kids bed linen and room range

Cotton on Kids will launch one of its most exciting product categories yet on Monday — its first children’s bed linen and room range.

cotton_on_kids_space_0124_RGB_FA

The 100% cotton bed linen is available in a range of designs suitable for single, double and queen size beds, ensuring there is something for toddlers to teens, and even the big kids in the house who share the same passion for fun, bright, fashion-driven prints!

cotton_on_kids_space_0134_RGB_FA

The collection includes a range of stylish and fun sheet sets, reversible quilt covers and cushions, printed paper lanterns, removable chalkboards and other decorative accessories. All styles are designed to be mixed and matched, inviting kids and parents to explore their creative side and transform any bedroom into a space to dream, play, sleep, invent and, most importantly, have fun.

cotton_on_kids_space_0081_RGB_FA

The concept for the new range was born after Cotton On Kids design duo, Peta Baldacchino and Sarah Lawrence, discovered they shared a common frustration about the lack of affordable, fun and stylish homewares in the kids market. “The aim was to steer away from traditional girl and boy bedding options to ensure there was a combination of bright colours, fun patterns and most importantly, a collection that kids and parents will both love,” Sarah says.

cotton_on_kids_space_0037_RGB_FA

The pair were inspired by simple Scandinavian children’s designs, and then added the Cotton On Kids touch by adding a pop of colour here, there and everywhere.

The range launches online and in store on Monday 7 April 2014. Prices start at $19.95 for a single fitted sheet through to $69.95 for a queen doona cover.

Real rooms: A stylish nursery that both mum and child will love

Designing a nursery that’s stylish rather than babyish is no mean feat, but one that Shah Bahpyu has certainly managed.

Nursery1

Shah, whose daughter Helaina is seven months old, spent three months creating a contemporary space that was clean, fresh and uncluttered, but also contained some meaningful pieces.

With a soft pink and grey colour palette, her favourite features are the black and white photographs of Helaina’s grandparents, the Helaina in Wonderland art created by her godfather and the pink princess pedal car.

Helaina nursery pic2

And while it looks beautiful now, it wouldn’t be true home design if there hadn’t been some hurdles to begin with. “I was stuck for ages until I came across the wallpaper, then I knew exactly what to do,” explains Shah. “I find that I always struggle in the beginning to find a jumping off point, but once I find it the rest always falls into place relatively easily.”

nursery3

While Shah doesn’t currently work in interior design, the process has inspired the possibility of a career change. Now that she’s successfully designed her own, nurseries have become an area of interest, in particular designing a room that is pleasing to both mother and child.

“My husband and I always joked that babies didn’t understand anything and parents decorated nurseries for themselves, but once she came along, my feelings changed. I wanted her to have a great room, and yes I’ll admit I designed the room for me too!”

You can read more about Shah’s designing adventures on her blog Hammer and Heels.

Tips for a good night’s sleep + win an Ergoflex mattress

Sponsored by Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattresses.

There’s nothing like a peaceful, comfortable night’s sleep and a new bed or mattress can be pretty much life-changing! I asked a few experts for their top tips on getting a good night’s sleep and creating a relaxing bedroom sanctuary.

An Ergoflex mattress won't look out of place in the most stylish bedroom
An Ergoflex mattress won’t look out of place in the most stylish bedroom

Matthew White of Ergoflex, says: “Better sleep is about a holistic approach. It’s about improving your sleep environment, and about training yourself to be a better sleeper. First, create a bedroom you never want to leave. A room with a relaxed ambience, regularly washed sheets, darkness when the lights go out and, where possible, zero noise pollution.

“You spend around one-third of your life in your bed so invest in a mattress and pillows that will help you sleep comfortably and undisturbed through the night, such as the proven material memory foam. Exercise, eat healthily, and drink plenty of fluids — and do it to a routine. Learn to wind down before you go to sleep, keep your stresses outside your bedroom door, and retire your digital devices an hour earlier.”

Tracie Ellis is creative director of Melbourne linen brand Aura Home. She says: “A great mattress and good quality natural fibre sheets and bedding are worth every dollar. Create a relaxing sanctuary that allows you to slip into a peaceful slumber with a beautiful natural fibre quilt and pillows, and of course only natural fibres for your bed linen. Your bed linen is right next to your skin so always choose pure cotton and/or linen which will breathe and enable you to have a great night’s sleep, also wonderful in keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

“Choose bed linen in colours that you love so that you’ll feel relaxed when enter your bedroom. Extra luxuries such as big fluffy European pillows and layers of throws on the end of your bed are great for extra warmth and comfort.”

Aura linen
Aura linen

Sometimes, it’s altogether more simple too: “I love an open window for fresh air, a great book and my phone on silent,” Tracie adds.

Interior stylist Naomi Findlay of Silk Home Staging & Styling says: “A visually cluttered space can impact on your ability to focus and relax. Minimising the amount of clutter will give you the best chance to relax and rest. It is well known that colours can have a physiological effect on us; colours can help us focus, increase our heart rate or even have a soothing effect. It goes without saying that it is best to avoid colours that increase your heart rate and alertness when decorating your bedroom, such as fiery red, zesty orange and yellow. Consider a muted or softer palette.”

She adds: “To help you slip into sleep or a relaxing state quicker, choose softer lighting over harsh bright lights. Consider having overhead lighting on dimmers and use side lamps beside the bed. Your bedroom should be all about you and your partner (if applicable), so spend some time thinking about the places that you feel most relaxed and calm. Is this in a holiday home, hotel or somewhere else? Once you have worked this out, spend some time recreating elements of this place to help transport you there whenever you enter the room.”

Kip & Co linen
Kip & Co linen

Hayley Pannekoecke of Australian bed linen company Kip & Co, adds: “The first thing required for a great night’s sleep is a fluffy pillow and an amazing comfy mattress. Linen-wise, nothing beats beautiful soft cotton sheets and pillowcases.

“Having a hot shower before bed is great for getting you in a snoozy state of mind. It’s important to have good air flow in the bedroom and to be warm, but not too warm. Overheating is terrible for sleeping conditions. Lastly, try and eat dinner a couple of hours before bed so you’re not too full. If you follow these guidelines you’re bound to be drifting off in no time at all! Sweet dreams!”

Colour blocking kids rooms for dummies

By Maya Savanovich

Colour blocking is a new trend in home decor; making use of two or three harmonious colours that look great together, then repeating them throughout the decor theme.

very rosenberry
Source: Very Rosenberry

A kid’s room is perfect for trying colour blocking, giving it a stylish, colourful and playful look and feel. The dynamic result adds a fun element, with the added bonus of having your child happier about spending more time in there. If you’d like to try colour blocking in your child’s room, here are some ideas to get you started:

Be brave and bold with colours

A combination of blue, green and an unexpected orange can result in a striking look. The trick is to work with colours that are close to each other on the colour wheel for a balanced harmonious look, or those that are opposite to each other for a dramatic contrasting look.

Source: Diigo. Link: https://www.diigo.com/item/p/qqasasezbspsrqdbezbcpobbor
Source: Diigo

You don’t have to go overboard to achieve colour blocking

Paint the walls in a bold colour. Then create one accent wall (for example the wall behind the bed or the wall with the bookshelves and study table unit) by either painting the entire wall in a different colour, or choosing artwork to achieve the same result. Let the same colours be used for upholstery fabrics, curtains and bed linen to get the perfect colour blocking scheme.

The good thing about colour blocking is that you can choose as many colours as you want and still achieve a sense of balance by using accessories like pillows, cushions, rugs, toy storage units and books to unite the many shades together. If the feature walls are a bright, funky colour like violet or yellow, the storage units can be infused with splashes of contrasting colours that complement each other.

Source: Very Rosenberry
Source: Very Rosenberry

If you think that incorporating your child’s favourite colours into the decor is becoming too bright, try to throw in some neutrals to achieve a sense of balance. Neutral coloured furniture, accessories and decorative items can help tone it down.

Source: Very Rosenberry
Source: Very Rosenberry

If you are new to playing with colours and aren’t sure about painting the walls in a bright colour or picking colourful furniture, you can also achieve colour blocking with accessories. If the furniture and walls are a neutral colour, try a bright, fun patchwork rug that covers the floor in blocks of rich colours. Then choose accessories like pillows, cushions, toy storage units, books and graffiti artwork in matching colours to let the theme run throughout the room.

The simple things: monochrome striped quilt perfection

Sometimes it doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. This new wide stripe quilt design from Aura in black and creme is a fine example.

widestripequiltcovercremeblack

I think all the time I’ve spent with Greg Natale recently helping him write his upcoming book is wearing off on me, because I’m starting to love a defined and contrasting black and white base in interiors. Before, I would have probably gone for something a little more subtle. I love this!

Get the look: Last night’s Block guest bedroom reveals

How impressive were last night’s guest bedroom reveals on The Block?! I actually really liked all the rooms and wouldn’t have liked to have had to pick the winner. But Kyal and Kara were the chosen couple and I did think their room was fantastic.

kyal and kara 3 guest bedroom the block

After slamming their water feature last week, the judges couldn’t believe they were seeing the same couple’s styling this week. Neale Whitaker said it felt clean and modern, in keeping with the loft environment and that the colour palette was perfectly restrained. Darren Palmer said the pair were at their best this week and that all the little things were done beautifully and that he was proud of their styling progress following his masterclass as they’d taken on board all his tips.

I think my own favourite this week was Chantelle and Steve’s room. It was certainly a strong week for those fans! I loved their brave parquetry wall feature, as did the judges. Neale said it was incredible and Darren said the room had real style to it. Shaynna loved the storage and the way the Art Deco features had been brought up to date. Their only real negative was about the antlers, which Neale called clichéd. I have to agree. I’m a bit over antlers!

chantelle and steve 1

I love rooms which are more than just a white box when you remove the furniture, yet still clean looking enough to work with different kinds of furniture. On that front, I thought these couples, and Alisa and Lysandra with their exposed brick, really delivered.

Now onto my favourite twins, Alisa and Lysandra. I loved their room too, and the fact they experimented with colour this week. The girls had the most mixed judges’ comments of everyone. Neale really loved their new design direction and their light sconces, while Shaynna Blaze — who the girls say judge them the harshest — said the look was too ‘in your face’ and would alienate some buyers.

alisa lysandra guest bedroom the block 1

Darren loved the lighting and the look but pointed out the position of the artwork wasn’t practical for sitting up in bed. And what did you think of that artwork (Portrait of Amy Winehouse After Klimt by Sue Quinn)? I loved it.

Get Lisa & Lysandra’s look: pair of stick sconces by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $299, Bindi bright throw by Alisa & Lysandra Collections, $49.95.

Last but not least, Brad and Dale impressed the judges by being in touch with their feminine side this week, although Neale didn’t like the colour palette and found it too primary and clichéd. Shaynna loved the storage but said the colour was too dark and the hanging rail was impractically high. Darren said the look was soft and beautiful.

brand and dale 2

Get Brad and Dale’s look: Gatsby cushion in teal, $49.95 | Colourful Life artwork by Maurice Golotta, $300 | Splash floor cushion, $179 | Faux stag head in platinum, $149 | Aura yellow Chevron Grande linen.

Get the look from last night’s Block room reveals

Did you enjoy last night’s first room reveal? Alisa & Lysandra won and I think rightly so. Having finally met the girls at my event in Melbourne on Thursday, I may be a little biased, but I like their attitude, think they know their stuff and have great taste. So I’m putting it out there now: I’m on Team Twins (editorial assistant Olivia is a big fan too)!

If you’d like to get the look from any of the four rooms, I’ve rounded up some of the products available to buy online from The Block Shop. From Alisa and Lysandra’s (above), check out the Forty Winks Gap bed and the Urban Road deer canvas.

I absolutely LOVED the Zuster copper mirror (I NEED it!) in Kyal and Kara’s room (below) and the Christopher Pennings artwork from Otomys Arthouse. This was my second favourite room. Loved the soft colour palette.

Making my bedroom a sanctuary and why you should too

I’m a really busy girl, as you can probably guess if you follow my antics on this blog. But I also preach the importance of taking time out (and sometimes you have to really work at making this happen) to relax, switch off from technology and just breathe.

jen bishop adairs perfect escape 2
My bed

My absolute favourite place to do this is the bath, but I don’t trust myself with my prized interiors coffee table books in there. Steam, clumsiness, you know… So when I need a little time out I like to retreat to my bedroom with a nice cup of tea, a stack of books and homes mags and lose myself in them for an hour or so. It makes such a difference!
