Sydney stylist Andrea Millar launches luxe lifestyle concept store

Bringing over 17 years of interiors and fashion experience, stylist and journalist Andrea Millar is today launching Australia’s newest concept store, Casa Boheme.

IMGP5185

The online store will also be accompanied by a bricks-and-mortar counterpart, which opens in the Sydney suburb of Balmain on Saturday 26 April. Stocking a range of locally and internationally sourced homewares, fashion, gifts and accessories, as well as vintage and new furniture, Casa Boheme aims to be the shopping destination for the modern bohemian woman.

“I just felt it was time to bring my experience of gathering, hunting and creating together in one place,” explains Andrea. “I’ve searched to find things I really adore, bringing the ethical and beautiful together.”

 CasaBoheme-Luandress-2

Casa Boheme (which translates in Spanish and French to Bohemian House) will in true concept store style, feature a diverse range of lines that all have a bohemian chic thread in common.

“I saw an opportunity to offer Australians a taste of the concept store model that is so prevalent in other major cities, but is rather scarce in Sydney,” says Andrea. “The strength of the concept store model is that it offers a highly curated range of products that celebrate a lifestyle and is a break from the formula that drives so much of retail.”

Gabrijela Iva Polic: the new face of the Sydney art world

Gabrijela Iva Polic is one to watch. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts last year, she’s already been invited to take part in her first exhibition, after giving up her former life as a customs officer.

Forever hope forever joy

Entitled Sydney Who and held at The Hughes Gallery in Surry Hills, the exhibition will showcase up and coming artists of Sydney. Gabrijela is ecstatic to be involved: “From someone who just graduated from art school five minutes ago with no exhibition history, to work with an established gallery that has been standing since 1969, I was and am, seriously chuffed and honoured.”

This beautiful part of you becomes this beautiful part of me

Though it’s no surprise Gabrijela is getting recognition, her work very unique and distinct, it is rich in vivid colour and intricate patterns. Inspired by the shape of organisms that live off and grow from one another, her abstract shapes seem almost lifelike.

I have been made by the Philia machine WEB

Love is a common theme for Gabrijela and her central inspiration: “I’m so inspired by love and everything that comes with it: the passions, the longing, the sadness, the bursts of joy. All of it and more.” Philosophy and the workings of the natural world are also heavy influences.

Yet it is not just the subject matter which is unique, Gabrijela’s use of materials is also worth noting. “The canvas works are predominately paintings, however if you get up close and personal you will notice quite a lot detailed of penwork,” she says. “The works on paper are quite often mixed media and on my new works I have been stitching into them with these beautiful metallic threads.”

They are covered in diamonds which only I see WEB

Being an artist wasn’t always on the cards. For seven years, she worked as a customs officer, later juggling study and work and then finally taking the plunge and changing careers.

“Eventually I decided that the only way I was going to get good enough to make painting a full-time thing that actually worked was to hang up my customs boots and paint every day,” she explains. “I followed my heart and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Find out more about Gabrijela and her work here or buy slected works from Penny Farthing Design House online. Sydney Who is at the Hughes Gallery in Surry Hills in May and June.

How to choose a painter and decorator

By Tony Isgrove

You’ve been through the process of designing your dream scheme, so now what? How do you engage a professional and reliable tradesman to bring your vision to life? Engaging a true painting and decorating professional can represent a bit of a minefield.

Your first step is choosing who to invite in to your home to quote. There are two ways I recommend to narrow this down:

Meet successful boutique Aussie brands at Design Life Sydney

Sponsored by Home & Giving

Unique, diverse and exciting, Australian design has much to offer. We are blessed to live in a country that provides great weather all year round (well almost!). This means that cheerful alfresco dining is often popular in warmer months, and during the cooler seasons we can hibernate indoors with industrial furniture and storage pieces incorporating natural minerals and warm earthy tones.

Dan300_6376_resized

In addition to this, trendy timber touches to furniture with colourful and soft textile detailing have become common in many Australian households. You can expect a blast of ocean colours. Sea palettes used on walls and a greater emphasis on the vast outdoors are ever-present. We are now closer than ever to having articulated an authentic Australian design identity!

Design without the compromise!

We all know that gift and homewares products reflect current and up-and-coming trends in the Australian market. Wholesalers are constantly being challenged with having to balance creativity with the demands of cost-effective and innovative production processes.

Dani Rosen, from Dan300 who will be exhibiting at Design Life, an event exclusive to the Home & Giving Fair, prides herself on the high quality of her textile and fabric products, due largely to local manufacturing allowing more control over design and production.

New Billy Heckenberg cushions get my vote

Sydney cushion brand Billy Heckenberg keep coming up with the goods and I’m really glad creator Maddy Duggan has kept her signature exposed zip.

billy heckenberg cockatoo island

The photographic Cockatoo Island collection has to be my favourite. Maddy says: “I have always been fascinated by Cockatoo Island, such a beautiful historical place surrounded by the scenic waters of Sydney harbour. So with my obsession towards all things industrial, this was the perfect inspiration for the third collection.

The prints are photographs taken of the mixed variety of concretes, textures and eroded surfaces found all over the island. I also played around with the colours to enhance the natural tones and complex textures.”

Designers Expert Tips House Tours Kids Rooms The Block

At home with The Block judge Darren Palmer, and living with pets and kids

With a four year-old, two dogs and a cat, interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer knows a thing or two about keeping his home looking stylish and organised but still, of course, fun!

darren1

I was lucky enough to have a look around his new Paddington home recently. Although he has some ambitious renovation plans for the future, its character features mean it’s full of charm and warmth. Great bones!

darren3

Dogs Doris and Pepi and Charlotte the cat follow Darren around like Dr Dolittle and son Hugo’s lego can be seen peeking out from under the coffee table, but this is not a home full of plastic or mess and there’s definitely no doggy smell. So, I sat down with Darren and asked him how he does it and if the house is always so suspiciously tidy?

NOMI: a new concept in customisable Australian, timber, flatpack furniture. No tools required!

NOMI is an exciting new concept in Australian designed and made furniture. Designed by you online, made of timber, with customisable colours and other options, delivered to you (flatpacked) free and (possibly the best bit) no tools required for assembly. Too good to be true?!

nomi Time Table

Sydney locals Michael Grassi, Henry Gresson and Tomek Archer have collaborated to launch the new concept. By combining online technology, product design and efficient manufacturing processes, their aim is to provide affordable and accessible designer furniture that can be customised online. NOMI launched at the end of last month.

Award winning designer Tomek, of Tomahawk Studios, has created the range with simplicity at its core. Clean lines and unassuming proportions make NOMI suitable for the home or office. “The collection has been conceived as a range of basics, informed by a series of studies into fundamental furniture types,” says Tomek. “Constructed from solid timber, the adaptable series of chairs, tables and storage each have timeless and enduring qualities that are equally suited to blending in or standing out, depending on the customiser’s efforts.”

nomi Time Coffee Table

Co-founder Michael adds: “We wanted to offer something special and unique, something that hadn’t been seen in the furniture space before. Our vision was to provide affordable designer furniture and create a place where people could interact with our products in new and exciting ways.”

This short video explains how it works…

Expert Tips Renting

What to consider when furnishing and decorating a holiday rental

As we prepare for the unveiling of our Palm Beach apartment project at the end of the month, I asked Emma Blomfield of Nest Designs what special considerations need to be made when furnishing a holiday rental.

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 4.46.55 PM

Durability and being easy to clean are 2 of the top, and less pretty and creative priorities when embarking on your holiday rental. “You never know who will be renting the apartment and when you might have families with children there for summer holidays, you can’t be sure how it will withstand a visit from sticky fingers or what will happen during a game of hide and seek,” says Emma. “Materials that should be avoided are things like glass top tables that aren’t secured, veneers — they are soft, dent easily and don’t withstand heavy duty cleaning agents that the cleaning company might use – and high gloss MDF as it scratches easily and ages faster.”

When it comes to flooring, hardwearing is key. Tiles, sisal carpet and timber floors are best. “There are loads of wool carpet options too that are commercial grade and come in a huge range of colours to suit your decor.”

flooring apartment

Emma also had to think about easy and regular cleaning between guests. “I’ve chosen bench tops that have flecks of taupe and brown so any scratches or spills won’t be obvious. The sofa is scotch guarded to prevent spills staining and the rug is a jute material, making it easy to shake out to clean. Sisal carpet is good for disguising sandy footprints.”
